Six of us walked out of there with a $400 bill and that was not even getting our own dishes-We shared! It was tasty but it all dishes use the same ingredients -cheap seeds, cheap parsley, cheap nuts, lotsa sauce. Also, the wine selection is meh and the least expensive was $16 a glass. give me a break people. There's Great Texas wines you can buy and sell for $12-14 A glass I try not to leave negative reviews, but this is not OK. Having read about Elementary all over socials, I was excited to try it out. It's a a cute set up inside with their elementary school theme throughout. We looked to our server for some recommendations on the menu and she was very knowledgeable, however suggested we order waaaaay to much food (2 dishes from each section, so 10 plates between two). While some dishes are small, most are normal sized plates of food, and 1 per section would have been plenty. The banh mi eclair was a cute and flavorful take on a banh mi, and the burrata toast was delicious - a truly fantastic flavor combo. However the gnocchi was underwhelming and the ramen risotto, while looked great was SO salty. My final comment is that it is very pricey. We had a $400 check (food plus 3 cocktails per person) for two people, which is one of the priciest meals I have had in Austin. I'm not sure I would come back to elementary personally, it's definitely a vibey spot with some flavorful dishes - just a little overpriced for what it is in my opinion. read more

I was pretty disappointed by Elementary. First off, their drinks are a little too crazy and we didn't feel like we wanted to experiment so we ended up getting a bottle of wine instead. We really liked the sweet potato and were very excited for the carrots which sounded and even looked really great but we're very underwhelming. We placed the order pretty quickly and they took forever to come out with our apps and smaller plates and then once they did we felt rushed coz they wanted to clear our plates. Another thing that was truly disappointing to me as a vegetarian was not having a single pasta dish be vegetarian. It's not hard to make one of 3 pasta dishes vegetarian and should be part of any menu given how many people are vegetarian now. Service was great, I didn't like my first drink (based off personal preference not bc the drink was bad) and they were helpful on changing it for one I enjoyed. Carrots were 7/10 I didn't think the dish was a cold one and I'm not into fennel too much which I think was on there ? If I mistaken just something bitter in the dish I didn't love entirely Hamachi was 8 / 10 super fresh and light loved the flavor profile of this dish Tiger prawns 8/10 super meaty prawns and the curry sauce was delicious Gnocchi 9/10 the gnocchi itself was super pillowy and buttery not dense at all it was light and airy in the perfect way. Such a cute spot for dinner! I visited for the first time with friends in August 2023 and have been back several times since. We loved the whimsical vibe and friendly atmosphere. Really great place to have a conversation over a family-style meal, since the music isn't too loud. The food is innovative and takes inspiration from lots of different cuisines. I love how they take interesting flavors and combine them in ways that feel fun and approachable. The menu changes often, since it is farm-to table, so you probably won't get the same meal every time. But you can count on your meal to be consistently good. I've never had a bad meal or drink here! Service is fantastic; the staff know the menu well and are very attentive and friendly. 11/10 recommend! read more

Very popular spot on S. Lamar. The restaurant has a great vibe and has tons of beautiful couples sipping on creative cocktails and interesting wines. Mind you cocktails will run ~$16 and wine $15+. The decor is inviting and refined-Austin and service, particularly among the bartending staff, is quite good. The knock of two stars comes from price and quality of food. The drinks, while pricey, are on par with the neighborhood. I had a very good paper plane that cost about $16. I held off on the wine largely due to price per glass. The food looked great on paper but when delivered was kind of a sloppy presentation and tasted like it was doused in vinegar. I had both their Hamasa Crudo and Ramen Risotto and was left smacking my lips due to the tanginess of both. The vinegar was so overpowering I could barely taste the protein. Fortunately the server hooked me up with water so I could at least finish the pork belly (which was very good) on the risotto. Overall, for $80 I would hope for more than a solid cocktail, an okay crudo (4 pieces), and a vinegar bomb plate of rice. It was a cool spot but the food just missed the mark. read more

