Alright loves, its been like a year and a half since I joined the super luxurious equinox family; there's not only been a lot of calories burned, pounds shed, and healthy habits gained but I've heard a very fair amount of 'pffffffttt!' And "wtf?! You pay how much a month?!" So I feel very obligated to update my review and well, honestly, defend my gym (aka my second home) and my pocketbook!! When I first signed up, I did so because I used to be a member at 24 -you know that crazy amazing deal you get at Costco? But I went once a month and that one time I'd be there for like an hour before either 1. I for irritated waiting for a machine. 2. I got tired of the meat market slash show off fest it became. Or 3. Realized I forgot a towel -and let's be honest, who wants to get all nasty sweaty and not shower?? Gross. Fast forward to my birthday last year, equinox just opened their fabulous downtown LA location. A friend of mine was already signed up and asked me to go check it out with her. Upon my first minute walking in, I was greeted by what felt like every person in the building. If you've read any of my reviews, you know I'm a sucker for that top notch customer service. After walking around, the biggest reason I was down to shell out that extra $, was how C L E A N everything was! I don't have the best immune system so cleanliness is a big deal to me. Equinox is pristine. Before I keep ranting how down I am for equinox and how amazing it is, I'll just bullet point it for easier reading and less eye rolling: Provided for your convenience *lockers *razors, shave cream, hairspray, hair gel, Keihls! Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, blowdryer, cotton swabs&balls, errrthang you'd find in your own bathroom pretty much. *towels (bath, face, hand. And they even have this one soaked in eucalyptus & its refrigerated!! Feels ahhhhhmazing after a great workout :) *classes (this alone is worth the $, cos you know how pricey those are alone!) The highlights: ***Pasadena equinox has hands down the best staff. End of story. *so many machines I've never had to wait. Ever. *super clean *the other members are strangely very friendly *the steam room. Sometimes I come just to sit in there! *the spa *personal trainers I'm going to stop. I'm rereading this and I sound like an advertisement haha. Just trust me and call Benson right now to schedule a walk through, hell, I'll even go with you! I've never been in such good health nor felt this amazing. If this is 626's best effort at a "luxury" gym then it speaks volumes about the area which probably has a still untapped market in elevated gym & wellness experiences/offerings. This is the dingiest EQX location and doesn't deserve the exorbitant price tag that is more than the swankier historic, renovated LA Athletic Club. It should be less than other EQXs in fact. People clearly just like it because it's the only "luxury gym" show in town (or they are paying to schmooze with others who are willing to pay more); typically mediocre commercial gyms in 626 are better than average meanwhile supposed "luxury" gyms are below. You're better off going to a commercial gym, an athletic club, or other plentiful local specialty gyms (powerlifting, bodybuilding) with better free weight equipment which 626 is lucky to have. I can't say 626 is lucky for having this particular EQX, it needs renovations. The design "efforts" are bleak and sad, outdated. The paint choice is reminiscent of any old decent commercial gym...basically compared to other EQXs, I do not feel that you get the value and worth you would expect at this particular location. Of course, if the place improves and offers any value worth the amount they want to charge, I would be glad to update my review. You'd think with the monthly fees from all members they could afford to present themselves better. Come here if you want to schmooze instead of actually workout. If you have any appreciation for decent equipment, free weights and design, as well as simply working out with contracts that are not such a fuss, go elsewhere. read more

I've been to multiple equinoxes throughout California and the US, and this one's at the bottom of the list. I was thinking about leaving the company not necessarily due to staff but cost vs benefit. You pay so much for very little. That aside when it comes to your account and managing it you can't rely on the staff here to actually handle things. I decided to downgrade to this location alone instead of the all access pass and was told that by the person over the phone that she would take care of it. Surprise! She didn't. When I called to explain and get a refund, the assistant manger wanted to know who I spoke to and when, (luckily I knew when) and wanted me to call the gym to request the refund. It's first world problem, I know, but at all the other Equinox gyms i've been to, there is normally an assistant or someone there to handle issues like this. Why is it my responsibility to get this resolved when the issue was created by your colleague. She didn't do what they said she was going to do. And to top it all off, she didn't apologize for the inconvenience. For the amount of money that I'm paying, I would expect more professionalism. read more

