Impromptu stop at Armature Works after an IKEA trip. Didn't take long walking around to know we wanted to eat here. Great choice!!! We had a Tampa Girl which was fantastic! Basically a Cuban sandwich in an empanada. Perfectly cooked and the perfect size. We also had chips and salsa and added a small queso. Salsa was super fresh with just the right amount of cilantro, onions and garlic. The queso wasn't anything to write home about...save your $2 and put it towards another empanada. This local food truck now has a restaurant stall inside the Armature Works Heights Public Market. I decided I had the post this review simply to be first. Kinda Yelp crazy, I know... We enjoyed two empanadas from here, one vegetarian called "no moo" and the other was bacon-focused. Both were well prepared and fun although together, they cost ten bucks. The food here was great. I went today, and the girl at the counter was super fun and friendly. She suggested the vegan taco, even though she wasn't vegan (and neither am I), and said it's one of her favorites. It's officially my favorite now too!! It had roasted brussel sprouts and mushrooms, as well as street corn and cotija cheese. That may sound weird, but the flavors were amazing. I also got the adobo chicken taco, which was really good. And a side of street corn that was roasted really well and had cotija cheese on top. I definitely suggest squeezing the lime wedge all over it! It's exactly what it needed. I also added a side of parmesan fries. The fries themselves were thin and crispy, just the way I like them! But I didn't think the addition of parmesan really did much for them. They were perfect dipped in the Mexican hot sauce they serve there, though! I would definitely eat here again, and plan to try out their popular empanadas or their buffalo chicken tenders (which I saw someone eating and they looked amazing)! If I was only rating this place on the empanadas, this place would get a 5/5. But after reading reviews I decided to try the bam bam chicken with fries. I was definitely disappointed with this part of the meal. The staff member stated that the base of the sauce was buffalo which was great since I love buffalo sauce. In the end I was not a huge fan of the sauce. It was a tad too sweet and not quite spicy enough for my liking. The fries were well done and crispy, just how I like it. Finally on to the empanadas. The Tampa Girl empanada was very good. Lots of filling, yet small for $5. The cheeseburger empanada that my husband ordered has way too much going on inside. We both didn't like that one. Customer service can do a lot better at armature works. I ordered the bang bang chicken, sauce on side. Come back to get ketchup. They tell me they are out, thats fine. But I ask for more bang bang sauce as a substitute of ketchup for the fries. I'm told that's another $1...in normal circumstances, fine if I really wanted the sauce. I only wanted a substitute for the fries since you had no ketchup--you want to up charge me for sauce when you run out of ketchup and can't be bothered to provide better customer service and give more sauce is a bit ludicrous. And then I find out (because my girlfriend was still waiting) that the girl behind the counter makes a snarky remark for my "demanding sauce request." Updated: 3. I appreciate the owner reaching out and providing an explanation that this is not customary to how she runs a business and this particular situation isn't a norm. I really wanted to go back to Hemingway's but I decided to try something different and the line was super long here so it must be good, right? I enjoyed a ride along the Hillsborough River on the Pirate Water Taxi this past Friday and decided to stop off at Armature Works. I knew I was going to try Empamamas for the first time since it was national empanada day. This is the first time I stopped and really looked at the menu for purchase. The empanadas they offer, three choices, are not my style. But in the spirit of being a foodie and a food blogger- I threw caution to the wind and decided to be adventurous. That being said, I am a traditionalist and like Picadillo filled empanadas (which they don't offer). So I purchased the Tampa Girl which is all of the fillings you would find in a Cuban sandwich (sans Cuban bread) and the buffalo chicken empanada. Which was a huge leap of faith since I don't like blue cheese but it was my favorite out of that two. I thought the service could've been a little bit friendlier, it seemed they go off of their popularity more so customer service. Empamamas was in my neighborhood tonight, so I grabbed a few empanadas to go and ate them at home. The crust on each was perfectly crisp and flaky. The Tampa Girl, their take on a Cuban, was awesome. The cheese was melted perfectly and lots of meat and other toppings inside for a perfect blend! I also had the Bacon You , with chicken , bacon, ranch and red onions. It was really good, too, but the Tampa Girl was definitely my fave. Next time I'd like to try a combo - two empanadas and a side item, and get the Parmesan fries. Bang bang chicken with fries was huge, you get four giant chicken strips covered in bang bang sauce which has a little kick to it but not too spicy. The seasoned fries were flavorful. We were super excited to try some empanadas based on the reviews! Looking at the menu pictures here on yelp, we saw there was an "award winning" vegan option, which is perfect because we eat a plant based diet. Sadly, it was not available the day we were there to order (an employee let me know that they rotate the options). It seems kind of silly that their only vegan choice is one of the ones that they rotate, especially if it is good enough to win an award. That was really disappointing. We then tried the next vegan option; the cauliflower taco... and we were unimpressed. The taco was skimpy and the flavors non-existent. You're better off making your own vegan tacos. The place was busy and there are a lot of good reviews, so I'm sure they do have some good things on the menu. Unfortunately if you don't eat meat, you won't be able to find out. The service was fast even with a long line and the employees were friendly, so they do get a star for that. You're probably thinking it's chicken tenders & fries...how good could they be? AMAZING! The sauce is like a buffalo + honey mustard combo, the batter is in sync with the chicken & the fries were on par with the best of the best skinny ones out there.
