I want to start this off my saying I've been to Elephant & castle growing up. Always coming here before or after Celtics games. I decided to bring my girlfriend here and try it again. The place looks awesome still, That being said the food is awful. I the Castle Club House. Essentially a turkey club, you'd be better off going to hannaford for a boxed sandwich. Last night (10/13) some friends and I went to Elephant Castle to get some drinks after work. Three of us came in and asked the host if we could sit at a table if we were just getting drinks, happened to point in the direction of table of six to which he responded 'Psh, not the three of you cannot sit a table of six.' While looking at us like we're dumb. That's not what we meant, but even if we did, it didn't warrant such a rude response. We get seated at a table for four. When the waitress comes over we let her know we're just getting drinks. She immediately informs us we can't sit there, that it's dinner time and they are packed (mind you there are 5+ tables open in view, and whole separate dining area with empty tables as well). We inform her we let the host know we were just getting drinks and he seated us here. In a condescending tone she lets us know we clearly confused him and we can't sit here. So we let her know it's fine, we'll go somewhere else. To which she responds, 'ok, bye bye'. You are in the customer service business!!! It's not uncommon for restaurants to reserve tables for patrons who are ordering food, that I understand. But the lack of tact, manners, and common curtesy in which we were communicated to was extremely off-putting. And if we're being honest, with so many dining options in downtown Boston, nobody goes to Elephant Castle for the food. Now, I won't even be returning for drinks. read more

We went to the E & C today, on a day when it was 17 degrees out with a wind chill of less than zero, and we were seated next to a "heating" vent that was blowing COLD air on us! I mentioned it to both the hostess and the waitress, and they both mumbled something about "talking to somebody about it". Yeah right. I wonder how long that thing has been broken? We had the usual stressed out-looking waitress, but at least this time I knew to order the fish and chips. Do not order anything but the fish and chips or a burger here. I came to this London-themed bar with my coworkers to celebrate my manager's goodbye party on a late Friday afternoon. It was crowded and somewhat loud. My coworkers were able to get some decent appetizers with my drinks, a bowl filled with Sweet Potato Fries and a plate filled with Buffalo Chicken Wings. I actually found the sweet potato fries pretty good. They were just okay when eaten plain, however there was a dipping sauce that made a serious difference in the flavor. The sauce that was provided was some sort of ketchup and mayonnaise hybrid mixture that made the sweet potato fries almost addictive to eat. It was probably the tastiest sauce I had that can go well with not only sweet potato fries, but also regular fries, hamburgers, and various sandwiches such as your typical club sandwich you could possibly get at a deli. As for the Buffalo Chicken Wings, they were probably the least spiciest Buffalo Chicken wings I have ever eaten in Boston. I barely tasted any spice in it, which can be okay, especially if you are not in the mood for anything spicy. Texture of the meat was a tad dry on some ends. The Blue Cheese dressing was okay, nothing special. Some of the wings were really meaty, and that made up for the lack of spice in the sauce. I guess if you really want Buffalo Chicken Wings without the spice this is not a bad place to turn to. But where's the fun in eating Buffalo Chicken Wings without adding even the slightest bit of spice inside it? I had three beers from this place. I had Coors Light, a Sam Adams Summer Ale, and a Fuller's London Pride. I never had a beer from Fuller's before, so I ordered the London Pride on a whim. The London Pride was probably one of the most bitter beers I drank, but it was a great and refreshing alternative to the American beers that I sometimes get tired of drinking when I am out for the night. The place does have some average flat screen TVs and they can air some good soccer games from the Fox Soccer Channel. I was able to catch some long highlights of a UEFA Champions League Semifinal between Bayern Munich and Lyon. Although the actual match was played earlier, it still looked awesome and even more awesome in the best HD possible. Overall, I would probably come back again if I really want some of the memories of my last trip to London due to the theme and the interior of the bar, and if I am really in the mood to get a Fuller's London Pride. read more

