On Monday night, 5:30PM it was relatively quiet, but with tables too closely spaced, it soon became hard to converse as more people arrived.Food was good, especially the French onion soup, as well as the duck breast with duck sausage, trumpet mushrooms and well cooked asparagus.The escargot were o.k., not garlicky enough, and the toasted bread with it just plain wrong, and hard. Need to have nice, soft bread to soak up the sauce. The special cold appetizer of lobster on Asian noodles was strange, either the noodles were completely undercooked and oddly crunchy, or they forgot the announced noodles and substituted radish strips.Belgian waffle was good for dessert, as were the profiteroles with especially good dark chocolate sauce. But a small bottle of Belgian beer for $11.00? All in all a satisfactory meal, though for the high price not more than that. read more

This is an authentic feeling Euporean place. Went for brunch. I misordered (eggs gratin bechamel) and thought my meal was just okay, but the rest of our groups' meals looked yummy. Totally had food envy over the meurette eggs! We also got the rabbit terrine to share and it was tasty, also not something I would traditionally order. Truly the best dining experience I've had in a long time. This little piece of France is a super welcoming place with such a unique atmosphere. We opted to get a few appetizers rather than a meal so we could try a few thinhs, and all of it was amazing. The salmon tartar was my favorite of the appetizers, but everything was so automatically perfect. But you CANNOT leave without trying the dark chocolate mousse. Honestly, aside from the rest of the amazing experience, I would go back just for that mousse. I scraped as much of it off the bowl as possible because I never wanted to stop eating it. Even if you fill up on your meal, you should still get this mousse because it's so light and delicious. Definitely returning soon! read more

Went there last night for my birthday. I had wanted to try this particular Belgian restaurant since I tried Sur la Place (across the street and also Belgian) six weeks prior. It wasn't crowded when we got there around 5:30 but filled up quickly and there was a line out the door when we left around 7:30. Like other reviewers I will say that it was a bit cramped but not uncomfortably so. We were more towards the back of the restaurant. The waiter was not warm at all but rather just going through the motions of "get 'em in, get 'em out". Personally I felt that Sur la Place had a warmer environment as far as wait staff goes. The appetizer we chose was the Assiette de Chacuterie. It was so-so. Pate was good. The people next to us ordered the Belgian endives (Chicons au gratin) and they looked really good. My mother is from the Flemish speaking side of Belgium and she makes these all the time and they did look and smell just like hers. Yum. As far as the entrees go, my sister had the mussels. She was disappointed. My mussels at Sur la Place were out of this world by the way. I got the ones prepared in their Lobster Bisque. Yum! I had the Carbonnade à la Flamande. It was good but very salty as were the french fries. Speaking of the french fries, although they were better than the ones at Sur la Place (which were just plain BAD) they weren't the best I have had by a long shot. The best fries EVER are in Belgium itself. Try going to a frituur! And, the mayonnaise was REALLY bad at both places. No taste, not fresh. My brother in law had the lamb stew and liked it a lot. The beers were fantastic as usual. I had a Kasteels donker which isn't as tart as a dark beer usually is. It had a little sweetness to it. On to desserts ... I had the Gauffre de Bruxelles which was excellent. The waffle was fresh and warm and combined with the poached pear, chocolate and creme fraiche it melted in your mouth. My sister and brother-in-law split the mousse which was also very good. So, to surmise, I would say the appetizer and entrees were average. The beer and dessert were outstanding. read more

