I love dining here whenever we visit Kansas City. A bar seat at lunch or happy hour or a dinner table if you reserve early enough both provide an indulgent experience of fresh flavors with excellent beverage choices. Kansas City crossroads area - I love love their happy hour! Half price on most of their tapas (small plates) and the cocktail drinks with funny pun names are delicious. I've ate here a few times and would recommend everything on the menu. I haven't had a tapa dish I did not like. As long as you aren't afraid to try new flavors and dishes you'll love this place! Amazing! We have eaten at Extra Virgin several times and always love the food. Tonight was the cherry on top though. We ordered deviled eggs, Larry's "must have" when available. Followed by Brussels sprouts that were served with pancetta and lemon. We also ordered roasted cauliflower, which was spicy and delicious. The grand finale was the ribeye. It was cooked to perfection with chipotle onions and pistachios. This was truly a flavor sensation. To quote my man dinner was "slap yo mama good!" Highly recommended. read more

We dined for the first time on our way to see Elton John at the Sprint Center. We made our reservations a few days in advance for 6pm. We were seated immediately upon arrival even though they were packed! The coolest part about our experience was the fact that we were able to be out the door tummies full less than an hour after walking in. The tapas come out as they're ready rather than all at once which eases the speed of service. It also guarantees you'll be eating your food hot and saves some room on the table. The sharing encouraged with the menu is great for date night. You're kind of forced to interact more, which as tired parents we need! Beebe was our server and she did a great job navigating us through the menu and helping us order the perfect amount of food for us. We shared 6 plates which was perfect! We didn't eat every bite, but it was the perfect amount of tastes to enjoy and fully satisfy our palates. Since we ordered so much I'll be brief - the beats were perfect, not too acidic with exactly the right texture. The cauliflower was simply and light. The duck tongue tacos had an overly crunchy shell which made them slightly hard to eat but the flavors blended impeccably. The jowl wasn't as tender as I'm accustomed too - it took a little extra chewing. It was my least favorite dish as I'm not a fan of marinara sauce. The parsnip bisque was perfect for cool nights. It was creamy and full of flavor. I would order that every time if the soup didn't rotate. We had mixed feelings about the brussel sprouts. They are described as charred, but the ones we arrived were very much still green and bright. They flavor was amazing - feta, bacon, and lemon, but I'm sure that char would have pushed them over the edge. All in all we had a great time. The price point is great, service is spot on. This might be my favorite spot in Kansas City (so far). I haven't eaten somewhere this good in a really long time. Their portions are perfect, not enough to make you feel yucky, but enough to make you feel full. I got there and got to have *Happy Hour* which good wise means there are certain items HALF OFF! So I made my picks and hoped for the best. Oyster Mushrooms - pretty good, they had a little bit more wang then I was prepared for, but even with that you couldn't pass them up. I would these again so they are good. Sea Urchin Spaghettini- WOWZA! There are no words for how much I enjoyed this. I literally enjoyed every bite. It was light, but creamy and flavorful. They put caviar on top for a little something extra and that must be what took it over the top for me. I mean this dish was absolutely delicious. Definitely want to go back for that!!! *HIGHLY RECOMMEND* Pear Cristada - very light and crispy, but full of flavor. It is served with a light pear ice cream which I thought was a good change (versus a standard vanilla or vanilla bean). Very tasty without being overly sweet. Side note: my waiter was Chris and he was just amazing. Very patient and willing to tell me the most popular dishes, his personal favorites, & answer any questions I had about each dish. This is one of my husband and my favorites when we're looking for a fun, yet delicious night out. The cocktails, food and service (Aaron is always our favorite server!) are all top notch! Last night there were some new seasonal items on the menu including some flash fried ribs, steamed buns with fried chicken, and a watermelon and fresh tomato salad. First off, were not extremely happy about making a reservation for 5/6 people and being set a table for 4. That being said, the food was amazing. I like to try new and exotic foods to me and Extra Virgin did not disappoint. We got the squid ink spaghetti with sea urchin, it was way better than I ever imagined. The duck tongue tacos were great. I thought there were to many nuts in the cucumber salad. The big head was amazing. We had a small dear to eat the eyeball, my daughter,my cousin and, me. Really enjoyed my meal here for restaurant week and have enjoyed dinner here as well in the past. The quality of the lunch for restaurant week was excellent, I went with crab-fried rice which had bacon in it (yummmmm), cilantro, and a poached egg on top to pierce and stir in which would normally not be my thing but was amazing. Churros for dessert were fine, nothing overwhelming. Service was polished and lovely even during (obviously) a very busy time. Crab fried rice - ugh - first taste had rancid oil notes. Server noticed I'd not eaten it and asked if I wanted it to go - seemed shocked that I didn't - said people come got that