Went for my best friends birthday tonight, absolutely do not recommend. #1. Asked for a deep red wine, I told our waiter I loved very deep, dark and berry. Was given a very acidic, light wine. Think alcoholic kombucha. (Tried three wines, all are this type) #2. The food is tiny, overly complicated, and pretentious. #3. Birthday girl left with No Dessert. A complete sin. Honestly I was blown away. I wasn't expecting much but that ramen risotto was out of this world. We also got the scallops with apples and it was phenomenal. Drinks were good and so much better with happy hour prices. The prices in general are a bit outrageous but I do know risotto is a refined dish that takes care so I'll give it a pass. Cute space, great wine menu. Yesterday was day 1 I think and I'm curious how things will be a few months from now. We ate at suerte a week ago which was beyond amazing so my expectations were a bit high but.... Not gonna lie I was a bit disappointed with the food. The menu gave me the impression that it would be slightly more elevated than a super casual dining experience. Banh mi eclair was good but heavy on the pate and mine had a really hard piece of skin I thought was a bone, think if the carrots were a bit more pickled like traditional banh mi's it would've balanced out the pate. The panzanella salad tasted ok. Would've preferred more tomato and peach over arugula being a filler. Pappardelle was a bit undercooked (coming from someone who loves a good Al dente pasta) but the short rib was tasty. Relative to other Austin restaurants I'd say elementary is pretty average food wise. Maybe I'm just not used to things in Austin yet but.... When the bartender (we sat at the bar) wanted to clear empty dishes she'd ask us to hand it to her which I thought was kind of unusual. Not bad just diff to me, I've never experienced that before. She was really nice and friendly and there were a few obstacles between us like cocktail ingredients and stuff but def a first for me. I guess based on the menu I expected a slightly different experience. Curious what their most popular dishes will be in time and would love to go back and try it again. read more

Been waiting to try Elementary, feel like they did a marketing blitz all over Instagram and TikTok because reservations were sold out but we went as a group of 4 right at 5pm and got seats at the bar. Cute decor which was on theme, but the place was half filled for most of the time we were there and it was loud and hot!! Not sure if the HVAC wasn't working, but half way through dinner we were all sweating. We got a round of drinks and then ordered several dishes which ended up being the perfect amount of food. Drinks of note include the faux negroni (really light and floral) and the watermelon martini (booze forward and delish). Food wise we ordered (filled a group of 4) - - lions mane: very small (only three bites) but flavored well and the sauce tasted like apple sauce - peach panzanella salad: perfect size, good dressing, bread perfectly grilled - burrata toast: one of my favs, a good dollop of burrata on a large slice of bread with fermented blue berries (I wanted more) - sweet potatoes: I liked the sauce on it, but it was a meh dish - gnocchi: the sauce and garnishes were really good on this, and the gnocchi was so soft and light. I wanted more!! - chicken: I didn't partake in this, but the group finished it and liked it a lot - cookies & milk: my fav. The cookies were dense and delish, the milk jam tasted like condensed milk, and the warm malted milk was the highlight - pumpkin cake: pumpkin spice was nice but the cake was a bit dry Overall I think the bill was around $270 before tip, I think for what we got it felt pricier than similar meals around town, but it was a nice night overall. read more

First time at elementary and we thought the service and food was pretty good. The burrata toast was delicious with the blueberries and honey drizzle. The appetizer was perfectly toasted with a nice toasty edge. The crudo was pretty creative and it reminded me of jalapeño hamachi dishes at other restaurants. Thought the ramen risotto was saltier than I hoped for and is basically Japanese Zozui. Wished the cookies were warm but it was only the milk that was warm. This place was allllllright. Prices were pretty insane for the amount of food you're getting. $30 for TWO prawns with sauce on them seems unreal, but the tortellini was solid! My bill was $128 with tip and I feel like I'm going to be hungry in about an hour. This place is a go-to in the South Austin area. I love the playful interior and the staff was very welcoming & attentive. From the color scheme to the adorable cubbies and wide-ruled paper menu design, the space truly does transport you back to elementary school in the most charming sense. I started with the Banh Mi Eclair which brough FULL flavor and had fun playing with decadent textures. I regret not also ordering the Birria Soup Dumplings, as I overheard the table next to me raving about them. I followed with the XO Summer Squash (my personal favorite) in terms of flavor combination. I eat tons of squash at home when it's in season and would have never arrived at a flavor combination remotely in the realm of Elementary's iteration. Eating this dish definitely expanded my understanding of how squash can and should be paired, as most good dishes that feature a vegetable as the central ingredient should. I also had the Seared Scallops which were *chefs kiss* seared to a golden-brown perfection and accompanied by a delicious & texturally refreshing apple & hazelnut duo that kept me dipping my fork back down to scrape the plate clean. I finished with the Pappardelle - which did not disappoint as a closer and left me more than satiated in terms of portion. The short rib was melt-in-your-mouth and balanced nicely with the kale sauce. Consistent with other reviews, I had two cocktails that were absolutely stellar. The eggo-spresso martini was everything you want in an espresso martini + more and the passionfruit gochujang sour was out of this world. It's hard for me not to love any cocktail with an egg-white topper. Price on both food + drink is on par for a restaurant of this caliber in South Austin. I will most definitely be back soon to try more of the hyper-seasonal menu, especially as we move into late summer/early fall. Looking forward to it! read more

