That said, I was not terribly anxious because I had already had such a wonderful, warm, and reassuring intake call with her assistant Sarah, who was kind, patient, and thorough. Even so, I had never met Dr. Sumner before, and with my anxiety being as high as it was, I felt that familiar edge of fear creep in. Within just minutes of speaking with Dr. Sumner, that fear completely melted away. Her presence was calm, grounded, and deeply compassionate, and I immediately felt safe. She took the time to truly listen, not just to my symptoms, but to my story. She gently and clearly explained that the anxiety I was experiencing was a very normal response to the amount of stress I had been under. That alone brought such relief. What truly stood out to me was when she explained how anxiety often feeds on itself, how we become anxious about having anxiety, which only intensifies it. That insight hit home so deeply. I had experienced a difficult bout of anxiety back in 2019, and having it return stirred up so many old, painful memories. Dr. Sumner understood this immediately and addressed it with such wisdom and kindness that I felt seen and understood rather than judged or rushed. She also quickly picked up on the fact that I am very hesitant about medication and strongly prefer natural approaches. Instead of dismissing that, she respected it fully. Learning that Dr. Sumner is also an herbologist spoke straight to my heart. It meant everything to be working with someone who honors both mental health and natural healing. Her approach felt balanced, thoughtful, and deeply humane. By the end of our call, I felt something I had not felt in a long time, peace. I could breathe again. I felt hopeful. I even felt excited about my life moving forward. That shift alone was priceless. Dr. Sumner is thoughtful, caring, gentle, brilliant, and genuinely kind. She has a rare ability to calm, reassure, and empower all at the same time. But there came a time, that I decided I could no longer internalize all of the tough decisions and conflicting feelings I was faced with at this point in my life. I worked with David Sternberg, the director of DC Talk Therapy. David is a kind, calm, steady voice of reason when your mind moves at a mile a minute. I immediately felt comfortable speaking about all of the areas of my life and David is a great listener and only inserted questions and advice when it was absolutely critical to point something out. Over the course of about 7 sessions, David guided me from feeling weighed down, confused and apathetic to feeling optimistic, positive and driven. David was able to help me sort through my feelings and reactions to the influences in my life and helped to connect the dots and pinpoint the ways of thinking that were perpetuating my state of unhappiness. On an administrative note, his administrator Susan is great. When I had to cancel an appointment with very late notice, they let it slide the one time to remind me of the 24 hour cancellation policy. I find that very professional and customer focused. Parking at their Woodley Park office is easier than you might imagine. I never paid for parking because there is ample street parking during the day as long as your appointment is not during rush hour. There are plenty of meters, which I never had to use, but are there in case you can't get a free spot. I would definitely recommend David to anyone needing a mentor to help pull you through a tough time. They are considered out-of-network for many insurance providers but they were very reasonably priced for the quality of guidance I felt I received.

Update: It's so much worse. I finally went to a Dr. who specializes in rehabbing wrists/hands post…read moreop. I had 3 months from the date of my surgery to recondition my wrist to be able to bend before the cartilage kind of freezes. At that point you permanently lose full capability. It's a biological timeline. So working on range of motion is paramount. At ATI I was provided puddy, a strength web, a hand strengthener, etc... We worked on range of motion for a couple minutes on my 4th or so visit. I never knew I was in a race against time. The people there were nonchalant and told me very little. I was left with a receptionist at times who said "you don't know how to do that?" when I asked for guidance. Eventually she looked it up. My physical therapist was two feet away not introducing herself or helping me. My new doctor, who again is a specialist can't believe how negligent they were. Now I have to face the real possibility that my wrist will never have full capability because I chose this physical therapist chain. I've gone to a physical therapist in DC who worked with me my entire session. That was my only other experience with physical therapy. Here, your physical therapist may be speaking with an employees across the room, working with a patient with more significant needs, or sitting with you but not paying attention to the exercise you're doing. I actually wonder why I go. I do need physical therapy but they're very comfortable having you work alone for much of your appointment. It's absurd. It really feels like you're bothering them when you have a question or need guidance. Or if you get guidance it might be from feet away because the physical therapist is helping someone else so the entire gym hears. I could go on. I genuinely feel like they're annoyed I'm there like I didn't have an appointment and pay. It's been unhelpful and awkward.

The scheduling, intake and assessment went well, to the point that I could immediately see what I would need to be working on. Staff members communicate well with me and with each other. Anjali is my therapist, and her guidance and feedback through the assessment and the program is clear and encouraging. I recently needed to address an error I made in my appointment time, and staff were quick to assist me with the connection I was trying to make in navigating the process.
