Came by in the afternoon this past Sunday, and there was a small line at the entrance (inside Lion food center). The wait to order was about 15 minutes with just 4-5 people ahead of me. And I liked observing how they chop up the meats right in front of you. I ordered the roasted duck rice plate for takeout, and it was juicy and delish, a good amount of meat on the bones, and just enough fat to add flavor. But the ratio of rice to meat was way off. They are really generous with the rice, as well as the cabbage. I had a satisfying meal. However, I would never dine in here, even though they have tables and seating inside. The place is just really run down and not very inviting. The cleanliness is questionable. The plastic utensils were cheap and flimsy too. Honestly, unless I'm in Oakland, I feel like the options from the East Bay down to San Jose are very limited in options for Chinese BBQ and bbq plates along 880. So it becomes a huge struggle when I'm leaving the South Bay and I just want something to fill those cravings. Luckily, Newark has some hole in the wall gems and New Hwong Kok was that. I stopped by in the afternoon and there was still duck, bbq pork, and soy sauce chicken available. I wasn't looking for anything too fatty so I skipped the duck and got to bbq pork and soy sauce chicken combo rice plate. It's okay if you can't order in Chinese because they already have combo options for you to chose from or you can point! Prices are more than fair for the amount of protein you are getting and I was pretty pleased with the flavor. This is a small store in the Lion plaza, but seems to be pretty popular. Whenever we come here, my husband speaks to them in Cantonese. The service is quick and fast. We've had the bai tang gao (white sugar cake) and egg tarts. The egg tarts are pretty good when they're made warm and fresh. The white sugar cake is thin and doesn't really have much of the honey comb structure. Recently, we tried their roast duck and roast pork. For some reason I expected them to be hot/warm but they were not. The roast park had an inconsistent crunch, being crunchy and super hard to chew. The food was tasty but the portions were a bit small as we got a lot of rice but not that much meat. The roast chicken had a couple of bones in it and had a bit of a rubbery texture but the char siu tasted pretty flavorful. The pork buns were good and curbed my cravings but didn't have enough char siu filling in it. The seating area here wasn't very clean and the tables looked like they weren't cleaned in a while. Located inside Lion Supermarket in Newark. Came on a Sunday around 1pm and there was a long line. It took me 15 minutes to order and I ordered the roast duck and the bbq pork steamed buns (siopao). The roast duck smelled so good , I bought the roast duck for my family and they said it was very delicious. The pork bun was big and tasty. The pork bun is actually cheaper than when I buy from Filipino bakeries and the bread bun is softer. Paid around $34 for the whole roast duck and 3 pork buns and I paid with a credit card. This is a typical dirty Chinese deli like in Chinatowns everywhere. Those are actually the best Chinese places so not knocking it. The lady here is really rude. More rude than the regular rude Asian shop staff rude. This is my go to for a classic bowl of HK style wonton soup noodles with roast duck. Pro tip- they tend to put the choice roast duck pieces in the soup (vs selling by the pound) for some reason. They also have excellent crispy roast pork and other roast meats, as well as a very good congee. The everything bun is packed with delicious meat and a big chunk of egg. There's a location in Milpitas, but that location doesn't sell duck. Prices here are half that of dim sum places in San Mateo and Santa Clara county. The shui mai was fine, a mixture of spinach and shrimp in a semi transparent dumpling skin. Good portion of shrimp. The beef shui mai was packed with meat and little filling. Sign of a good dumpling. The deep fried meat dumpling similarly was packed with pork, and tightly closed with a thin skin of wrapping. Liked the rice with pork in bamboo leaf, as haven't had Chinese sausage in ages. Wife didn't care much for the sticky rice in lotus leaf with Chinese beans. The shrimp dumplings were the highlights of the dim sum, freshly cooked shrimp packed expertly in a won ton skin wrapping, before being steamed. Had to restrain my wife from eating it all, saving some for the other guests at the table. This store featured roasted duck, which while tasty, is pricey to me, who is not a duck fan. Also had sliced chicken and sliced fried pork , which went well with the white rice and bok choy which our host cooked. For dessert had custard tarts, bread with custard, and custard with coconut filling. Liked them all except for the bean filled breading - I have my wife