I am in full agreement with the salad bar comment; what's that all about? A salad bar in a 'fine dining' establishment? Okay... The food is all awful-I mean, truly awful. I have never eaten one decent item from there. The fish is overcooked and flavorless. The lobster is also overcooked, and it was bitter and tough. Its your typical wannabe fancy, molded rice pilaf, bagged steamed cauliflower and carrot fare. Seeing as how the place isn't very cheap, I think each meal should come with a complimentary shot of Pepto Bismol. The only reason I'd ever go there again is if they offered me a free meal and I was feeling a little 'backed up', because you are almost certainly guaranteed horrible stomach issues following a meal at Sea Grill. Went in for dinner and the first waitress was really rude so they switched her. Then the food.........well food was very bland and flavorless, steak and lobster was extremely overpriced, needed tons of salt to get some sort of flavor. Prime rib that was ordered medium came out really rare. And my wife's filet cold and no sauce. Service sucked. Food really sucked. Was my first and definitely my last time ever there. I was pretty excited about coming to The Sea Grill. This relatively fancy dancy "expensive" restaurant of Eureka, CA was yelped so positively. Umm... it wasn't good. I ordered the macadamian nut sauced mahi mahi or something and it came out drenched in that sauce... absolutely saturated. The meal was really not enjoyed by either of us... what a disappointment. Other notes: The highly acclaimed chowder was not special at all. If you order a salad, you go and get it at their community salad bar (that's NOT fancy dancy). Also, I noticed that 3 out of 5 items that people reviewed weren't on the menu (nor the specials menu). So they didn't even have anything I really wanted in the first place. That's a pisser. Anyway, I ate my meal (at least half of it), so I can't fail it completely. I'll give this restaurant a D+. Eureka is a decently sized ocean town in California, and in my opinion, the quality of food should reflect that!!! read more

I'm going to keep this simple. I was a little nervous after reading many of the reviews to dine at the seafood grill. I give stars based on the food, not service or ambience and the other BS add ons that people feel necessary to obsess about. I will say that the host, and two servers were very warm and helpful. Our food was timed properly as well. On to the food. I have a hearty appetite, so the amount of food that I eat is probably a lot for a woman. Salad bar- above average. It had the normal salad toppings as well as several pasta and mayo based salads. I like to dabble with these, so it was fine by me. Braided rolls- delicious. I had two of them. My partner said the baked oysters were "pretty good" but they did come with bacon on them, and he doesn't generally eat pork. He said the chowder was average. Prime rib- quite good. (He said) Petrale sole- excellent. I had it baked and it was cooked in a garlic butter and wine sauce. It was accompanied with mixed veggies and potato of your choice. I had the stuffed baked potato which was great, almost like a twice baked potato (which I happen to like.) The portions are large, the selection is more than I was expecting and the quality and preparation of the food were excellent. We will be back. read more

We received a VERY HIGH recommendation from our hotel. We drove over 300 miles to have some great seafood and Sushi. We ordered some drinks which took 20 minutes. Then we ordered some Sushi and seafood. 45 minutes later .... NOTHING! Other people were leaving. The Sushi bar was absolutely clueless of all orders. CHAOS! Just ate here, the Clam Chowder was outstanding. The salad bar was solid. I had some Halibut Fish and Chips that were amazing and the Salmon Dish my wife had she said was one of the best. It is not cheap, but it is also not outrageous. This is a very good choice in Eureka. read more

This restaurant has a nice, romantic ambiance. The staff, including our server, were very friendly and attentive. She checked up on us very often, which is always appreciated. We ordered the baked oysters as an appetizer and the ling cod that comes with vegetables, along with our choice of twice-baked potato, rice pilaf, and Sea Grill chowder. They also started us off with some bread that was so soft and delicious! Except for the cod being a little under seasoned for my taste, everything was incredibly delicious especially the baked oysters, twice-baked potatoes and chowder (probably one of the best I've tasted). The baked oysters had some heat to them, but was very delicious regardless. Couldn't get enough of them! Overall, I'd definitely recommend this place. My wife & I have lived in Humboldt County for a third of a century, raised a family here. We've been to the Sea Grill for dinner dozens of times during that time, and have never been disappointed. It's a high end restaurant (though prices aren't ridiculous), and we usually go there for splurge family milestone occasionas such as Birthdays, Anniversaries, Graduations, and such. We have never been disappointed. For sheer dependability, only the Larrupin Cafe in Trinidad compares. So here are our plusses/minuses for the Sea Grill: 1. Expensive, though not absurd. Best for special occasions. 2. Not too noisy, though a full room can make it a bit challenging to have an intimate conversation. 3. Good, solid, delicious food. Don't expect anything wildly creative. Expect the classics done especially well. Seafood is the forte, but there are also few other things on offer. 