Let's start with a "if you grew up in Baytown/Highlands there is no substitute for El Toro". Full stop. It is very Tex-mex with flavors that have not wavered much over the years. I make it a point to go every time I come back home. The chips are fresh and crispy, the creamy green sauce is over the top and the red sauce has. Nice subtle kick. The queso is just what you want when you just want, an old menu described it as "a fine blend of Kraft cheese" and they are right. :) The dinners are filling, the beans are good and we had plenty of leftovers which reheat great. The service today was lacking slightly, and not from it being bad, just slightly awkward (took about 5 trips to get all the pieces needed to box up our meal). Drinks were refilled, service was pleasant and food came out fast. Did I mention free ice cream? Sometimes vanilla, sometimes chocolate, always a nice treat. The bay way location is a little generic in the looks department, especially if you remember the murals from years and years ago (and I do mean years). That being said the lighting is warm, it's pretty clean and the seating is not cramped. Do yourself a favor, have some El Toro. You will be happy you did. read more

I really wanted to like this place. Luckily my daughter really enjoyed her meal. She got the kids quesadillas, which were strange because they had a chicken filling with onions, which is weird on a kids meal, instead of chunks of chicken and melted cheese. I got a combo plate, the Laredo dinner, so I could try a little bit of everything. The cheese enchilada was OK fajita nachos and rice and beans were average, put the chicken flauta.... My daughter loved it, but it was filled with either the same or similar chicken filling, instead of just shredded chicken. I'm used to shredded chicken with maybe a little bit of cheese inside, and rolled in a corn tortilla. This was a flour tortilla with a chicken mixture that was wet. Almost like it was made with cream cheese. Not a fan, although my daughter loved it. The chips were nice and crispy and bubbly, and the queso is good. So if I ever had to come here again (I have friends who live in the area), I could just get the queso and maybe another appetizer. Won't be back unless I have to lol read more

What a lovely restaurant overall. I had dinner there on a Thursday night, and the food and atmosphere were enjoyable. Unfortunately, our experience was impacted by our waiter's behavior toward the end of the visit. When we were preparing to leave and tip, his response came across as rude and unprofessional, which was disappointing. Tipping is optional and should be earned through good service. Because of that interaction, we chose not to leave a tip. I would consider returning, but only if the service experience improves. David do better next time. read more

Today, my bestie,Ernesto Rodriguez and I finally settled on El Toro for lunch after the classic "Where do you want to eat?" battle. Feeling responsible, I ordered a taco salad, you know, in a bowl because salad equals bowl, right? WRONG. In comes my taco salad, which apparently identifies as...a taco. First visit and will be returning! The place and the parking are large. We waited 30 minutes to be seated. Our waitress was attentive and the food came out quickly. The ambiance is busy, hearty, and boisterous with many large parties. They give complimentary chips and salsa, which tasted different than other Mexican places, they were better. We got the guac as an appetizer and weren't disappointed. Instead of chips it has little fried tortillas, which was unique. The mojito comes in a few flavors, I got the coconut, which was good although a little sweet for me taste, but still good. I got the pescado Santiago, which was very filling. It was a little salty but I'm more sensitive to that than most people but it was about par with other restaurants. I also got to try the carnitas fajitas, the pork was a good quality meat, not too fatty. They have a good menu with creative names and execution. Been eating here for over 2 decades and the food is always consistently delicious. My go to is usually the tacos Al Carbon, but I often deviate and to other dishes and always leave satisfied. This time I got the Pescado Santiago, and it was superb. Also love how light and crisp the complementary chips are. Everything went well!!! The chips are very good and had a pretty good crunch, not too soft but also not too crispy and nicely salted. I would recommend getting the queso for them because it adds a nice warm and cheesy flavor to them. Also I would recommend getting the Carne Guisada it was very tender and rich. Service was amazing and we had our food in under 5-7 minutes after ordering, it was still hot and the rice was very tasty. The waiters were very kind and helpful. They looked genuinely happy to cheer and sing happy birthday to people. Our waiter, Danny, was The. Best! Excellent service and so very nice!!! Stopped in for a late lunch at El Toro and it did not disappoint! We were seated rather quickly and our waitress brought over waters, chips and salsa. She was very patient since it was our first visit and I wanted to ensure I checked out the entire menu. We had the elote as an appetizer, which was top tier! My husband went for his standard chimichanga as his entree which he gave a 7 out of 10. I had the fajita lunch special which was a perfect size and super delicious so I'd definitely order it again. We also had some cocktails and the mangonada was very refreshing! They played awesome music that reminded us of being back home. I went in for lunch today and was told that there was a change in the Chunky Salsa Verde. I was given the new sauce and it was absolutely horrible, inedible. It tasted like straight up salty chicken bouillon. Why the change? I have been eating at El Toros for 30+years and this is very disappointing. This will make me reconsider going back. read more

