I hate to give out negative reviews, but I'm sorry to say I have to update since my last review here. The food has gone downhill and the prices have gone up. Today is most likely the last time I'll ever visit Enchiladas Y Mas. They have changed, and not for the better. I've been here four or five times since my previous review, and each time I've left more disappointed. I guess I kept coming back based on old fond memories. It appears maybe they changed ownership or something. A lot of new different staff. No one I used to recognize. The food has gone downhill and the prices have gone up. Specifically, the final straw for me today was when I ordered the Chicken Enchilada plate, I had to "add on a side of rice and beans" for an additional $2. Since when does an enchilada plate not come with rice and beans and you have to add it on? Just up the price of the plate and include rice and beans- people expect that. And we have noticed the prices on everything have gone up. It's not the good, cheap Mexican we used to love. And I was very dissatisfied with my plate. The chicken in the enchiladas was just bland and dry. The whole meal came across as dried out. The plate itself was scorching hot- burned my finger- the rice and beans were hot- but the enchiladas we're luke warm. And we waited a while for the food. It was all just "meh" The chips tasted a bit stale. My husband felt similarly about his beef enchiladas, and last time we ordered the fajitas (which we used to LOVE) they were a real let down as well. Enchiladas Y Mas - Salad Near Me - Austin, Texas

My first visit to Enchiladas y Mas was requested by my adult son on his birthday (special to him). I checked comments of earlier diners just to be better advised. Even at 2PM on a Thursday afternoon there was a 10-minute wait for our party of three. The hostess said there would be a 10-minute wait and, mirabile dictu, she call exactly 10 minutes later! The chips and salsa were standard restaurant fare. The salsa was spicy, but not too spicy as some comments asserted. I ordered the guacamole dip with the expectation that it would be on the garlicy side; it was not. The queso dip was also normal tex-mex. We all wanted fajitas, and EyM flexibly increased their usual fajitas for two to be fajitis for three. It was a huge amount of food! The last time I complained about a dish being too salty was in 1970 when 2LT Joe Pritchard made spaghetti, but that's another story. My point is salty is usually ok with me. But today I found the fajitas too salty and a bit strange-tasting for fajitas. I think they put chili powder in the marinade, but that's just a wild guess. For reference, I find the fajitas at all Casa Garcia's, Los Comales, and all Baby A's "normal." Also, EyM does not serve charro beans; their refried beans are bland. I usually shy away away from refried beans because I heard they contain lard; these beans seemed to contain neither lard nor flavor. One other note: the Mexican rice was unusually spicy compared to the other Tex-Mex places mentioned earlier. Staff was expectedly efficient, courteous, friendly and attentive. Our bill averaged out to about $20 per person, tip included, no alcohol. Overall, our visit was good not great, but not bad either. A lot of of food for the money, good service, but fajitas that were...different (and too salty), spicier rice, no charro beans. I gave three stars. read more

This is a good little hole in the hole that I like to go to when I've had a looong day at work. Although, parking is a bit tight, I think those top shelf margaritas are well worth it. 1 will have you right, 2 call a cab! The enchiladas aren't my favorite but after a drink it doesn't even matter. There was one thing I was absolutely disappointed with and that's the store bought tortillas they give you on the side. We like hot & fluffy tillas, not warm thin with that after taste ones. Other than that, the service was good. read more

Average but very cheap neighborhood tex-mex joint with an unusually larger local following and long wait times that don't befit the quality of the food. Don't get me wrong - I give them 3-stars which is "A-Ok" on Yelp's scale, so I'm not knocking them at all. But this type of tex-mex gets pretty bland after you've had it all over Central Texas for the past 25 years. If you live near by you're already well aware of the place and the wait times on pretty much any week or weekend night. The services is fine with no complaints and the beers are generally around $3.00 at happy hour and about $4-$5 otherwise, which is also "fine" but not cheap for the bland domestics they offer (in addition to the Mexican beers, and they don't carry Bohemia, which IMO is the best, better than Negra Modelo). Pretty sure they don't