Clean and busy restaurant. Quick service, casual ambiance. I was really disappointed with the food. I ordered the tortilla soup and salad and the soup was bland. No flavor whatsoever, full of bell peppers and tomato as you can see in the picture. Ordered the queso dip which was the best part of the $63 plus tip meal and the southwestern egg rolls were mushy on the inside and not completely cooked as well. The flour tortillas were sickly looking and we had to ask them to take them back and cook them longer. Even for a Tex-Mex restaurant those weren't very good either. Definitely would not come back again and don't recommend them. Three stars for service, servers and queso dip, chips and red salsa only. read more

I would say this is more of a 3.5 review vs a 4 and that is honestly only due to the service. We normally go to the El Toro off Garth, but were closer to this one today for lunch so we decided to go! This El Toro is right next to Exxon, so if you plan on going for lunch, plan to wait ... not for a table, but for a waitress and food ... which is what we did. We waited about 10-15 minutes for a drink order and overall we're there for over an hour for a meal that should have taken 30 minutes. Overall, the food was excellent, as always! I got a taco salad and my husband got the special which was ribeye chicharron ... both were great! Point being is that El Toro's food is great! If you go to this location during lunch, know what you want before you get there and/or plan to wait! read more

It smelled so good outside that we decided to give it a try. The salsa was like Pace but more bland and also served with a watery green sauce. My taco tasted strange. I'm not sure what they seasoned the meat with but it tasted off. The tostada was good though! Couldn't finish the taco. My husband's fajita salad was good. Nothing outstanding but it was good. I was VERY disappointed in my experience here today. When I placed my order I was very specific that I wanted two cheese enchiladas and a SOFT taco with beef fajita meat instead of ground beef. I was willing to pay the up charge for the substitution. When my taco arrived it was crunchy (which I would have been ok with) but it was ground beef. I sent it back. When my enchiladas arrived they were beef fajita instead of cheese. Now I'm frustrated! I ate them anyway. The quality of the food was less than stellar and then I got my check. I expected maybe $2-$3 up charge for the meat sub... it was $5.95! I paid my bill, with tip. I will NEVER go back to this location or any EL Toro. read more

I went to this restaurant a few weeks ago and we had around a party of ten. Everything was going fine until we were getting ready to pay. A relative of mine asked if gratuity was included in the price and the waitress told us no. So we tipped but when we were looking at the paper receipt we noticed extra money was charged. We told the waitress about it and she claimed that she didn't know her manager added a gratuity. They "said" they would fix it and gave a new receipts with the correct totals but the money wasn't given back. Make sure you double check your ticket before you pay. read more

Really good authentic Mexican food. We got invited by someone who knows what good food tastes like. Starting from chips and salsas ( creamy green and red spicy) and appetizer to dessert, everything was so good. Service was exceptionally good and professional. Manager came up to check on us and we asked him if they have been considered to open another location in Austin or Round Rock. They would definitely gain their clientele very fast. Another great restaurant ruined by poor customer service after watching the other 5 tables eat their food for 30 min they realized we didn't have any food. Served my kid a child's plate a forgot about everyone else, manger did come over we asked for the food to go after being there for a total of a hour. El Toro - Mexican - Baytown - 1.25 Stars There are some things that we once thought nobody should ever do, that we now call happy accidents. And then there is El Toro. A Mexican restaurant so blasphemously dreadful that if the pope were from Mexico, he would issue a "papal bull" and nail "95 problems" to the front door. Calvinists are not the only ones who might say that we ate here and could not choose otherwise, as we craved Mexican food and I "did not know the day or the hour" when Ricardo's, also in the area, had closed. It was clear that we were not among God's elect tonight when we walked inside to be greeted by a cornucopia of disorganized staff whose completely non-Hispanic complexions looked far more like they belonged at a Panera Bread than a Mexican joint, and sat down to be served one of the saddest baskets of chips and salsa to be found this side of Dante's Inferno. They say that hell is hot, but it's actually green salsa that basically is sour cream with cilantro whipped into it, red salsa that basically tastes like Hunt's jarred tomatoes, and chips that crumble to the touch like decaying plaster, all so lacking in salt that even a pillar that used to be Lot's wife could not have made them palatable. Would you believe that THIS is the only Mexican restaurant I've been to with a chips and salsa charge ($2.49) if you don't order food? Which I almost did anyway because I knew we were in for something more hideous. We were waited on reasonably quickly, but our well-meaning and friendly waitress seemed as scatterbrained from being overworked as Michael Scott at a Dundie party. She repeatedly remarked how new she was, and by now I began to feel sorry she'd walked into this when she obviously cares. We had gluten-free members of our party who were disappointed to learn the chips were flour - which another waiter later corrected and said they were actually corn. But upon tasting these chips, you'll realize it doesn't matter. Looking to escape with something reasonably decent, I ordered two cheese enchiladas. In a few minutes, a single taco shell came out onto my plate. It so resembled one sold secondhand from Taco Bell that I actually confirmed that I had ordered the right thing, and behold, I had forgotten that this came with it. Processed American jack cheese, cardboard taco shell, and mushy, flavorless tomato and lettuce with Chipotle-grade guacamole betrayed very plebeian origins, but I kept hope for my entrée based in the quite juicy and tender ground beef. I have tasted the best of cheese enchiladas in San Antonio. And here, the cheese is so obviously processed that it sticks together in a clump around the beans and tortilla shells. And it is so much worse when you bite into the tortilla to discover it oozing basically Cheez Whiz. I was only able to choke down the entire plate because the beans, if rather bland, were serviceable and had no off flavors, and the rice actually excellent, moist and with a well-rounded saltiness and slight tomato flavor. I gazed enviously at the much better-looking flautas that my dining companion ordered, and eavesdropped on the conversation one other waiter had with a new customer about the fideo soup that I had considered ordering, thinking its less commercialized nature might mean it was at least slightly homemade. "Fideo? Well, it's not my favorite, but it's okay." Which settles the deal for me. If our party who's had eight years of good experience with the food here was disappointed with the food and service, saying they had not ever been like this, and even the STAFF doesn't like it, I feel totally vindicated and guiltless in proclaiming that one should "abandon all hope ye who enter here" in anything resembling passable Mexican food at El Toro. Start chanting "Pie Jesu Domine," go to Eduardo's or Los Ramirez, and "go and sin no more" and stay away from El Toro. read more

