Yikes! The quality of the pizza I had tonight was awful. They skimped out on the crust.I asked for extra sauce they ignored it, I ordered two toppings and it literally looked like they tossed a small amount of it on one quarter of the pizza. I ordered a large-size pizza today from here after hopping between a lot of options and was hoping that it would be good. After I ordered online, I saw my total $17.12 and the email confirmation also affirmed that. However, when the girl came to deliver the pizza she demanded an amount 19.12 and had a receipt for the same too. Anyways I had to give her $20 and when I expected her to return the change, she just walked away. I was a little bit surprised since I have never seen people do that here. Anyways, I thought atleast the pizza must be worth 20 bucks. But, yikes, it just turned out one of the worst ones I have ever had. I used to grab a slice here once in a while, so when my favorite calzone place was closed I decided to give them a try. The plus: they have ricotta cheese, which, for some reason, a lot of places in the area don't. The negative: everything else. I ordered a spinach calzone with ricotta and mozzarella cheese. Overall, the service was mediocre and the food was alright. The prices are a little too much for the amount of you get. However, that was in regards to what I ordered. I got a side of buffalo chicken tenders and a side of fries thinking that the portion would be a little bigger than the dinner portion. We decided to eat there since the Red Sox game was on. When it came out, the food was hot and was decent, but I realized I paid way to much for that amount of food. My friends split a large cheese pizza. The pizza was HUGE! It looked really good too. Price was a little steep for a large cheese pizza, but that looked decent for the price. I wasn't too happy about all the flies in the restaurant, but I understand that it can be difficult to get rid of them quickly. I used to love Engine House for their great food. Unfortunately, their completely abysmal service as of late has made me change my mind on the place. My two most recent orders were over an hour late. The first was an online order which "was never received because their internet was down" and was not actually started until i called a half hour after it was supposed to arrive. After two and a half hours, I had received my meal which arrived cold without so much as an apology from anyone but the driver himself. The second time, their one driver had taken my meal with him as he went to his wife who was in labor. While I cannot fault him individually, the restaurant's solution was to try and call someone else in for a new order which could take quite some time. I cancelled my order and informed them of my decisions to go elsewhere. As the old adage goes, "fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." I will, however, be a fool no longer - and I will take my business to some of the other wonderful places in Salem which are much more timely - and I will be warning my friends. read more

i don't know why people keep saying this is 'italian-style' pizza... one of my pet peeves about the Salem casual restaurant scene is the prevalence of greek-style pizza, so I was excited to try someplace with my favored crust style. It's true that it's not the greek-style oilier crust like most of the other places in town, but it's not quite like the italian-style I prefer. The crust tastes like saltines to me. Their subs are fine, the dining room is open pretty late, and they serve beer -- the trifecta of late-night goodness. Their dining room is very pleasant and clean, and the food arrives quickly. The service is just adequate. The surprising win on the menu is the chicken fingers, which taste fresh and homemade. If only their pizza were as good. read more

By far the best pizza we've ever had. From plain cheese to different toppings, always delicious. Salads are great, feta is always good. Calzones are also yummy. Add a couple beers and a glass of wine as well, great for a cheap and delicious Friday night dinner. Service is great, quick as well. Great place to bring kids too! Fantasic pizza, good prices and great owners! The pizza is really the best around. Better yet, it is not that much extra $ to add toppings. My favorite is ricotta, feta and garlic on top of a regular cheese pizza. My son's birthday party was on Christmas Eve and I called in an order about 2 hrs before closing time. I got my 4 pizzas nice and hot delivered within the specified time. When I opened the pizza, 2 of them were the wrong toppings. I called back and they were very sorry about the mix up. They sent out the correct pizzas right away and even paid back the difference that I was charged for the extra toppings that I did not initally order. Now that is customer service!! I had a similar problem at Mandee's pizza in Salem a few months ago and when I called to let them know they pretty much said, what do you want me to do about it? Total disappointment. It has been a long while since I have been to Engine House. I got a chicken caesar wrap that was supposed to come with a side salad, according to the company's web site, but I was told when arriving to pick up the order that it comes with fries only. I will admit that I was offered the side salad, if I wanted it. Regretfully, I accepted the fries. I am not even sure they were "fried". They were disgusting, heavy, soggy, and mushy/soft. French fries should be cispy and light. I don't understand how someone in the kitchen can even serve those, unbelievable. The wrap was not much better, also soggy and soft. the lettuce should be light and fresh, it was wet and soggy. The overall experience was just regretful. not going back, period. read more