I travel to this area quite often and never miss a stop here. It's reminiscent of a cafe I used to frequent in Paris. The food is so good you will instantly forget whatever (if any) faux pas made by the staff. This has been one of my favorite restaurants in the area since it opened a few years ago. I spend six months of the year in Washington DC and while I am in residence here would tend to eat at Et Voila on average at least once and more often twice a week. I recently got back from Europe and within days was enjoying the pea soup and beet salad - which in my opinion is one of the tastiest I have ever savored on either side of the Atlantic!!The staff and in particular Philippe is friendly, pleasant and always welcoming and the ambience is warm and authentic..However, I have been disapointed in the service and the food over the last few weeks and am at a loss as to why the attitude has changed in this once exceptional establishment.. My main bone of contention has been the service, or the lack thereof!. After lunching there on Friday, I made a reservation for the following Tuesday for two at 6.30 pm. I was meeting a good friend and business colleague and had been looking forward to delighting him with the Et Voila fare. My friend is a bit of a food aficionado and is a member of a foodie brunch club, so I knew he was going to be a tough audience to please,.. But, I had every confidence that the restaurant would live up to his expectations! At the same time I also made a reservation for four on Friday at 7.00. My husband and I were hosting and celebrating our young friends engagement and wanted to do something special! I also asked if we could request a table but was told that the restaurant did not like to do that - but they would see what they could do on the night.. Fair enough! I arrived at 6.35 on Tuesday and saw my friend already seated at the table just beside the cash register beside the bar. Not the best table in the house and probably one of the worst ,but thought no more about it until I noticed how many other tables were still vacant and questioned the waitress, Sophie, on why we had been seated there, - after all I had reserved last week and requested a table in the middle of the restaurant if possible!! She told me there had been no reservation under my name and we were lucky they were accommodating us at all as they were expecting it to be a busy night. I asked her to check again as I had definitely booked and that Philippe had taken the booking. She did so and as the register was at my elbow, I was able to have a running commentary with her, giving her numerous variations of my name and phone number just in case something had got lost in translation!! But no, my name was not there.. I then asked her to check my reservation for Friday, which she did and after some searching said she found it but it was for 7.30 and not 7 as I had previously understood... I resigned myself to the mistake and the consequences and settled down to enjoy my evening with Dan.. He ordered the beet salad and I the endive, both were delicious.. I had the trout on the previous Friday, which was equally delicious and recommended it to him. He loved it ! I ordered the mussels and fries and was unfortunately not impressed! I have had the moules there before and they were cooked to perfection but on Tuesday they were stringy and the fries tasted of old oil and were overcooked.. I had two glasses of cave, he had two glasses of Sauvignon Blanc. I traded desert for Amaretto and we shared the pear tart, which was just fine.. Fast Forward to Friday --- My husband and I arrive promptly at 7.30 and were greeted at the entrance by a long line of people waiting for tables.. I breathed a sigh of relief that I had confirmed the booking and assured my husband that we should only have to wait a little bit! A few minutes later, our adorable, madly in love and freshly engaged couple burst in full of happy sounds and we fall on them, congratulations in order and ready to break out the champers! Full of merriment we chat for another five minutes or so before someone gets around to us and asks if we have a reservation.. Yes, Yes! We do, four at 7.30 .. I confirmed with Sophie on Tuesday and the original booking was made with Philippe on Friday last, I shouted over the noise! The tall waiter, who I know to see, but not his name - went to the book and checked it .. He then called me over to have a look and see if I could spot my name.. I couldn't see it either, but could not understand it as Sophie had said it was definitely there and surely they could not have made the same mistake twice in one week!! Sophie was not working on Friday so Philippe was called up to see what he could do.. He was at a loss and could not even remember taking the first reservation! He could not explain why Sophie had confirmed a booking when clearly we were not in the book and there was nothing he could do because his boss said they were too busy.. He was sorry but with a gallic shrug and a pout raised his hands in the air and said if we wanted we could go off for a few hours and maybe just maybe we might get a table after 9 or so! Disclaimer: My ratings are based upon the classification the restaurant falls under. In this instance, Et Voila, is trying to be a fine dining establishment so I am rating it against its peers in the fine dining segment. Not sure what that no nothing clown Tom Sietsma was talking about. While the food was edible (And it started fairly strong), there were major seasoning issues on pretty much every dish and some customer service and meat preparation issues. Apps 1. French Onion Soup: Started off pretty good. Nicely flavored french onion soup. Only complaint is that they could have gotten a darker color and gone for 1 more deglaze but the salt, white wine, and some subtle hints of bay leaf and Thyme came through. Overall a solid dish. 2. Squid Salad: Again, a solid pretty well seasoned dish. For my own personal preference the Olive overwhelmed the dish a little but it was pretty clear that is what they were going for. My calimari was a little over cooked and lacked flavor-This was a shame because it was a great looking piece of squid that would have made the dish a winner if cooked and seasoned properly. Main 1. Duck with an Orange Gastrique: I requested the duck to be cooked medium rare. Unfortunately, the duck came out well done, super tough, could barely chew it because it was so dry and the skin was not crispy (A hard feat to accomplish). I sent the dish back after the waiter tried to convince me for several minutes that it was cooked properly. The dish came back, well seasoned, again with no crispy skin (You can't serve duck with the skin on if you do not properly render out the fat and crisp the skin. A restaurant has no business serving duck or calling itself a french/belgium restaurant or fine dining establishment if you can't get this right. Maybe this was partly a result of it being a special item and the kitchen doesn't prepare it often but still inexcusable), and cooked to rare (Which although can be slightly tough, is fine with me). The orange gastrique came out too sugary tasting, which is a result of an improper balance of flavors (Sweet, sour, salt, bitter)...it was overly sweet. More Veal stock, more salt, and a splash of red wine vinegar was desperately needed. The veg in this dish seemed flavorful but it was hard to judge due to the Orange Gastrique overwhelming the flavor 2.Ribeye with Frites: The steak was cooked to the perfect temperature but it lacked salt. The butter based sauce that accompanied it completely lacked a balance of flavor. It was way too heavy, completely lacked the necessary salt and it needed significantly more lemon/acidity to cut the heaviness of the butter. To me, although this is a traditional sauce that is served with steak, it should not be served with steak, this flavor combination should be reserved for fish. If you insist on serving it with steak, the balance has to be there and you need to up the pepper. The frites, as hard as it is to do, were a complete miss. The fries appeared to lack any salt and some fresh parsley would have been nice. Dessert: Skipped, came with the intent of trying dessert as well, but nothing on the menu was appealing to me Ambiance: It has the potential to be a nice inviting, intimate restaurant, but the interior is just plain dull. It could use some warmth, removal of some unnecessary decor that clutters the space, and a revamping of the tiny bar in front. read more

