I love the vibes of this place, from the festive environment to the very friendly staff. Not sure about the story behind it, but it feels like a family operation and who doesn't love that? I came here with my father and cousin on a Saturday night and the place was pleasantly busy, but we were able to find parking and a table. I don't like to say "plenty of tables" to indicate it was empty. We got there super early, like 6pm and by the time we left, it was busier. I'd eaten a late lunch and wasn't particularly hungry, so I just ordered some tableside guac. My cousin can't handle spice at all (annoying. I say this with love. She's 22 so she has time to grow into it), so when asked about spice level, I sadly replied the dreaded "mild." You know what? It was still really freaking good. I suspect quality ingredients are at play. I also had a glass or two of white wine and these are generous pours, friends. The menu is priced extremely fairly in these tough times. There's not many vegan options on the menu (plenty of vegetarian) however I'm pretty sure I can cobble something decent together when I return. And I say that with certainty because my father had been here only two weeks prior and couldn't stop talking about the tortilla soup, which ordered and devoured again. He's not easy to please either. Cold, silent, and forgotten--but at least the soup had soul." I wanted to love Escorzas. My fiancé and I used to recommend it to friends and family. But after this past Sunday's visit, that chapter is closed. Let's start with the positives, because they exist. The tortilla soup was genuinely very good--rich, comforting, properly garnished. And the steamed clams? Surprisingly good, fresh and briny in a light broth and with white beans that hinted at real care in the kitchen. If the meal had ended there, I might have walked away conflicted rather than angry. But the rest was a masterclass in neglect. We arrived at 1:30 pm--an hour and a half after opening--and found the place completely empty. No music. No warmth, literally: it was freezing inside. The bartender doubled as host, and once he realized we weren't ordering cocktails, his interest evaporated. No greeting beyond the bare minimum. Nothing. Twenty minutes later, another group walked in. They were seated at the bar. Suddenly, miraculously, the music came on. And their food arrived before ours, even though we had ordered well ahead. Our appetizers? A long, silent wait. The free tortillas that came out initially were never refreshed, even as we sat hungry while waiting. No water refills. No offer of hot sauce. No check-in, no smile, no "how's everything?"--just the sound of our own frustration echoing off the empty walls. When the fajitas finally appeared (late, with no sense of urgency), they were fine--but by then, we had stopped caring. We ate quickly, paid our $70+ bill, and I reluctantly left a $10 tip, which felt more like charity than gratitude. To add insult to injury, we forgot our doggy bag with leftover steak and veggies from the fajitas. I'm not sure the staff would have noticed or cared if we'd left a suitcase behind. My fiancé has officially crossed Escorzas off her favorites list. So have I. A kitchen that turns out good soup and clams deserves a front-of-house team that matches that effort. Instead, we got silence, cold air, and the unmistakable feeling that we were invisible--until it was time to pay. Verdict: Come for the tortilla soup. Leave before you order anything else. Their food is good! The drinks are good! - it's such a shame I have to write this and will likely never go again. I ordered on a Sunday night and for once was well ahead of time and placed it at approx 7 pm for 8:45 pickup from a county away. The site says open until ten. At 8:35 they cancelled the order and left me scrambling for food open on a Sunday at this time, which is slim Pickens. I understand things happen but no real explanation was given and I'm left with fast food options and I wish they let me know at an appropriately sooner time than moments before pickup. I will likely never be back and it's a shame. They lost a good customer today and I will be looking for food closer to home that isn't so quick to just shoo a big order away from a good returning customer. Very very disappointed. read more

Great Mexican restaurant and all around dining experience. I went here with some family for dinner over the weekend. When we walked in the dining room was packed, there were people sitting at the bar up front, and there was a band playing in the front by the entrance. The band played all night long - from the moment we walked in, and they were going strong while we were leaving hours later. We didn't have a reservation but we might've got lucky, it's probably best to make a reservation for a weekend dinner. The ambiance was exactly what I was expecting, a beautifully painted and laid out space, with decorations on the walls. The energy was high throughout the restaurant - every table was having a good time. The owner is always around and checking on guests. The food and drinks could not have been better. They have a full collection of signature margaritas, mojitos, and other cocktails. We got a ton of food for the table and picked at every plate. Every single dish that landed on the table was delicious and flavorful. I recommend the mixed ceviche and the tostones caribeños as appetizers. For entrees we had the mocaljete, shrimp mazatlan, enchiladas, and shrimp a la diabla. Delicious, big but not giant entree portions. And of course you can't forget about the flan for dessert. Have been here twice so far. For starters we had guacamole and queso fundido. I really liked the guacamole but didn't love the queso. I will not order that again. The place is cute. The food was very good. The ending was awful. A few friends took me and another friend out to dinner for our birthdays. Our seats had a Mylar birthday balloon tied to them, so it was clearly a celebration. After clearing our dinner plates, the staff came over, put sombreros on our heads, and brought out a platter with flan, churro pieces, whipped cream, two shots of tequila, and sparkler candles. Everyone sang happy birthday. It was festive, but none of us had asked for any of it. In fact, there had not even been time to discuss