make tortillas or corn tortilla tostada chips in-house. They all taste store bought as do a few of their enchilada sauces (haven't tried them all). Their salsa is surprisingly spicy, which is great for Austin. Pretty much you gotta have a good salsa these days, and it frankly isn't hard to make. Give them a try if you don't mind hanging around outside for 20 minutes. You won't be disappointed by the food if you have reasonable expectations, and it's very affordable especially for this day and age in Austin. My husband and I went to check this place out, as we have heard good things and live so close. It is definitely a no frill kind of place, but we expected that. Service was very friendly. The chips were disappointing...they were quite burnt. I've never had tortilla chips so burnt before! They were still edible, but kind of a burnt popcorn thing going on. The salsa was okay and very spicy. We both got cheese enchiladas, my husband with beef sauce and mine with "Spanish" sauce. They were really good!! Will be back to try their drinks. read more

This Tex-Mex restaurant is definitely local, and not a tourist destination, unless your a tourist who looks for off the beaten path. We got there around 7 pm and, due to capacity limits, there was an hour wait. We did choose to wait. During our wait outside, we saw a significant amount of take-away, so they do appear to be a popular restaurant. To their timeline, we were seated right at an hour after we got there. Tables were spaced out for social distancing. It isn't a large restaurant, so in the main room there were only about 7/8 tables. There we some other tables in an adjoining room, but not very many. The food here is EXCEPTIONAL!! We had their Queso, which was not as thick as some I've had, but the taste ranked way high by comparison. So we could have a sampling, we ordered Flautas and a dinner plate with Taco and Enchiladas. The Flautas were great, white meat, not dry and fried perfectly crisp; the Taco was very good and the Enchiladas were filled with cheese and the sauce was great! The rice and beans were also pretty tasty and the salsa had a bite, but it wasn't too hot! These plates were overflowing, so the prices being reasonable, you definitely get your monies worth. The woman who greeted us, and brought our chips/salsa and took our drink order, was very pleasant, but our actual server, he seemed less than pleased to be working the table. Nothing happened to warrant the attitude, so not sure what the issue there was. I can say that, based on the interactions we saw, they have a steady client base of regular customers. Even our server, being somewhat curt to us, had banter with another of his tables. I will say that the food was outstanding, the table service not so much, but the overall experience, with such great food, would warrant a return visit from me and I'd recommend it, knowing that you may not get an exceptionally friendly server, but you will get a wonderful meal!! read more

Enchiladas Y NO Mas I have been a long time regular here. It was one of my favorite holes in the wall ... typical Austin home grown family own place... I will never go back there again after the way I was treated when waiting for a table. The hostess was incredibly rude to me and my fellow diner... When we asked to talk with the to the manager he not only didn't care but was also incredibly rude. I and my friends will never be back. If its a weekend... you're going to wait but is any worth while place NOT have a wait? The great news is that the margarita bar is in the back and if you have more than 2 you might stumble out. Strong margs, quality chips and salsa with some spice and the plates are always of overflowing with food. Enchiladas are my favorite as the beef and ranchero sauce is a must. Service is as great as it can be whenever you're dealing with a small riot of people. Will absolutely go back. read more

Having been raised in the area and going to high school around the corner I was raised on Enchiladas Y Mas food. I think I've been coming here for at least 15+yrs. However living farther north Austin now days I am not able to eat here as much as I used to. I probably had not been here in at least a year or so. They still serve you very filling portions of food but it seems like little things have changed that have changed the experience for me. I used to crave their chips and salsa but this past visit the chips were different and the salsa was different. Not sure if they changed vendors but this is the first time I did not eat 3 baskets of chips. Honestly i did not even finish the first basket. The food has changed as well. However I can't quite put my finger on it as to what has changed. There is just something different about. One