Got food poisoning off squirrelly chicken in a burrito. I was the only one at our table who ate anything with chicken and I GOT REALLY SICK that same night shortly after eating. The meat didn't seem right at the time. It was cubes of chicken with a play-doh like texture inside the burrito. Besides the food poisoning, the prices are way inflated for what you get. A "large queso" - think a typical bowl of melted cheese was $13 and my daughter (light eater) wanted just one beef fajita taco that was $17. One taco. Sooooo...anyways, not going back. read more

I had the stuffed avocado with chicken and the plate was huge. Definitely worth the money and cooked to perfection. This place is high up on my Tex mex tier list, and the complimentary chips and sauce are a nice touch. That being said it was pretty busy when we went around 11. We got seated pretty quickly, but the server took a long time (around 10-15 mins) to get our food. When we got it, the wait was worth it. Will definitely be going again. read more

I'm talking about the OLD El Toro over on Decker Dr by the OLD San Jacinto Hospital. Sure, there is the brand new one down on Garth towards I-10 ( which is also reviewed on Yelp) but, I like this one better. Why? Its quieter. That does it for me! The newer El Toro is packed all the time. I enjoy the slower pace of the El Toro on Decker. You are sure to get a table or booth most of the time. Sure, it still gets crowded at lunch time but right after its smooth sailing! Nice quaint and quiet atmosphere. Fast service. Good simple Mexican food. I'm going to say good and not great because I have had better. The menu is smaller than at the newer restaurant but you can get off the menu items if you ask. So, I like their food selection and quality, its just not the "best ever." Great place for an affordable lunch/dinner. Of course my favorite thing about El Toro is the ice cream machine!! After each meal I load up my cone for a good ole vanilla swirl. Good times right there! read more

After reading these reviews, I was scared to come and eat here. Usually bad reviews means crappy service and equally crappy food. I was actually relieved when we were greeted by a friendly hostess and an acceptable waitress. (Okay, she wasn't overtly friendly but she did a really good job and keep my drinks refilled!) I really wanted to try the tabletop guacamole (basically, a grumpy waitress or waiter comes over and does a piss-poor performance of making you fresh guacamole with any toppings you could desire) but for 10$, I wasn't biting. That's ridiculous. We stuck with the green and red salsa and fresh chips. I LOVE the green salsa. It isn't as great as Igauna Joe's. (IJ's seems to have more flavor), but it was wonderful with warm chips and on top of my burrito! I ordered the "Burrito Con Queso" which is basically a flour tortilla with peppers, onions, rice, beans, fajita meat (for an extra charge) topped with a delicious cheese con queso sauce. It was really delicious and I ended up taking half of it home for lunch the next day. My husband ordered the "Monterrey Family Dinner" which came with a pretty good assortment of a few items; a fajita taco, a tamale, with one beef and one cheese enchilada topped with some sort of sauce. It also came with a little guacamole salad with sour cream, pico de gallo and guacamole for adding to the fajita taco. Everything was good. All in all, I think we got a decent amount of food for the price and our waitress was really good at keeping our drinks refilled and clearing the table. I've been coming to this location most of my life; the food has always been great (best cheese enchiladas I've had anywhere), the staff has always been courteous, and the atmosphere has always been cozy, and it remains my family's favorite place to eat out when we're all together. Of course the newer, bigger location on Garth is fantastic as well and I enjoy it very much, but something about the familiar, comfortable atmosphere of this smaller location will always make it my personal favorite. It could be nostalgia; this was always my grandad's favorite restaurant too (we all order his favorite Poco Peso plate once a year in his memory) and it's been a part of my life since I was a little chap, but this place also just has a charm of its own that simply can't be recreated in a large-scale restaurant. On a side note, I have never been to the original location on Bayway and can't speak for it, but I haven't heard particularly good things about the service at that one... read more

My family and I ordered from the Grubhub app this evening and the timing was excellent but the order wasn't quite right due to a menu confusion within the app. I called the restaurant and the manager Mike was super on top of it and handled the issue in the utmost professional manner and made it right. He even mentioned speaking with the corporate office to make a change within the app. On top of the awesome customer service...the food was absolutely amazing! My Total was $16.65 (The Actual Receipt: Fajita for one $11.99 Beef $1.60 Flour Tortillas $ 1.25 Subtotal $14.84 Food Tax $1.22 To Go Charge $0.59 Total $16.65 I was going to just walkaway but,,, I didn't want to go elsewhere because I was tired from work, But for sure I will never go to this place again. This is the original "El Toro" in Baytown. Generally, I've heard that this location is the best. I can't properly review my food because I ordered Bean and Cheese nachos. How can that get messed up? Well, initially the chips were stale. Our server was gracious and replaced my lunch with fresh chips. My husband had no complaint with his food until we got the bill. He ordered the "Tacos al Carbon" dinner: $13.75 and up charged him $1.70 for beef fajita. $3.10 for one cheese enchilada. $10.25 for a large queso, bean nachos: $9.15. Really?
