Both of us connoisseurs of macaroons, Ellie's has a great line up that met our wedding theme of showcasing the flavors of the season, in this case between Summer and Autumn, as well as that of Rhode Island. Able to produce the macaroons in our wedding colors plus provide recyclable, firm-plastic packaging that would allow our far-away guests to easily transport the macaroons home, our wedding favors turned out to be a big hit such that the favors left on our sweet-heart wedding table were swiped. We had to ask some of our local guests to return one to two of extras that they had taken just to get a taste of the sweetness that Ellie's makes. My husband and I had lunch at Ellies today and chose outdoor seating. The sandwich I had (pork belly with a hot pepper marmalade) was fine. My problem was with outdoor ambiance/service. This is an order-at-the-counter place so payment plus tip (20% in our case - our choice) happens first after standing in line at a counter to order. Fine so far. At least our order would be delivered to the table. My issue is that, at least for folks who choose to sit outside, once food is delivered the rest is up to you. Just outside the main entrance to this popular restaurant is a tub for dirty dishes and a separate open plastic-lined trash bin for garbage. Diners are expected not only to bus their tables, but to scrape off the garbage into a bucket first. Yuck! I don't like doing it myself and I don't like watching fellow diners do it while I'm eating three feet away either. That's not why I go to a restaurant and though some places have tray return areas where you can dump tray contents into a closed trash can, I've never seen anything like this. I should have paid more attention on the way in. Enough to sour me on the restaurant for sure! read more

My boyfriend and I came here for breakfast while staying in the area. The menu is very limited, so we both got the egg sandwiches with tomato jam. The jam wasn't too sweet, but our eggs were overcooked with hard yolks. I think $6 was steep for one egg with cheddar on an English muffin. The price skyrocketed to $8.50 just to add a small sausage patty to one of them. I don't see what the fuss is about on this one. My boyfriend also had to request his black coffee three times before someone would bring it to him, and he was nearly done with his food by the time he got it. It wasn't crowded, so I don't know why it took so long to pour coffee in a cup. The building and interior are pretty, but I think it's overpriced for what you get. read more

It was so cute in here and the staff was comprised of some of the sweetest people I've ever met. I can't give a single complaint about that. Although, I got the breakfast sandwich with bacon and a brown butter pecan latte (a large is 16oz) and paid 17.50$. That's insane to me especially when the sandwich was so small and I didn't eat the top half of the english muffin because of how dry it was. The contents were good but one small egg, a single mini slice and a teaspoon of tomato jam isn't worth 8$. I would much rather get a breakfast sandwich somewhere else. BUT the latte was amazing. Still overpriced but the seasonal brown butter pecan latte was delish!! I think I maybe got the wrong item, their pastries are probably where it's at. No macaroons compare to laduree or Angelique but this place comes close. They have great seasonal flavors. Like Kentucky pie. Apple cider. Chocolate peppermint. A bit flakey at times but always a good amount of chew. The cream piped into each is lightly sweetened and gives a nice consistency to each bite (especially if you end up with a slightly overBaked one). Table seating outside is nice, especially if you have a 3+ group or more and want to face each other while eating (tabling inside is mostly bar-like seating against the wall and window). Venue is a bit on the small side so finding a seat is often a challenge, and trying to order with those waiting for their orders to come out makes for a tight squeeze at the entrance and around the side of the counter. A bit on the pricey side, you'll pay about $24 for a dozen macarons, but there is definite novelty in the flavors: irish cream, lavender, matcha, etc. Nice place to snag a small gift with cute and local flare. Well, well, well - I am in Providence for a few days and staying at a hotel downtown. Most places to eat around here are carry out or eat outside. We decided to order through Grubhub. I ordered a kale salad with grilled chicken. My son ordered the pork belly sandwich with fries. The total came to $33.48. The salad was one of the worse, I've ever had. Even though I got the dressing on the side, it was quite dry after mixing in the dressing. The salad greens had lots of thick stems, some fried chickpeas that tasted like they came out of a box. There were a few ribbons of carrot slivers and about five thin fingers of grilled chicken. The greens were a bit gritty. I am sure because of one less wash. Even though I asked for utensils to eat the salad, none were included. My son claimed the pork belly sandwich would have been better if if had more than one slice of PB. It had a lot of other stuff but scarce of PB. The fries were very soft, warm and just ok. All in all, this was a bad choice for us. This cute bakery/cafe/coffee shop is a quick pit stop location, if you simply want to grab some baked goods, a cup of coffee or a bag of coffee. I walked in because the macaroons called my name. We had the Irish coffee and because it was St. Patrick's day we got one for free. We also got the coconut leche and matcha red bean. The macaroons were slightly chewy but good. The best was the Irish coffee. For the matcha red bean, I could hardly taste the matcha or the red bean. The coconut had shavings of coconut in it which gave it texture. The crown jewel is the wooden carved hen in front of it. Looks friendly and welcoming. read more

I wish I could give more than 5 stars! I am so happy someone working at a neighboring restaurant (Res, which was quite good) suggested this as among the two best spots for breakfast in Providence. It was super cute in terms of decor in there, and everyone was nice and patient with my out-of-town mother and myself. The egg sandwich is expletive amazing. I ordered a second with bacon just to try it after my first. The greens on the side were yummy and the whole meal just felt like it was carefully prepared with fresh and wholesome ingredients. The coffee and the Aperol were not good, both were very bitter. The prices are pretty high for what we got. I'd previously known Ellie's as a great place to pick up little sweet treats, but during my last visit I realized it's also a great place for a relatively wholesome (but still indulgent) lunch. They have a great seasonal grilled cheese special, as well as lots of other sandwiches including pork belly and a veggie butternut squash. If you're not feeling a sando, they offer seasonal soups and salads as well. There's not a ton of seating but it's a perfect space if you just want to grab a bite by yourself or with one more person... if the weather's nice there are a couple of outdoor tables. We enjoyed dinner before a show at PPAC. Our daughter loved the burger, truffle fries, and ice cream sandwich and we loved the salad, scallop and trout entrees, and pistachio cake. Cute, charming and convenient - Ellie's Bakery is certainly a welcome addition to the cafe roster here in Providence. The fact that this spot reminds me (and many others, apparently) of Parisian cafes makes it all the more enticing! While there is only minimal counter seating inside, their petite sidewalk tables are a good option on a sunny day (or any day that it isn't raining, for that matter). As a tea drinker, I thoroughly appreciated their copious options including several black and herbal infusions. They have French-style pre-made sandwiches, of which the heirloom tomato and mozzarella was quite delicious and filling. The bread is fresh-baked and has that nice rustic, powdery, floury crust that tastes soooooo good. Another treat worth trying? The fig and goat cheese tart - just a few bites, but so well thought-out and prepared that a few bites are the perfect accompaniment to a cup of mint tea. The staff is wonderful, too - in fact, their barista is one of the better I've come across, and was totally impressed when she re-pulled the espresso when the original wasn't to her satisfaction. This adorable locally grown Parisian inspired bakery has won me over. The hustle and bustle of downtown life slows down just a tad when entering Ellie's quaint little bakery. The service are always pleasant, polite and delicately meticulous when retrieving or making your order. They pride themselves on their attention to details and I love that. I love finding a place to unwind where you can enjoy a warm latte and favored sweet item. For me, relaxing with two of their famous french macaroons and their [hot] green tea latte w/vanilla almond milk. Just makes my whole day that much brighter. A combo like that simply cannot be found in any Starbucks or commercial coffee spot. Coming here is a serious novelty and treat for me. My only wish is that the bakery was roomier and could accommodate more than eight people at a time sitting in.