I have no idea how many Equinox clubs I have been to but this one is probably close to the bottom of the barrel which would include San Mateo and Union Street but it is by far the worst in SoCal. Here is why. As others have mentioned the club is totally dominated by the personal trainers. That means during a busy time, good luck getting a machine, a weight, a bench or anything else you may want to use. I mean, with my universal membership I pay plenty of money for these clubs and I want to be able to work out without a trainer with their clients taken up ungodly time doing their sets. There is no other Equinox I have been too that is this bad that way. AWFUL! What else. The club is broken down into smaller rooms and one has to move around from here to there to do what one wants. Now, I am sure they were limited by the space in a way but it is poorly put together. The men's room is a usual clean but it is tight, towels in a weird place and the water pressure is a joke! The machines I want to use are usually open and if not, I do not have to wait long. I am looking forward to when the smoothie bar is back open. Had an initial tour with Benson and he seemed very unfriendly, didn't even bother to explain anything about the facility, classes, etc since "everything was self explanatory". Had a bad attitude and rushed through everything (entire tour was 2 minutes long). Super different from other equinox reps I've met who are usually helpful and want to do their job... also seemed like he was trying to dissuade us from joining by saying it gets extremely busy. Will not be signing up or returning here ever again and don't recommend it to anybody! THE GOOD: -Clean Bathrooms & locker room, clean equipment, very clean gym! (They really clean those bathrooms all the time!) -Equipment is very well maintained compared to LA Fitness or 24 Hours. -The regular members here are way more professional VS other gyms. (my wife confirmed this as well) -The gym is considerably less crowded VS all the other gyms in Pasadena. THE BAD: -Some trainers get really butt-hurt when you turn them down for private sessions. Its rather annoying. Most will be respectful. -No pool. -As with all gyms: If your friend seems like he is training you, rather than working out with you, they will ask him to leave, even if he is a member. No training is allowed on the premise unless its from their own personal trainers. (They even went as far as saying that they find this "offensive"). I pay $167/month & $35/month for a private locker. I've tried LA Fitness, Gold Gym, 24 Hours Fitness, all for about $35/month, and this is the best gym in Pasadena. Never will you ever find a cleaner gym, with more professional members (yes, I know, $167/month is not for everyone). The unknown: -They have lots of classes. My love affair with Equinox Fitness began in 2008 when I started with a one month membership at Santa Monica from a silent auction win. I was immediately hooked on the high-end fitness classes, the clean facilities, good looking fellow club goers (was single then), the supply of towels and toiletries and blow dryers, the awesome instructors who really got my heart rate going and the Lululemon gear everyone wore. But I was also employed. And single. So once I decided to quit my job and join the ranks of the unemployed ... quitting made sense and none of the salespeople questioned me or tried haggling me to reconsider (I think they felt sorry for me more than anything) and then when I got a job and got married to a student, well.... the $150/month membership (I had a corporate discount) just wasn't making the priority list. Oh how I missed Equinox and dreamed of the days I could go back. Oh how I snubbed my nose at the hoards of dirty gyms I instead had to slum it at. Oh how I longed for returning to Equinox. Fast forward to post-partum (had my first baby), still wanting to lose 10 more pounds and not having much time to do it with my at home DVD exercise collection, my mom gave me a year's worth of membership at Equinox and I was thrilled. Ecstatic. So I was all set, ready to go with my 3 month baby (have to be 3 months before you can go) and I find out you have to pay for kids club. You have to PAY?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! And more importantly, why did not one salesperson cover this when I inquired about the minimum age requirement? Because they work on sales commissions. You have just died in my heart Equinox. I am outraged. Now I can only think of the cons - parking is only validated for 90 minutes (hint - go to Macy's for 120 minutes, yeah it's a walk), the classes are overcrowded, apparently the "fee keeps it exclusive" is a lie with all the overabundance of members these days in the first and tiny location that is Pasadena, the "free" personal work out sessions are not free, they hassle you about signing on for more sessions (because the personal trainers are under really tight sales quotas). The upside is, the bathrooms are still clean (if I ever get a chance to go... wait no, I have to run home to my child right after a class so I barely get to wipe down before rushing off), the instructors are still amazing, and .... all out. Used to belong to the one in South Bay- actually bought membership BEFORE it opened and was still being built! SoI wanted to check this one out. I eventually joined, because I do love the whole EQ concept, I love the classes! I love how I can symbiotically run the iCal, website, stats and other goodies together. I love the people that go there! Great smoothies from Michael at the cafe! I'll preface things by saying that this is a review of the Equinox franchise in general, but also this specific Pasadena location. Even tho I live on the west side (aka the best side) and have 2 EQ branches within 15 min drive from my home, I consider the Pasadena branch my 'home base' of fitness because I'm constantly doing my sessions after work in the east LA area so I spend on average 3-4 days a week here. I'll start off by saying this is one of the smallest of the EQ branches occupying only 1 floor in its rented space at the Colorado Paseo Mall in old town Pas. This is nice because theres no nonsense going to different floors to do weights, aerobics, classes, machines, etc. However this relative shortage of space means fewer machines in my mind. Another thing that bothers me is that the common workout area never seems to have enough ventilation and A/C running, as it always seems to run a bit on the stuffy side, especially when you're using the aerobics machines. Treadmills and ellipticals are decent but not state of the art, even my old LA Fitness branch had treadmills with built in personal fans. Free weight section is intermixed with various weight machines and somewhat scattered into separate sections which is good and bad. Luckily since the gym never gets too crowded most of what you need is available with litle to no weight. Fans of spinning class will have to reserve their spots online as the classes fill up fast and I believe they dont take walk ons, so be on your toes. My biggest dissapointment is the men's locker rooms, while reasonable clean, this seems to have the fewest lockers of all the branches I've been to and theres no 'chill out' area with a sofa and tv which I love at the other locations. It's nice to cool down after a workout before or after hitting the showers. Parking is validated up to 2 hrs which is usually plenty of time for most ppl, and parking access is shared with the Paseo mall customers. I advise those to park in the accessory structure across the street from the gym, it usually has much more parking with less hassle. read more

