I was quite excited to stop by Epstein's today and even more excited to see that it was packed with old farts chomping away on deli meat and soup. I heard from a few neighbors in the area that Epsteins was THE Kosher deli in the area. Since it's been around forever, I assumed there was something to that sentiment. Well, I have to say that from start to finish I was rather disappointed with my experience there. First of all, the take out order line is chaotic. There's a very small space near the display case where you're supposed to wait, and it's beyond packed with hungry people fighting for face time with the staff. While you're all jammed up there, you have to order, wait for a check, then turn 180 degrees and walk over to the register, where they you then wait and pay. Only then can you go back to the counter to get their food. Result? Complete human traffic catastrophe. Who the hell designed this system? A madman I tell you! As for the display case I mentioned..meh. All the meats in there looked old and dry, and the salads appeared to have seen better days. Nothing says delicious like egg salad with crusty dark yellow bits on top! I should also point out that they are microwaving the take out food! WTF?? Big loss of points there. I don't want microwave reheated stuff guys, I want freshly made and piping hot sandwiches and accoutrements. I was absolutely mortified when they threw my sandwich and knish in there. Totally amateurish and totally gross. Anyhoo, we got our stuff, got out of there, and within 20 minutes we had all the goods on the table. The verdict? The food was not very good. We got 3 kinds of sandwiches (brisket, corned beef, and pastrami) and each one had some significant downsides. The brisket was very bland and completely lacked seasoning, most notably salt. I felt like I was eating boiled beef. The pastrami was strongly seasoned, but not in a pleasant way; all I got when I tasted it was a ton of salt and way too much allspice, which I'm not even sure should be in pastrami. Finally, the corned beef, which was the best of the bunch, was really average at best, with a very weak level of seasoning and gummy texture. As for the sides; the microwaved knishes were OK taste wise but seemed to be sitting for a while. And the cole slaw we got was like soup, with the cabbage shreds sitting in a bath of bitter, orange-colored, and mayo-based juice. Just horrendous. I don't get the hype for this place and I definitely wont be back. Epstein's appears to be cruising on their reputation, a tactic which wont last long if they keep serving this kind of junk. Updating my review after a very good visit on April 28. Decided to order the usual bowl of kreplach soup and a turkey pastrami sandwich on club- the waitress directed me to the daily special which included a cup of soup and sandwich - the full bowl of kreplach soup was just a $1 upgrade on the special so I saved about $4 on the a la carte price of the two items. The moist sandwich included sweet peppers and came with an order of thick cut, skin-on fries that were outstanding. There seem to be some new waitresses and plenty of FOH staff so service was fine. Stick with the soups and sandwiches and you will do fine here. The soup entitles you to a free basket of bread, bagel chips and breadsticks, and everyone gets a dish of pickles. Compare that with places that are charging for bread, and give you a pickle spear, or no pickle at all with your sandwich. Hence the four stars. read more

My wife and I love Epstein's! The old school setting with the funny pictures makes for a nice atmosphere to enjoy your meals. I love their pastrami sandwiches and my wife loves their roast turkey. Hmm. Kosher restaurant open Friday night (it was before sunset). You can look at the menu, it has all the typical fare. In our group of 9, we had a wide array of items. Nothing great nothing terrible. Service is very attentive. The restaurant is in a non-descript aging strip center on the edge of White Plains. Next to a Christmas store. They do need a big cleanup. Floors and chairs were slippery and restroom needed particular attention. read more

One of the only places around here to get good Jewish Deli. They do a good job with it . Big huge sandwiches , matzoh ball soup , hot dogs , Briscuit plates , pickles , all the things you would want are here , including the Doc Brown sodas . They do catering too for the holidays . I've been pining for a good pastrami sandwich since Covid. If I'm lucky I can meet a friend at Katzs in NYC. That's not happening so we came up with this joint. Nice menu and nice service. Most of the Jewish deli favorites are here. Our reviews and soups and sandwiches were good. The free pickles were great. And for the pastrami it was very good. Doesn't match Katz's, but again nobody does. Please try to support these people in these tough times read more

