A warning: If you eat Weinerschnitzel in Vienna, you will be ruined for life on most of the versions you find elsewhere. But I was stupid, and hungry, and ordered what looked like the specialty of the house at Eve's Café. In fact, it looked like what they called a Wienerschnitzel was the basis for all sorts of schnitzel variations with different toppings and gravy. That should've been an extra warning for me. To be fair, the description on the menu said that what you would get was a pork chop, and that is what I got. It was a little bit tough, which I suspected in advance, watching the people at the next table, sewing on theirs. The breading was weird in a way that's hard to describe. It was somewhat over-seasoned, a little bit hard, and left an aftertaste that was slightly chemical. An even worse sin by Texas standards, it was small, as in the recommended meat portion size for healthy eating, about the size of my hand, minus the fingers. My side of onion rings had the same breading. And even though I am generally a gravy hog, I didn't especially care for the brown gravy that came with my meal. The German dill salad probably had some dill in it somewhere, but it was all drowned in so much mayonnaise-based dressing, I couldn't really taste it, and the whole thing turned into soup before I finished. This all really sounds terrible, but it wasn't actually terrible. I ate all of it except for the soupy salad, but it just never rose beyond competent, when I had gotten my hopes up for some good German food. As I looked around at what others were eating, I really wished I had ordered one of the fabulous-looking sandwiches, burgers, or bratwurst. Those are harder to mess up. The restaurant itself has a nice location on the Square in Lampasas, and a charming vibe. The Thursday lunch crowd was good sized so it looks like a popular local place. The service was very friendly and pretty quick--maybe little TOO quick, as if my schnitzel might've been waiting for me under a heat lamp. Once I'd finished, I was still a little hungry, and considered ordering a slice of their Black Forest Cake. But I have had Black Forest Cake in Bavaria, and I simply couldn't bear another disappointment. read more

So this place was recommended, so I had to go. The restaurant is a small establishment, with wonderful vibes. The inside was old fashioned, kind of a western twist. Any ways the waiters was friendly and welcoming. She took our oder quickly and brought us libations. The food looked good and tasted outstanding! The meat was soft and the brown gravy was on point. We came here for my mom's birthday and it was really good! I got the grilled cheese and absolutely loved it, along with the German pasta. The salad came with fresh, house-made dressing which was delicious, and the fries were also really good. My family enjoyed their meals as well, and the pies were amazing -- definitely a highlight. I would absolutely come back. The only downside was that the wait time for our food was about 30 minutes, but overall it was a great experience with the cute Christmas decor outside! read more

We found parking on the square; interior is small but we were seated right away. The smells that hit me when I entered and the cheesecake on display definitely enhanced my hunger. The service was a bit slow; however, the food was worth waiting for. The homemade brat was tasty, perfectly cooked and the sauerkraut was abundant and flavorful. Food was elevated as it appears new ownership has either taken over or management has changed. Had the cheeseburger and bratwurst hoagie with onion rings. Highly recommended. Reason for 4 stars is management has decided to add a "service fee" to the bill. It detracts from the customer-provider relationship. Passing the lack of proper employee wages isn't good business. I would've tipped more but now, when a restaurant takes this approach, I subtract the 3% from the 20% or more to offset. Shame that it's come to this but owners are making the decision to pass a "pass fee" to their customers which is in poor form. read more

We stopped here for lunch after an appointment in town. The place was clean and the staff was welcoming. He had the Weinerschnitzel and I had the Reuben. Hands down, I'd be willing to drive 25 minutes to get another Reuben. IMO, they have the best one around. The sauerkraut was so good too. German in name only. Nothing, and I mean nothing,on this menu is even close to authentic German food. It's also not gluten friendly (even the fries are breaded) The German beer was served American style, which probably pleased most patrons but that beer is not meant to be served icy. Cool, sure, but icy cold destroyed the flavor. The new owners have done a really great job keeping the menu authentic to what Eve cooked. The schnitzel salad still has that great homemade dressing. The schnitzel sandwich is usually on the lunch special menu and I substitute the warm German potato salad for the fries. Generous portions! Don't forget the cheesecakes! Just what I needed today! The Zweitel Schnitzel with added grilled onions was divine. The warm red cabbage and spaetzle were delicious. Too full for dessert but the cheesecake made in-house looked delicious. Kudos for hanging in there and being open for a window of time on Christmas Eve when so much of downtown Lampasses appears to be boarded up. While the decor/ambiance may be lacking, the friendly and attentive staff in their Christmas pj pants made up for it. Service was atrocious. Waited 15 minutes before our server came to the table. We were getting ready to leave. 3-4 servers stood chatting with each other by the cash register and doing nothing while we sat there. Our table was 5 fr away and in sight. Other tables weren't getting much attention but at least they had drinks. It's 100 degrees outside so at least could someone have offered water?????? Table next to us had 6 people and 2 servers were tripping over themselves to attend to them at any one time. Raves about the Weiner Schnitzel in other reviews made us order two different versions. Came with a tasty salad. Jaeger Schnitzel and Everything Schnitzel. The Jaeger Schnitzel was dry and the gravy was salty. The Everything Schnitzel was more tasty and not as salty. Highlight was the red cabbage. Asked another server for a beer refill right before the food was delivered and it arrived by another server half way through our meal. I was never offered a refill on my iced tea. Server never came back until it was time to bring the check. We had sat there for 10 minutes waiting for her. By this time probably half the restaurant had cleared out. She asked me about deserts and asked for 2 to go. We had already been there 2 hours and didn't feel like sitting around another hour waiting on her for a desert. My husband left and went to the car. Thought that may speed things up. She stood by the cash register chatting with other servers while I waited for the deserts and a revised check. She finally brings them in separate boxes and I ridiculously ask for a bag. Stopping in little Lampasas Texas for lunch we yelped it and discovered Eve's Cafe was highly rated. Yes we ate German food in the heart of Texas and it was delicious! We got there around one and had a 20 minute wait. This place is next door to a wonderful art gallery so we killed time there. They only have a dozen or so tables so seating was a bit cramped. The cafe is decorated with German memorabilia and a large collection of marionettes. Our server took our order and quickly returned with our drinks. One person ordered a draft beer which she declared cold and tasty. In our party we got bratwurst, Jagerschnitzel, a club sandwich and a kid's hotdog basket. The meals were served with a "house salad", choice of spaetzle or fries, purple cabbage or green beans and brown mushroom gravy. We choose spaetzle and red cabbage. The brats came with sour kraut. Everything was freshly made and really tasty. We took a piece of Black Forest cake to go but we hadn't reached the city limits before it was gone! They also offered pastries and cheesecake. Slow service no German cakes ... Gravy very watery meat over cooked need to learn to cook real German food