thing that has not changed is the service. This place was actually pretty solid. My friend recommended it so we checked it out. As annoying as it is to wait over 30 minutes for a table, usually it tells you about how good the food is. And the enchiladas I had were actually really good and the service was great. My friend told me the chips and salsa were amazing. Frankly, I thought the salsa tasted like a modified pace picante. Could have used some more enchilada sauce. If you don't want a ton of cheese, you should order light cheese like my wife and I did. This place is a solid joint and seems to be family run or owned. I love the enchiladas, especially the beef. This is comfort food. BUT.... I have a problem with this place. The last TWO times I've been there, I have been greeted the exact same way: With an impatient look of annoyance, and the immediate announcement that I better hurry up and sit down because they're about to close. How welcoming! The thing is, on the last occasion I walked in 18 minutes before closing time (which I didn't even realize because the hours aren't posted on the door), but even so, is there anything wrong with that? The sign in the window said "Yes We're Open," so I assumed they were still open! (It was only 1:42pm.) At any rate, it was made very clear to me that I could eat there if I wanted, but I was seriously getting in the way of the crew being able to go home. My friend and I sat down tentatively, wondering if we should even stay, and felt extremely rushed as the staff frantically turned up chairs around us before we even got our food. Another couple walked in several minutes after we did (although still before closing time), and even though an employee seated them, the couple got up and walked out without glancing at the menu because they felt so unwelcome. The restaurant should have turned that "Open" sign to "Closed" a long time ago if they were so anxious to shut down. And I am only posting this because, like I said, this same scenario has happened to me twice in a row. The owners of this place basically need to remember that they run one of 9,000 tex-mex restaurants in this city, and so they need to chill out and stop treating customers as if they were pests. read more

My first visit here was like something out of a John Waters film. We were seated in the far area by the windows and the people across from us, oh, help me, Jeez-us. It was about 11 am but the guy at their table had one of the loudest voices I've ever experienced in my life. They were all cackling loudly and talking about visiting different parts of Austin. It was like listening to trailer trash plan out their day in the big city. Wowza. I know a restaurant can't be faulted for who walks in the door, but sheesh, I had a giant headache by the end of that extravaganza. Nonetheless, I did enjoy my chicken soft tacos. They were so large I was able to make two meals out of them and the chicken was very lean, good quality, white meat. Last night, on the other hand, was like an Oscar winning Meryl Streep film. We got there early enough to avoid the crowds and the service was extremely helpful. I am an enchilada freak and very picky about them. I really enjoyed my chicken enchilada platter, they were tasty and hot. The rice was delectable, as were the beans. Everything had its own unique and tasty flavor. It was again so big I made two meals out of it. Enchiladas Y Mas is perfect for good, tasty, inexpensive Tex Mex food in a diner type setting. My only very minor complaint is that the young man we paid at the register seemed like he would rather be doing anything else on Earth than taking our payments. My wife and I come here almost once a week because the food is so good and inexpensive! We get migas every time with a single cheese enchilada and share. The salsa is fresh and hot! The margaritas are good, but strong. The wait can be long so come early, be loud, stay late, and wear orange (optional), just like you were at a Texas game! When the wait is long it's because the building is small and the love for the place is BIG! We the people are willing to wait because it's that good! It's also very loud. I've been begging to eat at this place for months. Seriously, every time I've tried to come on a whim, Finally happened in for lunch with my S.O. around 3 on a Thursday. First thing that caught my eye were the tables and chairs. Okay, small business, cheep tables and chairs... cool, no biggie, some of my favorite places are on the low end of decor. Took a little while before we were told just to head to a table. Got settled in and was greeted with a smile and I ordered iced tea. (hey, the only thing with free refills of course) Chips and salsa came out with our drinks (first batch