dish weekly. Server offered replacement, not much better, some chicken thigh/fig thing. Never going back. Loved this place! Everything about it! The food is unique, fun, and delicious. We made a reservation for 7:00pm on a beautiful Saturday night to celebrate a friend's birthday. We sat inside but they had awesome outdoor seating. It's all small plates and we ordered two at a time. Started with an oyster terrine and the bone marrow and split their WINE SPECIAL (!!!!) - a crisp, dry bottle of Tilia Chardonnay for only $20! WOW! Then a crostini with Arabic pork and duck tongue tacos (these were my favorite). Next, Mexican corn and Black Sea urchin pasta (sooooo creamy). Third course consisted of blue crab fried rice and avocado and fish ceviche. Finally a hangar steak and a caprese salad with house made mozzarella. We left very pleased with our choices. There were 3 of us in total and that was a good amount of food. The server was so nice and not overly chatty, and she was great about accommodating my friend's celiac disease (which, btw everything we ordered except the pasta and bread that accompanied the marrow was gluten free). Let's talk tomatoes. EV has a seasonal tomato salad that comes dressed with a delicious balsamic dressing. There's also a little buffalo mozzarella, just enough to compliment, rather than overpower the star of the dish, that being the exquisite tomato. Behold the slices of red, purple and yellow, arranged on the plate like the rare gems they are. So sad that they are barely in season for more than a month or two per year. We must cherish the blessed tomato while we can. If you don't wish to take this opportunity to do so for the last few weeks of the season, I fear we have nothing in common. Which is fine. Sigh. We can't all have good taste :P Just a note that on Mondays, you can BYOB (of vino) and they'll waive the corkage fee. Happy Hour food! I don't know about EV at different times of day but when you can come here and throw down on small plates, wine and cocktail for half price... it's on. It stays on. It never goes off. Again, you don't earn an ass the size of Texas and a belly as big as Santa Claus by eating a few bites of salad. I don't know that anything I ate rocked my world and took my virtue on prom night but for half off, I don't mind a little van knocking and over-the-sweater petting. It's half off! Half off chorizo. Half off pork belly with slaw. Sauteed tiger shrimp? It's HALF OFF! Octopus, ham empanadas, hummus... all of the goodies your happy little mouth can gorge on before 6 pm are all half off. Some were incredible (shrimp and empanadas). Some were... ok (no names). But, when you're paying half price for eats... you'll get no complaints from me. Service kicks ass. There were no 'you-cheap-asses' side-eyes from the waiter. He knows it's a down economy. He was pushing us to order more half-off food and drinks. The best part about the meal (after the shrimp)? Game 3 of the World Series - though the Mets were having their time tonight, the food and libations soothed out worried souls... 1) Pork Belly Steamed Buns - always a favorite. Tender pieces of nicely seasoned slices of pork belly in a bun in which the texture speaks wonders. Would repeat. 2) Roasted Marrow Bones - two long bone halves with the marrow (of life) ready to be scooped out and eaten on bread. Nice grilled onions. Most likely would repeat. 3) Flash Fried Padron Peppers - a twist on the typical shishito peppers. I actually like these better as my tongue sensed much more flavor. Easy to eat with one hand and no mess. Would repeat. 4) Sea Urchin Pasta - I was the last to have this bowl passed to me so not sure if the urchin pieces were big and I drew the short straw or if they were really small. Regardless, would most likely repeat. 5) Shrimp Fried Rice - another favorite. Crack the soft boiled egg and dig in. The perfectly crisp texture of the rice complements the egg and shrimp so nicely. (As you can see I'm a texture guy as well.) 6) Tres Leches cake - small, not overwhelming, and right amount of sweetness to complete the meal. 7) Old Fashioned Bourbon - smooth all the way down. My last few visits to Extra Virgin have been lacking. The owners have been very vocal about the street car construction hurting their business. I might argue it has more to do with eliminating the lunch happy hour prices and the often poor service. I can tell you that my traffic has slowed quite a bit without the deal for lunch. Recently I stopped for an after show drink with a friend. The bartender, Patrick, was sharing a meal with some people sitting at the back of the bar. I found it a little inappropriate that he was eating from the work side and probably a huge health department violation. After waiting an excessive amount if time for him to eat, he took our order. He then proceeded to make our drinks without washing his hands after eating and while chewing food. The drink menu is nice and it has a good variety. The food is still good, but the service is generally mediocre and often obnoxious. I won't be rushing back anytime soon after the latest trip. read more

