I happen to be lucky (or unlucky) enough to live down the street from here and let me tell you this is the first place I go for cheesecake. While location is more similar to a factory outlet type store that sit-down restaurant but, they do have a small cafe next to the actual factory. It's pretty cool, as you can see the workers making actual cheesecakes and desserts. The cafe portion has some sandwiches and stuff, but the real attraction is the dessert. So I took a tour of their factory some time ago on a whim. It was a random but fun thing to do to fill up an afternoon. They show you the space where their cheesecakes are made and then raffle off 2 cheesecakes! Sadly, I didn't get one but I did get many, many free samples by paying attention to their opening presentation! You also get amply fed during the tour so it was definitely worth it. I think there should be some improvements made to the way they run the retail section. We called ahead to see if they had any Vegan cheesecake. Whoever we spoke to checked and said yes. When we drove there later that day and asked for it they said there wasn't any and "we don't really know what we get until we get it." Than they need to tell people to order online instead. They won't allow people to place things on hold either so you have to just go and see because calling proved to be pointless. The staff may need to learn how to deal with that because staring at me blankly saying you don't know who worked earlier and answering questions with "Yeah I don't know sorry" doesn't make for good business. I was visiting friends in Chicago and google said that this place is a must visit for dessert. I kid you not, I biked almost 1 hour and a half from bucktown to this place for this. When I arrived, I thought, "this cheesecake better be good, or I'll have to flip the table". Of course they surpass my expectation, trust me it was not low, with their varieties off the bat. 2 dollars for a slice of simple cheesecake?? c'mon, you CANNOT beat that. Usually I can eat 3-4 slices of any cheesecake, easily, but I barely finished 3 slices. They were dense and RICH. If I had a car, I would've gotten a couple of them pies to-go. I will definitely go back when I visit chicago again but probably not biking it again. . . . People working there was very nice to the customers, they should all get a raise. read more

Love this place! Had family visiting and took them there on a Sunday. They had free pieces of cheesecake with a choice of toppings. What a deal! And the workers were very nice. It was nice to have two kids actually be nice and friendly for even stupid questions. We went with the slightly imperfections that was cheaper than the main ones. Sorry but could not see paying over 30.00 for extra inches on my body. The other ones will do the job. Only complaint is that my description was not the cheesecake flavor inside. Really wanted the caramel apple but got chocolate silk. Looking forward to the next dock sale! This is truly an great free thing to do with your family. If I had the option to give this bakery 0 stars I would because they are a pretty bad service. In my experience with this location, I made a order and they told me that it would be prepared in 48 hours. After those 48 hours passed, I went to go pick it up in the morning and they told me that they did not have my order. They told me that someone was supposed to call me when no one did. None of the staff apologized for this incident. I came out of the bakery very frustrated and upset because I lost an hour driving just for nothing. After that I called customer service and the woman did apologize but nothing else happened. -- UPDATE: I received a call from Debbie and she was very polite and understanding of the situation. She apologized for the incident and assuring me that my next experience with this bakery will be different. That's very kind of them and it reflects the values of the company. read more

How do I love Eli's Cheesecake World? Let me count the ways: 1) The prices. Really, a 9-inch cheesecake for 7.99? You could pay that much for a slice at some restaurants. The "seconds" section is heaven to me -- the cheesecake might have a crack in it, or be slightly browner on one side. Who cares, it still tastes amazing. 2) The flavors. Usually I'm boring and go for basic chocolate chip, but they have some fun flavors that are worth trying. 3) The variety. If cheesecake is not your thing there are brownies, cakes, and delicacies of almost all types. 4) The atmosphere. Unlike many factory stores, it isn't ugly and scary. There are friendly people working there who like to help you. As a bonus there is a quaint cafe where you can get a meal or just a nosh. The centerpiece is the Cheesecake Cow from Cows on Parade. In the summer there is a farmers market on Thursdays. 5) All their products are certified Kosher. Not a big deal to me under usual circumstances, but if I'm coordinating an event at my temple I can get sweets here and save lots of time and money. Dang, now I'm craving cheesecake. Fortunately, I have some in the freezer....mmmm. read more

Yesterday was my second time stopping by the cafe- if I take a detour on my way home, I can BARELY make it there before they close at 6pm. Yesterday however I was caught in terrible traffic so I called and asked if they would stay open an extra 5 minutes for me (clearly I don't take cheesecake lightly), and the very nice lady I spoke to did! I showed up at 6:04 and they didn't even seem annoyed (though I did hustle to get my stuff and get out). I like cheesecake, but Eli's is something else entirely. It is so creamy and delicious. Even the plain (I bought a WHOLE PLAIN cheesecake to keep in the freezer... you know... for emergencies...) is so so so good. I have tried a few flavors so far and they are all out of this world. Blackberry sour cream, the oreo cheesecake, and salted caramel- all winners. Anyway I can't believe I've lived in Chicago almost 6 years and only recently discovered this gem. Maybe one day I'll take the tour but for now I'm happy dropping by at 5:55pm and buying a bunch of cheesecake to take home and devour. Side note- the prices are GREAT. A slice of plain is $2. $2! The three stars are for the cheese cake I bought, besides that your outlet needs work in the customer service area. The girl at the register is rude and needs to remember that the customer is who pays your salary. She barely gave me eye contact and wouldn't move three feet to her right to assist me by the pastry section. The girl who was out by the freezer sections was of very little help as I got very little attention as others had questions for her as well. I didn't get what I wanted and had to settle for less than I wanted to buy at what seemed to be about the same price I would have paid for a small strawberry cheesecake is what I wanted. So I returned for a mid-summer's al fresco lunch. Met a friend from the 'burbs there since it was quite a good equi-distant rendezvous spot. We both had sandwiches. They have a nice, varied sandwich and salad menu. They even have a cuban sandwich, but not on this occasion, since they were out of ham. I ordered the Reuben, which was really quite good. I probably could have passed on the potato chips which looked like the last batch of crumbs from the bottom of the bag that your little brother left in the bag, instead of just finshing them. My friend Steve had the Turkey club which was served on a very fresh large white sub-type roll instead of in the usual wedges. He said it was OK but needed more mayo. I made the same observation about the Reuben-a little dry, could of used of some dressing or a dip. But the sandwiches,which are around $6.75 come with a free serving of dessert! So you get to select a pastry or a piece of the basic cheesecakes-such a deal! Now if I ever get around to the lists here, this one goes on the where-to-buy-dessert-when-you-are-on-the-dessert committee-for-the-potluck list. While I am a cook, I am not a pastry chef, so I always but a dessert when requested to bring one to a dinner party or pot luck. Besides the cheesecakes (again, as low as $7-8.00 a piece), they have beautiful small cakes, pastries and cookies, which are half the price of some of the neighborhood specialty bakeries such as Sel Marie in Lincoln Square. So, to me, its worth the 20-minute drive out here to find something fun, inexpensive AND delicious to bring as a guest gift. They also carry great little house gifts like Belgian chocolate,and Egyptian vanilla, when you're out to impress a friend who cooks with things exotic. So make a little road trip out here one fine summer day. You AND your wallet won't regret it. read more