how about this? i have NEVER been disappointed at Et Voila. we discovered et voila when we dined at a competitor (another french belgian restaurant) on the other side of the street. once we experienced the wonderful food and service at Et Voila, we never went back to "the other PLACE" (pun intended!) we are never disappointed with the fabulous mussels served with crispy frites (just the way we like them). most of the appetizers and salads that we've tried have been wonderful. the only negative comment came from a friend who was our guest one evening two summers ago when he ordered the salmon entree. "this is delicious but the portion is too small." not at all how we feel about our favorite, mussels, which are served in a nice sized pot and filled almost to the top with tasty, succulent mussels and mouth watering broth which i tend to devour after i devour the last mussel. of course, this requires extra bread which our wait person is only too happy to bring to the table. my husband sometimes wishes the bartender would be more generous with his pours but this is not enough of a deterrent to keep us away from one of our favorite washington eateries which is always listed in Washingtonian Magazine's top 100 DC restauraurants. it's no wonder we spot so many friends and, often, washington luminaries enjoying the dining pleasures of ET Voila. one night, John and Teresa Kerry sat at the next table. if he shows up again, i might have to ruin his meal by pointing out what a bad deal he made with Iran. ahhhh, but that's another review. We have eaten at et voila for years and sadly it is going down hill. Our reservation was at 7:15 tonight (Friday, April 20) and we weren't seated until 7:50. No apologies -- just standing in that very crowded hallway by the bar (very unpleasant). For as many times as I can count, as least 50% of the time we stand way past our reservation time on weekends. There are restaurants who plan their reservations and those who crowd them at the expense of their patrons. Et Voila is very much the latter. The food is wonderful but the journey there is indeed no longer worth it. And the attitude of the maitre-de is frankly rude. Who wants to end their busy DC work life that way. No us. The DC gem of a restaurant has very much lost its magic. read more

Not the way to welcome patrons The food would have been wonderful (it typically is) had we been given the chance to enjoy it. We made a last-minute reservation at Et Voilà through OpenTable for 9:15pm and drove four miles across town to find that the place was closing down. There were only a few clients left finishing their meals and the manager apologized by saying that they had had a slow night and decided to close early. He made no effort to honor the reservation (we are new to OpenTable and don't yet fully understand how it works was his lame excuse). We would have refused to stay in a place where we felt unwelcome but he did not even try and never owned to the mistake. Did he offer us to dine quickly at the bar? Get food to take away? Invite us to come back the following day? Offer us a drink while we made plans to go somewhere else? Nothing at all! The upside is that we found Bistroquet next door, a new French bistro with delicious food and a warm welcome. read more

My first visit to Et Voila was good but not stellar. I felt that the tables were way too cramped and felt rushed to vacate. After many subsequent visits I now know it is possible to slow down the experience by savoring the well-mixed drink and not ordering right away. The bustle is all part of the charm of this place favored by neighborhood locals who stream in. Food is excellent and, after you have been there multiple times, you will get a smile along with the excellent food and efficient service. read more

