Overall great, I'm still trying to place what herbs or spices they use in their ground meat (maybe cumin or coriander), that give the balls an earthier taste that somewhat overpowers the sweetness you might crave from the tomato sauce. Entirely a preference, but for me it dulls the flavor, while for others I can see how they're special. I will say the perfectly cut square of Parmesan laid over the dish really enhanced it. Simple is better when it comes to meatballs and sauce. For our mains, there was no question we were ordering the lasagna and I also went out on a limb and ordered the lamb shank. The lasagna is delicious. No notes there. It's what we came for. The lamb shank itself was also delicious, tender, meaty, and fresh. Though it's supposed to come with gnocchi (which I was excited for when ordering it, just imagining rosemary garlic butter gnocchi with shredded lamb shank ready to get messy ) but there were maybe 5 pieces of gnocchi in the whole dish. The ratio of shank to gnocchi left me feeling like a rich king in meat and poor peasant in starchy carbs. The rest of the dish was all vegetables and while tasty, there were entirely too many pearl onions, which in the dark were stealthily disguised as gnocchi, and gave me surprising bursts of onion juice with each bite that I'd then need my margarita for as a palate cleanser. Overall it was a great dish, but I'm thankful we had stuck to our guns and ordered the lasagna to scratch the itch for starch the lamb shank left me with. Next time I'd like to try the Farfalle Di Mar and the Tiramisu. This was not my first visit to Sociale and it won't be my last.

However after yesterdays experience, it will be a while before I stop in. Walked in with no reservation for two people at 6:38pm yesterday, place is virtually empty, maybe one or two small groups, essentially 90% of seating was available. We ask for a table for two, they say does the bar work, we say sure, knowing its clearly possible reservations for 6:45 or 7 might be coming to fill up the place. I kid you not, the next 4 groups that walk in all also do not have reservations and are seated at tables, at times the staff even separated tables of four to make them two to accommodate. Real head-scratcher, and very disappointed in the willingness to accommodate some guests but not all. It's really a systemic problem in New York City, living and dying by what the IPad tells them, so I get it. However as regulars that come in twice, sometimes three times a month it was very off putting and will definitely make us hold on our next plans to visit and enjoy their great menu.

The orecchiette was slightly salty although very good a the Fritto misto was very yummy and made me super full! The food is good and the vibes are great so I would give it a 5 stars even though it's a tad bit too salty for me all over. The most fun thing about this really is ordering from the dessert cart! They'll come up with an old wooden cart with all the different selections they have and we got the tiramisu and they gave us their special as a gift (very generous thank you!) their pasticciotto which is a pastry puff with cherries and vanilla custard. I had a sirloin steak in a wonderful cream sauce. The steak was served sliced. I couldn't finish the steak because I ate a couple of pieces of bread with the sauce. The promising Ankimo Mousse was more style than substance: a vague pani puri-type shell that should've just been filled with the mousse instead of sitting hollow below jellied strawberry. But I don't need to come all the way to Gowanus for good salt bread. Then we shared three pastas: the too-salty Girelle, the decently savory Waves Mentaiko, and the too-sweet Mafaldine Okonomiyaki.
