We were in Providence for 4 days for a professional conference. We stopped at Ellie's a few times during our visit and thought the food and coffee were really good. However, on our last visit, we had an unpleasant experience. My husband had finished his meal, but I was still finishing up my coffee and food when an employee came up and told us we had to leave as they needed our table for other customers. We found this very confusing as the patrons at the table just next to us had been there longer than we had, and they were also finished with their meal. I really wanted to like this adorable Downcity spot, but the food didn't quite live up to my expectations! I had the "sugar pumpkin" sandwich with poached pears, brie, arugula, and pumpkin butter on pumpernickel. This combination of flavors sounds like it would be great, but it just wasn't working for me! When I tasted the bread by itself it was deliciously nutty, but all together the sandwich tasted muddy and bland. All their lunch sandwiches are about $9, too, which made me wish I had just gotten toast! :( I also had a lime frosted sugar cookie. It was yummy--the lime frosting was super tangy and a unique addition! However, the cookie itself was a bit overbaked on the edges and underbaked in the middle, which made me think I could have made it at home. Considering how professional their cakes and macarons looked, I was expecting a little more technical skill with the cookie! Because the staff was really nice and the interior is so cozy, I may still come back here when I feel like treating myself. It's been awhile since I've been here, but my last review was based on their desserts and iced coffee. This review is strictly on their hot coffee, which we had the next morning. I was super excited about going back since we had such a great experience the previous day. Lucus and I have such a hard time finding good espresso, but we figured it was a win since the iced Almond Joy we had before was amazing. I don't know what happens to espresso when it's served hot versus served cold, but the hot one (mocha) we had the next day was just okay. Even stirring it to get the chocolate up off the bottom didn't help amp up the sweetness. We left a little bummed, especially because we were headed to Connecticut and could have really used a nice hot coffee on the drive. However, we did get a pastry and it was very yummy. If I lived in Providence, I know I would be back to Ellie's simply because I loved the shop. So cute in there, it's hard not to fall in love. Wouldn't hesitate a second to order another iced coffee. And I would probably give their hot coffees another try as well. I believe in second chances. read more

Hmm, not fancy, not grubby, just kind of a relaxed casual mode. Ok cool... then the food comes. Well, this is good. For the five of us dining there was nary a complaint and a lot of praise. The food concepts are simple and delicious. I had a pork belly sandwich, roasted pork belly slabs on a ciabatta with broccoli rabe and a marmalade to off set the bitterness of the rabe. In all the orders from our group there was a balance in the flavored fillings and the bread type that contained them. There is a wine list, red, white or rose. I went with the red and it was a quite drinkable pinot noir. As the restaurant is also a bakery, there is a selection of sweets. I was in need of a quick breakfast sandwich without having to submit my stomach to corporate America's Mc/DD Anything. I stopped in at this small, quaint French-inspired bakery and instantly felt wrapped up in the warm & coziness of it. Although they have many pastries (all looked so tempting), their breakfast menu is limited. I ordered their $5 signature sandwich to go (Blackbird Farm egg, cheddar, savory tomato jam on a house-made English Muffin). I decided not to add bacon or sausage for the additional $1, but I'm glad to know I have that option. This is the best breakfast sandwich I've ever tasted - savory & sweet simultaneously. I couldn't put it down long enough to snap a photo; it was THAT good. My only complaint is that the price of their macarons isn't displayed where the product is. I ordered 2 tiny macarons (pistachio & chocolate peanut butter) for my sister. My breakfast total suddenly jumped from $5 to $10. A little warning would have been nice. We decided to do a pretty low-key Valentine's Day recently and made an afternoon outing to get pastries from Ellie's, and they were totally divine. The service was also very attentive, and as usual, the bakery was charmingly decorated. We decided to mainly get treats to bring home, but also try a couple things while we were there. My bf chose two macarons (scrumptious, as usual), and I opted for a slice of the banana bread with walnut crumble topping. I seriously have no clue how they make such amazing banana bread. It was the best I've ever had - dark and intensely buttery, with mini semisweet chocolate chips distributed throughout. (I actually just tried to replicate the banana bread myself last night, and of course it is not even close to Ellie's!) The crunchy walnut topping really hit the spot as well - the walnuts were roasted perfectly. To go, we also ordered a little slice of the beautiful opera cake and a pair of the equally gorgeous blood orange pistachio eclairs. They were the kind of pastries that are just so visually stunning that you instinctively slow down to enjoy them. The opera cake was decorated on top with meticulously pressed key and heart shapes with gold leaf, and the eclairs were dusted with bright green pistachio crumbles. All in all, it's true that our Valentine's Day was still low-key, with some pastries brought home, but there was nothing low-key about these pastries. They were totally gorgeous and decadent, and very special. Ellie's is the perfect place to go in Providence if you are looking for desserts with that special thoughtful touch! read more