I was a member at this gym for over a year, I would often come at night or on the weekend. I didn't do classes or personal training so i can't speak to that. I never loved the location or layout of this gym, the parking is kind of annoying and I didn't love the layout of the gym compared to other Equinoxs like westlake village which is two stories and wide open. I didn't love the energy at this gym either, not very many people at night which you may prefer. I also had an issue with being over billed and did not see eye to eye with the Pasadena management. Ultimately corporate made it right. However, I am not surprised to see many one star reviews and the management not reaching out to respond. Overall, for the money, this gym is not on par with other Equinoxs but does have some nice equipment and is very clean. May be only high end gym option in Pasadena? read more

Hands down the fanciest gym I've ever been to. All their equipment and machines are just slightly better than the ones you would see at 24 hour fitness. But it all comes down to one thing, is it worth the money? Probably not for me. Maybe when my money tree in the backyard is full grown, perhaps I'll make some serious considerations. This is a long overdue review of this incredible gym that has given me a whole new love for fitness! My husband and I became members here in August 2015. Even though I have always been a fit and active person, never have I thought I would learn so much from the amazing and knowledgable instructors and trainers at Equinox. My favorite classes are yoga, kettlebells, and VIPR as they all complement my pole dancing training. I've also done a few sessions with a personal trainer which I really enjoyed. Their instructors and trainers are seriously top notch and the best of the best in the industry. I really can't stress enough how important that is when deciding on a gym. Their Kids Club is also great and my daughter loves going there .. I can never get her to leave! Knowing that she is in great hands when I workout gives me peace of mind that I can spend a few hours focusing on myself :) If you are serious about fitness and pushing yourself to be the best that you can be, then Equinox would be a great fit for you! read more