is complimentary but then they charge after that) Now that salsa was pretty solid. By solid, I mean good. And by good, I mean "nom nom gimme more salsa" good. Chips? Meh. I ordered the chicken enchiladas with verde sauce (because yay tomatillos!) and beans and rice. My s.o. ordered a plate that came with a chalupa. It comes out pretty fast, and that's when things went south. Not "south of the border" south, but "h-e-double hockey sticks" south. First of all, a chalupa was a glorified taco bell disaster. Except Taco Bell uses better cheese. There was literally shredded velveeta/guvment cheese on top. Wtf is this? I tried a bite, cried a little inside and waited for the entrees. And waited. And waited some more. And guess what? Waited some more! Finally our plates came out, and we were warned they were hot. Like they were bathed in the radiation from seven nuclear bombs. Those heat lamps did a lot of work to make sure everything was still hot. The beans almost developed a rock like texture and the rice might has well been uncooked it was so dry. A glob of sour cream and random lettuce and tomato thrown on top. Oh, and some very sub par corn tortillas on the side. Wow. Now to talk about the taste of my meal. The beans were bland, possibly overcooked before being refried. Not to mention quite hard. The rice, very little tomato flavor, basically red colored, salty rice. The enchiladas should be good right? It is "Enchiladas y Mas" right? Wrong. Chicken was a disgusting texture. Almost like some mash of glop, and most of the sauce evaporated due to the heat lamp. Salsa without a kick? My wife won't eat the salsa cuz it's always so hot. I LOVE it since I'm a big fan of salsa muy caliente. Their queso is also pretty spicy which is another plus for me. I also noticed one reviewer based their opinion of this place off a GRILLED CHEESE! Do you think that's a good food indicator for a tex-mex place? Sheesh! Another thing I don't understand are the criticisms I've seen about their rice. What's to criticize? It's rice! Have you ever told your friends, "Hey, let's go to Joe's tex-mex because I've just got to have some of their rice." I really don't notice much difference between their rice and rice served at other tex-mex places. Their enchiladas are great! Not the best I've ever had, but certainly way above average. I think they use Liquid Smoke on the beef, but I'm not sure. All I know is that they have a unique smokey flavor I really like. Service is always friendly and fast. Alright, when I say that I am a fan, I am a fan only for one thing there. Fajitas! I have been to this place a couple of times and make the mistake of not getting the fajitas and I can say that what I did eat was the enchiladas and they were greasy and way too much for my stomach to handle. So I can totally understand that. As for the fajitas, they are great. My husband and I went a couple of nights ago and got the fajitas for one. We were able to share the huge portion and I was totally full. We also had a small queso that had something in it that was kinda strange, and I think it was garlic... not sure. But the fajitas were good, the tortillas were fresh, and it made 5 portions. I doubt that I could recommend anything else there, but if you were to go get the fajitas and know that the portions are huge. The fajitas for 2 is an astounding amount of food. Enchiladas Y Mas just reinforces the universal lesson - never go to an ethnic restaurant where they cater exclusively to white people. In this case, you'll be served a sad plate of gringo food. My enchiladas were fairly asphyxiated in a pool of chili con carne. I think perhaps the "Y Mas" part of the equation in the restaurant's name is the slop that they drown your food in. The rest of the plate was piled fairly high with a sort of low-quality instant rice, and refried beans. I noticed other diners would slurp up their enchiladas and leave nearly all of their rice and beans on the sides when they left to pay the bill. The tortillas were thin, limp and depressing. The cheese on top of everything wasn't even Mexican - I believe it was American cheese, the lowest form of all pasteurized milk products. I will say however that the chips were fresh and tasty, though the salsa tainted my enjoyment of them by being excessively hot, even to someone who enjoys spicy foods. I couldn't believe how slammed with customers this place was on a Tuesday night, but then you look around and the only brown faces there are the servers. It's like one of those tourist cafes where they cater to what they think Middle-Americans would like and water it down accordingly. Basically, it's Tex-Mex Applebee's. I would rate the food quality as being slightly above Taco Bell, but distinctly below Taco