Our first stop after a late night arrival in Boston. This restaurant was attached to our hotel, the Club Quarters so it was a natural decision after a long flight. This place is decorated to look like an old British pub, dark wood, dark artwork, wood tables. The cocktail menu and beer offerings were ok, nothing that really surprised me or made me say oh wow ok! We got there around 11pm, so naturally there weren't many people there. this place may be better when its full, as it felt kinda cold. Anywho, back to the food. We were recommended the bacon poutine and pretzel nuggets. The pretzel nuggets are more like pretzel RODS theyre super long, but very good if you like pretzels. outside was a little crunchy, inside was nice and soft. served with a great mustard. The poutine....ah the poutine. The bacon was INCREDIBLE and we all fought over every last french fry. If I hadn't already placed my order for my entree, i would have gotten another just for me. Entrees is where this place went downhill for us. I ordered the sliced steak sandwich, which came to me on a very large roll, with arugula, red onion, goat cheese and a sliced steak. It looked beautiful and I was excited to dive in....i was disappointed. The steak was SO dry, and overly marinated and overly charred. The arugula had no taste, the only thing i tasted after that bite was the goat cheese. The bread also seemed stale and that they tried to bring it back to life by toasting it, which just makes it chewy. Not good, I ended up just taking a couple more bites and finishing the fries. The others at the table got the blue cheese burger (also very very dry, he only ate half) the fish and chips (SO greasy, he took the breading off and just ate the fish) and the turkey club (standard, not bad, not great, just a sandwich). Overall, the service was great and the apps were good, but they need some definite work on the entrees. I can only comment on the dessert and ambience, as my friend and I just stopped in for dessert. They actually have several (about six) dessert options available. My friend and I shared their St. Patrick's Day special dessert, which consisted of layers of chocolate cake alternating with layers of Bailey's Irish Cream mousse. It was topped off with a sliced strawberry and whipped cream. Delicious!!! The general ambience is a mix of a pub and restaurant. The front is a large bar, with a dining area in the back. They have a *huge* TV for watching sports. I had to sit in front of my friend so that she could not get a sneak peak at the current score for that night's Bruins game! I had a toasted bagel with cream cheese (basic, fine) and a side of turkey sausage (not very flavorful) my wife had the Omelette Station (omelet with bacon, cheddar and tomato - adequate) with home fries (rubbery and tasting strongly of Rosemary). We had come in for drinks the night before and enjoyed The British selections on tap. The lunch and dinner menu looked interesting, but we aren't staying much longer on this short trip. read more

This place is really close to my workplace, so I like to pop in for lunch or after work for a drink with friends. We've also had a few work-related functions here, and I've never had a bad experience. The servers are great whether you're alone or with a large group, and they really get into the party spirit if that's what you're after, or leave you be if you just wanna chill. Their appetizers are all good, literally no way to go wrong. Wings, chips, fondue, fries, pizza, etc. All so good. I haven't eaten dinner here, only had apps and drinks, but their Moscow mule is one of my favorites in the city. Lunch options are lighter and smaller portions, but still plenty of very tasty food for a good price. They don't have a ton of gluten-free or vegan/vegetarian options on the menu, but if you ask the servers for help they're happy to recommend additional items that can be modified by the kitchen to fit those needs. I came here for after work drinks for the first time last night, and had a great time. Its crowded and seems like a popular spot, but it isn't overly loud which is typical for a bar on a Friday after work; it was nice being able to hear a conversation. I got a few British beers I'd never had before which were decent, definitely nice to try something new. I didn't get any food but some people behind me got the nachos and they smelled amazing. I wish I could tell you I was rude (because there have been times) but today I was trying to be nice and was greeted by rudeness. How could I order something else with that attitude? She convinced me with the fish & chips with sweet potato fries. The food arrived quick & I couldn't believe the size of this fish. NEVER had fish & chips with fish this large. It's only 1 piece, but that's all you need. The reason for 4 stars & not 5 is the sweet potato fries. Texture was just off. I'm not a fry type person but these struck me as just odd. So, that is a personal preference on them. Everything was cooked to perfection. Its served with their homemade tartar sauce. The atmosphere here is like I thought very warm. Met up with an old friend to catch up. Got the feta and tomatoes app, delicious. My friend got a burger and I got the steak salad. Decent flavor but the steak was fatty and the salad had 3 mushrooms and the rest was romaine and cheese. My complaints, however, have nothing to do with the food. Our server seemed irritated that we were there in the first place, although we arrived at an empty restaurant. He told us there was a 90 minute max seating time- in my experience, this is a rule meant to help restaurants turn tables when they're busy due to limited seating caused by the 6' rule, and the time limit has nothing to do with an actual health code. Anyway, when our time