This place is a hidden gem. The sushi is actually excellent. $6.95 for a solid quality rainbow roll? Are you kidding me? It costs $8 at publix, and $12-$16 at most sushi joints. Simply the best deal on sushi in Atlanta. The Chicken plate is really nice as well. Seaweed Salad and a little hummus for the sides makes a very healthy tasty meal. One of those unknown must try's. When I first moved to Atlanta I asked my med school friends if they knew where to get some good quality, inexpensive sushi. Someone replied Falafel king. And I go, no, no, you must have misunderstood me. I mean. I said sushi. SUSHI. you know, with the raw fish and all that? They go, yeah, I heard you. go to Falafel king. So I think, man, this sucks. Atlanta's sushi selection is so bad the best place around here for it is a middle eastern hut. shit. So one day I go in, and order the sushi. surprise ensues. The eel is deliciously sweet, the rice is so fresh it's still warm from the rice maker. It's also cheap. Like, $4-6 for most rolls. So for a long time, all I did was order their sushi, but recently I have tried their falafel sandwich. Man, it's another delicious steal at under $4 a pop. Freshly heated pita, freshly fried falafel, fresh toppings. Heaven. What else makes this business special is that it is the definition of a mom and pop shop. Run by an immigrant couple, they work with one other assistant to serve us hungry students. The wife fries the falafel and takes the orders, the husband rolls the sushi, the assistant fills the rest of the sandwiches and takes care of loose ends. It is such a small operation that this summer when they were out of town they closed the business for two weeks. It almost killed me. But we endure. cause they are the real deal, so think about that next time you are stuck in that long lunch line. read more

This is some of the best falafel I've ever had. It's really crispy on the outside, so it has a nice crunch. I'd skip the schwarma and stick with the falafel. Downside: the place is small and it's tough to find a place to site, service is slow, and they forgot about my friend's sandwich and he had to argue them into giving him one. There might be places in Atlanta with better falafel (likely at much higher prices) and there are definitely better restaurants in which to sample sushi, but Falafel King in Emory Village is does both very well in terms of taste and cost. It's a smaller than small location with little decor to speak of, but the tables, counter space, and outside seating are adequate and make good use of the limited square footage. The owners are incredibly sweet, and the staff (the couple who own it plus a minimal kitchen crew) is very efficient. I've never had a long wait, even when the place is packed with hordes of hungry Emory college students. When not catering to the lunch crowd, Falafel King is generally a low traffic restaurant where you can dine-in or take home your food almost immediately after ordering. In terms of the menu, Falafel King offers falafel, shawarma & hummus platters. Platters are the best deal as you get 2 sides with what amounts to everything you'd get in a sandwich. There's a surprisingly decent sushi menu with some inventive takes on maki rolls. Soups and sides are also available, including ramen, udon, dumplings, and seaweed salad. I've never had anything I didn't like, and most things I've loved. Cannot recommend the falafel platter (make your own damn sandwich) enough. The spicy sauce (a sriracha mayo, maybe) is amazing, and the falafel itself is excellent. If you're in the area, or even if you're just in the mood for falafel, this is the place to go. You won't get to experience any middle eastern dancing or drink any turkish coffee, but who can complain when your belly and bank account are both in good spirits upon leaving? read more