Cabana. Now granted, I didn't try the migas, which many of the other yelpers appear to like, so I can't judge fully. Sure, Enchiladas Y Mas might be a little shabby inside and out, but the delicious food makes up for what the somewhat rundown interior lacks. With a pretty nifty wait system in staff, the overflowing crowd into the parking lot was nothing to fret about. You simply put your name on a list, grab a beer at the bar and wait. They whole vibe of the restaurant is definitely a laid back one. No pressure to endure a 3 hour fancy spread. Before I reached the bottom of my magarita, we were being seated. Though, the service was a tad slow at first, once the hot sauce hit the table we dove right in. The chicken and beef fajita medley was moist, flavorful, and piping hot. I usually am on the brink of exploding after just one corn tortilla stuffed tight with fajita meat, onions, bell peppers, and guacamole, but these were just tasty enough I wasn't stopping after one or two. The food is also pretty bad, and the place is super dirty. The bathroom is filthy. If you just want a drink (the only good thing about this place is the margaritas), the waitress will ignore you the rest of the time because your not getting food. If cheese had an orgy in your mouth, it would taste like this. It's straight up old school Tex-Mex, it's packed with people who you can tell are regulars, and it's your cholesterol count's worst nightmare. My Dinner Regular sported two oversized cheese enchiladas topped with chili con carne, a crispy taco, rice and beans and tortillas. The cheese they use is the soft government cheese / Velveeta sort that makes the ideal Tex Mex enchilada, served in a quantity that's either generous or sadistic, depending on how you look at it. Somehow, though, even though these seem to be made just like the very best Tex-Mex enchiladas I've sampled over the years, they fell shy of the sublime magic they promised. My taco was similarly overstuffed, with pleasant but bland beef and more of the signature cheese. Rice and beans were standard fare. The meal was solid but portion size were was most remarkable thing about it. My server was friendly despite the lunchtime rush and the feeling that you're surrounded by happy regulars makes for a good vibe. There's something intangible that puts Enchiladas Y Mas ahead of most similar Tex-Mex holes-in-the-wall, but there's also something intangible that keeps me from really liking the place. I've been told by my friends that I shouldn't even review Y Mas because it's so good that they don't want to share it with people. I can't not tell you how awesome this place is though! It's small and tight quarters, hard to find a place to stand or sit at first. But let me tell you about the best margaritas ever! You think that other places have strong ones? You are wrong. These are not only super strong they are also delicious. If I have two of them, I'm good to go for the night! The food is yummy and they have a huge menu of different things to try. Hence, Y Mas. I always get the enchilada's because they are so good and I'm a sucker for em. But I have friends who have tried the migas, the steak, grilled cheese, burgers, etc. And all of it is great. And talk about affordable! There were 10 people who ate there - each had at least 2 margaritas if not more - and food....the bill was $160! That's some crazy goodness. Check it out, it's a good time. I read a lot of the reviews on here and it seems people dislike this place because of the cheese. Well, as a tall gooney white kid, I am a expert on cheese and I must say I LOVE THE CHEESE. It tastes like some sort of government cheese. You know, like it is some weird cheese they had in a WW2 bunker and they were like "hell let serve these babies up". The queso, which is my favorite in Austin, is made with the same cheese and has a strong awesome garlic taste. The tortillas are gods gift to fat kids because they are DELICIOUS! I get to a point where I have tons of tortillas left and nothing to put inside of them so I start considering things like Margarita tacos or chip burritos. The staff I find to be pretty on top of things. We get our drinks right away, chips and salsa delivered in no time at all and the food usually only takes about 10 mins tops. They can be a bit grumpy sometimes but most of the time they seem pleased to see ya. The only thing I have to complain about is the bathrooms. Those things be shady. Extremely small with a door that appears a toddler can kick in. Also, I have found if you do not get there before 6 you will be waiting in a huge line. Also keep in mind, they are closed on Sundays and Mondays so plan accordingly. read more

