Love the cakes , it's a little expensive but it's worth the money . Everything is good .

Okay it was Friday and I was making antipasto salad, spaghetti with sausages and wanted tiramisu for desert. Called several local bakeries and many had a couple of slices but for my family nothing but the entire cake is enough. A co-worker actually Yelped tiramisu and up popped Elvin's Bakery. Never heard of it but called and was advised yes indeed they had an entire cake. What a beauty, meant to take a picture but it was devoured before I could break out the iPhone! Such a little bakery at Kapalama shopping center. I have not pulled into the center in several years, it was such a dump. Now they have done a lot of work on the buildings, parking lot and even some landscaping so it was comfortable pulling in. Walked into the bakery and with two other customers the placed was jammed. In the small bakery case was my gorgeous cake, beautifully decorated with a couple of plump, sugared strawberries, chocolate straws and chocolate leaved dusted with espresso. The entire cake was dusted with espresso powder over whipped, piped cream. This was actually a white cake sliced in half inch layers, moistened with espresso and separated with a mixture of whipped mascarpone and cream. In addition to my cake there was a Guava cake and a very tempting strawberry short cake in the case. I would a bought all three but HB would not have let me in the house! I did buy some milk bread rolls which I whipped into garlic toast to go with dinner. I will be back, this is definitely a gem of a find for me. read more

Strawberry shortcake perfection! I've eaten a lot of desserts during my time on Earth and Elvin's makes the best strawberry shortcake I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying! It's so difficult to explain in words why it's so good, but you have to try it for yourself. The cake is so light, the cream flavorful yet not too sweet, and every bite has a sliver of fresh strawberry embedded in it. Is this dessert made by magic elves? Because I swear I ate some fairy dust and now I'm on cloud nine!!! I sat next to my husband in the car eating a slice of shortcake and tried not to make eye contact with him. Out of politeness I offered him a bite not thinking he'd ever say yes because he usually doesn't care for sweets. Much to my dismay he said yes and I begrudgingly gave him a bite. He said it was "okay." I love my husband but it made me mad to think that I'd just wasted a bite of precious cake on him. Then he had the audacity to ask for a second bite! For a second I thought about opening the car door and pushing him out, but decided to avoid a psychiatric evaluation and possible jail time. Yes, I love this strawberry shortcake that much. IVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR A GOOD STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE CAKE AND THIS PLACE IS THE PLACE TO GET THEM. It was my sisters birthday and she wanted a strawberry shortcake cake. I've always got them from Saint Germans Bakery in Times but they've shut down and I've been on the hunt since. Ive been searching through every store listed on yelp and cake across of Elvins Bakery. I decided to give them a shot due to all the reviews they've got. They're fast and friendly! I placed an order for 1/4 sheet cake on Friday and needed it to be ready by Saturday. Most places would tell me that's too soon etc, but this place said NO PROBLEM. UGHHH I WAS SO HAPPY. When I went to pick up the cake, it was ready and I was even happier. They've got all their cakes on display in their fridge and honestly everything looked so good. Would love to try the red velvet next time. I don't normally write reviews. Recently, we noticed that the special cakes we would buy from several high end bakeries had gotten smaller, drier, less tasty (almost tasteless) and more expensive. For our Mother's Day celebration to honor all our families' Moms, including those who were joining the party from heaven, the cakes had to be the best! So I went hunting for a new bakery and Yelp reviews gave such a strong endorsement, I decided to try Elvin's. As my first time purchase, I bought the strawberry shortcake and tiramisu for Mother's Day. Whoa! Both cakes were beautiful, soft and moist and a treat for the taste buds! Father's Day is coming up! I've found myself craving pastries. This is not a good thing. I didn't even think I liked pastries....Anyways, I have been wanting to try Elvin's for awhile, and finally managed to find myself in Kalihi one morning and decided to look for this infamous pastry shop. On a side note, I was cut off on the freeway by the Elvin's Bakery van a few days before--weird coincidence... Palama shopping center was undergoing some construction at the time and finding my way through the parking lot was troublesome. Surprisingly, I managed to get to Elvin's (on the far side of the parking lot) in one piece, without falling into any construction holes. I was very intrigued by the curry donut that elvin's makes, because maybe its just me getting into the whole pastry thing, but I don't see a lot of curry pastries (My grandparents always got curry puffs from Kwong On before they closed--I'm kinda pissed that I was so closed minded to pastries and didn't even try them). Anyways, the curry donut was just alright in my opinion, it was actually kind of sour tasting, which