I can't believe I haven't been inside to eat, but I've had their take out. Tonight that changed when I went to a dinner party in the back. Eliza's is so delicious and the people who work there are straight up there to make your meal wonderful and memorable. There were 24 of us so a lot of mouths to feed. Food kept coming from the moment we all sat down. Tea was poured and refilled. Water poured and pitchers on the table to refill. We started with crab Rangoon and drums of heaven chicken. Then on to Peking duck taco things. The server found out I don't eat meat so brought me a giant platter of fried rice and another platter of chow mein. Then there was honey walnut shrimp, green beans with tofu, chicken with vegetables and shrimp, and then there was beef. I definitely would go again and bring a group. I'd also have take out again. Here's the deal, the staff hover and will be ready to clear your plate in 5 seconds and rush you out the door ASAP even if the place is empty, but the food is absolutely amazing. The Mongolian beef, the mushu pork, the chow mein, fried rice, pot stickers- all absolutely delicious. It's hands down the best and will go back a million times. You have to remind them you're not in a hurry and just be firm when you don't want your plates cleared yet, but the food is worth it even if it isn't this "amazing" dining experience. read more

I have reviewed this neighborhood restaurant before as we order take out once a month. Today we decided to eat in... For apps we had the Haukaw and Siomai Combination. Followed by the Crab Rangoon. Both were tasty, freshly steamed and met our expectation. Next we had Mandarin Eggplant. This is our all time fave. It tastes even better when you eat at the restaurant! We ordered Eliza's Spicy Chicken. The were decorative Veggie that were crisply sautéed along the sides. Very good and one of our faves. Lastly, we had some Mushroom Chow Fun...delish! All the dishes were so much better as dine-in! But take out is not bad despite the time in the container. A neighborhood must! read more

Michael Bauer doesn't go here weekly for nothing! Went here for Chinese new year w two buds. Very pleasantly surprised- and quite frankly- we wondered why we haven't been here before?! The style of food is cleanly presented, light in fat and not too greasy -- and just very well executed. The duck was very tender on inside and the skin was very crispy. Yes there was more meat than bone!! - even the potsticker appi- a typical dish that doesn't leave impressions- was Better than good here - like- almost handmade ..?! Fabulous neighborhood Chinese food which is saying something in SF! Eggplant dish and moo shu excellent.

Eliza's spicy eggplant is excellent. There was a lot more than just eggplant in there which surprised me as I didn't read the menu very closely () but it was tasty! Eliza's chow mein was also really tasty. The fried rice was a little wet and intensely seasoned for my taste but not the worst ever. The green beans were solid. Compared to some of the other Chinese takeout spots I felt the value for the price was a little less, slightly smaller portions and not necessarily a higher quality. If you are craving Hunan style Chinese food with a California twist, give this family owned restaurant a try! For vegetarians, they have plenty of options here and will customize dishes as well. We started coming to Eliza's during the pandemic and quickly became addicted to their portobello shrimp bok choy dish. If you like mushroom/truffle flavor, the sauce in that dish has plenty of it. The portobello mushroom is sliced thinly and has a great texture and reminds my fiancé of abalone. Tonight we came here to dine in for the first time. They were pretty busy on a Saturday night, we waited 5 minutes to be seated. The interior design is interesting, it has an eclectic mix of modern art and traditional golden Chinese religious idols (Buddhist I think?). Overall, flavors of all our dishes were on point, service was attentive, we'll definitely come back to dine in soon. Garlic eggplant appetizer- very flavorful, garlic adds a nice crunch, generous portion of garlic. Pairs well with the sweeter soy sauce marinade. Nicely grilled. Hot and sour soup (we got it vegetarian)- one of our favorite dishes of the meal and hit the spot on a cold night. Honey walnut prawn- tasty, shrimps are on the smaller side and a bit more breading than I prefer. Portobello and bok choy (we got it customized without shrimp)- our favorite dish, never disappoints. The food here is by far the worst food I've had in San Francisco. I think you can hardly call this food let alone Chinese food. Everything is bland and poorly executed. I had this restaurant while they were catering for a work meeting (I have had to endure this place twice). 9/10 of my coworkers also hate this restaurant. There was a soup that was ordered that tasted like what I imagine baby vomit to taste like. Their food is so extremely nauseating I cannot believe they are in business. Their honey walnut shrimp is covered in mayonnaise which is a choice, for sure. I have also heard a story about there being pieces of plastic fork in their food that resulted in a trip to the ER. The plastic fork had cut all the way going down his esophagus. I worked in restaurants for years before working in a corporate job and am disgusted and appalled that a plastic fork was able to get into the food and be served to customers. I can only imagine how a plastic fork would get into the serving trays of food. Truly, go anywhere else. Save your money, it's not worth the ER trip or the nausea. read more