4. Excellent salad bar. Large and varied assortment of fresh veggies and fruits, also several excellent offerings of prepared salads such as three bean, waldorf, pasta salad, etc. You could easily make a big meal of the salad bar alone, especially if you're Vegan or Vegetarian. 5. Very good service. Servers are courteous, attentive, and cheerfully do what it takes to get you what you need. Bottom line: always a solid choice, especially for seafood an salad bar. Sea Grill, Eureka Thanks to our hotel concierge's recommendation, my wife and I had an enjoyable seafood dinner at this elegantly appointed, medium-high end restaurant back in mid July. I'd highly recommend it, also. The Sea Grill has two medium-size dining rooms separated by a short hallway, which has been cleverly converted into a cozy waiting area. One dinning room has a classy, inviting bar counter. This restaurant has a high-end, intimate ambience. It has a small private parking lot. We had Calamari Steak (19), Steam Clams (25) from its Specials Menu; 1-liter carafe of house wine (12). The meals included Salad Bar. Our dinners were absolutely delicious; the salad was fresh, with a large selection of ingredients. The pickeled cumcumber was unsually appetizing! Our waitress that evening was helpful and adequate, but lacked enthusiasm. Other entrees were priced between $19-40, a bit high, but still reasonable for such type of restaurant. I got to try just about every appetizer on this menu when I visited about a month back. I was in town for a funeral unfortunately and we had a lot of family meeting up for the first night of the long weekend and we ended up here. With about 10 people at our table, my dad took over and ordered 2 each of 5 different appetizers. All I remember about them is that I ate way too many of them considering that I ordered the King Crab entree. What is there to say about King Crab, it was fresh and delicious. I walked out of there very full and very satisfied. My only criticism is that it's a bit expensive for what it is... five star prices for a four star spot. This was a nice dinner for my husband and I. He had the tangerine wheat beer and I had the mango mai tai (2 actually) the mai tai was great but I had to ask the second be a tad bit stronger. We had the 6 cooked oyster appetizer which was good but the cream fraiche and jalapeño overpowered the oyster and I got a bit of shell in all of my oysters. I know it can be unavoidable but in every single one? Definitely takes away from the enjoyment. He had the crab Alfredo with the salad bar which he enjoyed. I had the steak and lobster with clam chowder and it also came with a side which I chose the twice baked potato. First the twice baked was delicious! My husband helped me with that because it was so good. My steak was very good but still I've had better. The lobster was definitely good because well it's lobster. But what's disappointing is it was over cooked. As I said it still tasted great, but I'm sorry for $94 for just my entree, the lobster should be absolutely spot on. Service- it was mostly good. Our server seemed a bit dismissive maybe because we appeared to be the youngest people there and got profiled as such. The host came around a few times and was helpful, removing dishes, bringing dessert menus, and boxing our food. Let me start off by saying that i will go back here the next time I am in or passing through town. This place is going to be a regular for me and I expect to be in the area much more often over the next year. The atmosphere is more formal, there were some people dressed in jeans but the majority of folks were more business casual. My waitress checked on me regularly and make sure my cup was full, checked to see if I wanted more bread, and just to see how the meal was going. Other servers also dropped by topping off my water glass and taking away plates as they were finished. I will raise or lower a place by one whole star based on how they handle dishes, I hate it when they stack up and no-one does anything about them, these folks kept on top of it. They have a full salad bar, I could have made my meal just grazing the different options. I talked with the server as to whether or not I should get an appetizer with the mean, she suggested that the entree would probably be enough but said she would be happy to get me an appetizer later if I was still hungry. I chose a sword fish in a light white sauce. It was an excellent presentation and really well cooked. She was right, I didn't need anything else. For desert I tried the crem brule. My father-in-law really spoiled me here, he made an amazing crem brule with a hard shell and explode in your mouth center. This place wasn't quite to that standard, but it was excellent none-the-less. There was a good candy shell to the top and it was warm so they obviously hadn't put this in a long term storage space like I get from so many restaurants where the shell on top is color but no substance and the filling is bland and simple. I went again for New Year's Eve with the family....have enjoyed many a meal here. It's a bit pricey. They have a really great salad bar with a lot of variety on it, not just typical lettuce and other toppings but vinegar, cucumber and dill marinated salad and some other ones that looked like potato, some with carrots, etc. I have gotten their filet mignon a couple times and it has always been good. Enough that I go there for that dish. On this evening, however, it arrived looking a little small. I was disappointed as I was HUNGRY! The waitress noticed my discontent and asked what she could do to make it right. The