Coffee and chicory
Nicholas M.

Went to this place early evening. Hole-in-the wall on the corner of the road. Very nice inside. We were sat right near the kitchen/wait staff area. Very friendly staff. The coffee and chicory was served in a beautiful China pot. Chicken and sausage gumbo was very good, as was the boudin. They apparently have live Jazz on Sunday afternoons. Main knock on this place is the small menu and slightly pricey mains (three tiny stuffed shrimp for $20+ is a bit steep).

If you like cajun food, you need to get yourself to Elder's! This spot has been on my list of restaurants to try, and we were blessed to get to eat there on a Wednesday night this week. I imagine they do banging lunch business, but dinner time on Wed was pretty light. The owner/manager came out and directed us to the doors leading to the dining room and we had our pick of tables. We ordered the boudin to start, and I ordered the fried shrimp po boy with dirty rice as an additional side (the sandwiches do not come with a side) and my husband ordered the chicken tenders with red beans and rice and cajun potato salad. The boudin came out fairly quickly and was so, so good! The rice was the perfect squishy texture to give it that meaty sausage mouthfeel. It was very well spiced and seasoned, and perfectly cooked. The po boy was HUGE. There was so much shrimp on it, I was in heaven! One of the best po boy sandwiches I have had anywhere, hands down. The shrimp were hot and crispy, with a very well seasoned breading. The lettuce, tomato, and pickles were cool, crunchy, and fresh, and the bread was grilled perfection, with a generous slathering of remoulade sauce (I asked for extra, I'm a sucker for sauces!). I didn't try a tender, but my husband said they were awesome, and we could tell the breading was the same on the chicken as it was on the shrimp. The red beans and rice were a bowl of comfort, let me tell you. The only criticism I have is that they could maybe use a little more salt, but honestly we were fine eating them as they came. The potato salad was surprisingly delicious, it was creamy with firm (but not underdone) potatoes, well seasoned, and it had one little crawfish bit in it! Not sure if that slipped in there by accident, but I enjoyed that bite nonetheless. As good as everything was, it was the dirty rice that stole the show! Best dirty rice I have ever had. It was so good that, on my first bite of it, I had to set down my fork, close my eyes, and savor all that delicious flavor in my mouth! We decided to try the bread pudding for dessert after confirming it did not have raisins in it (my dh doesn't care for raisins). We received a good portion of pudding with a very tasty and strong rum sauce. Perfect way to end the meal! They did get our sides a little mixed up, and the dirty rice ended up on my husband's plate instead of coming with my sandwich. It was fine, since we were planning to share everything anyway, but I feel I should mention. Our meal at Elder's was one of the best meals we have had in quite some time. It was so good that we are planning to come back for my birthday in a couple of weeks! It will be a Friday night, so we can enjoy some jazz with our meal. Elder's will be in our regular rotation for sure. It didn't hurt that the service felt very personal, and we were well taken care of.

We read a lot of reviews about Elders so we tried it today. Thumbs up! I ate the stuffed shrimp, Cajun potato salad and grits. My husband had the blackened catfish, red beans and rice and Cajun potato salad. I also had the Sam ice tea. Not a fan of ice tea, but this one was strawberry and watermelon flavored tea. I even got a refill . The stuffed shrimps were very tasty and filled me up. They were fried and spiced to perfection. Let me tell you about the Cajun potato salad, yummy delicious and topped with crawfish. I ate almost all of it. The grits was good too. This is a hidden gem in Converse. I hope people will continue to support this restaurant. The owners offer a Breaking Bread every Tuesday at 7pm. Elders host free dinner with a word from the Lord. The Breaking Bread is open to the public and last one hour. We ordered beignet to go, but decided to try it . We will definitely need to come back.

Pretty amazing spot! They have a small menu with Louisiana specialties. I had the stuffed shrimp and my boyfriend had the blackened tilapia. I loved my stuffed shrimp but I think the tilapia was definitely my favorite. Also have the Sam Water when you are there! The beignets and chickory coffee were amazing to end dinner. The service was great and the restaurants dining room had nice homey decor. I will be coming back!

Best Cajun food I have tried! Great customer service, friendly and attentive. Clean restaurant. We were told they also have live music on Sundays. I had the brunch sampler. Will return!

So, overall the food was good, but a few things. I ordered my food to go, the website estimated 20 minutes. I got there a little after that time and it seemed like they had just started my order of shrimp po boy with fries. Total time from order to get food was 35 minutes, which seems like a long time for some fried shrimp. I also am still not sure how I feel about having to pay separately for the fries especially when the platters include 2 sides. Lastly, the general atmosphere was not like a restaurant. It was super hot, leading me to think the ventilation wasn't working well. The pick up area had a counter with no set order or pay area, a personal type Keurig machine and various detritus giving it an unkempt air. I haven't decided if I'll be back yet.

Really friendly service and the dish that we ordered was delicious. I had never eaten stuffed shrimp before, prawn with blue crab stuffing. I recommend this place and will try out other dishes next time.

This visit to Sea Island Shrimp House exceeded even our already high expectations. Megan was, without question, one of the most pleasant and professional servers we've had in a long time. She struck that perfect balance of attentiveness and authenticity, going out of her way to ensure our dining experience was seamless and enjoyable. A small moment that really stood out--when I asked about the lemon pepper seasoning available to customers, she took the extra step to explain that it wasn't the same as what they use in the kitchen. Instead of leaving it there, she proactively checked with the manager to see if we could purchase the actual seasoning to take home. That level of initiative is rare and appreciated. Equally impressive was Megan's humility--she was quick to credit their new chef, Anthony, for the quality of the meal. And she was right to do so. Anthony may be new, but the execution was exceptional. This was, without exaggeration, the best fish we've had at this location--perfectly seasoned, fresh, and cooked with precision. Kudos to the entire team at Sea Island on Forum I-35. Experiences like this are what turn a reliable stop into a standout destination. We'll definitely be back--more than once--before heading home.