Et Voila! is probably my favorite restaurant in DC. Tucked away in the Palisades, it's worth the trip. It's always very busy and lively so don't go without a reservation on the weekends. My favorite dishes include the beet salad, scallops in lobster sauce, the muscles and frites, and the crab cakes, but everything is fantastic. I look forward to giving brunch a try soon. I went 3 times but the last one was worst one. Because they made us hurry and came 4 times to check table if we finished even there was some food on the plate. Also, the space between table was so narrow and you need to very squeeze to be seated on the bench. Of course, it's very close next each other. The friend went together said that she felt a little bit claustrophobia. The food was fine. The appetizer was pretty good. We ordered pate. But the main was not great. Tartar was needed more salt and pepper. It was very plain taste. The mussels were all small and the sweet potatoes were not cooked enough. The restaurant was full but I was very disappointed today. The next table was a mother and a daughter. The seat assigner was taking care of them like putting their coat to the hunger and moved table for one of them to be seated. But when I was escorted he just put menus on the table. It was very disappointing. I don't know I want to return again. But the restaurant was full. read more

I've eaten here twice in the last week and it's delicious! I had the beef stew with fries...oh the fries...amazing fries and the stew was so tender, slowly simmered in dark beer. My friend's ribeye steak was great, a real charred grill taste and perfectly done. On my second visit I had the Chicon en Gratin...endive wrapped in ham and cooked in a bechamel sauce with gruyere melted on top. Decadent and heavenly. My girlfriend tried the Hanger steak which was a bit too chewy (as hanger steak often is). I'd suggest avoiding the hanger steak. Dessert was chocolate mousse, light, airy and perfect with a thin almond cookie dotted with pistachios. The coffee and ice tea were both fresh and excellent, as was the plentiful warm, fresh bread served with unsalted (European style) cold butter. They also made the best of a long, narrow space. The high ceilings help to make the place feel more spacious and the decor is understated, elegantly casual. Make reservations the word is out for dinner, though there was plenty of seating for brunch. read more

Why is that every time we show up at our appointed reservation time, we are asked to wait for at least 30 minutes in a cramped entryway before being seated...without the slightest apology from the wait staff?!? Et Voila seems to go out of the way to make diners feel they are an imposition rather than guests. Once seated, there's another 20-minute wait for a glass of wine, after which nothing tastes as good as it might in a friendlier, more solicitous setting. I realize the restaurant is small and juggling reservations is tough, and I'd be more understanding if the host was the least bit apologetic for the wait(s). We won't go back again. read more

We had a poor service experience. Reservation made but I think that is just a suggestion here. They will take you whenever they decide. Tried to stay from getting annoyed only to get more annoyed when trying to order a couple of drinks from the bartender. He avoided eye contact for 10 min and then I caught him and asked for a couple drinks. He said sure one moment. He then proceeded to serve to other couples at the bar, got the bill prepared for 3 others and filled orders from the tables. Then he said half heartedly I think you are going to be seated. Which was his way of saying I knew I was going to blow you off and I did. Wow. I told him forget it. I expressed the poor service to the host. He just smiled and laughed. Wow. Like not even like I am sorry we are really busy tonight. Food was ok. They do like to pick up your plates fast like they are in a hurry. Also noticed they used a small white wine glass for a Bordeaux. Others next to us had the larger glass. If this place had someone driving a customer service culture would be a regular. We were excited to dine at Et Voila this evening following what we thought was an expansion to the restaurant. From all we could see, they expanded the bar area so that now, if you have the misfortune to be at a two top on the left side of the restaurant as you go in, there will be a constant steam of wait staff and patrons going past you throughout your entire meal. They have the same tired menu they've always had, and alas, they did nothing to dampen the noise decibel level when they renovated so that it was impossible to have a dinner conversation without shouting. We used to like this little place, but sadly, I doubt we will return. We fled without staying for dessert! read more