I dont know whether or not was intentional. My girlfriend was looking for a place to get a birthday cake for our son's second birthday. She remembered that this was my go to place for pastries when we worked together so she decided to try them out. We gave them a sample picture of what we wanted, with a few modifications, and they quoted us a very reasonable price. The process was simple and straightforward. When we picked up the cake we were happy that it turned out so well. When we actually ate it we liked it too. We got a Japanese cheesecake. Usually I hate frosting and I tend to scrape it off of any cake that I eat, but what they used was actually pretty good. We were happy and will use them again in the future. My only complaint about the place has to do with the availability of pastries. You have to go early in the morning to get the good stuff. My favorite is the cream cheese donut. THIS is where you buy a BIRTHDAY CAKE! Elvin's is tucked in next to Palama Supermarket and Zippy's in the strip mall and makes top rated cakes. They were voted Hawaii's best cake and it is a well deserved honor. Their cakes are very elaborate AND tasty. There are ornate designs on the mango mousse cake and fancy chocolate pieces and fresh fruit on every cake. It really makes the birthday person feel special. The mango mousse is to DIE for (and I'm not a huge cake fan...but i'll eat a slice of their cake any day!) I haven't tried any of the other pastries they have in the cases, but they look wonderful. Elvin's has an assortment of sweet and savory pastries that look similar to panya's. I will eventually try some. For now, our office will continue to order wonderful cakes from this friendly local business. A round cake runs about 30-32 dollars, but it's well worth it and people always rave about how pretty and delicious it is! read more

I first tried their delicious cakes when a friend bought it for his girlfriend for her birthday. With a lot of frosting I immediately took most of it off. But then I took a bite of the cake. Holy cake gods! It wasn't your normal sugary frosting. It was lightly whipped heaven on a cake with fruit and chocolate added for sweetness. Located in the newly renovated buildings off of Dillingham behind Zippys. This clean little shop has pastries, furikake lavosh (also good) and several types of cake. I've only had the strawberry shortcake and the mango (which is my favorite so far). I'm definitely going to go back to try their other yummy creations. You know you're a (somewhat) regular when the owner's wife asks your mother whether or not this child (moi) is the one with the Ham and Tuna Roll addiction. If I turned any more red, Elvin could have used me as a strawberry decoration for one of his delicious cakes! But truth be told, I'm not all that ashamed of my addiction--those who frequent Elvin's will understand why. Elvin's Bakery is one of those rare bakeries that still have love and passion buried in each and every baked good that graces their display cases. Even though the selection is not immense, the goods that are presented are perfected and without fault. The prices are also reasonable in comparison to places like Dee Lite Bakery and Liliha Drive-In/Bakery who, if anything, charge you more for their "celebrity" status than their actual baking capabilities and delectability of goods. Plus, how can you not fall in love with Elvin and his wife? They are such humble, personable individuals who you can't help but admire for their dedication and continuous hard work (if you think it's easy owning a bakery, think again). I almost forgot to mention their scrumptious cakes! I ordered two for the first time this past weekend--tiramisu and strawberry shortcake--for a couple of my coworkers' birthdays and I was surprised at how much of a hit it was with all of them. It's difficult for such a feat to occur when you have such a diverse amount of people with different palates. Although one of the birthday girls did mention that while the tiramisu was good, it could have used more rum. But other than that, the other birthday girls were more than happy with their cakes. I will definately be back to order more cakes for future birthdays or parties. Hell, if I hadn't already ordered my own birthday cake from Otto's, I would have ordered one from Elvin's. Located in the Kapalama Shopping Center, Elvin's is a neat little bakery that shines on the inside. While the exterior shopping center is going through some renovation, the bakery's inside is quite modern and nice. The bakery offers Japanese-Euro style baked goods like sweet-savory buns, an-pans, sponge-y cakes, cookies, etc. I got a spam and egg bun which was very good and my husband got a blueberry cream cheese scone. While I had asked questions the employees were talking amongst one another in Chinese. Kinda rude if u ask me. Looked around. They had a few bread loads available. Nothing interesting. They had some pastries in the pastry racks which did contain 2 flies roaming around having a feast. They're weren't to many varieties to choose from in the cold fridge of cakes. There were two whole cakes that looked a bit dry as if were sitting there for days and got dried out from cold fridge. Amongst the other flavors that were sliced, they're were one or three at the most of a few flavors as well. FOOD: I've walked passed this bakery several times but I've never gone