I think Ezell's Famous Chicken is great! This family owned business started in Seattle over 35 years ago. They have many locations throughout Washington and one in Oregon. Oprah Winfrey said Ezell's was her favorite fried chicken and they catered one of her birthday parties in Chicago! My friends wanted to do a potluck at Ravenna Park, so I decided to bring some fried chicken from the Wallingford location. I placed my order online ahead of time and the website was really easy to use. I ordered the Famous Chicken - Family Size with 16 Pieces. For flavor you can choose Original, Spicy, or Half & Half and for meat type you can choose white, dark, or mix. I went with Original and Mixed pieces. It also comes with 8 bread rolls! I think Ezell's chicken is delicious. The coating tastes good, the meat is juicy, and the pieces are huge. The rolls are also pretty tasty. They are very soft and go well with the chicken. The Wallingford location has a big parking lot, which I always appreciate. Inside, it is basically a big take out stand, so there is no dining area or customer bathroom. It was a little confusing because there are three windows, but they do have paper signs with more info. Since I already paid online, I checked in at the middle window. I was about 10 minutes early, but the staff worked hard to get my order ready quickly. I definitely recommend this place and next time I plan to get some sides. They offer mashed potatoes and gravy, bbq beans, creamy slaw, potato salad, mac & cheese, and corn. They also have peach cobbler and sweet potato pie for dessert! read more

The Ezell's in Wallingford has really good food and fast service. As far as ambiance goes, this is a takeout only location. I think this is their best location. The food is hot, fresh, and tender. Their gizzards are fantastic. The Cajun fries and spicy chicken are my favorites. Their spicy okra is tasty as well. The chicken tenders were a bit over cooked and too tough/dry for my taste. I have tried several of their side dishes and they are all great compliments to their main courses. I think their prices are fair, and the quality of their food is so much better than a fast-food restaurant! The Wallingford location can get really busy between 5-7 pm. After living not but half a mile from an Ezells for several years and never having tried it...I figured it was time. Sadly though, I did not live up to the hype. Mediocre at best. The chicken strips while lightly breaded and crisp...was overcooked and one chicken strip was almost too chewy to eat. Fries = soggy mess. While yes, I did get it to go, I don't live far away. Not a single fry was crispy. These need some work. The rolls... nothing great and came cold. Tasted like any average roll you could get at the store. Dipping sauces...via hidden valley brand. So after being a regular customer here for a long while, I had several bad experiences (weird, tough meat in the chicken tenders on multiple visits), so I left an honest, negative review on Yelp. The owner sent a message asking me to email them so they could try to make it right. I obliged, and sent a note. Crickets...never got a reply. For some reason I decided to go back to the restaurant a couple weeks ago (I know, I know, my mistake) and ordered a 1/2lb spicy tenders combo. I got home and could just immediately tell there was not a half pound of chicken in my basket. Before taking a bite, I threw the tenders on a kitchen scale, and it read just under 163g. Don't worry, I'll do the conversion for you: that's barely 1/3 of a pound...5.7 of the 8oz required to be an honest 1/2lb of chicken. So I emailed the business again (I'm a slow learner, okay?). For a second time, zero response to my complaint, which was backed by photo evidence. I don't think I need to say much more to show you just how much Ezell's cares about their customers these days. Came in on a weekday and there was no line! Staff was really nice, greeted us when we walked in and reviewed our order before finalizing it. When the food was ready they double checked it with us again! We were running errands so ate in the car right away. Those rolls are so good, ate mine plain and it was super fresh. Mashed potatoes and mac and cheese tasted homemade at least compared to other chains. Got chicken strips and they satisfied my craving and some. Shocked some reviewed as dry cause they were super moist and pulled apart easily. Spicy is not that spicy for anyone wondering. And PLEASE get the bleu cheese, its homemade and the best I ever had. I have to give it to Ezell's for customer service -- I was not happy with my experience, and sure enough, the general manager had the kindness to extend a free gift card! If you're from the South, this is the closest thing to Southern fried chicken you can get at a fairly affordable price point! I've found that I prefer Korean fried chicken more in Seattle, but these have always run the more expensive end of the gamut compared to Ezell's! PRAISE: 1. The Bleu cheese sauce here is great! 2. The chicken when freshly cooked is 9/10 times juicy and moist 3. Good customer service, servers here are polite for fast food standards NOT SO GOOD: 1. Seasoning can be a bit bland. 