So it's been a few months since I've joined and I wanted to give you an update. I still love this gym and the classes are great. Some with varying degrees of instructors (meaning, I like some of the styles of spin instructors, some have better methods, some have better music, some have the same music, etc etc). For the most part, I can get in any class for the spinning (there are always a space even if you cant book a bike online, there are some last min cancellations, but it does fill up quickly). Same with the group classes. Especially the cardio/dance studio (the one in the front) gets a little packed. So far I've done the Tread n' Shred, Abs (with the Vipr), Spinning, Yoga, Mat Pilates and some personal trainning and I still love this gym. I was thinking, most places with monthly unlimited Yoga or unlimited spin all are over $135 a month easily and I really wanted to have variety in my workouts so I still feel that this is a better deal. Plus, since Im paying for it anyways, it makes me want to go more often. Therefore, I must say, I am in the best shape in my life...ever. oh and the update on the parking, you can actually stay for 2 hours, not just 90 min, for free. Otherwise, its a $1.50 per extra half hour. read more

This place is shit. We bought 24 personal training classes right away. And guess what? They get us a Tier 3 trainer rather than what we paid for is a Tier 3+. (Which is 270 dollars difference.)And they didn't gave us the 2 free session as they promised. And they sneaky charge us more for the classes we called canceled. Which we paid 300 dollars for nothing. And they are not even so professional at personal training. Didn't do a in body230 program as they promised. Didn't do a nutrition plan as they promised. I've been to many equinox clubs since I selected "all access to every location" plan. Clubs in LA and Orange County is super clean. The PASADENA club has really great classes with very passionate instructors. However the manager and personal trainer are shit business man. They have totally different attitude before and after u purchase training classes. Jus remember to avoid them, you will enjoy enquinox. read more

I also love that there are seperate studios for yoga, pilates, and spin. Although pasadena equinox feels a bit old and can use some remodeling, i enjoy going. I literally do not understand why some of these reviews are so bad. I love this gym. Nobody can compare any gym to this one. You're telling me that 24 hour fitness is better because it's cheaper? It's cheaper for a reason. This gym is never busy after work. I show up at 5pm and there's 20 people at the gym. If you show up at 24 hour fitness at 5pm, the whole city of Pasadena will be there. There is no comparison. The money you pay is 1000% worth it. The app allows you to save classes to your schedule and as soon as the class is open to reserve, you can sign up for them. Yea if you wait last minute, you'll probably not be able to sign up. For the most part everyone reracks their weights and clean their chairs/equipment after use. It's just a different crowd. Literally no one does that at any other gym. So for that... 5 stars. read more