inside until last week when I had to pick up a birthday cake for a coworker. The cakes were so beautifully displayed that I decided to treat myself to two slices of cake. LOL. I got a slice of the strawberry shortcake and the mango mousse. Both were beautifully decorated. The mango mousse was so soft and light! Very creamy and not too sweet. It was good but I thought the mango flavor could have been stronger. Strawberry shortcake was also good but I didn't think it was mind blowing. I did enjoy the fresh strawberries that was in it. I thought the price was a bit expensive but I can see why cause the cakes are very detailed. ATMOSPHERE: it's a cute small bakery. Very clean and nice decor! I didn't actually taste any of these so this review is based on my experience of buying pastries here only. Due to the nearby closed donuts shop, I was forced to find another alternative to buy a box of pastries to take as a thank you. I ended up at Elvin's, having heard good things. To my surprise, it was very nice inside and very similar to a Japanese style bakery (I was picturing something more like Nandings). They have similar type items such as melon pan and ham and cheese buns. Each piece ran close to $2, which I thought was steep, especially for the simpler items. The items are self service. You grab a tray and some tray liners and a tongs and help yourself to whatever you're going to purchase. I got there at around 7:45 on a Tuesday morning and there was one person in there already and one came while I was still getting my pastries so it's nice that it's not too crowded. The lady who rang me up had no personality, she barely spoke and kept a straight face. When she asked me to sign the credit card slip, I think all she did was pass it over and say "sign". She was pretty abrupt and lacked good customer service. I think she possibly barely mumbled out a "thank you" as I left the shop. Located off Dillingham across the big Chuck E Cheese complex. Ample parking available. I've always been able to find a stall in this lot although I've never been here during peak periods. read more

I picked up a few slices of their cakes to share with the ladies at work, and they were so light and delish! The lilikoi mousse was tart as expected, the lychee is my favorite, and you can never go wrong with red velvet! They were $3.50 per slice, but I felt like splurging today. What keeps me from rating Elvin's higher is their lack of customer service skills. The first time I visited, I took my time to look at all the different desserts in the showcase. The owner just stared at me, no 'hello' or small talk to see if he could suggest anything. Fine, maybe he's shy. This time his wife helped me. Again, no greeting as I walked in. I said hi to her, and she just stared at me as she wiped her nose with a kleenex. (Hmm, never thought about it until now, she didn't wash her hands!) Her husband came out and he put my desserts in a box. Thank goodness each slice was also pre-wrapped! I paid for my desserts and thanked her twice. She didn't say anything, not even a 'you're welcome'. I still love Elvin's. This time I actually got to go in and pick it up myself. They were open during the hurricane day! I believe it's a family run business. The pickup was fast and they were very friendly. I felt so bad that they were open during the hurricane, but I also saw that there were other cakes that were to be picked up. I hope the rest of the people picked up their cakes and didn't just abandon their cakes. They spent time and came to the shop instead of staying at home for people's cakes. Went back again and they had a lot more stuff than last time. Here's the verdict: Tuna Donut: Just canned tuna inside a savory fried donut. The filling was a little dry but still tasty and well seasoned. A little more mayo in that tuna would have been perfect. Coconut Tart: YUMM, it was like a macaroon in a little tart form. Garlic Roll: It wasn't filled with anything, the only garlic was a strip of paste they put along the top. It's good if you get your own stuff to fill it. We put in mozzarella, tomato, and basil and made a little caprese sandwich :). But by itself it was a little plain. Strawberry Shortcake: I love Japanese style shortcake! This one was really good and they used a little denser cake other than the light and fluffy cake (which I always like better) but it was still good. Mini Crossant: Cute but nothing special, just your typical croissant. They also put some kind of glaze on the top. Again the COCONUT CREAM ROLL is still my fave!! We always come here a little later in the afternoon after I pick up the bf from work...I think we just need to come here a lot earlier when they have more stuff. I don't know why I have never been here before!!! How could I have been so mean to myself!!! I have been deprived of one of the best bakeries in town! I went early on a Thursday morning to pick up some sweet and savory pastries for a work meeting! The variety is impressive and beautiful! It is similar to St Germaine or Panya's fare and equally as yummy! He even had yummy baked manapua! They don't have that at the other bakeries! The assortment I chose consisted of sausage rolls, ham and cheese rolls, curry donuts, tarts and melon rolls! And since I woke up early to get there at 6:30 am I got myself a manapua and strawberry shortcake! I have to sustain myself for the long day right!