Avoid the turkey, it is dry and flavorless. Whitefish salad is basically a cup of mayonnaise with smokey flavor...watery, no texture, overpriced. Coffee undrinkable. Decent matzo ball soup. As as vegetarian the obligatory meal one must eat is falafel. I was very excited to try the food. As I scour the menu I see falafel platter. My god they nailed it. The Israeli salad has cucumbers with a extra hint of vinegar and flavor. The chick peas are roasted and flavored evenly and just so that you can taste them despite being loaded with toppings. The sign for the restaurant entrance should be clearer wish I could of sat down and ate but the food is worth a shot! read more

We had stopped eating here about 18 months ago because the deli sandwiches had become lackluster. In the holiday spirit we gave it another try this past week. The matzoh ball soup and several types of knishes were tasty and perfectly prepared. The corned beef and pastrami sandwiches were dry, tasteless, not served at an appropriate temperature and the portions were underwhelming. They offer a fried chicken on the menu for $16.00. What they brought was four pieces of dried fried chicken over overdone fries. I asked the server if the chicken had been boiled prior to been fried because it was clearly not fresh. She replied: well otherwise it would take too long to cook. they charge $16.00 for it so it should be fresh in the least. the server offered to get chicken cutlets instead which they put over the same already old fries. It tasted unseasoned, it was not good and got charged for it the same as the original order. At that point I said nothing more to not bother my family. They should not offer fried chicken as it sounds so appealing but it's not at all. The two meals were disgusting. read more

This place is okay. It's nice to know there is a kosher restaurant in town serving dairy free options, but the food was meh. It has a very old school feeling in there and really nice for relaxing and having a nice meal, but the food was okay. We liked the knishes. They have a variety on nondairy flavors like spinach, potato and sweet potato. The ambience is mellow and you could probably do some work in here and be undisturbed. read more

Came here recently with Mom, Dad and the girlfriend, and as everyone in my family has severe food anxiety we were takin' a bit of a risk in coming here, but figured we'd give it a go. Immediately upon looking at the menu, my anxieties were triggered. What if my stomach explodes? What if I get food in my lungs? What if my teeth start to crumble? So many possibilities. But in the end I decided to man up and order the BBQ brisket wrap. Was afraid it was going to be a real gutbuster, but it wasn't. It had a very nice, lean feel to it and wasn't overly filling. I actually ate the whole thing. With two beers, to boot. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for my father. After eating his corned beef sandwich he started freaking out and thought he needed a splenectomy. However, after he calmed down a bit, he said he really enjoyed the sandwich. All in all, I have to say this was a good experience. Had some great sandwiches and some traditional kosher deli standards (pickles, knishes, latkes, etc.) and despite our irrational fears, we soldiered on and were no worse for the wear. read more