I signed up in May and immediately Benson gave me a tour of the gym. The gym is relatively small but clean. Front desk was always friendly and greeted everyone warmly. Shower has a full set of Kiehl's products which was very nice. There are not many types of machines to use, especially since personal training sessions took over a few of the machines. It could be understandable, after all, they paid more. I also referred a friend to the gym and she successfully joined with the help of another sales executive Madison a couple months later. Today is my last day at the gym. My membership ends this month. Finally, this journey can be finished. I had no motivation to keep coming to work out since late September. However, my company gives employees incentive for fitness activities and I had prepaid my membership for October, that's why my last date was not earlier. Here are the reasons - As my previous yelp review said, I did not have a good complimentary training experience with Personal Training Manager as half of the session turned into a sales process trying to convince me to sign up with a trainer 2 to 3 times a week. I spent some time observing how other trainers worked with clients and tried to find someone who can customize the session based on my needs. A few weeks later, I met with Ryan Brock when he was doing an event. He seemed very friendly and explained to me some misconceptions about weight loss. After I mentioned my prior personal training experience, he offered me a consulting session. After my consulting session, Ryan Brock promised that he would customize my session as I needed. He would also send me notes of the activities we do during the sessions, as well as any videos, tips or even research papers. He also promised that I would have 24/7 access to him for any questions I might have. That was the last time I saw him smile. He also mentioned he was new to the gym and only had 4 clients at that time. I bought a 12 session package immediately after the session. The first two sessions did not meet my expectations. They were loosely organized. I got no notes afterwards. I thought it would take time for us to get to know each other. I personally did not like trainers who always showed up with a cold face, but I understood maybe he had a long day. When the manager, Paul followed up with me, I had no complaints because I wanted to give it a chance - even though I was never able to ask any training questions as was promised. I had two other sessions afterwards. On 9/23, I ran into Ryan Brock. I tried to ask for help adjusting a bike seat. He kept looking at his phone ignoring me and showed me a cold-looking face. He lied to me that he had a client coming in a few minutes and made me wait there for 5 minutes. After a few minutes, I got a calendar notification that my remaining 8 sessions were cancelled. I texted him asking why and was told 'Just moving some things around on the schedule and it reset my week. Will be adding all the sessions back shortly'. On 9/24, I texted again asking if he would add them back. I was told 'Correct'. By then, I wanted to change to another trainer. Everyone else in the gym was friendly and helpful and showed common courtesy. His attitude did not make me feel comfortable. Though I thought about it, I did not communicate my thoughts to any staff member at the gym out of the respect to Ryan Brock. A couple days later, on 9/26, I got a call from the manager telling me he was going to assign another trainer to me. Obviously, Ryan Brock lied to me. Maybe I am Asian, maybe I speak with accent, maybe he does not like my color, maybe now he has enough clients. After that, I ran into him in the gym and he pretended to not see me rolled his eyes at me. A couple other members witnessed the entire thing and they were shocked by how I was treated. I could not believe any service business will allow clients to be treated so carelessly. I was traumatized by his attitude, his unprofessionalism and his racist reactions. I always thought personal trainers are supposed to add value to the gym but I now realized I was wrong. The manager Paul listened to my side of the story and we were able to come to a resolution. Unfortunately, I no longer wanted to work out at this gym because of this tainted experience. There are some great people working there and I wish them all the best! read more

Equinox Pasadena is by far the worst Equinox. First of all, it is small with the classes in a small room with two beams smack in the middle of the gym. The classes get full with the SAME people who SAVE spots for their friends. It's the only Equinox that allows this behavior. I feel like I am in high school with these mostly middle aged mothers that can't mind their own business. One instructor in particular which shall not be named/C rules Devin. He can get mad at members, let people save spots, have favorites, blatantly has unfavorites, make his own rules and stays forever in the room after his class so that the cleaners can't get in to clean. As far as the gym itself, the machines are outdated. Why not have treadmills with their own tv monitors instead of those monstrosities overhead? They are making so much money with over filling membership but do not update the machines. Where is the money going? The showers are grungy & slimy & always full. It's also the dirtiest Equinox. I think Equinox Pasadena needs an overhaul of new management that will constructively listen to critique instead of get offended. read more

The amenities are good, overall the gym is extremely crowded. After you sign up, they give you "free" training sessions which are short for a sales pitch. They charged me for one of the sessions and I caught it on my card, otherwise, I would have paid for it. I personally don't think this gym is worth the cost at all. After 7 months, this finally has been taken care of... once it got to the attention of the right person via this posting. The pasadena club is beautiful and sparkling clean. The group class and yoga instruction is top notch. I always enjoyed my time there. Average Equinox compared to other locations. The space in general is kind of small, especially the group fitness room. I took a 10 AM class that was almost completely packed, but there weren't that many people there. The amenities are all there, which is nice, but the lockers aren't digitalized. The locker rooms are not dirty, but they're not spotless, either. Definitely don't want to examine the shower drain too closely. I wish they had an Earth Bar at the front! I think the juice bar they have is local, but there weren't many choices, nutrition facts, etc which steered me away from ordering. read more