Part onSo, we are new to the area and decided to visit El Toro because the outside looked truly spectacular, and we had heard that the food was good. We were a party of 5 adults and one child. When we arrived, there was a young lady at the front desk, but she wasn't the hostess. When the host came to the front, we were told that there were apparently a lot of graduation parties being seated at the restaurant and they wanted to make sure that the waitstaff were not overwhelmed with tables so we were informed that for our group we would have a 10-15-minute wait time. We were fine with that and patiently waited. In the meantime, my husband went to the bar and asked for a top shelf margarita and the margarita was not the best. This location makes their top shelf margarita with Jalisco tequila, and I wouldn't recommend their margaritas. Literally like sour lime water. Finally, within our 10-15-minute window we were seated. The tabletop for 6 was very tight and we were very close to the table behind us which was a party of about 8-10. We were introduced to our waitress Gianna, and we ordered two sweet teas, a lemonade, a kids lemonade and a blue rum. At this time, I also ordered the kids meal which was cheese pizza and fries option. When the drinks came out the sweet tea was not like freshly made sweet tea it was as if it was a reused tea bag to stretch the servings of tea and simply was light brown and had no taste. We sent them back and Gianna seemed offended that I said the tea was nasty. I asked for two lemonades to replace the sweet teas. In the meantime, the kids cheese pizza and fries came out and it was truly a "kids" pizza just plain white cheese no real flavor and the fries were not hot they were warm which is fine because you don't want to burn your kid. The lemonades finally came out and they were fine, but I was a little skeptical about drinking them because of the energy that I was getting from our waitress. It took four requests to get another serving of chips to the table because they gave our table of 6 one bowl of chips which is a small bowl. I asked my family if they were sure that they wanted to stay and they said might as well since we are here and already ordered drinks hoping that the food would be better than the service that we were already being provided. So reluctantly I ordered. I ordered the Fajita trio for one with the jalapeno sausage as an add on with charro beans, Spanish rice and flour torillas. The rest of our orders was the STEAK chimichanga, charro beans, Spanish rice/ chicken taco plate/steak fajita nachos/steak quesadillas. The fajita trio was actually tasty but did not come with the accompaniments that I asked about so don't look for sour cream or jalapenos with your fajitas when they come out. The chicken taco plate the meat was not anything I would recommend. The steak fajita nachos and the steak quesadillas had no flavor at ALL. The chimichanga meal came out with CHICKEN in it instead of STEAK and when we told the waitress Gianna about it she said "It wasn't me the kitchen made the mistake" instead of her letting my husband eat his beans and rice she took the entire plate when she could have take the chimichanga. Mind you we already waited over 30 minutes for our meal and in the meantime of waiting for that meal they had to sing happy birthday to one or two tables I can't recall that so we were HUNGRY. I don't mind waiting for my food when I'm going to get it hot. However the only thing that came out hot was the fajita plate. Nothing else that was served was hot. Since my husband was waiting for his food I offered him some of mine. We waited so long for his plate to come out I felt bad that his food was wrong since we were celebrating his birthday week and this was the first stop of the week. When Gianna brought his food out, his replacement STEAK CHIMICHANGA plate with charro beans and Spanish rice the meal was WRONG AGAIN. It had a ton of refried beans on the plate in the rice. When we explained to her that he doesn't eat refried beans she said that she would bring him out a cup of charro beans. He declined as his entire meal had been ruined.