Don't come here unless you want to be disappointed or the business changes their attitude. Used to come here over 10yrs ago and thought to give them a try again. So I decided to take some friends and share the great experience I had with them. It was a huge let down. We went for dinner and ordered a few dishes. The service was lacking almost like the staff didn't care to continue running the business anymore or something. The food was horrible, tasted nothing like Asian or Hunan food. Some of it even tasted like that harsh chemical cleaners from poor sanitary conditions and they didn't care to cover the food when they were cleaning. Good luck if you want to try this place. I first dined here 2 decades ago. The ambiance remains clean and inviting but that is where the warmth both begins and ends. The women "greeting you" are icy cold and appear to be non native speaking. Although the restaurant was near empty, when I asked for a window seat I was told to sit where I was and then 10 minutes later someone came over and told me it was o.k. to move. Again, no reason for not making me feel welcome. But I was hungry andd so ordered simple Mu Shu pancakes and shrimp dumplings. I was not offered hot tea but was brought a glasss of ice water when the outside temperature was low 50's. The two dishes were not brought at the same time. The pancake filling looked grey and unappetizing when it could have had cruncy spouts and tasty vegetables. Bland but for the traditional sauce. The dumplings were so bland and boring that compared with all of the new dumpling places popping up all over the citty this was the clear loser. Again, the sauces were fine but could not camoflague the miserable taste. I told the waitress and asked if I could return them for an egg roll but she misunderstood so I cancelled egg roll, asked for the manager. Instead of apologizing and removing the dumplings from the order he said he asked the cook and they said the food was fine. I had planned to take out the pancakes but the defensive manager suggested I leave them since I didn't appreciate the food. Imagine that, a manager telling you to leave behind the food you paid for ? These folks are cluelesss. This is NOT a place to dine for warmth or quality food. They are arrogant for no reason. This place should have closed at the time of the pandemic. I am apparently on a nostalgia tour of SF restaurants. I used to come here all of the time, like 15 years ago. This will set some context for you. The food here is good, very good in some cases. I am going to go ahead and recommend you get take out for reasons I will explain in a minute. First the food- It is hunan/mandarin style Chinese. I always get vegetarian mu shu. On my last visit it was as good as I remembered. The portion size has shrunk but as my husband noted when we got the bill, it was our first meal under $100 in a long time. We also got hot and sour soup, chicken with cashews and mongolian beef. The food was hot, fresh and everyone enjoyed it. You got the feeling everyone there was a regular. They all greeted the owner (I presume) familiarly and seemed to have established their regular order. A very neighborhood kind of place. I wish we had gotten take out because the restaurant was cold AF. I think it was even colder than it was outside. We did not take our coats off the entire time. There was a space heater behind us but it didn't help much. The decor is very dated (like it would have been very cutting edge in the 90s) and kind of run down. It made me a little sad because this is obviously someone's business and they made it through the pandemic but maybe just barely. Maybe I'm eager with the five stars since I've only been there twice but here's why. On my first visit, the host made a face when I made my vegetarian selection. Is it a bad dish, I asked. Of course not! He said, but better for sharing. You might want something more interesting as a stand-alone. He suggested a kung pao tofu. Boy was I glad!