Such a sweet and charming place. I like the white subway tiles and huge windows there! The bakery case was lovely and had several tempting items but I settled on a Kouign Amann and had a lavender latte. As others have noted, don't miss the small boards that list sandwiches, as most of the pastries are sweet. I had wonderful plain yogurt with a tiny but flavorful packet of granola. It was a very reasonable breakfast size and meant I could also have I small pastry too. The small soft pretzel was great! The sweet things looked divine and I wanted to try each one. Lucky for me, a few samples were available by the register. This place is pricey, so buyer beware. You line up to order then look for a table inside or outside yourself. Here's the catch, you get white linen napkin with fork & knife while you self help yourself to tables. Talk about weirdness. Since the place is at the corner, and quite cute interior, the place got a lot of students, and business crowds. That's a good sign the food must be very good right? WRONG. While my Croque Monsieur is good, my partner's ham and egg croissant sandwich was terrible to say the least. He asked for the two eggs over easy and it was cooked over hard. There' jam inside your ham and egg croissant sandwich which is kinda of weird tasting in my partner's opinion. We ordered 2 large latte, and cappuccino. When we picked them up, we were looking at the cups, and were wondering if it's small. We were told it's large. I think it's either 10 oz? Or 12 oz? LMAO, oh the bill comes to almost $50 before tip. This review is strictly for the French macarons! I've had this bakery on my list for quite a while and finally had a chance to stop by! I tried the signature of pistachio, chocolate & peanut butter, and lemon lavender, along with a few seasonal ones that consist of I believe an apple cider and some sort of squash one. At first, I tried the apple one, and the consistency was off. It was much more chewier than it should be. Flavor was spot on though. Since I was still full from dinner, I stopped there...somewhat disappointed. When I got home, my curiosity got the best of me. I ended up cutting them all in half and tried each one! All the others were perfect in taste and texture with the pistachio and lemon lavender being my favorite two! Can't wait to try different flavors! $2 a piece is quite reasonable and it was perfectly packaged. It did take awhile for my sandwich to come out, even though they use an iron to flatten and warm it up. The counter staff also brought your order where you sat (either on the window counter or the 3/4 small tables). At the end when you pay the bill via an iPad, there's a selection for % tip. Kinda funny for a bakery, but I guess it's sort of a cafe as there's outside seating too. Nice staff, clean space, prices slightly cheaper than NYC. read more

Ellie's Bakery is small and charming, and their macarons are worth the hype. The other items I tried were tasty, but lacking the finesse that would award them a 5-star rating. First off, the tiny macarons are perfection. I got the pb chocolate one, and it tasted like a fancy Reese's cup. They're just the right balance of crunchy and chewy, and the flavors are on point. Next, the highly recommended chocolate chip banana bread was delicious, with a sturdy texture and pronounced flavor. I liked that it didn't feel extremely rich! I also tried a large merengue with dark chocolate that was beautiful and large but overall too sweet. There was also a graininess to it that I found unpleasant. The chai butterfly cookie had a good flavor, but was a tad too hard. And finally, my grilled cheese was again tasty but just felt under-indulgent. All of these pastries may be to your taste, though! I wish I had tried their breads instead, as people have recommended. Still, it's worth it to come just for the macarons! read more

I was ecstatic to hear of a new bakery opening up in my neighborhood... Always happy for more selection. The moment I walked in, Ellie's had won my heart over. Not only is it adorable, the jazz serenading me from their sound system warmed my soul... They have an impressive selection of baked goods, which seems to change every time I've been in. It's important to highlight the selection of fresh macaroons, and fresh baked bread. The espresso and coffee selection is fairly standard for a café/bakery; that being said, the quality is far beyond. I ordered a "Spicy Mocha" which I could see was made with care, and tasted as such. Incredibly delicious. My only regret is that the espresso could have been a bit hotter (in temperature - the spice was perfect). Also wish that the store itself was a bit larger, but again, not something they can really change. I look forward to coming here many more times. read more