Regular customers who won't be going back. Noticed last time that we ate in that portions were smaller, owners didn't greet us when we arrived ( they really never did) and overall appearance is getting very tired and worn, plus no senior discounts and no veteran special on Veterans Day. The final straw was getting a salad for takeout. Smaller than when eating in and to add insult they actually charged extra for 2 small pickles that you get unlimited when eating in. A classic jewish deli/diner in the outer suburbs. You cant go wrong with the soup and sandwich lunch combo. Choose your sandwich meat, the regular cuts are all good or you can upgrade. They bring out a plate of pickles piled high with 2 different kinds. Choose from 6 different soups. Its a bowl not a cup. The matzo ball is good! You get bread, crackers and bagel chips to go with it. The meal is served with fresh cut fries, delicious! It's not Katz's but pretty damn good, especially considering you are all the way out in White Plains. You won't leave hungry, guaranteed. Service can be a little slow but they are all very friendly. My wife and I stopped in to get a couple of sandwiches to go, fIrst cut pastrami on rye with mustard was not very impressive. Meat was very dry, luke warm, barely any mustard, not very tasty and certainly not worth the money paid. We got it to go because the restaurant looked dirty and the food service area was in dire need of a good cleaning. All food in the cases did not look appetizing and old. I should have walked out! I had been in the same establishment years back and it was waaaaay better. In summary: * tasteless, dry meat * dirty, non appetizing restaurant * overpriced for food received * restaurant needs a really good cleaning and a well overdue facelift I'm confused with what others are saying because my experience was not reflective of what others have stated. This place was love at first sight. I've never been to a Jewish restaurant but I love Jewish food. My mom always made me matzo ball soup when I was little so I had to order that. I also order coleslaw wherever I go on the search for the best slaw. The coleslaw was good for a diner. Slightly sour and creamy. I like it that way. The pickles they give the table were too salty for me but I love pickles. I gave this 5 stars because of the amazing matzo ball soup. These people know how to make a good soup and matzo balls. It was the best soup I've had in a long time. The broth was chicken-y and the matzo balls were huge and filling. They also gave noodles and extra broth with the dish. Quintessential kosher delicatessen, was like stepping back in time (in a good way :-)). I love the old school ambiance right down to the waitstaff who are a bunch of Jewish grandma types (and yes they wear polyester waitress uniforms!)... Portions are ridiculous, prices are totally reasonable.. I'd say this is one of the less expensive kosher delicatessens I've been to in a long time. The food is good old stick to your ribs Jewish comfort food. This place reminds me of the original 2nd Avenue Deli when it was actually on 2nd Avenue and 10th St., when it wasn't $22 for a sandwich... Oh I digress.. Potato Latkes + Pickles + Pastrami = Perfection. I know that there's more to a good Kosher deli than these three items, but in the last 6 months I've been here 4 times, and said items are the ONLY things I ordered. The latkes are perfectly fried, and served with apple sauce (sorry, sour cream fans - dairy + meat = traif). The pastrami is the perfect balance of marbled fat to tasty meat, no gristly, fatty bits here (I'm looking at you, Katz!). And those glorious sour pickles that make your face pucker - SOOOOOOO GOOD! One of these days, I'm gonna get around to buying a quart for my private consumption. My only complaint would be that as a non-driving New Yorker, this location is a bit out of the way for us Metro-Northers, but a $10 cab ride from the White Plains station takes care of that. read more

Kosher delis are going the way of the Betamax. There has been an exponential decline in them, even in the NY metro area. Finding any deli is a challenge in Westchester. Stepping into Epstein's takes me back to my childhood. The worn laminated tables and booths, the front counter, the vested waitstaff are all straight out of a movie. The waitstaff is variable, but we are usually lucky and get good service. The food can vary too, from OK to very good. Last time we were there, we had a good meal. We got an excellent dish of sour pickles and individual dishes of cole slaw upon being seated (my family hates half sour pickles- if you ask, you can get only sour pickles). I am still sad that Dr. Brown no longer makes diet Cel-Ray soda, so I drowned my sorrow with a Bud Light. The pastrami sandwiches were uniformly excellent. There were no knishes the night we were there- they are imported from Brooklyn and it was right after hurricane Sandy. We split an order of French fries. Ordering them well done significantly improves their taste. My father ordered one of their "sloppy Joe" sandwiches- a triple decker Frankensandwich assembled with components that have no right to be on the same plate- he loved it. Overall, a solid place with a retro vibe. I'm giving it the fourth star because it's the best around. It's probably a 3.5. read more

i cant wait to go and sit inside epsteins kosher deli and enjoy some pastrami, cornbeef, hotdogs, chicken noodle soup, knishes , hot open turkey platter and more. epsteins deli in hartsdale on central ave has plenty of booths and tables so you really don't have to wait long to be seated and the servers are quick to take your order and you wont wait long for food which is fine with me as i munch on pickles and colesaw. prices are fair and the menu gives you many choices to pick which includes daily specials . soon i will be back at epsteins deli stuffing my face and the sooner the better. Over the past 5 years, I've been here 3-4 times w/my Mom and my sweetie. We are native NY-ers who grew up on this wonderful stuff. The sandwiches are plain but very big and juicy. The matzoh ball soup is so-so; not bad but not noteworthy either. The last time I was here, I had a potato knish with fried pastrami. Again, good, but not great. Maybe it's just personal taste. We have made our own pastrami & corned-beef, so we're very spoiled. Definitely worth a stop if you're cruising Central Avenue. PS. The B&W Cookies are awesome! My family and I have been going to Epstein's for years. However, it's not usually our first choice for deli food around here; more like our second. They do have great corned beef, but I've had better at other places close by. I used to like their matzo ball soup back when I was able to eat that stuff.