I think Et Voila! is absolutely charming, even classy. The dishes are simple, but beautifully executed, and the staff is attentive and knowledgeable. I am a fan of Belgian beers, so I do wish they had a longer list, but I also really enjoy some of the beers they do have, so I had a good time. We had the belgian endives wrapped in ham with bechamel, and the mussels, plus the butternut squash soup and the vegetarian option- which was delicious, although just a bunch of vegetables on a plate. a really nice salad, basically. Unfortunately, not only was it packed but we felt ignored as our reserved time came and went. We ordered drinks as we stood and finally, 25 minutes late, we were seated. The good news? Walking up to this spot reminded me of my fave tiny brunch spot in SF. On a Saturday, brunch begins at 11AM so the three of us were the first to arrive. Although a beautiful day, we chose not to sit on the sidewalk and opted for a nice booth underneath a skylight instead. The music set the ambiance with Edith Piaf and other european melodies. The waiter brought us waters and coffees, as we informed him that this was a leisurely brunch so don't expect us to order anytime soon. I had already started my morning off with mom's homecooked noodles so I knew I'd be getting dessert--delicious belgian fluffy waffles with strawberries, blueberries and a hefty dollop of whipped cream. My chums ordered the french onion soup and the spinach crepes(2). Service was nice and checked in but didn't crowd us even though we were the only ones there. We went to Et Voila! for dinner on a recent Tuesday night. The Washingtonian says it's "Not Kid Friendly," though we called and asked the staff and they said kids were just fine. The crowd tends to be older, which is consistent with just about any restaurant in the Palisades neighborhood, but we didn't feel out of place. We all enjoyed our meals very much. To start I had the chicon au gratin - endive, wrapped in ham and topped with a gruyere bechamel sauce - really good! The pate we ordered was a bit chunkier than I would've liked and tasted a little bit of vinegar (maybe wine?) - it was the only thing we ordered which I thought wasn't so great. My lobster sandwich was excellent, though a little light on lobster. My wife's steak tartare was very good and the frittes were excellent. My mom also really liked her French onion soup. The dessert menu had tons of tempting options. We ordered the crepes, chocolate macaroon and lemon tart to share among the five of us - needless to say we cleaned our plates. Service was polite despite being authentically French/Belgian! And, despite the high quality of the cuisine, the prices weren't sky high - not many items north of $20. Great French food in a cozy and intimate atmosphere. I stopped by Et Voila! on a business trip and was pleasantly surprise. As several other reviews already mentioned, the coq au vin was fantastic. A friend and I ventured into the palisades section of DC and stumbled upon this gem. From the menu we settled on the ribeye which was cooked perfectly medium and the pan seared scallops. When I say the food was bomb I mean every last word of it. I definitely recommend the escargot for an app as well. $100 for two people very well spent. read more

Stopped by Et Voila on the last day of a DC trip and the service and food made it simply the best day of the trip! From the salmon eggs benedict to the mussels everything was delicious. This restaurant was a pure treat. I was visiting a friend that recently relocated to DC and is still getting the vibe of the city. In my search of "must do" restaurants, I found Et Voila. To begin, the restaurant is a nice size that gives you a sense of intimacy. If you are less than 3 people, no need for a reservation. We arrived at 5:00pm and were seated immediately. We ordered red wine from an extensive list of European favorites. For appetizer, we started with the goat cheese salad that is perfectly portioned to feed 2. For the main, my friend ordered the salmon in mustard sauce and she devoured it. The salmon was a cooked to perfection and amble in portion. As the veggie, I had the gnocchi with mushrooms and young pumpkin. It was delectable and ate every bite. We did not have room for dessert but the menu is truly a gourmand and worth saving room to experience. Definitely make this a must do for your dinning adventures. NOTE: There is street parking all around just make notice of the time limits. Some 1 hour only until 6:30pm. read more

Tried Et Voila for the first time tonight and had a pretty interesting experience. We showed up for our 7:30pm reservation and the smallish restaurant was very busy. After waiting 5 minutes a flustered server brought us back to sit down and mentioned that it wasn't the greatest table, but that he could move us in a bit. Huh? He brought us back to the private room to sit at the end of a long table that sat a party of 6 at an 8 person table next to the kitchen swinging doors. So we "had dinner" with a table of people speaking what we think was Chinese, which was challenging given that we have 2 small children and this was supposed to be our night out on our own.. Fortunately the food was good! I would have thought that the restaurant might have given us a drink on the house for the odd accommodations, but they didn't, nor did they offer to move us to our own table at any point. Probably wouldn't go back in light of the experience, given they likely wouldn't have tried to get away with that with their more "mature" looking patrons. read more

A very charming restaurant went there with a couple of friends. The restaurant can get very crowded but its still cozy. Delicious food priced just right! My fav was the beet salad. And I love Lambic Framboise and not many restaurants have it so this was a plus! Will definitely go back. read more

Our third visit was in celebration of our daughter's high school graduation and it couldn't have been more wonderful. Every dish was superb! Fantastic scallops in beurre blanc with dried cherries(!); the mussels with lobster sauce; the mussels with curry sauce; the fresh pasta; the smoked trout; the incredibly rich ham & endive; the gravlax with blinis; the beet salad; the lobster with celery root remoulade & pureed peas. EVERYTHING was delicious. Good portions at fair prices. Nice servers. Attractive space. Thanks Et Voila for making our family celebration extra special. read more

Loved this restaurant, which is definitely not closed, as indicated in the yelp listing. I had the salad with goat cheese, the beef stew and the profiteroles. All were well done with the freshest ingredients. My bellini was yummy too! I will be back soon! read more