Whenever I need to bring a dessert for an event (whether I am invited to someone's home for dinner, a Summer time bar-b-que or going with a large group to Ravinia) this is my ultimate destination stop for the best dessert ever! The flavors here are versatile. You are bound to find something that you and your friends will like (from dark chocolate ganache to white chocolate raspberry to strawberry to red velvet to caramel praline to apple crunch to oreo cookie crunch). The list goes on and on and on......their quality is excellent. They have a small bakery section and everything is made fresh daily. Cheesecakes are in freezers. Look for their "buy one and get one free" sales which are really sweet bargains. Also, their "dock sales" are off the hook insanely good! If you want to make-up your own cheesecake, purchase the "Sweet Imperfections" plain cheesecake. Add your own fresh fruit to the top of the plain cheesecake. Their red velvet cupcakes usually sell out quickly, so if you like red velvet it is a must-try. In fact, I like these sooooooo much better than "More" cupcakes or "Sprinkles" cupcakes (plus, they cost a lot less). Sweet! During the Fall, they have Pumpkin cheesecake, which is OMFG, off the hook outstanding. During the month of February they sell heart-shaped cheesecakes (small and large sizes). I usually go during February for this reason. You can buy them after 2/14 for a lot less (sometimes they offer buy one, get one free). They also serve up sandwiches, soup and beverages, but I've never had lunch here. The inside looks like a loft-style contemporary decor with hard wood floors. There is a huge picture, as you enter, to your left with a huge Birthday Cheesecake featuring President Clinton and Hillary. This is in an odd location of the City, but they got a sweet deal on the location which is why they are where they are. They offer factory "tours" for groups (not free though) for people who may be interested in seeing how these desserts are made. They sometimes have "free" samples for tasting not only when the tour is over but also inside their store (even if you are not part of the tour you can part-take in the sample tasting). The people who work here are friendly, helpful and always happy to answer questions. This is their "outlet" store, so if you have purchased Eli's Cheesecakes at Jewel or any other grocery store, get your ass over to this place and pay 50% less! This is one of my guilty pleasures, but since I am an avid runner, I burn off the calories the very next day. Their "Sweet Imperfections" are the same quality ingredients that their non "Sweet Imperfections" contains. The only difference is that there may be a thin crack in the "Sweet Imperfection" or it may not have met their stringent Quality Assurance and Quality Control inspections, and they cannot sell it to their clients. Therefore, they sell it to the public, which is a win-win for the public, since the price is very, very reasonable. read more

Great day for family fun day. This the second one that I have attended and was better than last. They held a classic car show that was amazing. More cars than I have ever seen. The entry fee was $12 which got donated to a local charity and each entry was given a cheesecake voucher. Plenty of live entertainment, games and contest. There was food being sold as well. They also had specials for cheesecake purchases that are worth the trip for the cheesecake lovers like myself. read more

Took our out of town relatives here for the tour and were disappointed to find out they stopped doing it about a year ago. Never to worry, we were offered the slideshow presentation with raffle. The slideshow was interesting-explaining the history of the company and its importance for Chicago. We even got to sample a few new cheesecake flavors. Don't be deceived by the low price, quality is very good. If interested in factory tour to see how Cheesecakes are made, I went on 1/17 and they said they don't do tours anymore. Maybe because of food safety, so probably a good move. Order a cheesecake ahead of time or go there and choose between the multitude of extremely fresh treats. They are unable to sell any cheesecake with even the most minor imperfection (Mr. Cheesecake, I'll love you even with the small crack in your crust or the slightest tilt in your top) so you can get it here for WAY cheap. The tour is a lot of fun. Nice "workout" before diving into the free cheesecake at the end. 3 bucks. Call ahead to ensure tours are going on before you show up. You ll see the whole process from the making of the crust to the final decorations. mmm. Cute outdoor area to sit on a spring day. Do NOT order on line, they lost my order, they charged my credit card then they never acknowledged that I called (twice) leaving 2 voicemails or that I had sent an email regarding my order. They Never even acknowledged that there was a problem! They offered a free cake but our party was last week and WTF would we need the cake for now? I've refused the credit card charges. I was finally able to speak with a human there--but I had to call 3 times today (1-800-ELI-CAKE) before the phone was even answered!!! Horrible experience!