I always love the drinks. Dang good stuff. My only request would be to add some more spicy cocktails, as lately i've determined that I LOVE spicy cocktails. The food? Well, it's certainly not my favorite all-around menu in town. Still, there are a couple of things I REALLY like. Their ceviche is awesome, as are the duck tongue tacos. There are other things that are good too, but those are my favorites. The atmosphere is certainly nicer than during my previous review, too. better music and lighting, and the kitchen staff seems to have learned their manners. I tend to have a lot of five star reviews in my collection, but I'm not an easy sell. I have a lot of fine (and not so fine) dining experience in KC dating back into the early 1980s when it was word of mouth, newspaper and an occasional Walt Bodine Radio Show. I tend to review plenty of venues I've dined at for years. Yelp? We're going on 15 months together (my love... I know you're a web site, but I really think there's something special between us...). I digress. Why eat mediocre and spend a lot of money? That said, I rarely go somewhere new and expect this kind of experience, although I seek it often. After two substantial lunches here in a week: one by myself at the bar (the ultimate opportunity to be ignored) and then today at a table with my wife, I'm sold. There was every chance for a let down in service, a dish that didn't quite hit the mark, a poor wine recommendation, getting ignored when you want something, a server not paying attention. Truthfully, few restaurants can pull this kind of experience off once. Twice? I'm a believer. Nine dishes in two dines, five glasses of wine--a Malbec and Côtes du Rhône between the two. What I like about the food: unexpected bursts of flavor you're not expecting, something about the preparation that makes me think the chef actually thought out the diner's experience. Top-notch ingredients prepared with care. I know, sounds crazy, but how often does something make you think, "did they actually try eating this themselves?" Example? Something as simple as the single onion ring that came with the flank steak today. I pull the knife out and think... you can't cut an onion ring with a knife because the inside is a big stringy onion. Somehow this one not only tasted great, but could be cut and shared without exploding all over the plate. And it tasted *great.* Little things like an unexpected bit of fennel in a salad where I wasn't anticipating it. The server bringing white sardines out as the first dish that seemed to spike our taste buds for that first glass of wine. I could go on. I think I will. - Skirt steak perfectly cooked medium rare without asking my preference (thank you, really! The way it should be.) with a beautiful pesto, roasted tomato. - Sauteed fennel grabbing your taste buds along with the Shrimp and Peaches. What a beautifully simple dish! - An ordinary looking red pepper stuffed with a mouth watering combination that gives pause. - The bone marrow. The fantastic, evil good, damn bone marrow. Visions of myself hooked up to a slow drip cholesterol IV. Oh right, red wine offsets. All good. - The crunch of the watermelon chilled perfectly with the arugula for a salad. Best of all, the smile on my girl's face. Service: I like this. Polite, attentive, friendly, not afraid to suggest, and out of your face. The kind of experience that the meal unfolds in front of you with service not even a part of the equation. All about you and the person you're dining with. Bravo. Can you come here and not get a 5-star meal? I suspect, but I think you'd have to assist in the process. I don't intend to have that experience and I *will* be back. I found this place on Yelp during my visit to the city. Let me tell you, the food there is really good, high quality and healthy! I ordered the mac and cheese dish which is cooked in a skillet. Yum!! I would totally get it again. I have also ordered the hanger steak without the muhamarah. I was never a fan of muhamar, but, most people generally love it. The steak comes with beans and mushrooms. Wow, those were some tasty beans and steak of course. I'm really hard to please with steak. I like it well done yet tender and moist and they managed to do that. It was very good! I came here on a Saturday for a birthday dinner with friends. Our reservations were for 7:15 and I arrived at 7:00pm, the first person there. Our table was already ready and I was seated while I waited for everyone else to arrive. As I waited, our server brought a round of water for the table, but didn't ask me for a drink order. I did flag her down about 10 minutes later for a vodka soda that quickly came out. The restaurant was very busy. The bar and the patio was fully booked and the place was full of a range patrons of all ages enjoying the food and drinks. It is a bit on the noisy side but once everyone in our party got there we just added to the din. We ordered a large variety of items on the menu to share among us. I really enjoyed the beef carpaccio. I usually cannot stand taro, but I didn't mind it with this dish. Other hits that we enjoyed were the shishito peppers, chorizo chicken thighs, chickpea fries, and the gua bao/pork belly sliders. I tried the sliders and I thought they were a little salty, but I am very biased as I'm Taiwanese and make these gua bao at least 2-3 times a month and wasn't really that impressed, but everyone else loved them. I'm a purist when it comes to certain foods :\ We also ordered three desserts to share including the upside down orange cake, the strawberry tres leche and the churros with chocolate. All of the desserts were unbelievably fantastic and I don't have much of sweet tooth. The churros were the lightest, fluffiest I've ever had and I eat them on a daily basis when I'm in Spain, these were better. Another huge highlight was our server. I didn't catch her name but she was attentive without being intrusive. Our birthday girl was looking for a particular wine and she was able to accommodate her perfectly after finding what she wanted had just come in that day. We were there for about 3 hours and never felt rushed or ignored. They let us enjoy our evening with brilliant service and great food. Btw, Monday is