My boyfriend and I rarely order takeout anymore. We are very very picky and we do a lot of cooking at home because we simply can't find a good place to order out in salem. We've been let down by almost every pizza place In salem, but we hadn't tried engine house, so we decided to give it one last try. We were not let down. Ordering was easy, delivery was speedy, price was great. The pizza was tasty and the meatballs I ordered were moist and delicious, they were something I would expect out of my grandmother's kitchen. The food is good, overall, which is a bonus because chances are if you order "to-go"; when you get home you will have nothing remotely resembling what you had ordered. No exaggeration 3/5 times your order will be 100% wrong. Tonite, a turkey & cheese w/mayo & pickles magically transformed to ham, no cheese, no mayo, tomatoes and lettuce & a side salad w/blue cheese dressing..got Italian. I'm not sure if the staff is just REALLY stoned or just don't give a flying F$@K. But though the take-out food is good it's typically a disappointment. Ordered a simple meal on line, which directed me to grubhub (never used them before but figured it was the only way to order delivery with them) Food took way over one hour (2 miles away) late and everything was soggy and cold. Called the manager and all he did was yell at me that "you guys" always order online and it is my fault and ends up hanging up on me. What a terrible place this has become. I have been a Salem resident for a number of years and have been here on many occasions., and all I can ask is WHAT HAPPEND?! First the service was terrible, sorry to bother you while you do your crossword puzzle. Maybe a smile and a hello would be nice. Second, what is this you pass off as a meal. First time I ever visited Engine House it was a very busy night after the parade in Salem. I could completely understand (to an extent) how my simple order of a slice of pepperoni pizza could get lost among my friend's orders, as well as the swarm of other people's. After waiting 15 minutes and watching the rest of my group who ordered after me get their food, I asked one of the cashiers about my order. It was brought out to me momentarily, ice cold and covered in grease. I ignored it because the place was so busy and figured it was a fluke thing. Second time coming here will be the last. A friend and I showed up at 9:45 on a Tuesday looking for something quick. He got a beer and two slices of pizza (which is actually half a pizza in their book) and I ordered cheese fries. Well, I'm lucky he ordered those slices, because even though the place was virtually empty aside from us two, I waited over 20 minutes for my fries and had to ask the girl working the front about them. I made the mistake of only saying, "Hey, I ordered some fries a while ago," instead of specifying cheese fries, thinking she would remember or at least have my slip since I was the last person she took an order from. I ended up only getting plain fries. I didn't feel like causing an issue and simply left. Aside from the horrible service, the fries were good. But don't bother going here if you like competent staff who can remember your order. read more

