Note: I rarely write reviews, only when a place is exceptional or resonates with me I was wary about getting a storage location -- first time doing it, worried about it feeling very faceless/corporate, not sure what I needed. I chose this location purely because I needed somewhere in Ktown. Lucky I did. Rarely do phone calls affect me (maybe I've just been feeling a little sad/down) but my call with Sharleen was so sweet and human and honest that it honestly had me wanting to cry on the phone (yea, I'm in that kind of rut). From the minute we spoke, it felt like I was talking to a friend who had my back -- she found the last unit of the size I needed, filled me in on all the promo deets and how to choose in a way that was honest and on my side as the customer, and scheduled it out so I could hold it for a week while I got ready to move. Once we got there, I saw her super busy handling calls and customers live -- but throughout she kept and upbeat attitude and you could tell she treated everyone like family (while clearly tough and has had experience dealing with crazies). Very Concerning Experience I rented a unit at this location and recently discovered that my personal lock had been removed and replaced with a red lock. After asking staff to open the unit, I found that several suitcases had been emptied and bags containing clothes, shoes, and other valuables (worth over $50,000) were missing. Staff were unable to provide clear answers and advised me to file a police report and an insurance claim, if applicable. I was later told that there had been multiple break-ins in recent weeks, that there is no overnight security patrol, and that camera coverage is limited. I am still waiting for clarification regarding when this occurred (specific dates), why I was not notified (you have my email and phone number), who authorized access to my unit to place the red lock, why the manager stated that a police report had been filed for this incident (only for me to later discover that none was filed), and why there was a sudden change of manager and other staff members after the incident. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend carefully evaluating the security measures at this location before storing valuable items and checking your unit regularly. read more

Also note their move our policy offers NO refund for unused dates; maybe a prorated rate but only if you remember to provide a 10-15 day notice in advance. I made the mistake of not reading their multipage agreement and moved out while still having to pay for about one month of storage that I was not even using! Beware they will raise the cost of your rental unit without warning within *months* of your signing up. Is this even legal? They don't tell you that they'll raise your rent to "market rate" when they gladly take your money when you first rent a unit. Extra space storage is a huge scam!!! I love the customer service here. Excellent from day one. My sister and recently upgraded our storage space for a larger one and it was so easy, no hassle and no questions asked. They gave us the first month free. It took us one day to move our boxes from our storage in level 1 to level 6. The neighborhood is iffy but don't let that scare you away. I don't know why there aren't laws for protecting customers in this type of situation but it basically makes it seem like an auction set up. They must get some auction kickback a something. I don't have a unit but my family member does, and I pay for it. They just randomly raised the rate 50 dollars for no rhyme or reason. I cannot in good faith suggest a place that randomly changes the fee with no explanation and out of the blue. Look elsewhere. i know also how much stuff my family member has and the original rate was borderline high and increasing it 50 dollars is way too high of a hike. read more

Only when I called them on this did they agree to a PARTIAL refund, and would not guarantee future increases would not happen. THIS IS A COMPANYWIDE POLICY AND TACTIC SO IT AFFECTS ALL LOCATION, NOT JUST THE ONE I RENTED FROM. They will always use the same language: "From time to time customers may be subject to a rent increase due to the competitive blah blah blah." There's no "time to time" about it. The employees are not bad the facility is. Here are a list of reasons why I cannot recommend this facility to anyone. 1) With one working freight elevator that must be operated by an employee things get a little frustrating when only one employee is working. 2) I've had a unit here for about 7 months and seen the monthly rent increase 3 times. They give about 1 months notice before the increase occurs but I now pay $30 more than when I initially signed on. 3) The hours of operation stink. The facility is only open during times that typically overlap with normal business hours and even shorter times on Sunday's. Which brings me back to the first complaint. With slim hours of operation there is always a high demand for the one elevator... 4) Dumping ability. There is only one dumpster on site hat an employee must open. Every time I've asked to use it, the dumpster is full. 5) Ease of access. Hard to get in and out of the building and maneuver around to get things in and out. So i had a client who needed storage and this was closest by with a one month free promotion which is great. However at $45 a month for a small locker seems reasonable plus fees, and when i check out I'm left with a lock and key thats practically unusable again unless a rent this specific small locker. The rules and and regulations make this place a lot less customer friendly, from experiences in the past for example trading ID for dolly's service and no trash cans for boxes or even at all on the premises can put an environmental friendly person such as my self at a crossroad. Fortunately good people and associates such as Annette made the experience a lot more enjoyable. They are flexible with late payments for at least 10 days i believe. Lot's of stiff rules because of the customers in the past apparently, i prefer more friendly experiences. read more

