We were seated and had our drink orders taken quickly and we never saw the server again after that. We had to wave down a different server for food and our check after finishing our meal. During majority of our time there we saw our original server at the bar flirting/preoccupied with someone at the bar. They seemed to be drawing on each other or something? Mediocre food, horrific service. Bartender was extremely rude and clearly did not want to help my female friend and I. I look younger than I am- this is a key piece of information. My friend and colleague, a Egyptian male a bit older than us, came to join us at the bar. He was profiled when he came in, almost wasn't let in, and was subsequently followed around the restaurant at his every move. He was extremely uncomfortable, as was my friend and I in regard to the bartender's behavior. One week later, we continue to talk about this very bad experience. Etto serves good pizza to Washington, D.C. It's a small, no reservation Italian restaurant in the heart of 14th Street NW with bar seating and an outdoor patio. Simple candles grace each table with the glow of the brick oven in the back baking Italian thin crust pizza. Their menu changes daily including their pizza, meats, and cocktail selection. When I went, I ordered a sausage and green tomato pizza with a fried egg on the top. It cost $17, but it was large and filling. If you love pizza, you MUST pop into Etto! read more

Etto is still our favorite casual restaurant in DC. We have *never* been disappointed with anything on the menu -- sides, pizzas, bread, cocktails, wine -- it is ALL excellent. The service is also incredible and feels very comfortable every time we are there. In good weather I will always opt to eat outdoors on their cozy little patio. They may be in a somewhat fancy neighborhood but the quality of the food here did not match the price (and its attendant expectations). The calamari salad was a joke. Tiny quantity (even for a girl). Such a cozy and great spot! I'd been meaning to go for a while and was not disappointed despite having very high expectations. The calamari and genovese pizzas (both daily specials) were uniquely delicious, especially the hosuemade pesto and the perfect crust. We also loved the radicchio salad. That wood fired oven really made the difference. The whole restaurant was cute and cozy, from the tiled floors to the small bar and ample windows. It wasn't too crowded or loud on a weekday night, though there was a short wait by the time we left. Not sure if it was just an "off" day, but I was not feeling this place. For some reason all of the interactions with the staff were VERY awkward. Were they nice? Sure. But definitely awkward. On to the food. We shared a watercress Caesar which was pretty good. Not too overdressed, not too salty. I did like that they had a manageable menu though - nothing overwhelming, and pretty easy to understand. We each ordered a pizza: the marinara for me, and the calabrese salami for my partner. I had Etto bookmarked for a couple of years and finally made my way over there this past Friday evening around 7pm. We had a short (10 minute) wait and were directed to a standing area of the bar to wait. While here, I asked for a mocktail rec and he suggested the Italian soda that was citrus-mint. It was delicious and refreshing; not overly minty which was pleasant. Unfortunately, this was the best item I had on this particular evening. Maybe I ordered wrong, maybe it was an off night, but I was left thoroughly unimpressed with both pizza options my husband and I ordered. Off the daily special menu, I chose the Pepperoni Napoletana (tomato puree, mozarella di bufala, oregano, fresh basil) and my husband went with the Cotechino with fontina and egg (white pizza with cotechino sausage, egg, and fontina). Our pizzas were delivered within less than 10 minutes of ordering. The pepperoni on the pizza was, indeed, stacked "three deep" (as our server exclaimed) and was well spiced and flavored. This was where the flavor ended and the blandness and grease took over. Spicy red pepper could not redeem the lack of flavor in every other aspect of the pizza. Pools of grease were all over too. The pizza was far too floppy to pick up to eat, yet was difficult to cut without picking up the paper underneath and then having to peel it off to ensure I didn't swallow any. The crust was more burnt than any Neopolitan pizza I have had, including those in Italy. I also left the crust which is always my favorite pizza part! I left 2 out of 6 slices left because it just wasn't that good, and I, honestly, always finish a six slice pie if I enjoy it. My husband had similar sentiments about the cotechino. The sausage was delicious but the rest was bland and greasy. He felt quite sick afterwards and for the rest of the evening. The small plates looked interesting and perhaps that is where Etto's strong suit lies (despite advertising pizza as the specialty). I was pretty disappointed in the food (service was a-ok), so I doubt I will return here in the future. read more