no corkage fee in your own wine. Love this place. Tapas bar with a twist as they have a cool aesthetic/vibe but also try to use innovative and quirky ingredients (sometimes crossing the line for me though). One of the best happy hours in town imo as many of their tapas are half price till 6. Btw, the chickpea fries are my favorite tapas here. They also have a great wood fired oven pizza night on Mondays. They change up the pizza every week. Usually awesome but sometimes they try too hard and get too "innovative" on ingredients. Frankly, I would normally give them 5 stars but the pizza last night underwhelmed me. Have to say that's the anomaly though. This tapas restaurant/bar is new and is a work in progress. But it really should be appreciated for what it is offering to Kansas City. To begin with, tapas in Spain are not a tradition in restaurants. They are in bars, and the traditional way to have tapas in Spain is to have a few at this bar, a few at that bar, etc. Well, Extra Virgin indeed is centered around a bar, in the true Spanish tradition. Indeed, if you decide to have an entire meal there, the price of the tapas will add up, and you may be looking at a rather high bill. But do not fail to appreciate what Michael Smith is offering here --- tapas of the very highest quality. The preparations are not exclusively Spanish, but more representative of the Mediterranean in general. I was a bit puzzled by the many preparations with butter instead of olive oil: rather odd for a tapas restaurant with the name "extra virgin." Sorry, but I've never head of "extra virgin" butter. Clearly Michael Smith is not sticking with any one country's style and is producing his own version of a tapas restaurant. If you really want a traditional dining room experience, rather than the tapas bar experience offered in the main dining area, ask to be seated in the private dining room upstairs. If there is no private party there, you might be able to get a table in that room. If you really want to do it the Spanish way, sit at the bar, have a glass of wine or beer and one small tapas plate. Then leave for somewhere else for the rest of your dinner. They will not think that you are cheaping out. On the contrary, they will figure that you are an authentic tapas snob, just arrived from Madrid. I went there this evening, and I was impressed --- very impressed! read more

Hubby & I gave this restaurant a 4 stars and daughters gave it 5!! I heard of this restaurant for a while but just couldn't get everybody together to go. Finally, yesterday was the day for us to go before daughters heading back to schools. We came in at 1700 and took the advantage of Happy Hour 1/2 price deals. As you can see from my photos, we ordered 14 tapas (3 grilled oyster mushrooms) and 2 dolces for 4 and we all enjoyed it very much. All the tapas we ordered were tasted good, but we loved Grilled Oyster Mushrooms, Chips, Olives, Meatballs, Mussels more. I am very happy that we only spent $75.00 (before tax & tips) on Happy Hour, if we go at regular dinner time, it would cost us at least $140 for what we had yesterday. We love tapas but hardly find a good tapas restaurant here at Kansas City. We are very happy to find Extra Virgin and we will definitely come back again. As to service, our server Ben was good, we had good experience with him. But the hostess gave us " a little bit cold & not care about you " feeling when she greeted us. This was my first dine in post Covid quarantine, and it was a great choice! Went with friends to celebrate a birthday. Since still in a pandemic there are no walk in seating, only reservations. I'm not always a fan of tapas, but I loved this one! I had 3 favorite tapas and a runner up. 1. They had a fried soft shell crab that was amazing, wish it could always be on the menu! 2. There was a cucumber peanut salad that accidentally got delivered to our table, but was one of my favorite things! I'm dreaming of having the first two dishes again. 3. As I learned, it's definitely a walk from downtown Kansas City (~20 mins. unless I walk slow), but for Happy Hour? Worth the trip. Since I eat with my eyes, I ended up with 4 tapas, although 2 would have suffice. Big portions. I had the heirloom tomatoes with goat cheese, bone marrow, mussels, and prosciutto. I swear, there must have been 15 slices of prosciutto -- and I couldn't finish it all! I definitely recommend coming for the Happy Hour (or more like Happy Day considering it's almost 6 hours long). Reading other EV reviews, it seems like a lot of people went several times before writing a review. Maybe it's because there is so much to choose from, and it's probably why I'm in that group. Now, listen to this, Michael Smith, I ate here Friday BECAUSE of the streetcar. We got on in the River Market with no specific lunch plan whatsoever; wanting to get off before all the crowds at Union Station, Extra Virgin at the 20th & Main stop was a no-brainer! Over several years, I've never had anything I didn't care for, and some things that were stellar. Some of my favorites over the years: pork street tacos, posole, deviled eggs, and the barrel-aged Manhattan. This time, we shared poblano mac 'n' cheese, hanger steak and frites, and the famous fig-filled chicken thighs. All were superb, especially the sauce on the thighs-we'd finished the chicken, and I about slapped the server's hand away when he tried to take the skillet away before we'd finished sopping our fries in that sauce. I was a little disappointed that the noon-6 half-price tapas is a thing of the past, but there are still enough affordable dishes that you can nosh your way through a leisurely lunch without breaking the bank.
