I have taken my cockatoo to Az exotic animal hospital her entire life which is over 9 years and have spent thousands between their locations. I was provided incorrect information and they don't care to actually rectify the situation which makes me believe they're just in it for the money unfortunately. I will finish out the injections that I've already paid for here, but unfortunately have to be going somewhere else going forward so if anybody's reading this review and has a better recommendation, please provide it. My review used to be five stars because I used to rave about all of their locations and it's very unfortunate that they provide incorrect information and then can't stand by what they say. So a mistake that could have cost them $185 and instead of owning it, they would rather lose a life long patient instead. Updating my review per their response. There was no confusion regarding the tech fee when I specifically asked at the time when I received the quote for the injections if there will be any ADDITIONAL fees for appointment visits for these injections and I get told no that's why we're sending you home with them and you're supposed to bring them back to avoid having to pay the office visit which at that point in time full transparency would have been great and I could have been properly informed that I would in fact be paying a fee with every injection. It's not confusion when I'm being misled with information that's not correct. It's not even about the fees at this point it's about the principal and that's what bothers me. Jennifer also seems to lack empathy and probably shouldn't be customer facing. So thank you for the wonderful courtesy of waiving a fee that was never disclosed. Amazing place. I was referred to this specific location from a technician at the veterinary emergency group that I was at last night with my 15 year-old red eared slider, Skynyrd. When I arrived, they immediately greeted me and took Skynyrd back to a treatment area. The doctor is extremely well knowledge and every staff member I met is helpful and understanding. The prices seem to be very reasonable as well. definitely recommend this location. Now, just praying my baby girl will be able to lay her eggs without further dystocia. She is egg bound. read more

I am still traumatized by this experience years later. After this initial review was posted, I took my budgie to another clinic, but unfortunately it was too late and Az Exotic Animal Hospital had not preformed the correct treatment for her illness. Had she been correctly treated sooner, she could have been saved. Upon requesting they send the new clinic my budgies health records, AZ Exotic Animal Hospital went out of their way to write up extremely biased, detailed notes regarding their interaction with me and sent them to my new vet within my pets medical records. They described me as "huffy" and "impatient". Keep in mind I had been waiting for over 3 hours and was extremely worried about my dying budgie who they weren't even able to help. At no point was I aggressive, demanding, or threatening to staff. Just a frustrated and concerned pet owner. As a dog, cat, horse, & bird owner I have many friends in the veterinary industry and have had many positive interactions with veterinary staff. This is unfortunately one that still keeps me up at night. Please avoid this clinic at all costs if you have a pet in need of medical care. Extremely unprofessional and incompetent. read more

This vet office is all about greed and money and does not care about pets and animals well-being. I had to take my Degu here because I don't know of any other exotic pet hospitals. They charge $50 to book an appointment with them and $100 total for the visit. When I called to make the appointment I did not have my debit card with me as I'm just trying to make an appointment while caring for my pet. I told them I'd call them back and they had the audacity to call me 30 minutes later asking me for my card information to book the appointment. I called back when I found my card and was put on hold for 10 minutes. I called saying I'd be 10 minutes late due to traffic and trying to get my sick pet comfortable in my car. They said they are going to charge me an extra $50 for being 10 minutes late. At this point, I asked for my $50 back and I will go to another vet. They said they would waive the late fee. My visit for my degus eye would've cost $275 but I told them I could not afford that and to give Frodo just one of the 2 medicines. I understand businesses are in business to make money. These people are heartless. I took Frodo here 4 years ago and in their notes they said that Frodo will die because I would not pay $500 for tests on him. 4 years later, Frodo is still alive. I'm searching for a new vet to see Frodo. If anyone knows a better exotic vet hospital in Phoenix send me a message. Frodo will not be coming back here. read more

