I've always done my best to support locally owned businesses and since the BLM movement, I have also tried to put my $ where my mask is and also support black-owned businesses when possible. I learned this morning that it was Blackout Day 2020; a day too promote and recognize the need for capital to stay in and flow too the black community. I looked through the Yelp collection of black owned businesses and decided to finally visit Equal Minded Cafe - it's been on my list for a couple of years and sad to say I had not visited. I'm very glad I did today. The space is large and welcoming as was the barista and the owner. It breathes positive energy with it's displays of art, activism, and local flavor. My avocado toast on sourdough was creamy and crunchy and the iced latte was refreshing and large enough to keep me seated and enjoying the space for a nice respite before work. I was actually kind of hoping a letter writing campaign or a food-drive would spontaneously break-out, it's that kind of a positive energy that I was feeling! It's awesome to see such a wonderful space reinvigorating the rebirth of Troost Ave. I can't wait to go back. read more

Everything I have gotten is amazing! The Bacon & Cheddar Breakfast Bagel is one of my favorites. I also love the Turkey Havarti so much that I was half way through with it before I noticed it came with tomatoes. Normally I don't eat tomato on a sandwich but it's so good!!! Me and my girlfriend ordered to go. She got the frappe which was really good. I just got an iced coffee. I don't know what brew they used but I have never had an iced coffee that tasted like legit Budweiser. I've been sober for 4 years and right when the coffee hit my tastebuds a flood of bad memories came back. I had 4 different coworkers try it to much sure I wasn't going crazy and they all said it tasted like watered down beer. I'd be happy to come back and try again but this was the weirdest experience I've had with a coffee shop. read more

So I was running away from a community meeting and desperately needed some coffee. I happened to find this place and stopped in. Boy am I grateful for this. This is such a cool little spot. They are welcoming and warm. The owner was making coffee but was patient enough to walk me through my decision. I wanted one of everything but we settled lol. I hesitate to share this cafe because one thing I like about it is it's not overcrowded like some of the trendier places in town. The hot chocolate is delicious. Cafes specialize in coffee so many times their hot chocolate is lacking in, well, chocolate. This place has a hot chocolate with amazing flavor. Paired with an avocado toast and it's a great, quiet Saturday morning. The cafe is on the ground floor of a building that is almost like a community center. There are usually yoga, dance, or mediation classes available upstairs or in the back meeting room. I like the small town feel while still being the middle of a big city. read more

Equal Minded has it all; great coffee, ambiance, service and food. We popped in our way to hike in Swope Park and ended up chatting with the owner for a good half an hour. His heart is on Troost. He doesn't want just his shop to succeed but he wants the community to succeed. His family owns the building and they strife to fill it with tenants that want to serve the community and better it. That is reason enough to grab your coffee here but it doesn't stop with that. The coffee beans are from Broadway in KCMO and they know how to brew it here. My cafe au lait extra hot with almond milk was supreme. My husband's cold brew was some of the best he has had and not jittery feeling afterward. We got the OG Grilled Cheese with bacon and we were offered it on a bagel. It was amazing. Comes with tomato and spinach on the side as well as a pickle. Many other options available for lunch and breakfast. Grab and go drinks as well as numerous coffee additions from honey to organic sweetener and cinnamon. read more

Equal Minded Cafe is one of the best kept secrets, right in the heart of Kansas City on 43td and Troost. Their chi-tea is the best I've ever had. They make a delicious Ruben sandwich, and their heart healthy smoothies are to die for. Not to mention, the young Owner, Dontavious and his grandmother's hands-on approach with their customers, makes you feel right at home. Had my third experience at Equal Minded Cafe today. SO good! On my first visit, the barista created a caffeine and sugar-free latte for me from unsweetened almond milk and their ginger-lemongrass tea. ( I am now addicted.) Yesterday I tried the chicken and pesto sandwich on gluten- free bread (YUMMY!) and today I had the reuben (on their OTHER gluten-free bread!). As expected, it was DELICIOUS. Equal Minded popped up on a delivery app and since I haven't seen it before, I decided to give it a try. And dang and I'm glad I did!! I got the Turkey Havarti sandwich and the morning mix smoothie. The smoothie was good but what I was really blown away by was the sandwich. It was the perfect combination of great bread, tasty turkey, melted cheese and combination of mayo and mustard. Went to this place for the first time last weekend and was truly impressed. We got the pesto chicken sandwich and the Nutella/banana toast. Both were great and you can tell they're actually using good ingredients because I am super picky... Ingredients are organic and this is place is family owned which is a plus. First time here, my friends and I came in on a Friday afternoon. Not very busy, the staff was very friendly. The space is very quaint and homey. The coffee at the Elite Minded Cafe is adequate. It is very convenient to two Air B&Bs across the street. They have a food menu, but it takes a while to get to food. The owner assured us that it is not meant to be a food place. As a vegan, I really appreciated the avocado toast. The cafe is an incredible concept and definitely a decent place to grab coffee if you are in the area. read more

I love this place! Fantastic friendly service. Yummy food. And the tea! As a tea fan it can be tough finding good options. Most places dont take time to have a great selection. Or they choose a good brand, but everywhere has the same flavors. Equal Minded Cafe breaks that mold and has some incredible flavor mixes. I could honestly see myself driving out of my way to get a morning tea and a chocolate scone for breakfast. If you are a tea drinker, you gotta stop. this place is a couple blocks from my house, but they don't open until 8, so I haven't been able to catch them open. I had a day off work, and checked it out. very strange vibe, I feel like it needs more ambience, the guy working the counter was super chill, and I appreciated him telling me about the shop and etc. so the coffee I got here was iced Americano, and when I got him home it was mostly watered down browness. I love to discover new, local family owned spots. This place was a prime example. I chatted with the barista, sandwich maker extraordinaire m, and owner Dontavious about sports and whatnot. He was very friendly and courteous. Most everything on the menu looked great. He made a couple suggestions, but alas I turned to a beloved reuben sandwich. It had the perfect ratio meat to kraut to Swiss cheese to thousand Island to toasty crunchy Rye bread. Even the organic Broadway drip coffee exceeded my expectations for a late afternoon pick me up I was seeking. I enjoyed thoroughly yet casually sipping my coffee and having my half a reuben (which is nice you have the option of half vs whole) while relaxing in the cozy environment. This place does good work here and they care about the experience of their customers. Places like this are few and far between and deserve folks to think outside the Starbucks box. I'm glad I found this place on yelp and wanted others to know that it's a great spot if you're looking for a casual bite and some great coffee drinks and or tea and smoothies...Which I will be trying in the near future!! read more

In the world of cafes, Equal Minded Cafe is the kind that feels like coming home. A friendly greeting, clean tables and furniture, really good food in surprisingly big portions, a sunny place to hang out. It literally feels like visiting a neighbor's house... a neighbor you like!! I don't live or work nearby... just saw it and stopped in and am glad I did. Brought my kids in a couple days later for the avocado toast. We need more places like this!