Ever wonder what would happen if you took someone who lives in the jungles of a developing country; who has never had contact with the outside world; who has to forage and hunt for their own food, and dropped them down in the middle of a Las Vegas buffet? Well I know what would happen, because it happened to me this morning. When I arrived at Bally Total Fail this morning for my workout they had not opened yet. Yep, it was 9:30am and they were supposed to open at 8:00am. I was one of many gym members waiting like an angry mob for someone to arrive. Well, someone did arrive but it wasn't a Ballys employee, it was Melissa an employee from Equinox across the street who came to take us out of the third world and let us eat at a buffet. Melissa told us we could all go and work out at Equinox for free, no strings attached, instead of waiting out in the street for our gym to open. I immediately said yes...actually I said Hell yes. Vegas here I come!!! We got to the gym, filled out a waiver, and were indeed allowed to workout free of charge and free of any sales pitch. This was just a bit of genuine kindness offered by Melissa and the staff at Equinox. The gym is pristine...i think germs wouldn't even dare grow here because it just wouldn't be a cool thing to do. The equipment is awesome and it was all in operational condition. They even have a little refrigerator with eucalyptus scented cold towels. The staff were all very nice and very professional. Oh yes, to one who works out in the developing country that is Bally Total Fitness, this is the Las Vegas buffet of gyms. The entire experience was amazing. Thank you Melissa and everyone at Equinox for giving me a great workout experience and a huge case of gym envy. Now that I have dined at the Las Vegas buffet how can I go back to the jungle where I have to kill my own food? I am working out the math and I figure if I sell all of my worldly possessions along with my right kidney I will be able to join Equinox...for now I will just have to go back to the third world of Ballys and sharpen my spear. read more

After having been a member here on and off for several years I had to put a hold on my membership for a temporary move. Apparently, they don't like this. I was told that I had to quit and sign up upon my return. Okay, so I quit, but they kept taking my monthly dues out of my account and when I complained the manager said that he would take care of it. After that it continued and they stopped taking my calls. I went in in person and again they said that it would be taken care of. Well, it never was. They ended up with my money and I got nothing. Researching it a bit I have found that this is common practice and that there are many others out there like me. BEWARE SHADY TRADE PRACTICES LIKE THESE. I was a member of this Equinox for over three years. It was great at the beginning and I liked my trainer at first. But over time, the gym seemed to lose it's appeal and the trainer became a liability instead of an asset. First the gym itself. The gym prides itself on being clean. Well, I noticed on many occasions that it was lacking in its cleanliness. One time there was feces in the steam room. That is absolutely unacceptable! The membership is around $120/mo and you find filth. Absolutely ridiculous. Now on to the personal training. It really needs work. My trainer was good at the beginning but over time she became way too comfortable with me. I'm her client, not her friend. I am paying her good money to help me get in shape. She took advantage of my kindness over and over. She would cancel on me because she didn't want to wake up early even though our morning appointment would be for 8am. She would force me to do things that would hurt me. When I told her my shoulder wouldn't let me raise my arm, she told me to push through it. Now I am left with chronic tendinitis in my shoulder. If she would have listened to me and adjusted the exercise, I wouldn't be injured indefinitely. I now go to Gold's Gym and it's just as nice as Equinox at a fraction of the cost. $30/mo and you get everything plus more than Equinox. You can't beat that. read more

This review is waaaay overdue! I've been a member of Equinox on and off since 2006, and can hands down say that I don't see myself ever being a member of another gym. Although this is the oldest location on the west coast, this is my favorite, and what I call home. It may not be as nice compared to newer locations, but the members, trainers, and staff make up for it. After leaving Equinox from 2013-16, I gained a lot of weight and fell off track. I needed a change and reflected on what brought me happiness. Honestly, my first thought was that I missed being a member at Equinox. I joined again last year in DTLA, and haven't looked back. Yes, it can be pricey at $235/month for an all-access membership, but if you come often and take advantage of the unlimited classes, it is well worth it! You can also check with your company if you qualify for a corporate rate. Pros: Very clean Never too crowded Awesome classes/instructors Friendly members Eucalyptus towels Khiels products Easy parking Guest passes Referral credit Special events Booking via the EQ app Cons: Wish they validated for more than 2 hours! Where do I start? I'm not a member but I wanted to give it a shot since I live and work across the street from this location. Pros: 1. Kheils products 2. Usually very clean 3. Towel service 4. Machines always Available Cons: 1. See detailed notes 2. $150 a month, first and last and I believe initiation. 3. 1 year contract and the price increased every year but they do not print a % or amount, in the event they need to raise it more... (Wtf) 4. Staff: see notes 5. No spa/pool Staff: 1. If you walk in and sit at the tables, don't be surprised to see staff also lounging out front and giving you a dirty and unwelcoming look. 2. Once they realize you are "potentially" going to sign up they change their attitude. 3. They aren't fans of people that are really fans of non- business professionals or "rig raf" like the ones at "other gyms" (whatever that is supposed to mean). 4. Cliques and this includes members/trainers Overall it's a nice looking gym but the fact that I was being sold based on how Equinox clients are business professional, doctors, lawyers.... Didn't sit well with me. I workout at Foothill Gym and Golds and there are many professionals in both locations. Again, nice gym but the sales technique did not do it for me. $150 can buy me some more personal training sessions at my "rif-raf" gyms. Make your own decision though. read more