ONE MONTH UPDATE: So happy we didn't listen to this awful vet & just took our bunny home with us. We ended up treating him ourselves at home & with the help of the wonderful online community & our bunny has made a full recovery. If you don't feel comfortable with what this vet tells you, I'd strongly suggest a second opinion. She told us we had to put our bunny down or she would call animal control on us. I reallllyyy really didn't want to leave a bad review for this vet because it feels like they do genuinely care about the animals. However, I had a situation with my uromastyx that was diagnosed incorrectly. He had a strange crust on his nose that turned out to be a nasty abscess but this vet told me it was stuck shed or possibly scar tissue. It continued to not look right and I took him to a different vet for a second opinion where they had to do emergency surgery to clear the abscess as well as an aggressive antibiotic regimen. I had done a fecal with this vet but the new vet seemed pretty sure we needed to retest and sure enough, diagnosed my uro with parasites. The infection in his nose had hindered his immune system and allowed the usually harmless levels of commensals in his gut to go crazy. I really don't think this is a BAD vet. But it is frustrating to have something gotten wrong twice :( They're budget friendly especially in my situation with a student discount but if there's ever a situation that doesn't feel right I'd suggest seeking a second opinion. read more

The medicine is stupid expensive. They work with chickens but seem to only have a portal to chewy which doesn't sell to food animals to get the prescription approved, such like tractor supply. They don't have a fax machine even though they have that address number posted for pharmacies. Delayed the medicine for my birds. They weren't willing to approve the prescription through the pharmacies call, email or fax. The workers seemed to enjoy arguing over listening over the phone. I don't recommend coming here for your chickens. read more

Dr Stephanie Lamb I believe the only Certified Avian Vet here. She is excellent. They work on all exotics. I have only had the pleasure of taking my birds there. You can tell she really cares about the critters. I first met Dr Lamb at some bird meetings and she has giving me great info. I had my iguana checked in to see if there's any medication that can be provided to help her recover because she was struggling to drink water. They basically gave me a 30 second google search explanation of what I already knew after I dropped 200 dollars. They wanted an extra 400 to find the actual issue outside of their very generic explanation of what's happening. This took nearly 2 hours to come up with this very simple explanation regarding the health of my animal. The time before this, they had a study group of interns with my vet reviewing my injured bearded dragon, and they wanted to euthanize my bearded dragon. I declined, and he made a full recovery a month later. Be advised, if you need to use them as a last resort, do your research before hand. Otherwise they're going to rob you. They won't do anything to treat your animal without you signing on that you're going to pay the full amount anyways including any collection efforts or attorney fees, so don't expect to be able to get that money back anytime soon, as you should expect to be chased down for it if you feel like you didn't receive the services you asked for. From my experience, these veterinarians do not know what they're doing. They obviously have no passion for their work. Please don't make the mistake I made. I should've stuck with my other vet. read more

This was our first time taking our chicken (Mellow) to the vet. Mellow had a very fully crop that was affecting her ability to walk, roost, eat, etc. It was hard to watch her struggle when there was nothing we could do. Everything we tried didn't work. Finally, we made the call to Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital. The front desk workers are very helpful and knowledgeable. They broke everything down clearly for us so that we knew our options before coming in. They also informed us of a 10% off student discount that can be applied to your account as a student. We ended up making an appointment (which was the cheaper option vs an emergency appointment with them over the weekend). Dr. Taylor Lewis, DVM, took care of Mellow. She was very gentle with her and informative which made the entire process easier. She ended up draining her crop and gave us Metoclopramide injections to give to her at home. This substantially helped her. Before this, she was starving to death since she couldn't properly digest her food. We believe if we did not take Mellow in, she would not be here with us today. We're very thankful for Dr. Taylor Lewis and the Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital. read more

We brought our sweet rescue quail chick in and let me just say that this animal hospital's team goes ABOVE and beyond in terms of care. They were kind, thorough and patient with us and our baby. Unfortunately we lost our Bailey to pneumonia shortly after our visit, but they did absolutely everything in their power to get him healthy. I informed them of Bailey's passing to cancel our upcoming appointment, and they sent us the most heartfelt handwritten letter that brought me to tears I would absolutely recommend AEAH to anyone looking for care for their feathered babies. It's convenient that the animal hospital is open seven days a week. Lots of options for appointments and emergencies. The staff of doctors are well rounded in their areas of expertise, which is nice. You can always request specific details on the type of doctor you'd like to see and your requests are accommodated. It's nice to also have the doctors Going over feed, care, habitat, etc., to make sure that you are covering all the bases with your pet regardless of the situation that brought you to the animal hospital. Hours of operation, thoroughness of exams, offering options of follow up diagnostics and treatment so that it fits your budget and the realm of reasonability for the situation. read more

