First time checking out Epic deli after hearing about it for years. The vibe is cool and the staff are very friendly and help you choose something on the menu if you are feeling overwhelmed by their menu. I am vegetarian so I tried a sandwich that sounded weird but figured I would give it a try(the Skiba)... it was, well maybe they should retire it from the menu. The flavors did not go well with each other. I do give them major props for being adventurous! The food was okay, but the portions are crazy big with very decadent ingredients. I was a little surprised by their price point. I ordered my husband a Reuben sandwich that was $18 and that did not include a side or beverage. I totally understand that's it's rough out there for small businesses but the prices were a little shocking for a deli. We have made plenty of stops at both locations and now that we live out of town try to make one stop in when we are visiting. The sandwiches are unique and creative. There is something for everyone. I've been to the old location many times and can say that the new bigger location is much better! This is my second time at the new locale and every time, it is crowded! You have to come at the right time to beat the crowds because this place is well worth it! The choices are vast and fun! The place is well lit and clean with lots of TVs mostly on food channels. The menu on the wall is huge and intimidating but smaller menus are available to peruse. There are so many fun choices and everything you can think of is on there. The names of these sandwiches are pretty cool and I had the Wailer this time. It's a sweet sandwich that could use some sort of hot pepper to even it out. Besides the sandwiches, there are paninis, chimichangas, desserts, tons of drink choices, and some fun sides. We've been there twice. I enjoyed my panini both times. My wife very much disliked her sandwich the first time, so, following my selling her on how good my panini was, she got one the second time...and liked it even less. Hers was really soggy. My daughter really disliked her cold chicken tenders both times. My son liked his cheeseburger the first time, and wanted to go back. Here's what happened: Ordered a "cheeseburger plain" for my him. Picked up the food, and while in the parking lot, we noticed there was no cheese on it. I went back in. Me: "Hey, my son's cheeseburger didn't have cheese on it. Can you fix that?" Them: "Sir, you ordered the cheeseburger plain. See that? We made it plain." Me: "Umm, I would have ordered a plain hamburger then." Them: "We can just give you a slice of cheese, but we can't take it back. We gave you what you ordered (said while pointing at the receipt). And for future reference, plain means plain." Now, you can decide whether a "cheeseburger plain" has cheese or not. I haven't met anyone who thinks that's correct, but whatever. The condescending tone, like I was clearly an idiot...and the "we can give you a slice of cheese to put on it, but we can't take it back"? That's why the 2-stars, and why we won't be going back. If you are in Johnsburg, IL and looking for some unique cuisine, Epic Deli is the place to go. It is a restaurant that has a unique ambiance and some different decorations, but the food is so good. Epic Deli started as a small shop and became instantly famous. They out grew their original location and ended up in their current restaurant. I have had some great combinations while there. I have had a pulled pork hot dog, dorito crusted corn dogs, kool aid balls, some excellent fried pickles, and much much more. My most recent visit I had the Charlie Kelly. It combines cream cheese, sautéed apples, ham, and chicken. It was so good. Most of their sandwiches are big. I would suggest coming here with a friend, ordering one sandwich, and completing the meal by adding a side of fries, fried pickles, or something else. I have never been disappointed by Epic Deli. I love supporting this neighborhood gem! Their menu is amazing, always evolving (with impressive vegan and keto options), and the atmosphere is so homey and retro. The punk posters, pinball, and Stranger Things wall make it even cooler. Staff is always friendly and attentive. Some of my favorite dishes are the Leslie Chow (though I'd like the pork fried rice to be less mushy), Greek Fries, and The Colossus (though not for the faint of heart...or the dieting).