Bought two birthday cakes for a birthday party. The service was excellent. They took my order and payment via email then over the phone. Difficult to park there. Don't expect to have a coffee inside because of c o v i d everything is outside. The cakes were very plain and presentation. The cakes themselves were very dense with very thin layers. Perfect to stand up for a very deep espresso or cappuccino. Thankfully we have the waitress cut very thin slices of each. The cakes are so dense that one 6-in cake could actually feed about 14 people because the slices need to be that small. I could see it getting cramped on a busy day but I haven't had any problems. The case is full of tasty treats; I should have to try them all sometime! For now, I've only had the breakfast sandwich.Yum! What a tasty breakfast sandwich. Plenty of cheese and egg, with a really tasty tomato jam to give a little bit more flavor. The sandwich comes on a house-made English muffin. Everything worked so well together; it just might have been one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had. Came here yesterday for a late lunch. Just happened upon it. And boy was I in luck. Had a wonderful pastrami sandwich on homemade potato bread with delicious homemade cole slaw. Not traditional deli type but oh so very good. We ended it with a couple of the delicious macaroons. The peaches and cream was just perfect. Liked it so much went back for breakfast. Ellie's is a wonderfully delicious addition to downcity. I first stopped in not too long after they opened for coffee and I'm not too sure why it took me so long to return. I came back last weekend and had a fantastic experience. Their menu contains a variety of sweet and savory cafe items but I immediately jumped to try their breakfast sandwich. Farm fresh eggs, smokey bacon, savory tomato jam, all on their house made English muffin. I was so excited to have another cute place downtown to grab a quick breakfast or lunch and a coffee. I thought their iced coffee was a tad bit bitter but I may try it as a red eye next time to jazz it up. The atmosphere is adorable. It's a small, European style cafe with counter seating and a few outdoor tables. The staff were friendly and brought out my order promptly. I just went to a wedding last night that had a beautiful dessert table with assorted treats from Ellie's Bakery. I have been wanting to go there but I just haven't found the time. Last night I lucked out. There were Macarons, Bouchons, Dulce de Leche Madeleine's, merengue kisses and these two different types of cream filled puffs. I tried most of the offerings and of the ones that I tried I was in love with the rich chocolate bouchons and the buttery dulce de leche Madeleine's. This is a beautiful cafe with marble counters, chairs with backs that look like cherry, dark wooden paneling, vintage mirrors, and terrific cappuccino on ceramic cups the staff kindly brings out to you. I especially loved the bouquets of roses, pinecones, green sprigs, and pussy willow. There is stenciling on the windows in an eyelet lace pattern. I feel like I'm back in Europe. read more

The new Ellie's on Weybosset is fantastic and beautiful. The expanded hours, more seatings, bigger menu make it such a nice experience. I've come here for breakfast and lunch. The pastries are very well made. The croissants are flaky, the cakes are unique (raspberry pistachio!) and their coffees and matcha are excellent. I'm already a huge fan of Gracie's, so perhaps I entered Ellie's with an inclination toward already loving it (since they share Ellen Gracyalny's ownership_, but seriously, Ellie's is great. Not quite at the same level of esteem as Gracie's is in my heart, but Ellie's has its own charm. I've tried the mortadella sandwich and the duck rillettes sandwich, along with a few macarons. Ellie's makes an expert macaron, with some seasonal/rotating flavors. Almost all I've tried have had well-formed shells and nicely balanced fillings: these are artfully done. The white chocolate olive oil and pumpkin seed are nice choices right now (and I think the former may be a "regular" flavor). The sandwiches: first off, I'm not a bread person, but when I'm at Gracie's I tend to attack my server several times throughout the night for more bread and that delicious butter. Ellie's has a lot of the same breads that Gracie's serves, and they are always delicious and fresh. Most of the sandwiches have very thick slices of bread (nearly 1"), but somehow these 2" of bread don't overpower the fillings. There's a lot of flavor packed into these sandwiches, which always have fresh, delicious, and homemade ingredients. They are pricier than a Subway sandwich ($8-8.50), but the quality is obviously leagues ahead. The counter staff slipped a miniature shortbread cookie on to my plate today with my sandwich, which was a sweet touch. Not an everyday lunch for me, but a great treat every once in a while. There's always been enough seating on weekday lunchtimes for me, but I'm not sure what it's like on the weekends. I also love that they use the Square system at their registers to check you out -- it's a cool piece of technology. This is a nice lunch spot in the revitalized Biltmore Garage area! read more
