Yet, it took 20 minutes for the host to take my order, 15 minutes after that to get coffee and I never got my food 40 minutes in. The service here was terrible. We went on a Thursday evening and it was very busy when we arrived so we didn't mind that our waiter was pretty slow. He took forever to come back and take our drink orders. Took 20 minutes to bring us water. Took a long time to take our food orders. In contrast, about 20 minutes after we arrived a couple sat down next to us and their waitress had their food out to them before ours and then he had put the wrong table down and they were delivered our food. Awkward. He took one of our drinks and promised a new one and never delivered it. We were done for a long time before he gave us the check and then never returned to collect it. We waited and waited, and even went over to ask the bartender if she could do it and she was quite rude. Seriously, poor customer service on her part as she claimed she couldn't and said our waiter was too busy cleaning the restaurant to come back to our table. Um, okay... Finally, the nearby table's waitress took it and after another 5 minutes our waiter emerged with it. Let's just say we left less than 20% tip and we never do that. As for the food, it was good. They have a huge menu with lots of British and Indian selections. The draught list was boring. My vodka drink was very light on the alcohol. For food, we ordered the butter chicken poutine and were served the loaded poutine. Never got a chance to tell our waiter as he never checked on us and a different person delivered our main dishes. I got the stuffed Yorkshire pudding. Very boring. Tons of onions and garlic in the potatoes so I left them untouched. The roast beef was very good though. The poutine was amazing and a real winner. My dining partner got the braised lamb tacos and loved them. It'd be 4 stars if just rating the food. Only go here if you want a mediocre draught list and poor service. We called ahead and reserved seating for our large party of 10 (8 adults and 2 high chairs). Upon arrival, we were put in a back room with only small round high-top tables, which we would need 4 of to accommodate our whole party. But, they didn't have the room to put 4 together. They had high chairs for the toddlers but they did not work with the high-top tables. We asked them how we were to use the highchairs with the high-tops and their response was to shrug their shoulders. The service was slow and the food was subpar. I ordered one of the potpies and the puff pastry was still raw and the inside was still cold. The server did not return to check on us so it could be fixed until the rest of our party was finished with their food. The staff did not seem knowledgeable about the menu when asked about items. We were disappointed with the cleanliness of the restaurant. While I understand people have different views on and choices or modes of hygiene and I respect that, one of the staff members was almost unbearable to be near while serving or eating food. The vibe was more bar than that of a pub. It did not feel welcoming as many pubs usually do. read more

Sat at the bar with one other person. The bar tender was totally in his own world. It was an empty restaurant and he was taking more time to wash the glasses than he was to take drink orders. This is probably one of my favorite British restaurant among the ones I've visited. The location is perfect to catch a drink after work and the place gets pretty crowded soon so reservation might be needed. Their butter chicken is really creamy and too good and is served with naan and basmati rice. The service is pretty quick and they do have a good collection of drinks. read more