Stopped by this establishment on our way to dinner for a pre dinner drink. I got a Hugo's boss at the bar and it tasted and smelled like a wet sock (mildew-y). Was very confused? Anyways, it was disgusting. There was a lemon peel garnish in my drink so I am assuming it was because the lemon or maybe the glass had not been washed properly? However, I did drink my partners drink and there was not the same mildew scent / taste. We proceeded to drink our drinks and chatted for a few moments before the bartender comes up to my partner and asks if he would like another drink, and did not even acknowledge my presence. Even though I had just about the same amount left of my drink as him. This was extremely odd and rude. Unfortunately, a 20% auto grat is included in the bill. The location is central and so convenient. The vibe in the restaurant is cozy and gives you that NY Pizzeria feel. We had the prosciutto and arugula pizza which was excellent. The crust was fantastic and it exceeded expectations. We also had burrata which was amazing and our waitress was more than happy to keep us stocked with bread. The Pinot Bianca was fantastic as well. (Visited pre-covid) Etto has a very small and cozy vibe, the dimmed lighting and more quiet atmosphere gives it an intimate feel. It's a nice escape from the craziness but it's not too quiet where it doesn't feel lively or like you're not free to have an animated conversation (my mom and I definitely did!). Their menus are centered around pizza and wine. They also have some options "from the board", which are some pre-made items out on the counter. To start we got the Butternut Squash Agrodolce with Mozzarella di Bufala from the board. The butternut squash perfectly cooked, tender with a charred tasted and accompanied by a soft and creamy burrata. The whole dish was served with some yummy soft and dense bread that tasted homemade. For pizza, there are a ton of options ranging from the classics to more adventurous options with anchovies. We got the greens which was a nice mix of ingredients. The crust is soft and chewy, I could have eaten just that. The pizzas easily serve two people, I just came from working out and was extra but splitting one pizza and an app did the trick. And a glass of wine of course. Our waiter was super knowledgeable about all the options on the menu, and recommended a glass that I loved. The raging cooking fire on display from the front door IS the center piece, though, and sets the scene for a meal with friends that still feels like your tucked away at home. This restaurant has a homey vibe and a staff that is patient, kind, and knowledgeable about the menu. The classic interior with clay-colored tiles, warm white walls, as well as plenty of wood and exposed brick makes this restaurant feel so down to earth--in a non-contrived way. Pizzas range in price from $13-17. You can get a basic Margherita pizza or go more adventurous with pizzas like Cotechino with Fontina and Egg, Potato Patata Chorizo Tomato, or Fennel Sausage & Roasted Peppers. The Roasted Cauliflower pizza is GREAT for vegans because it comes with no cheese. The only down-side is that there is no happy hour at this restaurant. My beer was $7 (not bad!) but would have been nice to snag a deal. I drank the Old Speckled Hen, a smooth, nutty English pale ale. I have traveled for 3 months through Italy and 3 months through Spain so I am always on the look out for places like Etto. Ever since fasting vermouth in Barcelona and across Spain I have fallen in love with the drink, I was thrilled to see Etto offered a house made vermouth. I quickly ordered the vermouth and it was everything I looked for in the classic drink, down to the square ice cubes, absolutely fantastic. As a table we ordered meat balls, peppers, burrata, beat salad and a pizza special. Every dish was unique and equally scrumptious. I appreciated the quality ingredients that were left to do the "talking" without being over dressed. The food was easily 5 stars! Unfortunately I'm giving this place 4 stars as I think the wait staff could use some "friendliness" training. Etto is great, but it can get crazy packed on weekends so I think best bet is going during the week if you don't want to wait. My favorite pizza I've tried on their menu is the all romana with the anchovies! But I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order. The crust at etto is perfect--not too thick or thin and texture has a crisp outside but a soft doughiness on inside. Other great things--you can put an egg on any of the pizzas (to the tune of single ladies: if you like it then you shoulda put an egg on it). They also have red pepper on the tables already so you don't have to ask for it. Cocktails are good--I'm forgetting the name of the one I like but it has gin and absinthe in it and they garnish it with a lemon peel and maraschino cherry--might be called the forget me not or something like that. They have veggie medleys or antipasto type situations too but haven't tried a lot of those because I'm just there for carbs and cheese. Ones I've had are good though. read more

I've been holding off on reviewing this spot because I didn't want extra competition for their lovely outdoor tables, but after another magnificent meal at Etto last night it just feels wrong to hide this gem. I love every corner of this restaurant. The wine list is the most original and delicious in DC. Highly curated and always delightful. They were the first to introduce me to dry lambruscos. The seasonal daily board specials, the watercress Caesar, the professional service, and the excellent Neapolitan style pies made with flour they mill themselves make this 5 stars a no brainer. So many DC restaurants are built at the scale of a Cheesecake Factory (ahem Diplomate... Jaleo... Zaytinya...) but Etto is at the scale of a true neighborhood restaurant.