We have been bringing our tortoise here for years for his annual pre-hibernation check-up. Usually, we make an appointment and haul him to the office where we're assigned an exam room. They take measurements and run some tests, then we pay the bill and head home. During the pandemic, things changed a bit and we were met in the parking lot where we filled out the paperwork and waved goodbye as he was taken inside for the usual tests. Then he was returned to us outside with the initial analysis while we waited for the test results and handled payment. We haven't had any problems with the service or the animal, so, in that context, everything has been great. read more

I guess it's time to update my review as I've been bringing my pet chickens to AZ Exotic Animal Hospital for two years now! Oh, how time flies! I went from 4 hens to 11 hens and 1 rooster, and I have only gotten crazier about my birds over the last few years. To say I'm a crazy chicken lady would be an understatement. My chickens are my pets and I'll do anything within reason to keep them healthy and happy. After my first experience with AZ Exotic Animal Hospital (as described in my first review), I've had 5 or 6 appointments for various chicken ailments including a torn comb (red dangly thing under their chin), tapeworm infection, an egg stuck inside, and a paralyzed leg. The entire staff here is so friendly and helpful. The techs and vets really know their stuff and provide great advice. I've seen Dr. Bjornebo, Dr. Starks and Dr. Lamb, along with techs Justin and Rebecca. Unfortunately I've had to euthanize two chickens in recent months due to incurable illnesses that caused suffering. The professionalism and kindness shown to me throughout the process were remarkable. The doctors and vet techs reassured me that I was making the right decision, even if it was the hard choice. They held my hand and gave me a hug as I cried. They offered to do a foot print of each chicken and pull some of their feathers for me to keep. A few days after I put down my chickens, I received a condolence card in the mail. Same day appointments are readily available, and CARE credit is accepted (0 interest financing for a few months, depending on the total bill cost). My only complaint is their services are expensive, but that's not surprising due to the high level of care they provide and their specialized training. I'd expect similar prices for any other exotic vet, but even if I found someone cheaper I don't think I'd switch providers. I 100% recommend AZ Exotic Animal Hospital to any chicken owner and could only assume that they provide the same quality of care to other exotic animals. Thank you for your help keeping my flock healthy! And thank you for your kindness when I had to euthanize my birds. While I hope I don't have to return anytime soon, I know my future visits will be as pleasant as possible. read more

We brought our bearded dragon in today after calling all around town and Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital was the only place that could get us in right away. Our beardie's health was rapidly declining and we wanted to see if there was any way of saving her. Sadly the vet gave us the news that she was very sick and likely not going to make it. We decided to euthanize her as we did not want her to be in pain. The vet and all the other people in the office showed us so much compassion throughout the process. They made our sweet girl feel loved and made sure she wasn't in pain in her last moments. They even gave us this clay print of Fred's feet. I was pleased that the Mesa location was able to see my cockatiel on such short notice and knowing how busy they were, and the wonderful care she received. I am located on the west side of the valley and the Beardsley location was unable to see us, so we made the trek to Mesa. The only draw back I would have to say is I do believe the pricing is quite high for the average household member, as I have had many pets throughout my lifetime and my fair share of emergencies over the years, and was really set back by the charges that were put together. I had to opt out on many of the services I know my Cockatiel needed, however the $2,000.00 quote and a 25% to 50% chance she would recover seemed a bit extreme in my opinion. I have to say though, that the care staff, front office gals and the doctor, were extremely compassionate, helpful and caring for both our needs, and the facility was well kept and had a friendly atmosphere. The hospitality and availability to be seen on such short notice was a plus. I would definitely return in an emergency situation, with hopes the pricing becomes a bit more attainable for the greater majority of folks. read more

I can't recommend this vet enough. After a traumatic experience with my first bunny's neuter at a different vet, I did extensive research before taking my second bun to be fixed. I could not be happier with my decision to go with Arizona Exotic. The vet was extremely thorough during the intake process, questioning me about my bunny's diet, habitat, medical history, etc. (none of which had been asked at my previous vet). They walked me through the procedure and calmed my nerves immensely. The price was reasonable, and I opted for some optional additions for more peace of mind (pre-operation bloodwork, etc.). The pricing was transparent and itemized so I could see exactly what I was paying for. Upon picking up my bunny, the staff gave me thorough instructions for administering my bunny's medication, and even administered the first dose themselves to demonstrate the process to me. Throughout the process, all staff was extremely kind and professional. This meant the world to me as I navigated this stressful process. In short, I cannot recommend this vet enough!!
