Very disappointing mapo tofu, after getting a fair few recs for it, I was excited to try it out, but it was just a salty bean tofu curry. There was no málà at all (numb) and the portion was also smaller than the same dish at a lot of other sichuan restaurants across SF. It gets worse, the rice was not well made and almost uncooked. Ordered take out from here. The combination chow mein was really good , decent portions and they did not skimp on the proteins. The shrimp were good and the beef slices were legit, not the questionable bits you sometimes get at other spots. The hot and sour soup was pretty tasty as well. At first, I was thrown off by the broccoli in it, but it surprisingly still had a fresh crunch and ended up being a pleasant addition. The spring rolls were meh, crispy outside but just an indistinguishable mush mixture in the middle. I was excited when Lazy Susan finally offered a tofu version of the Chinese Chicken Salad but the excitement wasn't supported by the results. The salad has everything it should have but there's no flavor alchemy and amounts to a bunch of crunchy dissatisfying bites. Sadly I have to take another star away because when we ordered it to go, it was packaged in six (literally six) different containers. She found a piece of hair and a piece of metal from a sponge or something in her food. The restaurant was empty and we went for a walk at Goodwill for 10 minutes since they said it will take that long. When we got back there were two customers leaving with take out. I've been waiting to try Lazy Susan and it didn't disappoint. We got the pot stickers, general Tsos chicken, and the shrimp lo mein. Overall food was exactly what I was expecting - a flavorful less greasy take on American Chinese. The potstickers were excellent. The general tsos was perfectly crunchy (I was nervous bc of GF)! Slight letdown from the "side of broccoli" that was just 3 pieces. The chow mein was perfect with large shrimp. Not pictured - we got the hot and sour soup and wonton soup. I really loved the hot and sour soup, it didn't have the goopy cornstarch texture like most places. I also enjoyed the wonton, but my fiancée wasn't used to the flavor (they use what I'm guessing is 5 spice). Overall would definitely have again - delivery was fast and we'll packaged. Being in Hayes Valley and having Impossible™ meat, it screams gentrified Chinese food but can't knock it until you try it. I've had the chef's food before at Fort Point (hello, sichuan hummus!) so it really piqued my interest to try Lazy Susan. During COVID, Lazy Susan is open for takeout and delivery (via Toast/DoorDash). Order directly through their website. Lazy Susan opened in the same location as B-side at the SF Jazz Center. I saw them open on one of my walks in the area and wanted to try them out. If you can imagine the Hayes Valley version of the quintessential American Chinese restaurant, this would be it - it's a "not so greasy" version of the American Chinese food that we have all had. It's a take-out only operation that's open for Wednesday through Sunday dinner. I had the chicken wings and the pepper steak and both were really good. The entrees are reasonably priced though you have to buy the rice separately. With tax and tip, this was $29. Definitely worth a try when you are in the area or craving some American Chinese food. read more

Honestly, it might not be the most "authentic" place. But as someone that grew up on a lot of "Americanized Chinese" food, this place scratches a very specific itch that most of less Americanized places don't really scratch. I've been in a couple of times both eating in and take out and while a little bit more pricy then the steam table food of my childhood always is delicious and very fresh (they make everything fresh and don't have a steam table) and portion sizes are definitely on the generous side. The service has been very pleasant and fast when eating in and it's very clean and has a great vibe inside. I guess the only downside is that the parking situation kinda sucks but it's also at west portal so transit has a ton of connections. read more

General Tso Chicken was doughy and lacked flavor. Chow mein was mediocre and the garlic broccoli was brown, soggy, and unappetizing. Lazy Susan is a unique take on quintessential Chinese food. The chow mein had a nice spice profile I've never had before and the chicken was wonderfully crispy. The place is also a nice mix of casual and nice. You just order at the counter and easily get take out or you can sit in their nice seating area with lazy susans of course. This is probably the most expensive Chinese place I've ever been to though and the food though good will certainly not blow you away. read more