Went there tonight for dinner waitress bought me and my friend tickets out. Put my money and ticket on the table for the waitress to pick up my money, well two white young white guys were in there they got up and slid by our table and took the 20 dollars off our table. The ladies sitting across from us said she saw the dudes walk very close when I was looking at my phone. Everyone has their favorite hole-in-the-wall tex-mex joint, but it's REALLY hard to argue the all-around superiority of y mas. Anything you could want when you crave this kind of food is masterfully done here, from the margaritas to the fajitas. Speaking of margaritas, their frozen margs are pretty legendary. Well, semi-frozen I suppose, since most nights they're made far too strong to stay solid for very long, but you'll hear few complaints from someone who's finished one. Most people will talk about the enchiladas, which are definitely top tier, but what stands out for me has always been the beef fajitas. I don't know how they cook them, but the meat is some of the most flavorful I've ever tasted. Once I start popping bits in my mouth, before long I've almost run out before I even start on the sides, which is quite a feat considering how much you're given. When I first came here, I noticed how Enchiladas Y Mas reminded me of Mexican restaurants in the small town where I grew up - same chairs, same decorations, same small-town Mexican restaurant feel. It was a nice reminder and made the place feel more homey; surely, I would join the Enchiladas Y Mas bandwagon. Then I noticed that it had been about a year since my first visit and I didn't really remember what the food was like. My friend has been meaning to try this place since he moved here two years ago and thus a trip to Enchiladas Y Mas was set in motion. Same chairs, same decorations, same small-town Mexican restaurant feel, but the food left a lot to be desired. The salsa was good and reminded me a lot of my Mom's salsa, but the chips were pretty stale. My beer was served with a chilled mug and a thick slice of lime, which was great. The enchiladas? I believe Holly A. said it best with, "Don't get me wrong, I loves me some government cheese, but I don't do salty glue." The beans and rice weren't that great and those enchiladas, man. Heavy, I feel sick to my stomach, this is a step below government cheese enchiladas. I choked down as much of my food as I could and was then instantly filled with regret. My stomach hated me and was leading a revolt. My friend's stomach was doing the same thing. I'm totally on board with small town Mexican food, but I'm not down for questionable Mexican food that makes me want to curl up into the fetal position after eating it. That's no bueno. Delicious enchiladas, huge glasses of water and tea, love that. Chips way too salty, hot sauce real hot, I like that. All in all it's a really good restaurant, I've returned a few times and will return in the future. read more

I seriously don't understand the good reviews for this place. It makes me really angry when a restaurant does not take quality seriously. I don't want to eat at a Tex-Mex restaurant that doesn't bother to have real cheese. Maybe Velveeta melts better, but it tastes awful and it was piled high on everything. Salsa was tasty, but chips were not homemade, nor were they warm. Rice and beans were good, but the tortillas in enchiladas were kind of crunchy. The carne guisada was tough and flavorless. The tortillas were definitely store bought and lukewarm. I saw many people eating fajitas - maybe that's what we should have ordered - but the place's namesake is enchiladas. Service was decent, but could have been a lot better, considering I saw so many people standing around. It's really sad when I feel I can say that Taco Cabana has better tasting and better quality food than a local joint like this. read more

Bueno Mi Amigos! Good Hole-in-the-wall Mexican food. Get the Margs and Migas, skip the onions and optional queso. Nothing fancy here, just comfort in food form. Pros: - Atmosphere: It's an open cafeteria style place. Low rent. Unpretentious. People of all walks. - Service: The waitresses have always been great to us. Quick. Responsive. Smiling. Happy, but not fake. - Food: Chips and salsa are great. Salsa is respectably hot. Migas are fresh. Refried beans are smooth. Margs are standard. Enchiladas are great. People also seem to tout the beef fajitas, although I've not had them myself. - Price: Cheap cheap. Cons: - Queso: One yelper noted the salty-glue-esk queso. As much as I hate to disparage the Mas, I have to admit that I too had a bad queso experience. If you order the Migas with the optional queso, be prepared for thick gooey queso with Migas floating in it. It might not always be that bad. Maybe just a fluke. Who knows.