was up, our waiter informed us that we had reached 90 minutes and said he could get us another round of drinks and we could hang and drink as long as we cashed out. Fine. He brought us another round of ciders and we cashed out. Not long after that, another server (or maybe manager) came by and told us that we were nearing the 2 hour mark and needed to leave soon. There were three other tables in the place besides us, it's not like they needed the table! I told the guy that our waiter had offered us another round before cashing out and had told us we could finish our drinks (we each had half a cider left when he brought us the last round, those strongbows are filling and not easy to drink quickly) he told us that the rule was in place to prevent people from just hanging out and getting drunk- my friend and I had shared an app, eaten our full entrees, and had three drinks each! He continued to rush us out even though we clearly weren't there to get drunk and were just trying to catch up over a meal and a couple ciders. Terrible service. Our experience was great! The restaurant was empty; being a holiday night in the Financial District, I wasn't surprised. We were seated promptly and our server tended to our needs quickly and effectively. I ordered the fish and chips based on a previous positive review of the pub. It didn't disappoint. The haddock was a healthy portion and it was fresh and delicious. I would turn away a poor serving of fish and chips if it disappointed me because I don't think is a difficult dish to prepare. This serving was awesome and I would have it again in a heartbeat. My friend ordered the Shepard's Pie, beef version. He asked the server for her recommendations, mainly because he wanted to hear her Boston accent (he's new to the area). She gave several recommendations including the chicken pot pie. He asked her to surprise him with his order and she selected the beef pot pie. Our food arrived a little bit slow based on how empty the restaurant was, but I'll just go with the reason being because our food was being crafted with care! His Shepard's Pie was a bit salty and hot, but m otherwise delicious. He said he enjoyed the peppery taste. He raved most about the simple side salad and deliciously modified bleu cheese dressing. He said he would come back just for the salad! The music playlist was awesome! Every song had us bouncing along as we enjoyed our meal. Value: we were happy with our meal for $34 dinner. The downhill direction taken by Elephant and Castle is analogous to Britney Spears 2007. I adored this place when it didn't feel like an expensive Uno's (yes, I'm going there). I want to begin by explaining why I used to love this place. First of all, it feels like a slice of heaven amongst a bundle of chains in the Downtown Boston area. I eagerly went in the first time I saw it and we had experiences including being sent home with free Stella glasses, Stella girls flirting with boyfriend who was happily flirting back, hearty warm food, decently priced liquor, and kind servers. The unpredictable nature of this place has left itself to a loud bar with silenced tvs and disappearing waiters all hiding under the Union Jack to claim authenticity. My boyfriend (same dude) hated eating his entirely burnt veggie paddie and we won't be coming again even though the pretty girls might show up again (gasp). I was slightly smarter than him because I asked our waitress what she would like to eat and somewhat enjoyed my chicken pot pie and Cake Layer wine (15$ for a glass of a 11$ wine, but still good) in this apocalyptic atmosphere. While we won't be coming back this year, I do hope to find that things have settled once we do return. read more

I had a really good experience here. We purchased our meals in conjunction with the Mystery Cafe scavenger hunt which means we paid $35 for three courses. The first course, salad or soup of the day, was okay. I got the salad and I wasn't blown away. For my main course, I got stuffed Yorkshire pudding. That was delicious. Awesome waitress for our table of 7 people eating and drinking. I tried the Slum Dog. A panko crusted hot dog ensconced in garlic naan and butter chicken curry. It would have been a 10/10 if not for the hot dog. First of all it was actually 1 1/2 hot dogs. Secondly, it had serious girth. BIG. LONG. GIRTHY. And it was overly firm. I'm not even joking. It was too big and hard. That's just tellin' it like it is. The panko crust was delicious and not even a little soggy which is impressive because of the curry sauce, but again the hot dog just kind of ruined it. The Butter Chicken Poutine, however, was my favorite thing that I tried. Salty chip-style fries smothered in Indian butter chicken curry and pieces of chicken, amongst cheese curds. It was almost like Indian nachos in a way. It was amazing. Wins the prize for the best unique poutine I've ever had. Get it. The Classic Poutine was one of the better I've tried in Boston, believe it or not. The wide cut fries really helped to scoop up the plentiful gravy and there was a good ratio of gravy to cheese curd, and the curds, while not properly squeaky, were at least stretchy and chewy, which is better than most half-assed shredded cheese abominations I come across in the US. The