I've been a member since March 2012, and am very pleased. My background, and why I feel like my say-so is worth something: I played football in HS and rugby in HS and college and know my way around a gym. I was members at Golds, the La Athletic Club, LA Fitness, and 24 Hour before Equinox, in that order. This is the first place I've liked. Basically most peoples' gripe w/ Equinox, if they have one, is the cost. So it's $90 more than 24 Hour Fitness. Granted, that is a significant cost to pay for a gym. But its worth it. Taking a look at gym experiences. Walking in: At a normal gym, you walk in and enter your code number while a receptionist (maybe) looks at you and (rarely) says hello. Basically no personal service. At Equinox you are greeted by a friendly and smiling member of the staff whom you see on a daily basis. They scan your card and greet you by name, then validate your parking rather than making you do it. Locker Room: At a normal gym, you pry open the bent frame of blue or grey sheet metal lockers. An elderly fellow sits naked on a bench and scopes you as you change. You're pretty sure he's been there doing the exact same thing for hours. You've never seen him working out. You go to wash your hands and they sinks are messy and water is all over the counters. You get out as quickly as possible. At Equinox you go in and are greeted by lovely wood-finished lockers. The people in the locker rooms are polite and there are very few creepers. You wash your hands in beautiful basin sinks. Every time you've ever been in the locker room, there is a staff member cleaning something. Cardio Time! At a normal gym, you go to the Cardio Deck, but...oh shoot...all the good machines are full. That's because they only have 3 Precors! And everyone wants them! One's broken! And they have 20 minute limits (REALLLY!?!) And that broken one? It never gets fixed. You take a second, or third, choice cardio machine and are sad. At Equinox, you have your choice of two areas. The machines are only maybe ever full at the peakest of peak hours. Generally, you can always get the machine type you want. In 9 months, I've yet to have to wait for a machine. You cardio your butt off, get a sweat going, and are happy. Lifting Time: At a normal gym, this is generally the best part. The major drawbacks are the fact you'll eventually see a jerk wearing jeans, too many people in hats, and tons of Affliction and Tap Out gear. At Equinox: YAY! NO TAP OUT OR AFFLICTION MEAT-HEAD IDIOTS! Shower Time: At a normal gym, this part is horrifying. The showers are decrepit and have Lyme build up. The floor fills you with terror at meningitis. The same creeper who was scoping you keeps walking past the open showers, still naked. Most times its better to go home and shower. Makes it really a pain to go before work. Hope you brought a towel. At Equinox, beautiful private frosted glass showers await you. The floors are nice and smooth. The shower floors have a wood-synthetic insert thing that drys very quickly so you can usually find a dry one except at peak hours. Cozy. Clean. Time to shave. Forget your shaving cream? No worries! its supplied! Forget your razor!? No worries! Disposables! High quality hair dryers. Hair gel (though honestly, that is crummy...bring your own). Towels, both large and small in abundance and always stocked. You leave cleaner than when you came in. You feel good and you had a great workout. The staff says goodbye as you walk out the door, and you're glad you came. A couple drawbacks: No pool. I wish they were open 30 minutes later on Fridays (close at 9:00). They don't have a seated dip machine...which is aggravating. Should you join Equinox? If you want your gym experience to be enjoyable, clean, friendly, courteous, and productive, then yes. If you want a little bit more than just a business like gym day, then yes. If you are not picky at all, and just want to pump iron? Go to Golds. read more