Pricing was the best I could find in the area and weekend hours are convenient. This was the most terrible storage. First of all, there's no elevator. Second of all, the stairs and hallways are very narrow. This storage looks more like decorations for some horror movie. Extra Space Storage on Pico is a really inconvenient facility. I might just be saying that because I've been spoiled by Public Storage, where I formerly had a unit. I sublet a unit here from a friend because I needed space to store some film equipment, so I can't comment on the signup or billing experience. The lobby doesn't have an automatic door so it needs to be propped open anytime you move anything in or out. Thankfully there are usually traffic cones nearby that can accomplish this. My entry code has worked perfectly every time, but usually I'll see other people there having issues getting inside the building. The elevator situation is terrible. There's only one tiny passenger elevator and the provided carts need to be maneuvered in at an angle to fit inside. With a cart the elevators can hold you, and maybe one more person if they're skinny and flexible. There's a 50/50 chance the elevator will land semi-flushed with the floor which is a pain if you'll be carting anything heavy; usually it's off by three or four inches. They're the old-style elevators with two doors, the inner one needs to be manually closed, so if someone uses the elevator and forgets to close it and you're on the second floor or above you might be trapped until the next time someone uses the elevator. Update: The sole passenger elevator broke at some point in 2014 and there seems to be a very ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ attitude about ever fixing it. That leaves only the large freight elevator which must be operated by an employee, and usually there's only one person working there at a time, so, say I finally manage to wrangle someone to take me up to the 7th floor I need to buzz down to request to come down, and might be waiting up there for twenty minutes for someone to respond, assuming they aren't busy on the phone. Cleanliness grade is not good. The cockroach traps on the 7th floor seem to be a permanent fixture. I find it interesting they have so many posters offering cash for referring friends, because paying he an egregious amount of money is the only way I'd lie to my friends and tell them they should store here. read more

We went to SEVERAL storage facilities to check out the available units as well as the vibe of the staff that we were going to be dealing with. We chose this place for all the right reasons. 1st - the price. :) No other space came close. 2nd - the staff. The staff was great! In particular, we LOVE Amaya! He's professional, informative and takes the safety of our stuff very seriously. 3rd - the security. They don't have an all access thing going on here. Admittedly, we didn't pay attention to the "rules" when we first moved in. Our bad! So we came after hours a couple of times, and had to deal with it...but they do this for a reason. They know, because the facility is monitored by humans as well as some cool motion detection gear, who comes, who goes...and when. I dig that. read more

I had a household emergency and had to move out a room of belongings. I went to extra space storage and they had adequate space that was dry, secure, and accessible. The location of the this ESS is in ideal because it's important to have a place near your home for storage needs. Sergio and Michelle are pleasurable and helpful staff, especially for my autistic son; however, I wish that the storage spaces were climate controlled. The heatwave, wearing a mask, and moving items is not an easy task. I felt at times that I was suffocating because the areas were too stuffy. Drinking bottled cold water helped immensely; I actually lost 5 pounds, lol and got a good workout. The lack of a dumpster is not good and is needed for your trash or things you no longer want. We customers deserve to rest in an air conditioned area instead of sitting outside of the building to cool off. Unfortunately ESS is in a neighborhood that has all sorts of people. The smell of urine is not my desire as I sit on the green iron bench to take a moving in my storage break. In the enclosed area and parking lot a dumpster and customer benches or chairs are needed so we ESS customers can take a well deserved water and moving break. Also there are no customer restrooms. Bring chairs, chilled beverages or buy them at the liquor store across the street and take care of your restroom needs prior to your move in or move out. read more

If you value your possessions, your sanity, and/or your dignity, do NOT, under any circumstances store your belongings here! The staff have all been categorically disrespectful, rude, incompetent, and unprofessional in the most extreme senses of all of those. I have been lied to - about the space itself, the elevators in the building, and the actual cost of service. I have been harassed - with endless phone calls when it's some error in THEIR system that prevented a payment from going through on time. They disabled my autopay without notifying me and have failed to send me a bill of any kind after the first month. They tried to tell me that the only way I could pay with a credit card was to physically come down to the office and sign a release, when I'd already successfully paid with my card online several times. I got several telephone calls from one employee in particular, trying to get me to come down to the office, despite the fact that I now live in another state and this is reflected in my account documentation, and who then, when I said I didn't understand what he wanted me to do because I'd been able to pay online before, he said, "Oh. Well if you want to pay ONLINE, yeah, but to pay over the PHONE, you have to sign the release." I pointed out that I had never attempted to pay over the phone, and that it was HE who kept calling ME despite my online payment having been confirmed, and he hung up on me. At every turn, whenever I've made some complaint - in calm, even tones, I have gotten the same response: A shrug and a comment that I could just take my business elsewhere if I wasn't satisfied. read more