They need to stress that this is "Americanized Chinese," Or "An American interpretation on Chinese Food." Some people come here for nostalgia (if this is what is nostalgic for you). I get that. But nostalgia combined with bad food should NOT be getting you a mention in the New York Times. For me, there was some nostalgia. It brought back flashbacks to the late 90s; specifically the trauma of having to eat at a university cafeteria managed by Aramark that claimed to make "fresh and authentic Chinese food." If you're from the old country, this is not the place for you. You should only go here if you're trying to collect data for a sociology paper on the butchering of Asian cuisine for the American palette. With regards to the food. One thing we know how to do an Asia, is CLEAN our rice from foreign elements like pebbles and grit. Yes, we wash our rice before cooking it. I didn't appreciate finding what looked to be a small stone in the very bland fried rice (see image). You can imagine how relieved I am I didn't chip any teeth on that. No good Asian mother would allow their child to get away with leaving rocks and pebbles in the rice. The punishment for such crime would be 100 lashes of the feather duster. Wasn't too fond of that frozen vegetable taste in the corn carrot and peas in the fried rice (or that little bit of ice that was still on the corn). As for the potstickers. Bland. No seasoning in the filling. Only thing I can taste what is the oil that they were pan fried in. Only reason why I went in here; I was starving. Usually they are very good today their * General Tao Chicken was very salty * Hot and Sour Soup was odd, just took a sip and dumped * XO Fried Rice (beef and shrimp) was tasty and good Lazy Susan has a good loyalty program where I earned about $10, which covers the delivery that took about 50 minutes (1h 15m from order). ( DoorDash delivers for Toast and has sometimes given my order to the homeless people in the bus stop (happened twice). DoorDash never reimburses me I just order the same thing again, because it's not Lazy Susan's fault and I am still hungry and someone got to eat, Not that I'm a Billion Dollar company feeding the poor with the poor's money. Door Dash I try not to order from them, but they seem to be winning more and more restaurants with that type of service under other names. 4.5 stars A "Lazy Susan" refers to the spinning tray placed in the center of tables in many Chinese restaurants to help diners reach the dishes they want. It's also an apt name for this Chinese-American restaurant that does a modern take on classically inauthentic dishes. For lunch, the Lazy Plate (what a creative name!) came with a choice of entree, side, and a crispy vegetable spring roll. My pick was the Impossible Mapo Tofu, a dish of silken Hodo tofu cubes in a mapo sauce made with ground Impossible meat and Sichuan peppercorns. The sauce had a balanced spicy and savory flavor with a hit of umami from the fermented bean paste (doubanjiang), and the tofu mixture went nicely with the peppery veggie fried rice laced with scrambled egg, peas, carrots, and corn. I also tried the General Tso's chicken, made of deep-fried chicken chunks tossed in a sweet, savory, tangy sauce and topped with sesame seeds and broccoli. One of the homemade condiments I ordered on the side was the Umami Crunch, made of garlic, fermented black bean, and mushroom powder, which added a nice texture and flavor to the dishes. As to be expected for Chinese-American food, everything was packaged in take-out containers (along with packets of Sriracha and Chinese hot mustard), and the classic fortune cookie topped off the meal! It's so exciting seeing a new restaurant start up during this pandemic! Overall Lazy Susan has wonderful Chinese-American food and I really like the design style of their website/ordering/packaging; its simple and easy, and I hope they eventually have indoor dining! The food tasted great, but I wouldn't say it's the best Chinese I've had in SF. The General Tso's chicken was really tasty, but it wasn't spicy at all. It also only came with broccoli, and I wish it came with a side of rice instead of having to pay extra. I also tried the chicken fried rice, which had more seasoning/flavor than most places. I was a big fan. The portions are decent sized, and the prices are reasonable for SF. I'm glad to have this option so close to where I live, and I'll be back if I'm craving Chinese food! This review is a unique and personal one for me. I'm starting it before I have eaten the food because as a native San Franciscan I was stunned when I first saw the new shop at the Jazz Center. You see, Lazy Susan was the name of my mother's store that she had for 30 years and even had a cafe! In fact the store became so popular that some copycat Japanese entrepreneurs copied it and used the name to create stores in Japan and New York. So for those longtime San Franciscans, this restaurant is unrelated! Now I read that SF's Luke Tsai that they want this to be the Domino's of Chinese Food. Very interesting concept for a former Mr. Jiu protege. Basically this upscale chef sponsored by the same people who create Atelier Crenn are creating a high volume standard take out version of Panda Express? Well I will give them 5 stars for concept. I also think they are brave for making the attempt in San Francisco, a city with 40% Asians and tons of places to eat. That said, the food was good, and a little expensive compared to what I could get from more authentic Chinese take out in SF. To me this was what I call Americanized Chinese Food for the masses. GF goodness! I have Hashimoto's so gluten is a no go. I'm not celiac so cross contamination is not a concern for me. I can't speak to that for those folks. Since going GF in 2016 I've missed Chinese American food but not anymore with Lazy Susan. The orange chicken is my go to. It's so fresh and bright tasting. I absolutely love it with its fresh bursts of orange. When I lived in SF I ordered very frequently. Unfortunately I moved a year ago and Lazy Susan and that orange chicken is something I still dream of. I still work in SF so I ask our office to order from them for our weekly lunch every now and then just so I can get a taste.