hostess came over and explained food costs had gone up and the 12 oz they used to serve was no more, now it was 8 oz. I didn't like this explanation much, (if I had known it was so small I would not be ordering it to spend $32.95 on it!), but they persevered to make things right. The hostess asked if I liked prime rib, which of course is yes! So they brought me a healthy slab of that to go with my filet, free of charge. That, my friends, will keep me coming back! This place is filled with a lot of locals who obviously love it. I'm a business traveler who eats out at least 15 days a month and sorry but this place falls short. Atmosphere is nice, place is clean , a little outdated for my taste. Service was fairly slow but the staff was nice. They have a salad bar which is unusual for a finer dining establishment, it had a good selection or you can get soup or chowder. Food was good with a very limited selection of choices and most were pretty ordinary (e.g. various fish cuts with lemon sauce) but given all the other issues I see it as poor value. I've been there a number of times and for my mom's birthday earlier this week made a reservation. Despite my reservation made days in advance and the small party size of 3, we had to wait 40 MINUTES for a table. I thought a reservation was supposed to keep that from happening?! We would have left, but it was a rainy night and I didn't want to trek my mom all over Old Town looking for another birthday dinner option. I have been here many times and have never had a bad meal. I often get their fish special even when I have never heard of the fish they are serving, like Moonfish. The special has always been delicious. They have this wonderful salad bar. Filled with good green salad fixings but also a diverse selection of side-dish salads. Highly recommended. I had the salmon with stuffed potato. My wife had the halibut with cumin basmati rice. We were both delighted with our dishes. Everything was perfectly done, hot, and fresh. The sour cream cheesecake was delicious. Service was good. Visited this restaurant on our way up the coast on a road trip to Vancouver (started in OC). We heard about it from a family member who went to college here & also the hotel concierge worker. Great bang for your buck and probably the nicest high end restaurant in eureka. I got the roast duck and salad bar. Both were excellent! The salad bar is impressive and the drinks were priced well. Packed house on a Saturday night so we had to wait 20 minutes at the bar (we had a reservation). Paula gave us great service and the manager stopped by often to check on us as well. (The apple salad and the potato salad are next to each other....I was a little surprised when I started eat what I thought was potato..eh human error on my behalf) . my mothers oysters were served with ketchup not even cocktail sauce. When my boyfriend and I come here we sit at the bar. The young woman bartender was phenomenal! She was attentive and also stuck a couple conversations with us. It's a good time with the bartender and the waitresses who come to chat with her for a second. The food was great! I really enjoyed the oysters with caviar on top! This place and Gallaghers (which I also reviewed) are the two places my boyfriend dines at often so that may also say something about the restaurant. A friend of mine uses a two thumbs up/down rating for Restaurants and this one is a definite thumbs up. His system: does the experience meet or exceed expectations & price? The Sea Grill has that indefinable warm feeling of a successful family-run restaurant that cares about its customers and, maybe more importantly, the food. The bar service was personable and fast, the courses come in well timed waves leaving you plenty of time to visit the salad bar, for example. On the one hand, a salad bar is a gimmick to relieve the wait-staff from one whole course of serving. While this is usually true, the salad bar itself is delightful. There are several different selections of cold pastas, potato salad, etc as well as the basics done well. I am usually a big eater so a salad bar is a favorite of mine 95% of the time, but even a picky eater will enjoy this one. I recommend the fish. Let me say that again, I recommend the fish. I ordered, on one occasion, the prime rib which was delightful, but I urge you DON'T WIMP OUT and pass over the fish selection!!! The Ling Cod was gently sauced and flaky and tender, the lobster was cooked perfectly, I can't wait to try more. Lastly, I want to talk about the dinner rolls. I recommend you limit yourself to only 1 dinner roll early because they are WONDERFUL and addicting. I so easily could have eaten a whole meal of the rolls and would have missed out on the rest of what they have to offer. This is not a cheap place, but you certainly get your money's worth of a night out. First date place, YES. Business dinner, YES. Anniversary/birthday, YES! The best seafood in the area! I loved this restaurant and can't wait to go back again. They have a salad bar filled with different and unique salads and items. I could make a meal from the salad bar alone! (So long as it also included the yummy knotted bread rolls!) My salmon was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Never been here and needed some dinner. During this chaotic time of the Coronavirus this establishment was open for dinner take out. Rosie was there to take your order and it came out pretty fast. When I got to the hotel to dive in, it was better than I imagined. I ordered the Kumamoto Oysters, Sea Grill Chowder and Dungeness Crab Fettuccine. All were amazing!
