Can't say I'm the most thrilled with this place. My boys took me for my birthday. We ordered the Patron flight (wait! What happened to the patron bottles???) The margaritas with exception of the guava were sour tasting. Grilled items were tasty but the rest, the corn tortillas, guac, etc was rather bland. There was a little amount of cheese on my enchiladas del Mar and the green sauce was forgotten. Corn tortillas almost seemed stale and tacos were bland. I think there was a teaspoon of guac on the "salad". I asked our waitress for a drink recommendation and she was clueless, finally saying, I don't know the rainbow. When I requested 3 to go cups for our Waters and my other sons coke, she immediately said, you can't take the margaritas to go! Ummm, excuse me?? I asked to take my water! Once the bill was placed on our table the waitress forgot we even existed. Another hour we sat and enjoyed each other's company without a glance from her. Best Mexican restaurant on the south side! The chips are thick corn chips and the salsa is perfectly balanced and so thick it sticks to the chip! The flavors are all fresh and delicious! My food orders for carry out have always been spot on, delicious, and financially reasonable.

El Toro is our go to Mexican restaurant. It's in the building that previously held the Stacked Pickle restaurant. There margaritas are very good and unique. The put dry ice in the glass before they pour the drink that causes it to bubble and steam like a witches brew. And, they're delicious. The food and service are excellent. Our favorite is the seafood pineapple that is chocked full of seafood and large enough to split between two people. They celebrate birthdays with a band and fireworks. It's the most unique and fun celebration of any restaurants we've been to. read more

I had a hard time trying this place out due to personal loyalty to my local Mexican joint, shout out Red Cactus, but I am glad I did. Quesabirrias were very tasty, like the tacos and drinks, salsa. I also got the Tacos Don Ramon and it was spicy enough to burn for on both ends if you know what I mean. Happy to have something new in the area and had high hopes when I saw the higher than normal menu prices online. We love to dine out and definitely don't mind paying higher prices if the quality of the food and experience measure up. We walked in to blaring music that could've been turned down by at least 25%. Greeted by the host within just a couple of minutes and shown to our table. I really liked and decor in this place it definitely looks like it was designed by a couple of "bros"... Almost has kind of a man cave feel. I got really optimistic about the quality of the food once I saw that the entire wait staff was wearing black bow ties. I ordered a 24 ounce Mexican beer which cost about nine dollars. That's about 3 to 4 dollars more than most Mexican places in this area. My wife ordered the house margarita which came with a ice cube made of something resembling dry ice - it made the drink bubble like a boiling pot - pretty cool. Chips and salsa were great - salsa was fresh and peppery. Queso tasted more like canned cheese wiz than traditional queso. Tamale was lacking flavor and tasted a bit freezer burnt - only took a few bites. Chicken chorizo quesadilla was huge and the filling was very good, especially the chicken sausage and sautéed onions. If prices go down or food quality go up - we would be regulars here. Definitely some room for improvement but they are brand new and we will try again soon and let you know. read more

We had a delicious salad, Freda Khalo, filled with fresh greens , fruit and tamarind sauce. Also the spinach enchiladas were well spiced and yummy. If you have a celebration come here!!! Visited the downtown location and thought I would give them a try. It's 3 days after their grand opening and I must say it was rather busy. Our food came out really fast. I really wanted to like this place - it's close to home and as a die-hard taco fan, I was excited at the possibility of a solid Mexican restaurant near home. Unfortunately, if I had to describe this place in one word I'd say "BLAND"! We visited on my birthday, a Tuesday, and the place was fairly full. I ordered carnitas tacos with a side of refried beans and my husband got the carne asada. The carnitas were seriously under seasoned and the beans tasted like water! The asada, omg, one of the worst things I've EVER tested in a Mexican restaurant. If you grew up in the US, you probably have eaten one of those baked/steamed cheeseburgers in your school lunch - that's what the carne asada tasted like - REGRET & DISAPPOINTMENT. Pair well below average food with mediocre service and you've basically got El Toro. We didn't try any drinks so maybe that's their strong suit but the food was an immense let down. read more

I originally went to El Toro downtown after they moved into Acapulco Joes. I had been a long time Joe's fan. I really tried to compare them to Joes and that was unfair to El Toro. It has been several years, but they open an El Toro up the street. I fought it but gave in and tried it tonight. I'm so glad I did. The margarita was awesome. The second one was even better. I ordered the Quesa - Birrias. Do yourself a favor and order this. If you enjoy tender shredded beef, you'll love these. They were amazing coupled with the two sauces and fresh cilantro. The food was a unique Mexican food experience. We have so many of the everyday standard Mexican restaurants around town with the same menu and the same taste. El Toro separates themselves from the rest and stepped up their game and delivered. I'm so glad I gave them another chance. It won't be my last trip. read more

Hard to rate this place. The salsa is the best I've had anywhere. Service need a little improvement. We had the same guy all 3 times we went. I feel they charge to much and try to make it fancy. 2 of the times the food needed to be seared a little better and would have been fantastic. The other time it was perfect. We had heard good buzz from neighbors, and they were not wrong! Delicious food, friendly and efficient staff, and nice decor. We all had the vegetarian platter (even though we're not vegetarians), and it was a nice variation on the traditional Mexican combo of burrito, beans (black, in this case), and rice. We have eaten here twice in the last 3 weeks. We were seated promptly even when the place was crowded. They brought our chips and salsa right away. Our meals were great and it was plenty of food.