I joined one year ago and plan to leave. The personal training is wildly expensive. The facilities are mediocre for a "high end" gym. The group fitness room is small/crowded. Spin facilities are great, however the prime time classes are often booked. For me, "high end" needs to include convenient and spacious...oh well. High point was studying Pilates with Lydia Ho...excellent instructor. After my son and I spent *considerable* $$ on private Pilates lessons, the gym management decided not to let my son out of his contract 2-3 months early (despite moving away for college). Perfect example of not seeing the "big picture". Unfortunately, this club cares more about contracts than accommodating unique circumstances. Not surprised club management changes often... Sad this great location doesn't measure up to other high-end gyms I'm familiar with in Northern California (ClubOne in San Jose, Bay Club in Cupertino, etc.). read more

Let me be honest here, I am not a huge fan of gyms although I am a huge fan of being active. I am also not a paid member of equinox but was able to preview a pilates class yesterday evening. Here's what I concluded: 1) Location - having to find parking every time you go to the gym at Paseo is not very desirable. Also, if you have no self control, walking through the mall to go to the gym with all sorts of yummy temptations and window shopping distractions is also not ideal. 2) Clean and up to date machinery and equipment - they get 2 thumbs up for this. 3) Awkward stares and snobbery - at least yesterday this definitely was the case. Why do people stare at the gym? That is about 80% of why I would never pay for a membership, I'm not trying to race you on the elliptical machine, Buddy...sorry. 4) Saving grace - the pilates class taught by Pearl, kicked my behind into shape. I have taken several pilates classes but this one hour class hit every part of the body and incorporated a lot of fun little pilates props into the class (rings, discs, and resistance bands). read more

This place is like a blood sucking machine who sucks out all the cash from your bank account. I mean I dont mind paying a slighly higher price for a better environment, equipment and service. However, this place raise their dues every year. And Now, they are raising the dues yet again from 128 a month to 183 a month. They think they can do that now because they bought all three Sports Club LA down here in Southern CA, well guess what, I am quitting the gym, going to try out Breakthru Fitness. bye bye blood sucker!! read more

I have been going to this gym for about 5 months now and although my general thoughts on this gym is generally positive, there are certain aspects that I want to point out. Firstly, you will be, and trust me despite what others say, paying far more at this gym than any other gym in the area. That goes to say that this gym also offers far more features than other gyms, it is ridiculous to look at other commenters and see them complain the price and that "everything should be perfect because I pay $$$$" Sure! It is more than 24, but it doesn't mean Equinox needs to cater to every little tiny need you have. Get over it! Anyways, besides that little rant, this gym is extremely clean whenever I go. Never have I ever looked at a machine and said "gross" to myself, unlike when I went to my prior gyms. Equinox also has less people, making it WAY easier for you to get the machine you are looking for. Also, not to sound rude but the crowd is also, in a sense, "better" only because I think the cheaper gyms might bring in the wrong crowd that think it's okay to leave a machine all gross, and to harass other gym goers. I'm really hoping I'm not sounding uptight, but because of Equinox's price, the members tend to take care of the machines better and give you your space. All of the classes they offer are great. The crowd size is on the smaller end, which can be better or worse depending on the person. I will say the personal trainers are pretty ridiculously priced, but you do get the flexibility to meet with your trainer at YOUR gym so that's cool. The one reason I am knocking it down a star is merely because there are cliques at this gym which is what I was afraid of. I may or not renew my membership when the year comes around, but for now I am happy with my product. Really am not blaming equinox for the cliques, I don't see how they can really do anything about it, except for the trainers for the classes that create that atmosphere, but I don't partake in the classes as much as others. Just sucks to see new members coming in and they don't seem very welcomed, and they look like they have a difficult time adjusting. Maybe the staff can do something with that.
