Stumbled upon this gem while walking around and I am very glad we did. There was a long line of people waiting for seats and/or to place to go orders....that was the only sign we needed to know we hot the jackpot. The customer service was exceptional and the food was AMAZING!!!! There was one lady taking orders at that time but she cleared that line within a few minutes, addressed all customers by name and made recommendations for first timers like me. A friend and I, randomly came across this bakery after expediting my passport at the local passport agency (we came all the way from nj). It's a very chill, relaxing cafe off a cute cobblestone alleyway. The staff was warm, friendly, and informative, answering any annoying questions I had about their menu. My mouth waters thinking about it. The coffee was a little on the mild/bitter side for me, but it was fine. Very nice server, but extremely busy on the weekends. Unique, incredible dishes! We got the egg simit and the poached egg cilbir. The poached egg dish came with the most amazing sourdough bread. I don't know how they get this wonderfully crunchy exterior while maintaining a fluffy soft interior. AND THEN you dip in this what taste like a garlic cream cheese. Just perfect. I joined the the line and was glad to see they hadn't run out of their day's selection of croissants. I ordered the chocolate croissant and it was perfectly sweet and flaky. I went with my mother and ordered two chai lattes and two lemon ricotta Danishes. The line took forever to move on, and we were given our teas but they lost the order for our Danishes and we had to get in line and request them again. The staff was very uncommunicative with customers and each other and the system seemed very inefficient. Everyone seemed like it was their first day working. The table with straws and milk was unbelievably sticky for 11 in the morning. The tea and food were very good though, just not worth the frustration. The ambience was okay, but if the owners put more effort into training and getting their POS system working smoothly and less into expensive merchandise, the store could definitely benefit. read more

It is simply the best bakery on the East Coast. Periodd. The Fougasse is my go-to bread. I used to buy it from the owners' home before they set up shop in downtown Portsmouth. The service is impeccable, the prices are worth the quality. They make Somores like I've never tasted. In fact, I was never a big fan of them until my friend gave me some of hers. Addicted. The bakery is quite small, but it's a great hang-out for regulars. It has a European feel to it. They run out of food all of the time, which shows how popular they are. I appreciate that they don't waste food. I could go on and on, but whatever I write will not do justice to the bakery. Their menu keeps growing, too, which is cool. But I pick up the fougasse regularly, cut it into big slices, and freeze them to eat with soups. read more

Amazing pastries! We've tried the croissants, cinnamon rolls, and scones. They're all terrific, fresh, high-quality, and well-crafted. I'll make sure to visit whenever I'm in Portsmouth. I want to try more options including the savory offerings even if it will be difficult not to order one of the pastries. It's one of those places you want to return again and again. Another 5 star review. I've had all the bakery products at Elephantine and they are all delicious! A lemon ricotta danish is a fav! I've had all the Breads and again, fantastic! Kalamata olive, fougasse, etc! Before Covid they started to have some more 'meal' type offerings and I had a poached egg dish with heavenly sauce and thought it was the best. I've been back for coffee and baked goodies since they've reopened and I finally had the egg dish again this morning. It was even better than I remembered! Poached eggs cilbir: Two poached eggs on garlic labneh with aleppo butter & parsley gremolata. Comes with toasted sourdough. Enjoy! The friendliness of the Nadine and the whole staff makes it a warm and welcoming place and now the outdoor tables add to the fun! Take out or dine there. Love them! read more

If you're in the Portsmouth area, this gem of a bakery/cafe is a MUST MUST MUST visit! We happened to be in town for vacation, and this cafe came highly recommended on a blog I happened across. The cafe itself is located in a cute quaint little alleyway (one of those where you take a second glance and must pose for photos). As for the actual cafe, there was quite an excellent variety of unique baked goods on display; it all looked so delicious that I had a hard time deciding, but eventually settled on an Egyptian bread pudding and ham/cheese croissant. Only one word: DELICIOUS. The cherry on top? The coffee was probably the one of the best I've ever had, ever, and I'm from Seattle where we are self proclaimed coffee snobs. There's so much more I could say but TLDR: a MUST VISIT even if you just happen to be within remote driving distance! read more

This remains our favorite breakfast on the planet, literally everything is wonderful. We could be anywhere in our travels and this place can come up in conversation. It's the kind of place you crave and measure every other food experience against. If I had only one place to eat breakfast forever, it would be here. As an avid cafe dweller, Elephantine is one of the best, if not the best, that I have been to. Living in Boston, I think the 50 minute drive is more than worth it to have a meal here. The cafe itself is quaint, warm, and beautifully decorated - a reflection of The warmth Nadine and Sherif have poured into the space, not to mention their food. Tried this cute place for a lil brunch to go. Was not disappointed! We ordered the cinnamon roll & egg sandwich, the Egg Simit. Omg. Both dishes were great. The cinnamon roll is as big around as your hand is wide. It was tasty! Delicate & fabulous. The Egg Simit is something I will def try to recreate at home. It was delicious! - Jammy eggs, roasted eggplant, baba ghanoush, beet hummus & spinach on simit (turkish circular leavened bread crusted with sesame seeds). So I love La Colombe coffee and that's what they use. But they do a good job here. They also have oat milk which is slowly starting to permeate the alternative milk options at cafes everywhere. There's a seating outside and inside to hang out. They offer a bunch of sweet and savory pastries. I tried this Greek kalamata olive pastry which was interesting. Meet the magician of bread! As I walked across the small commerce street in Portsmouth, I start smelling the incredible aromas coming from this small and cute bakery. I decided to enter to have my breakfast, and I was saluted by a really nice couple that recently opened the store.