dessert. When the bill came, we were shocked to see a charge for all of it. We asked about the charge and were told, "That is what we do. We do it all the time." When we pushed back, they said, "Well you ate it!" Yes, we ate some of it, but it had been placed in the middle of the table without any warning or option to decline. I explained that when something is brought without being requested, it feels like chips and salsa or bread service, a nice touch for the customer. Then the waiter said, "What is the matter, can't you pay for two pieces of cake?" At that point I was irate. I said, "You did not just say that to a customer." We had asked for a manager, but no one ever came. Eventually, they did remove the charge, but the whole experience left a bad taste in our mouths. The taco options weren't mix and match which would be cool. The passion fruit mojito was decent. Chips and salsa was decent. The tacos were really good. I ordered the California tacos but substituted shrimp instead of the chicken. We were charged an extra 2 $ for that which wasn't a big deal but they should just offer the tacos with your choice of protein. That would solve that issue pretty easily. I was excited for the rice and beans but the rice was obviously old and not hot and fresh. It wasn't even slightly warm. The beans were decent but had some cheese on top of it that didn't even melt slightly .... Because the beans were also cold. I just wish there was a little more attention to details like that. Overall, decent. Not running to come back but it wasn't a bad dinner. The drinks and chips and salsa could have been better. Little things could have been warmed and that would have elevated the experience but the tacos (which I came for) were pretty good. read more

We went there last night after a meeting so we weren't eating until about 9:00. There were several tables of people and most seem to be enjoying drinks with their dinner. I ordered chicken fajitas without peppers. My food was very good. There was plenty of chicken and lots of onions. It came with rice and beans which were also good. My little side dishes were sour cream and guacamole. The tortillas were fine but I felt that I was missing the cheese that usually comes with fajitas. What stopped me from giving it another star was the service. The waiter came over to us immediately to take our drink orders. When we said all we were happy with water, he walked away. He came back a couple minutes later and took our orders. He brought our food in a timely matter. But it was more of an effort to get him to our table to refill our water, bring us to go containers, and our check. Meanwhile he was all over the tables who were drinking. Recent Friday night, went with some friends. Mexican joint in strip shopping center on Merrick Road. Place was loud, had a small band playing, and most guest seem to be having a good time. I guess I'm spoiled living in Atlanta for so long and taking for granted the Mexican food there was so great. I've yet to find something comparable on LI. This place is good not great. Food is good service is just ok. There are a lot of Mexican places in the area so I feel like they need to go above and beyond to be considered any better than good. They are well staffed however our waitress kind of gave up by the end of the meal. My second margarita was forgotten about until we had the check. She did offer it to us at no charge to go which was nice but I wanted to drink it at the table not in the car. I ordered a "side" of tortillas as extras to take home with my fajita leftovers, she specifically asked me if I wanted flour or corn tortillas, I said flour and she gave me corn. We asked for mild guac table side and it was pretty spicy. These all may be petty things but it was enough for me to consider it a 3 star restaurant instead of 4 star. They had a "band" that was just ok. Volume was fine if you sit in the back of the restaurant but the singing wasn't anything I'd go back for. Not very good but not even enough to dip a chip into as you literally chased it across the table. My wife and I had Mole Enchiladas, chicken and beef. Chicken was not edible! So over cooked it was like Lester rocks. Black beans undercut by a lot! Awful!!! Our daughter had chicken flautas, equally overcooked, but with an extra accompaniment of long black hair! If you're hungry and need a place to sit yet enjoy the night, this is it! Its very loud with the live music they have, so its not suited for people who would like a quiet evening. But the ambiance is fun & the drinks help kick it into gear quick! I had a cosmoquila and it was STRONG (I have a high tolerance and it wore off after an hr but a few of those would've had me flying LOL). The food was not amazing but not horrible, just your standard American-Mexican food. It wasn't long to wait for it & came out well-prepared w. nothing amiss or cold or anything. Our server was very nice, checked up on us multiple times and was patient. The bill wasn't crazy high, standard for NY pricing! Unfortunately, the ladies restroom was not cleanly. The trash was overflowing with toilet paper and there was some on the floor (at least it didn't smell though!!) For a Friday night, the 3 of us girls waited about 20 mins for a table, which is very good considering the other places we looked at were about 40 mins-1 hr!!! Haven't been here since the pandemic started. Today first time back was really excited to order for pick up. Got home and what a disappointment. The tortilla soup - what I got was a container of the red enchilada sauce no chicken or tortilla in it. On the side I was given some crispy tortilla sticks, avocado, crema and cheese. Upon arrival our table was ready and there were balloons everywhere. We were told that they were celebrating their 7th anniversary and they had drink specials for $7. The margaritas were very well made. We had guacamole made table side and it was delicious. Our entrees were also spectacular, from the steak and shrimp fajitas to the shrimp tacos to the seafood a la Diabla. And the hot sauce was truly hot. For desert it was a yummy churro and coffee. The four of us really enjoyed the night. As we were leaving the live music was about to start. Next time we arrive later. And there will definitely be many next times. read more