Brunch. Heard good things and saw all the hype from food bloggers in Austin I trust. They however talked about dinner, not brunch. I think I know why. Nothing worth writing home about unfortunately with what we got. Maybe I'll come back for dinner another time. Even with the salsa macha, there was absolutely no taste or excitement on The Scram. French toast was good, but again nothing to write here about, other than it's a sliced baguette, not toast like you'd expect. Chicken & Waffle with Kimchi; a tang and a unique taste, but not for $28 and for brunch in the morning. Weird choice. Also, no reservations were available when I checked for an hour ahead of time, only 2 hours before. Ok, no prob, it says walk-ins welcome and encouraged on the ol website. Please make me feel like that when I walk-in. I'm not a tourist, so it's nice to not be made to feel like one who is oblivious to Austin's intimate sized restaurants. I'll update my review once I try dinner here. Oh and the parking lot here is not big car friendly. Bring a small car, not your Excursions, folks. read more

My first visit to Elementary was on their opening night. Eager to dive into their menu, I tried the crudo, which unfortunately missed the mark for me. The fish lacked quality and was floating in way too much liquid with more acidity then I'm used to. Their bartending was on point - with a high volume of great looking cocktails flying from the bar. But, based on the crudo, I skipped ordering an entre. Fast forward to my second visit, I was still impressed by the interior design and the overall vibe of the place. - it had a nice buzz to it. The bartender, consistent with my previous experience, was exceptional, "crafting" a martini that was perfect. Opting for the chicken entrée this time, I was unfortunately disappointed once again. For $36, it was a literally a half chicken (not airline cut) making it super awkward to eat. The flavor relied heavily on the skin, which was too sweet for my taste due to the excessive hot honey. The side dish of potatoes, chorizo, a pink sauce, and fennel slices did not sit well visually. Mixing it together made it much worse - never had that happen at a restaurant before, literally had to power through it. Its heavy consistency wasn't the right match for the literal half chicken. Not surprised that they have 3.5 stars overall, which is not good for Austin - where reviewers are fairly generous. I hope they get better or it will end up like 8-bit Pizza (which failed in the same location before them). read more

We ordered nine items, including dessert, and left hungry. Regarding the taste of the food...again just meh. None of us could think of something we'd order again. We got the Milk and Cookies, and the cookies were delicious! One glass of milk was served for our party of four. If the intention is to only dip the cookies in the milk, the cookies are too crumbly for that. Servers were friendly! Quality of service lacked. Appropriate utensils were delivered late. Water glasses refilled once. Fresh plates weren't given until our final dinner item arrived. Overall, just meh. The experience wasn't great and wasn't horrible. I am so happy I finally came to this new Austin spot. I've seen it everywhere on my social media, so I had been dying to come try it with my bestie. We arrived right when they opened at 5 p.m, and we were seated immediately. We loved getting to sit at the bar and watch the bartenders not only make our drinks but also other guests! Their bartenders clearly care about providing top notch cocktails. You'll know I'm right when you try their drinks! I had the kool-aid cosmo, and my friend had the eggo-spresso martini. We loved them both! I ordered us milk and cookies for dessert, and these cookies are literally AMAZING. They are brought warm and fresh; are crisp on the outside but gooey on the inside! Their menu changes regularly, but their dessert stays the same. I love how much they stick to this elementary theme. Their restaurant is decked out in red, yellow, and blue. They even have monkey bars at the bar! I definitely recommend coming here for some drinks or a cute date night spot! read more