gravy was pretty thick and very beefy. Almost like beef stew, so if you don't like a very meaty flavored gravy this wouldn't be your fave. The pretzels were soft mini baguettes that were delightfully greasy (think Auntie Anne's, but a little less greasy) and came with a nice whole grain mustard for dippin'. The Fried Pickles were a smallish portion and were in pickle spear slice format rather than crinkle pickle chip format, which I didn't hate. They had a nice crusty panko coating and a delicious aioli dipping sauce, but there were only about 8 thin slices so I wouldn't recommend for the value. I went here one night and it's totally a Friday-after-work kind of place, but at this time, it was 9PM and it was Saturday, so the people that were there with their loosened neckties and cardigans draped over the back of a chair were probably feeling pretty saucy. I think we got the steak & bleu cheese crostini [steak was dry, but still pretty good], the brie & cranberry crostini [always one of my favorite combos], and something else which I can't remember. And I had a special key lime martini [it was okay, but I had one at Milky Way that was better/cheaper]. It was karaoke night and you know what that means. Bunch of amateurs. But it was actually pretty entertaining. There was an older gentleman named Jake who kept singing songs from the 70s, women in their 40s singing songs from the 80s, girls in their early to mid 20s singing songs from the late 80s/90s and just about everyone sitting at the bar was singing along, especially during the many, many Bon Jovi songs. And the packs of girls in their 20s kept singing songs in groups. I always said that people who sing karaoke songs together show a sign of weakness. They'll learn. Once I tried to sing a duet of "Bohemian Rhapsody" with my boyfriend at a work Christmas party and it ended with him leaving the stage and me by myself going "Galileo! During the week of my wedding, in June, I had a couple of experiences there, purely out of convenience since my folks and a lot of my guests were staying at the hotel above this place. My two visits were both very different from one another, and one was dinner, the other brunch. The dinner wasn't nearly as bad of an experience. It wasn't too loud, and our party of eight was able to get seated without any problems. Service was a bit on the slow side but other than that, the food was pretty good and everyone had a good time. From the burgers and salads, everything we ordered was affordable, at around $11-$14 per person and their beer selection was decent as well. However, things hit the fan during our brunch. We had a party of 30+ people and had called the reservation in 4 days in advance and even had confirmed it. Apparently, despite the multiple phone calls and confirmations, the restaurant scheduled their staff for the wrong day so when we all walked in, we didn't realize that we'd be walking in into what turned out to be a pretty disastrous experience. The confused staff was immediately overwhelmed, as was the kitchen and our brunch turned into a two hour plus ordeal where not a single one of us got to eat their dish at the same time as others. The food literally trickled in over the course of two hours, and no one actually got to really eat together. To add to salt to the wound, the area they provided us wasn't big enough, and we had to split our party into two separate sections of the restaurant which created a disconnect that we were hoping to avoid. Surprising too, especially since the restaurant itself wasn't that busy. I went with the banana stuffed french toast ($9) which was plated with some maple syrup and whipped cream and which was decent. Others ordered their eggs benedict ($10.25), their buttermilk pancakes ($8), their breakfast club ($8.50) and even the oatmeal ($6.5). The menu offered for brunch is fairly limited but once the food does come out, it does taste pretty good. So while the service there is slow, the place itself is clean and pretty spacious. And another redeeming factor is the fact that they have Michael O'Neill ( http://www.yelp.com/biz/michael-o-neill-boston ) host trivia there. He is quite possibly the best trivia host in Boston. He's there every Thursday at 6PM and will make your trip out there worth it. All in all, I'm pretty disappointed in this place. I wanted to like it. The ambiance is nice but the service was horrendous, especially the second time around. So the place looks nice. Wood everywhere. Good downtown location. Expansive beer selection. I'm hopeful. So what happened? 1) The server neglects to provide us with silverware with our meals. 2) The server forgets the clam chowder for one in our party. 3) The server brings one of us lamb curry instead of chicken curry. 4) My steak salad contained canned mushrooms while the steak was chewy and not sliced thinly. 5) We are ready for our check and the server walks past us several times before stopping to take a credit card, but only when we practically tackle him. Management is asleep at the switch here. I'm tempted to call Robert Ireland from Restaurant Impossible and ask him to come and straighten things out. I would not dine here again. I would return if my goal were to toss back a few beers in a nice bar. read more
