I was really disappointed with our experience at San Diego Surf School. My husband and I booked a…read morebeginner surf lesson because we had never surfed before and wanted to learn the fundamentals from a professional instructor. Unfortunately, that isn't what we received. Our instructor told us he was just visiting from out of town, and it felt like he wasn't prepared or invested in teaching. To start he was late, when he did show up we received very little instruction before going into the water and were never taught many of the basic skills that beginners should learn, including proper paddling technique, how to pop up on the board, or even how to safely fall off the board. As beginners, that was especially concerning because safety should be the top priority. Once we were in the water, we were practically left on our own. Instead of receiving coaching, corrections, or guidance throughout the lesson, we were left trying to figure everything out ourselves. We paid for a surf lesson, not just a board rental. After the lesson, I reached out to the owner to explain our experience. To their credit, they responded promptly and admitted that our lesson was not taught according to their beginner curriculum. They explained that beginner lessons are supposed to include ocean safety, surf etiquette, how to safely fall, paddling technique, popping up, and active coaching throughout the lesson, all of the things we expected but didn't receive. However, the resolution they offered was only 50% off another lesson. While I appreciate the acknowledgment that our lesson fell below their standards, I don't think it's reasonable to ask customers to pay again even at a discount to receive the instruction they already paid for the first time. They also mentioned that they couldn't offer a complimentary lesson because they wanted to ensure their instructors were fairly compensated. As a customer, I believe it's just as important that clients receive the quality of service they paid for. We chose this school because of its great reputation, which made this experience even more disappointing. Hopefully this was an isolated incident, but I think future beginners should know that our experience was far from the comprehensive lesson that was advertised.

They helped us very quickly first thing in the morning even while setting up for a surf camp, gave us surf tips for locations, and made the check out process super easy. The shop has a lot of great beach essentials as well like aloe and rash guards for sale with good pricing and generous rental policies. It's a no brainer they've been in business so long. They keep the client first and surfing as the root of the experience. Don't hesitate to stop by and rent from them in this centrally located shop off the strand.

He did half day surf camp for three days. 9-12. I took the days off work to be with him and watch. They provide wetsuits, so helpful. The Surf teachers were all so attentive and I felt safe having him there. It was 4 teachers for 11 kids. I loved hearing the teachers surf lingo. And just hanging out for the mornings with the kids and surf friends. Teachers did a morning stretch and then got them out on the water. My son was catching waves right away. Mid-day they had snack break and made sure to reapply sunscreen. Last day they had a pizza party at the surf shack for all the girls and boys. Their sign about picking up a bucket of trash and getting a free coffee honestly blew my mind. Even little details like having real small towels in the bathroom instead of paper towels show how intentional they are about being eco-friendly. The coffee is also amazing! They have in-house flavors (always a plus), and I got the banana bread latte half sweet. It was so good and perfectly balanced. The setup is unique - it's more of a coffee kiosk attached to a surf shop, with a cute outdoor deck/backyard-style seating area behind it. When I went, most people were grabbing drinks to go, but there are benches where you can hang out and wait. There was a small line, but honestly it makes sense. Great coffee, meaningful values, and such a cool concept. Definitely coming back!

This location is great also because it has the most active lifeguards of all of the beaches. They patrol and guard the waters well. I have also seen them interact professionally with beach goers. There is a surfer's side on the right and a swimmer's side on the left when you walk down the ramp. The checkered flag marks the middle walkway to each side. There is a beach shower at the base of the ramp for washing off the salty water after having fun in it. There are many eateries, restaurants, grocery stores, apparel stores, and dessert places nearby within walking distance. The area is super lively and there are great vibes.

It was an 80 degree day and a Saturday, so was packed, but it still wasn't an issue to find ourselves a spot. It was hard to find a group that wasn't a family, which we welcomed seeing because we brought our 2 y/o with us. This beach is much more family friendly than some of the other area beaches. There's a paved ramp next to the bathrooms to walk down to the beach on, which was a nice surprise because we had the stroller and first thought we'd have to walk down some super steep steps. At the bottom of the ramp, they have 2 working showers to get the sand off. There were plenty of surfers and wake boarders here, but the waves were minimal, so it was mostly just a bunch of swimmers. This was our toddler's first time at the beach as a walker and he quickly warmed up it it and just wanted to sit in the low waves and slap at the water lol.