First off, the vibe is very cute - mix of classroom, retro chic style that feels both swanky and homey. We don't really drink alcohol, so can't speak to the beverages, but our water was refilled constantly - which honestly isn't a norm so we stayed very hydrated. Food: Crushed Potatoes - 3/5 good appetizer, not amazing but tasty and nice. It's new to the menu. For the price, I'd say it could use an extra wow factor to be a hit. Mussels - 5/5 so delicious. The bread it comes with, dipping it in the broth, THE BROTH OMG, and the mussels themselves. We loved this one. Risotto - 4/5 we heard it's what put them on the map, and it was definitely really good, but didn't end up being our favorite, mainly because the gnocchi slapped to hard and they came out together. Gnocchi - 5/5 you gotta get it (as long as you don't mind some spice) they melt in your mouth, the oil/sauce it comes with is so bomb. We were obsessed with this one; probably best plate of the night. Duck - 4.5/5 honestly it was so delicious, but the gnocchi hit harder, but we still loved this one. The puree was very tasty and also unique. It was cooked medium, which we didn't know could be done but loved it. Milk and cookies - 3.8/5 the milk was delicious and so were the cookies; the cookies were room temp, and if they were warm it probably would've been closer to a 4.5/5. But was a very cute and surprisingly yummy way to end a solid dinner. Service: 5/5 the staff was so nice, really funny, and very attentive. We had Dre - I wish I could be his friend because he's such a solid guy and has a great vibe and took great care of us. Elementary is definitely a great spot, I welcome it to Austin, and I'm excited to go back bc I hear the menu changes often. Went there with 10 people and we had the greatest time, it was about 8pm and we went next door to golden goose to await res. Got the text and proceeded to seat us. Every town on the member ordered and nothing was not appreciated in flavor and taste. The salads were so tasty and on point that it collided with the proteins to fulfill a whole meal. The steak, wagyu burger were to die for. I visited Elementary on a Wednesday evening for a small girls night. There was a wait for a table since we didn't make reservations so we sat at the bar until a table became available. The restaurant is small, yet cozy and was true to the elementary school theme. The bartender was super knowledgeable and made some of the best drinks I've had in a while. The food was beautiful and delicious. Everything seemed to have an Asian influence which I love. Some dishes reminded me of my childhood. Everything was cooked perfectly and had nice flavor. The service was amazing as well. Everyone that worked there were friendly and seemed to love their job. I would give it 5 stars if the music weren't so loud. I'm already hard of hearing and unfortunately I could barely hear anything my girlfriends said. But at least the playlist was good. So this was my first time in finer/fine dining and I was amazed by the taste and the setting I went by myself for the first time and was welcomed with open arms I was tried a variety of options and highly recommend the focaccia toast which was salty yet complex texture and the turnips appetizer you had to play around with the flavors which was so much fun as for my main course I had the ramen risotto which blew me out if this world I've made risottos in the past but never tried one professionally and it was amazing especially the way the chefs approach the dish was super unique! Highly recommended trying their unique cocktails I had the what's up dunc and the smoking paper plane both which had fabulous presentation and taste for a first timer in this new gourmet food lifestyle this was an excellent place to start sorry for the poor photos I couldn't help myself but to dig in to the meals first before I took a photo to remember this fantastic time I was smiling the whole time read more

I went here for a recent job promotion and honestly left feeling dissapointed. I had high expectations for how much the restaraunt has been marketed on tik tok and decided to choose this place to celebrate. My boyfriend and I spent $150 and ordered only a couple items from the menu. We both got the ramen risotto and it was so salty I couldn't even finish mine. An absolute gem. I'm afraid the word will get out and getting a reservation will be impossible. Came for brunch from a brand new menu. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. We shared the spam musibi as a starter. First time I'd had it and wouldn't have normally ordered, but my daughter is a fan so we decided to include it. Did not disappoint.