sample it before I taste it. Price is average I would say. The roast chicken in the image was $13.54. It's plenty of food and enough to share between 2-3 people. Super tender as well. Aside from deli they also offer good dim sum options. Got the shrimp and chive dumplings again which are super delicious. Recommend. Currently I don't believe they are offering dine-in services. Disappointing experience -- Poor service, and mediocre food I had the unfortunate experience of visiting "New Hwong Kok" yesterday, and I must say that I feel utterly deceived by their Chinese name, as it is the same as the famous "Good Mong Kok Bakery." Unfortunately, the service and food at this establishment were far from satisfactory. Upon perusing the menu, I was particularly interested in trying the dried fish and peanut congee, which was clearly listed. However, the cashier lady responded in a condescending manner, informing me that they only served one type of congee--century egg and pork congee--which wasn't even mentioned on the menu. Disappointed and unwilling to eat century eggs, I decided to explore other options. I settled for an egg tart and the sticky rice in lotus leaf (Lo Mai Gai). It was less than $10, and I was prepared to pay for it using my credit card. However, my plans took an unexpected turn when the lady at the counter informed me that they had a minimum charge of $10 for credit card payments. This policy was not clearly stated anywhere in the establishment, leaving me feeling frustrated and inconvenienced. Reluctantly, I decided to add half portion of the soy sauce chicken to meet the minimum charge requirement, which costed me another $12. When I inquired about getting some minced ginger to complement the chicken, I was astounded by the response. The lady gave me one which is kind of small portion for half a chicken, so I politely asked if I could get another one. Then she curtly informed me that I would be charged an additional $0.50 for an extra serving, despite the fact that I had just spent $20+ and she's well aware that I don't have any cash with me. It was disheartening to see such a lack of flexibility and understanding when I could have just canceled the order instead of making extra purchase. Finally, I arrived home and eagerly tried the soy sauce chicken, only to be met with immense disappointment. It was the most overcooked and dried-out chicken I have ever encountered in the SF Bay Area. The quality fell far short of expectations and left me wondering why I even bothered to spend my time and money at "New Hwong Kok." In conclusion, my first visit to "New Hwong Kok" was an unpleasant experience marred by poor service, mediocre food, and an unmentioned credit card policy. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone seeking authentic Chinese cuisine or a pleasant shopping(dining) experience. Hit or miss depending on what you order. I usually come here for the bbq roast pork or baked salted chicken, as well as their frozen HK style wonton (thinner wrap, meatier pork shrimp filling with a crunch) for quick weekday lunches. On the rare occasion when there's no line, I'll always stop by and see what dim sum or baked goods they have. This time there were the traditional Chinese New Year fried goodies which I wasn't expecting at all. Ahh and I was looking for these prior to new year too! The cookies were $4 and the fried dessert dumplings were $11, these take a lot more effort to make. Roast pork I got 2lbs the meat part was ok, skin was soggy & chewy. $12/lb, too expensive too. Lotus leaf sticky rice $4ea, lots of rice, some little meat, little Chinese sausage. Tasted ok. Chive dumplings almost $2/order with 3 in a order. Dumpling skin too thick & chewy, I just like eating the insides little bit of shrimp & chives. I won't get this again. Found this spot by accident and decided to try the soy sauce chicken and steamed chicken to go. What a night-and-day difference compared to Costco's rotisserie chicken. Price aside, the chicken here is leaner, not as giant, and has a rich, flavorful taste with a firm texture, reminiscent of heirloom chicken you'd find in Asia. When we want bbq ducks, we come here to get them, but they also have bbq duck wonton noodles that's inexpensive and quite tasty. We think this has new owner because most of the old workers no longer there or at least we don't see them. Before COVID we could sit down and have a very nice and inexpensive dinner with the family when we didn't want to cook. The kids would order bbq duck with rice and I and my wife would order roasted duck noodles soups. My son loves the wonton noodles here since he doesn't like roasted duck much. Everyone is happy when we sit down here. Now, there's no dine in, only to go. Last week we decided to order to go, although we don't believe in to go soups because by the time we got home it's no longer hot.
