I've never eaten in the restaurant before. I've always gotten take out. Portions are good, flavor is yum for almost everything I've eaten. A solid place for HK cafe food. Parking can kinda be sketch so be careful! They do charge you for take out bags but if you come with your own reusable bags, they won't charge you. I would expect service is what you would typically expect from a Chinese restaurant, not overtly friendly or polite. They're just there to get the job done. Pro-tip: they are cash only! read more

Fairwood Cafe is located inside the Rosemont Square Shopping Center and serves up Hong Kong Style cuisine. There is stiff competition in this area, with Venus Cafe being across the street, Cousin Cafe in Newark, Baby Cafe in Union City, Local Cafe in Fremont and A+ Hong Kong Cafe in Warm Springs. Went here for happy hour recently and it just doesn't seem to be all that worth it. Everything on the happy hour is $11, and you get a free hot drink. You can upgrade to an iced drink for $0.99. However, I have to say the portion size for the happy hour is such a small portion, it's not worth $11. One thing we ordered was the Salt & Pepper Squid, and for $11, the portion was so small! It was totally not worth what was paid for. The food here overall is decent, but the prices are just on the higher side compared to some of the other Hong Kong style cafes in the area. I'd rather go to A+ Hong Kong Cafe in South Fremont, and the food is cheaper, and the portions are much more reasonable. Also, they have surcharges here, such as charging $0.10 for bags. I usually only come here for convenience, since it is a late night spot. The food is not the best, but it is also not the worse I had. RAW CHICKEN My family and I have been regularly going here for a year, we loved it UNTIL last week. I decided to try the baked chicken and pork chop with the gravy and rice, luckily I tried the pork chop first and it was good, I told my brother to try it too but he stopped and asked me if I ordered chicken or fish, I said chicken, he pointed out to me that the chicken was RAW! It was hard to see because it was covered in gravy! The food was far from being good. My wife had sweet and sour chicken with the sauce on the side. The chicken was dry as if it had been cooked earlier and then the dish made when ordered. I have had calamari at different restaurants, enjoyed the meal, but today found this place used more coating on the calamari than anything I have ever had before. More like 1 oz of calamari to 2 lbs of flour for the coating to deep fry. Never again will we put ourselves thru such sub grade Chinese food, that was served to us today. This is a pretty solid Hong Kong style restaurant. I often go here when I'm craving Hong long milk tea. One of my favorite dishes is the salt and pepper tofu. I think this is one of the best spots for that. I recently tried their sizzling black pepper beef noodles and it was very good. My boyfriend loved their wonton soup. The food here has gone downhill. First of all, it's a restaurant that opens till midnight and in this day and age you should have Square or Clover as your POS system and they only accept cash. The Steak with Black Pepper Sauce is delicious, too. The steak is soft even it's well done, the black pepper sauce is rich and savory. The Hong Kong Style Iced Milk Tea is instant. The menu had many unique items that one will not find in other Asian restaurants but one that I wish would be in more was in this one; Hainan Chicken! I opted for this instead of the congee I thought I needed. Hainan Chicken: The meal included 2 scoops of perfectly seasoned rice. It was a little more glutinous than I've had but it was sooo good. There must have been half of a chicken in the plate because I had to work at not wasting any of it. It was perfectly seasoned, no pink skin, and cut in perfect bite size. Authentic for sure but I just wished that the sugar was mixed in right from the start instead of us having to mix them after. However, in no way is this a deal-breaker but do expect it to be on the stronger end. The main takeaway for this place is that it is an "authentic" styled Hong Kong Cafe starting from the menu to the food. For the critics out there I understand their negativity but I would caution on the price versus value. To us, the prices they sell versus value is way beyond just the bang for the buck. HK cafes are few and far in the South Bay (or at least to my knowledge) and for the most part, a lot of them are not great. I stopped by since my usual spot Venus Cafe closed early and I was pleasantly surprised. We decided to get the Baked Rice w/ Spam Ham and Corn as well as the Stewed Beef Rice Plate. As for the Baked Rice, the cream sauce along with the corn bits complemented the savory spam well. It was perfectly baked and the cheese formed a nice crust on top that went into each bite. The Stewed Beef came out extremely quickly but did not lack in quality. The meat was extremely tender and seemingly melted immediately in my mouth. It was pretty creamy and definitely satisfied my appetite. One last thing, the HK style milk tea was a homerun. Definitely tasted authentic and had the perfect balance of bitter + sweet.