The quality of food has declined sharply over the past couple years. What used to be a go-to spot for pizza has been drastically disappointing lately. The quality of the pizza is so inconsistent that I'm never sure if I should take the chance and place an order or try a new place. The last three times we have ordered we have been placed on hold and forgotten about, misquoted on delivery time, received cold food, received pizza that falls apart because the crust is too thin, and on and on. It's a shame because there's one cook who always makes a great pie, but we are never sure when he will be working. Carey, I think is his name. I live above this place. We order out from here often but never really go in to eat. Well, I took my daughter with me and ate in one day last week. The service was TERRIBLE! Two teenage girls jabbering the entire time about very personal topics for all the patrons to hear. The scatterbrained and "I clearly don't give a crap about my job" manager came in spouting off orders that made no sense, even to me as a customer and the employees made no effort to hide their distaste of him as soon as he left the room. A family beside me was so upset about how long their food was taking to come out that they were causing a scene. It was totally warranted! My food was to go (we had been sitting there for 15 mins) and they only brought my pizza out. I asked where the rest of my food was and was told they were out of fish (I had ordered a fish sandwich as well, plus 2 grilled cheeses and fries). They forgot to make my grilled cheese so I had to wait another 10 mins... They brought those out and then I asked where my fries were... Oh, forgot to make those as well! So after waiting another 5 mins for those, I left. The manager was out side BLOCKING TRAFFIC while he was unloading soda from the back of his beater and I complained to him. He replied that they must be having an off day and shrugged. No apologies. Nothing. He was so lousy. Literally did not care AT ALL. Well, we'll never order from there again. The last 3 times I ordered a pizza for delivery they forgot to include the side of Parmesan cheese. I tip over $5 every time too (not including their $2 delivery charge!). I called back letting them know and they never offered to deliver some or a discount for next time I order. They were barely apologetic. There are so many other places in Salem that I can order pizza from. That is literally my last time ordering delivery from engine house. I know it's just Parmesan cheese but they literally forget it every time. I don't get it... Very frustrating! read more

I'm sad to see how much Engine House Restaurant has declined. My husband and I used to eat here frequently. We enjoyed the yummy food which was priced fairly. The restaurant was always clean and busy. While visiting Salem recently, we decided to stop in. As soon as we entered, it was clearly a different experience. The floors and tables were soiled. The employees were the only ones sitting in the restaurant, and seemed annoyed at our arrival. They also looked unclean. The manager was having a loud, vulgar conversation on his cell phone at a table in the middle of the restaurant. He was a crass and unpleasant man. Sadly, my former favorite menu item, the steak tip dinner was no longer offered. Instead I ordered a slice of pizza. My husband had a ham and cheese sub, and an order of fries, and our son had a grilled cheese sandwich. We were told that they had only rye bread available for the grilled cheese sandwich, and reluctantly ordered one anyway. Our food was served to us on cheap, thin paper plates, not the actual ceramic plates that Engine House used to use. The pizza slice was disgustingly greasy and soggy. There was grease dripping down my arm as I tried to eat it. I know pizza isn't health food, but this just tasted awful. My husband's sandwich and fries were mediocre at best. My son's sandwich was also incredibly greasy. He would not eat it, and we ended up throwing it along with most of the fries in the trash where they belonged. The food was overpriced. We spent over $30 on food that was mostly inedible. I happened to visit the restroom during our visit to Engine House Restaurant. It looked to be under construction. There were various building supplies thrown around the restroom. There were no soap or paper towels at the sink. It was about as pleasant as using a port-a-potty. We were not acknowledged, thanked, or noticed by the staff other than having our food basically thrown at us. We felt like intruders on a private party as the staff continued to socialize while we dined. As we were walking to our car, I was literally chocking back vomit. I spent the ride home trying not to vomit up greasy old pizza that must've been sitting out too long. I was violently ill with food poisoning all evening. I'm thankful my son was smart enough to refuse his nasty meal. Bottom line: I will never dine here again, and I will be happy to tell anyone who asks me that Engine House Restaurant has become a trashy slum. RIP, Engine House Restaurant. read more

We had not been to Engine House for quite a while because of the rude counter help. Well, it was a very hot night - we wanted a very cold beer and just something light. We thought let's give it another try. Big Mistake! 1. Counter help was still pretty rude - my husband said if he had been ordering he would have walked out, but it was hot, had been a long day and I said to myself, the beer is always cold and the food is pretty decent. 2. Food wasn't decent. I ordered a chicken kebab wrap. The chicken tasted like it was premade - something you would get at a supermarket and there was so much dressing that that is all you could taste - I mean swimming in dressing. Also, used to have great fries - nope! 3. My husband's Greek salad was okay, although the previous management would use slices of a good feta instead of the crumbles they now use. 4. But the beer was cold. We used to love Engine House, but now we will say good-bye. Also, after talking with a friend I was told that the pizza is not so good anymore either and it was always my favorite pizza in Salem. read more