2. Whenever I crave for fried chicken, this is the place to order. I usually get takeout orders from Ezell's and they are super fast to get their order ready; warm and crispy upon arrival. I ordered 4 pieces with 2 sides and it was enough to serve two people; totally worth the price. We got cajun fries and mac & cheese. The cajun fries weren't cooked all the way for half of it so it was crisp on the outside but still a bit hard/frozen on the inside. Mac & cheese was a great side with nice texture of the macaroni and hefty amount of cheese that melts in your mouth. The fried chicken was delicious and flavorful without being too salty. Ezell's is a Seattle classic. You can smell it down the block and it'll be hard to resist stopping in. It can get super busy so be prepared to wait for a bit if you don't order ahead. I found that getting a regular chicken piece is way better than the tenders, which can sometimes be a bit dry. There was once piece that I got that was SO good, and really made me think of when I would go to the original Ezell's in the Central District. I haven't been back to the original for years now so I'm not sure how they compare! Better than 3 stars, maybe not quite 4? The chicken itself was very good, with great breading and nice, juicy meat. It could have used a little more seasoning, though. I've never been one to use sauce of any kind on my fried chicken so I notice these things. The answer doesn't always have to be to use sauce for more flavoring! I was excited for the mac and cheese, which was "fine" as it's really hard to make mac and cheese bad, but again, not much flavor. Mashed potatoes were ok as well, also lacking in flavor. Simply the best American style fried chicken I've had so far! Skin so crispy and meat so tender, not over-seasoned but so flavorful I had one original chicken wing and one spicy chicken thigh, both so tasty! My preference is original over spicy - the spiciness was not very strong so it didn't taste very different. I also really loved their fresh baked rolls. Yum yum. I tried controlling myself from eating too much carbs late at night but these rolls were so good... their crinkle fries and kernel corns were delicious too. Service was fast and the price was very reasonable - $15 fed two people (we got 4 pieces of famous fried chicken half and half, with two fresh baked rolls, crinkle fries, and kernel corns). I appreciate being busy, but this can't be a new scenario on a Friday night so you think they'd have figured out a visual designation. I wasn't sure what to really expect, but I feel like I had pretty high expectations because a bunch of my friends always have Ezell's and say it's really good. I ordered the cajun fries and fried chicken, and some sides like the creamy cole slaw, and mashed potatoes. The fries were probably the best thing I had, because they were very, very crispy, and seasoned perfectly! The cajun seasoning elevated the fries to a whole other level , and made them taste really good. On the other hand, and cole slaw was alright. It was kinda bland, and one dimensional, I just wasn't really into it. Now, the main course of Ezell's famous fried chicken! If I'm being honest, I was a little disappointed with the chicken. I really expected more. It still had a nice texture, but it was kind of bland. Plus, most of the chicken was sort of dry and I want to say a little tough. I still finished every chicken, and licked it to the bone, but I feel like it didn't satisfy to my liking. I would definetly want to try Ezell's again and see if they can improve, but I did hear that Ezell's is really good when you eat it when it is freshly made, but I didn't eat it right away because we ordered on Grub Hub. So I guess the time that the food sat waiting to be picked up, then dropped to our house may have affected the experience? My sales team & I ordered lunch to go from Ezell's in Wallingford. The last time I had Ezell's was at the Downtown Renton location & it was very disappointing. I never tried this location before so my hopes wasn't very high due to my experience at the Renton location. I got what I usually get which is the spicy chicken tender combo. Going in having low expectations, I was honestly very surprised when I took a bite out of the fresh baked rolls. It felt like I just took a bite out of a buttery cloud from heaven. It was honestly the best rolls I have ever had. Following up from the rolls, I had high hopes for the chicken at that point. Taking a bite of the chicken, I was very satisfied w/ the breading & flavor. It reminded me why I love Ezell's in the first place & made me forget about the disappointing experience I had w/ the Ezell's near my apartment. Not sure if the northern locations is better or I just ordered during a good time, but I would definitely go out of my way to come to the Ezell's Wallingford location before I'd ever go to the one by my apartment. My meal was so bad, I considered not writing a review at all because I rarely write 1-star reviews. But, I thought it over and figured I should write one since I didn't want others to make the same mistake and waste their money. My hubs and I tried the 4-piece fried chicken dinner with two rolls and a side of fries. It was a regular weeknight at around 5pm when we got our takeout. There were four people in line with us--not a busy time. The chicken was crisp but greasy and barely seasoned. We got the original, not the spicy, but that doesn't mean we don't want any salt on it. It was so bland, I wondered, what was the point? The rolls had a strange fermented flavor that was also sickeningly sweet. We couldn't place it. It wasn't sugar. Was it honey that had gone bad? Don't know. Just know we each took a bite and then chucked both rolls into the compost pail. Lastly, I'm a fries fanatic. I love fries any time, any day. Even if they aren't that good, I'll still eat them. However, these