I have heard about this place, but only have tried it today: first time, last time. I went inside and saw the dust-covered puppets hanging from the ceiling...should have been a warning for me, but I got seated and hoped for the best. I saw the relatively high rating and was interested in trying the food and seeing for myself, just how good it was. After waiting for someone to finally come over and talk to us, we were given menus that had no drink menu, but were asked what we wanted to drink, so we asked what they had and after hearing the list, we ordered our drinks. They arrived and we ordered our food, knowing that it would be a while until we received our orders, mostly due to the packed restaurant and the homemade food. We finally had the salads put in front of us and started eating, they were pretty good, with a lot of dressing, but really, it's salad, so not a lot can go wrong there. After a huge amount of time, at least 30-35 minutes, our food came out and it was time to get into the mains. Well...I have been to a lot of German restaurants, plus my parents were German, and this is far from authentic. The gravy tasted packaged, and the fries were frozen, not homemade for either of them. Other than the schnitzel, everything was literally cold. The red cabbage had a strange taste until you got to the bottom of the bowl, then it was straight vinegar. The spaetzle had a taste of buttered popcorn, but at least looked like it might be homemade. No one came over to check on us, and this was far from the experience we were hoping for from reading the reviews. This experience was a disappointment and is a one-and-done for me. read more

Heard good things about Eve's so on a recent trip thru Lampasas we stopped for lunch. First, the best food I've ever had in this town. Most notable MEHs going to Storms and Toupsie's which has thankfully closed permanently. This town used to be a weekend pass thru on the way to Brownwood; first Arch Deluxe consumed at the main strip McDonalds. Where I learned that honey with McFries was better than ketchup. I got us on the waitlist; did some shopping in the adjacent shops. Only Dollar General I've ever seen in a square! Nice antique shopping in the area; browsed a bit before our friend arrived. Table was ready in half the time expected. Friendly service, only missing a diner's request for no cucumbers on the provided salad. GF and I split the delicious Jager Schnitzel. Sides were red cabbage and spätzle and were equally tasty. We even shared a rare cherry dessert. Eve's has better food than 97 percent of Fredericksburg's restaurants. I guess its good. It was busy at lunch on a Thursday. Our order of Schnitzel and a Rueben was quickly taken. We noticed after waiting 40 minutes that two tables seated before us were just getting their food. At 45 minutes we asked....having never seen one of the waitresses (4 in a gaggle at front)....asked about our food...A quick reply of" it's just coming out"...we had to go up and ask. After we tried the Black Forest cake, my wife had the Hammer Sandwich and I had the Bratwurst! It was wonderfully delicious and served quickly! Drove my mom 85 yr old mom and her friend up from Burnet for a birthday lunch. Upon entering the restaurant, they were busy. We were approached by a young lady, Emerson B, who let us know our wish would be 15-20 min long. My mother asked "where can we sit to wait?" Emerson B, replied with a big attitude "outside." Outside was never an issue, it was the attitude given. Our wait was longer than 15-20, it was exactly 37 min, yes, I timed it. Several people had exited the restaurant and still not table. I went inside to ask how much longer and saw the girls chatting at the counter. Emerson B. approached myself and another lady who asked how much longer and the reply was "we haven't had time to clean them" Fast forward to finally being seated. Another very swet young lady came over and took out drink order. A few minutes later, Emerson B. approaches and asks to take our drink order, I explained to her that our order was taken and she rudely replies "Well I am your waitress not her so what's your drink order?" "We help each other out here." our drinks finally came and my lemon that I asked for with my water had a hair on it. If we had not been there for a birthday lunch, I would have absolutely asked to speak to manager.