Hands down one of the best places to hang out in Boston downtown. Good bar, amazing food and is a spacious place. Many of the bars in downtown have very loud music on weekends, which makes talking to people impossible without shouting at each other. Lunch at Elephant & Castle got me in and out within an hour, which is a good thing on a weekday. Service was pleasant and friendly enough. The food didn't take too long. We were seated in the side room which was a touch less noisy and somewhat more elegant than the main bar room, as it is reminiscent of a library in a rather nice large house. However, the cushy chairs in there seat you way lower than the table, so you feel a bit like a little like a kid as you eat your meal. The single large halibut fillet in the fish & chips had a puffy light batter that, while kind of oily, was still pretty good. The chips were the fat long sort - cooked through, but not particularly crispy. I prefer crispy fries. As for the sweet potato fries I subbed with my burger, now those were rather crispy, and not too oily. Not the sweetest sweet potato fries I've ever had, but they'll do. The burger arrived with a slice of tomato, raw onion, and pickle sitting nestled on the bun top. The tomato should have been a redder specimen given the current time of the year, but the burger was just fine - cooked as ordered but still moist . After finishing my lunch, gee, was I stuffed! 8/26/09 additions - * There was a poster that greeted us at the doorway with an announcement of The Price is Right lunch menu - bbq chicken sandwich $7.99, Today's special pie (cottage today) $7.99, and Daily Lunch Combo 1/2 sandwich of the day with bowl of soup and Caesar salad $8.99... the odd thing was, there was no mention of it at the table! * Fish & Chips with cod fish came in two fillets - moist on the inside with a crispy outer shell * The Price is Right BBQ Chicken Sandwich - grilled chicken breast, bbq sauce, jack chees, coleslaw on a toasted Kaiser bun with your choice of English chips, today's soup or balsamic tossed greens - the chicken breast surprisingly came sliced! But it was tender and not at all dry. While the toasted bun was crispy on the outside as well as on the cut side. Elephant and Castle is there for you, but it's just there. It will not make you feel better, nor will it hold your hand and serve you great food. Even though this place is mediocre, some things that may actually make you smile: Fish and Chips and London Pride beer. Things that will make your long, bad day at work seem a little worse: Beef dip. Salmon sandwich. Service is up for grabs really. Sometimes it's been decent service, but many of the other times, it's just been slow and confusing- especially when we ask to pay with more than one card. Oof! For the money you pay here, I'd recommend that you go somewhere else. I have gone here many times and I used to love it. Our server told us to "f*ck off" after we informed her that a group of men were here a long time before us despite her making it her priority to have us leave due to the ninety minute rule. I respect that restaurants need to adhere to guidelines/rules, however this needs to be implemented across the board. The worst part is that Marie/Katie I forget her name wasn't even our server. She said that we should never come back. And said "you people are the worst". In reference to my friend and I that are both of color. We spoke to Billy who seemed to be a manager or supervisor, and he laughed along with the employee. Also asked if we had proof of her saying these things even though she didn't deny saying them. I recently went here with coworkers for some drinks and snacks. The service was friendly and efficient. The beer and wine selection was excellent. We had the nachos and hummus and they were both delicious. Next time I go, I'd like to try their meals and see what the menu has to offer. This place was busy, but not too busy. This place gets major points in my book for its proximity to downtown crossing, especially Filene's basement. Come here after shopping for a nice big ol' Hoegaarden. It is a bit loud, true. I can't really comment on the food, having just had some random apps, but will definitely be heading back here soon. Re-Yelp: Was here again last night and unfortunately they were out of the giant Hoegaarden I enjoyed on my last visit. However, there's still a ton of beers on tap to choose from, so I can't complain. My friend and I shared a nachos app that seriously was our dinner. It was huge! The nachos themselves were nothing to write home about but entirely decent with the beer and after all, this is a bar. No expectations of gourment cusisine. They had all the windows open too and there was a nice cross-breeze going on. Also, it was fun to watch the business types wandering around on the street. Re-Re-Yelp: Okay Elephant & Castle, now I am getting mad. Where is my freakin' Hoegaarden? This is the second time I've been here and there is no Hoegaaden. It is on the menu, but it is not on available??? I am very upset. Also, I had the steak and blue cheese salad. There were literally three chunks of blue cheese in the salad. I am not exaggerating. I've had great experiences at other Elephant & Castle locations in Toronto and Vancouver in the past, but at the Boston location, I was absolutely horrified by the service. We were a group of about 14 people last Saturday night who had come to watch the hockey game. The waitresses took our drink order but I had to ask for menus (it was dinner time). It took over 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive, and then we had to hunt down a server (literally, get up from our seats and wander through the restaurant) so that we could place food orders. Although it was only 7:30 pm, they had already run out of the stuffed Yorkshire pudding I craved. I got the steak pie instead, which was delicious. However, my boyfriend ordered the bruschetta chicken sandwich, and it was the saddest sandwich I had ever seen, with only a tiny piece of chicken. When we finished our food, the servers never came to take away the large empty plates. Each time we ordered drinks, they would take 20 minutes or more to arrive. I had to ask for a glass of water 3 times before I finally got it. Perhaps because an automatic 18% gratuity was tacked onto my bill, the servers felt no need to actually provide decent service. To top it off, the volume on the hockey game was barely audible, especially over the din of 1950's karaoke songs coming from the next room. I hope my message gets through to the owners of this place. The grilled salmon was decent, though. Service was non-existent. It took roughly 20 minutes from the end of our meal to get our check and cash out. Decided to dine here because my English husband was wanting an authentic fish & chips. Our waitress used the least possible amount of words to communicate with us. She stood at the table and stared at us until we ordered drinks. No words when she delivered drinks. "You ordering?" was how she asked us if we were ready to place our order (and I am not exaggerating). The funny thing is that she was chatty with the other 3 tables she was waiting on. The food took a while. Our appetizer was finally delivered (mini sausage rolls) and they were a little burned. About three minutes later, the entrées were delivered. My son had a burger (she never asked how he wanted it cooked, but it was well done the way he liked). It was just ok. The fries were good. Husband had fish and chips. He liked the fries and the slaw, said the fish was just ok. I had the Sunday Roast. The green beans were the best part. Honestly, it was diner food. Meat was tough, potatoes were a bit crusted and the Yorkshire pudding did not taste fresh. The waitress disappeared and we had to wait for the table behind us to ask the bartender to find her before we saw her again. She came to our table and said "you done?". We got the check, she processed it at the table and we were done. A very disappointing $75 meal. I strongly recommend that you find someplace else to eat. read more

I have been going here for lunches and dinners on and off for years, mostly for work events or with work people since it is close to work (duh). I like this place. It is a pub style restaurant but they have vast drink list and a varied menu that not only includes the ole bangers and mash but also salads and soups, as well, as fish. I recently had the salmon burger. It is not a burger. It is a nice piece of salmon filet which is seasoned and grilled, placed on their hamburger roll which is more like a brioche, a small piece of lettuce, a slice of tomato, a dab of mustard and a slather of their tarter sauce, which is orange, which reminds me of Romanesque sauce but I am not sure if that is what it is. Anyway...It came with a side of fries which were thicker. All for about $14. Not bad. So, the salmon was really good. I asked for medium rare and got medium. What a sin to do to a piece of fish. I didn't send it back because I did not want to be THAT PERSON. There was ONE piece of lettuce that fit the size of bun. I could have done with 2 piece. And ONE slice of tomato which sort of disintegrated. They could have added another slice. The bread was WAY much for what the filling was so I took of the top half and it became a nice ratio of breading to filling. The fries were thicker cut. Better than average but nothing to write home about other than that it was NOT greasy. Not a lot of seasoning so I dipped them in ketchup, which was plentiful and already on the table. The service was GREAT. The waitress checked back with us quite a few times (not sure if it was because we were wonderful patrons or because the place was pretty empty when we got there) and made sure our water glasses were filled.