fries were so dry, cold, limp, and tasteless that I ate just a few and chucked the rest into the compost. What the heck happened to Ezell's?!? I remember when they just had one shop in the CD and were known for miles for great fried chicken. So me and my husband had to make sure to stop by and try them out on our first day in Seattle. Location: This place is a Walk Up so don't expect to sit down and eat unless your going to eat in your vehicle. Chicken: Crispy, Flavorless and taste like it was cooked in old grease. Sides Dishes: Corn - Was corn add salt & pepper or sugar if you like. BBQ Beans - Out the can was not made from scratch. Mac & Cheese - I'm a Mac & Cheese person so I really didn't care to much for it. Mashed Potatoes with Gravy - Average nothing special. Bread Roll: Was the best part.!.!.!.!.! We didn't get a chance to enjoy our food due to the disappointment and flavor so we were hoping to find a homeless person downtown to give it to and is very "THANKFUL" we found two of them. Very disappointing. I was a visitor to the city and the worst chicken ever. It was very dark and fried hard. Dark off appearing breading is usually a sign of old cooking oil. The sides were not good either. Someone from the restaurant did reach out apologizing after my review on DoorDash, stating that they wanted to 'make things right'. As a disclaimer, korean fried chicken is my absolute favorite type of fried chicken, but even so, I don't think my experience at Ezell's lived up to the hype. I do think that this is the best southern-style fried chicken near the University District, but the chicken tasted pretty average to me. I actually had to cook up some extra stir-fry with whatever I had left in my fridge as a side because I was dissatisfied with the beans and fries that I was provided. I went on a Friday night and it was packed. There was a line, and I had to wait for about 20 mins before receiving my order. Note that this is a window and there is no designated seating area! I would recommend that you take a look at the menu ahead of time, since they don't pass out menus, and it was hard to read the menu they had, especially with such a long line. I came in on 4/7 around 8 pm, and unfortunately, they served my order with a huge side of attitude! I ordered online, and I noticed 2 pick-up windows. One said "Pick-Up" and the other that "DoorDash Orders." I waited at the regular pick-up window because I didn't have a DoorDash order. The man and woman behind the counter (both White) were busy filling orders, and I waited patiently since I figured they'd help me soon. I wasn't acknowledged once during the wait. I didn't get an "I'll be right with you," though they saw me. After a while, the guy came over to the window, and I thought he was going to ask me the name on the order and help me. Nope! I was wrong! Instead, he came over and said, in an annoyed tone, "Can you come to the DoorDash window." I pointed to the pick-up sign above me and said I didn't have a DoorDash order. He said, "it doesn't matter." Any logical person would go to the pick-up window to pick up their pick-up order, but in his mind, that was unreasonable and annoying, I guess? He could have easily just brought my order to me and saved both of us time. Instead, he insisted that I walk a few feet to the DoorDash window. I've picked up my order at that pick-up window once before, so I don't know why picking up my order from the pick-up window was so unreasonable tonight! If you don't want customers to pick up their orders at that pick-up window anymore, perhaps moving the sign and having only 1 pick-up window is a good idea! Also, being pleasant about it and saying, "Sorry, could you please come to the other window?" would have made a difference. Instead, I felt like I was made to jump through extra hoops to pick up my order. I had even tipped 20% on my online order, and I wish I could take it back because of this experience! There are many other restaurants with excellent customer service, so I won't be back unless I know that their customer service has improved. The food was also just okay, and it needed salt. Honey mustard is Hidden Valley brand. BBQ ranch was ok. The spicy chicken had a good kick to it! Chicken was nice and crispy. Mac and cheese was alright. Baked beans were good. Fries were good too. I knew nothing about this place, it was just a random stop on a late night as we were heading in, and I just needed some quick food. The sign from the outside was big and bright, and the reviews (on Google) were many and pretty good. Again, just wanted something quick, and fried chicken seemed to be able to satisfy that need. It was probably 11pm already, and they were still open, so that was a plus. There were people lined up at this time as well, so I could tell already that it was a popular late night option. The menu consisted of fried chicken, regular and spicy (you could choose either, or half and half), biscuits and several sides. The most popular sides, based on a quick browse through the reviews, seemed to be the cajun fries and mac n cheese. You could order the chicken alone, or for a very minimal upcharge, add one or two sides. First night in Seattle, only there for a few days, may not make it back here, go big or don't go at all....I got those 2 sides. Overall the food was very average. The chicken was missing that salty flavor and the Mac n cheese wasn't far off from the Kraft box mix. The fries were good, but the biscuits were nothing compared to the overrated reviews they received.