I guess I don't get it. My friend doesn't either. We just had lunch here, expecting a wonderful meal based on the Yelp reviews, and were sorely disappointed. The place is quite small, but there is plenty of parking that is shared between other area business. Make sure you are parked in a legit area. Do NOT leave to go to other establishments that are not covered in the parking agreement (see signs) and return. You might return to a boot on your car. There was a long line around 3pm on a Saturday. Boy, did it take forever to order and get food. I ordered the mixed (falafel and chicken) sandwich, side of dumplings, and a soda. My friend ordered the falafel plate with sides of grape leaves and dumplings. The pita pocket for the sandwich was quite nice. Wonderfully warm. But, overall, I found the chicken and falafel to be bland. My friend's falafel was really hard and she had to smash them in order to eat them with her bread. After going to most of the restaurants in the Emory Village area over the last two weeks, I can safely say that I've found a place that I will actually come back to again for lunch. Today, I had the pleasure of eating a "mixed" pita sandwich, which was basically a falafel and chicken shwarama mixed into one pita. The pita itself was soft and fresh, although a bit bland like others have noted. However, the chicken was quite tasty-- perfectly seasoned and had a great rotisserie flavor to it. I'm not a falafel expert by any means, but the chickpea patties were hot and freshly fried. There is a good amount of lettuce and tomatoes included in the pita pocket, which provided a good balance. In terms of cost, it was $6 for the mixed pita, which got me sufficiently filled up for a lunch. In my opinion, decently priced, although I wouldn't mind it if were a bit cheaper. In terms of what they could improve, I would start adding hummus in their pita sandwiches, which would make it even better. However, 4.5 stars, and I'm coming back again this week. read more

I love this place SO much. Falafel King is a little neighborhood place in Emory Village, so it's a favorite among locals and of course Emory students. You'll easily about to find Falafel King because it's a very interesting tiny building with this weird chute/chimney thing. The inside is very small, with about 3 little tables squeezed in the space and a bar to sit at along the windows. It's clean and neat though. It makes for a perfect quick lunch or dinner stop. Definitely order the falafel sandwich. You can try the other stuff later, but the falafel sandwich is its claim to fame. The falafels are always hot, fresh and crispy. It's this sweet-spicy combination that you can't find at a normal Mediterranean restaurant. The other ingredients are always very fresh too. It's all wrapped up in a fresh, soft pita pocket. Seriously so delicious when all put together. Also!!! Make sure to add some spicy mayo or whatever the orange-ish sauce is called to your meal. There's something very unique and great about the sauce. My friend who visited Israel last summer always compares Falafel King to it. Some more info: Falafel King is owned by a Korean couple and it offers the very basic Mediterranean meats and sandwiches, along with a menu of sushi and very basic Asian food (seaweed salad, ramen, etc.). So my friend basically thinks the falafels in this quirky little restaurant are just as good than food from Israel, which has some of the best falafels and pita in the world. So, I didn't have very high expectations for falafel due to my part experiences until I came here! it's in a little shopping center with some familiar places such as Chipotle, Yowgli Mowgli and Starbucks around the corner as well as a few other local places. It's a get it at the counter and eat it kind of place so I can't say much about the service except- what I assume to be the couple that owned it were friendly. Let's start with the falafel- it was sooo good- soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. It's comparable to Ali Baba's downtown which has my favorite falafel. I got the mixed plate which includes a couple pieces of falafel, some freshly shaved chicken shawarma, a salad (lettuce and diced cucumber and tomatoes) and two sides. The options I remember were olives, kidney beans and broccoli I think (?), hummus, sea weed, dumplings and there were a few others I can't remember. They have pita sandwiches, plates, side orders and sushi on their menu- all well priced and you get your money's worth. All in all everything was flavorful and delicious. The shawarma was juicy and a wee bit spicy- the perfect amount- and MUST be eaten with the orange sauce. This is the first time I've been here and it was completely empty-3pm, weekday. Just thinking about my Falafel King experience is eliciting a Pavlovian drooling response. The falafel was hand-rolled and made fresh when we ordered it. It was served in a warm pita and was seriously to die for. It's the first time in a very long time that I've eaten somewhere in Emory Village and actually been impressed. YUM!! This place is by no means fancy, but it has the best food in Emory Village. I'll go ahead and review what I've had here. Falafel Sandwich: Falafel is crispy and not greasy. Sauce is great. Everything is yummy. Delicious, more than enough food for one person, $3.99. Get it. Chicken Shawarma: I got the platter with dumplings and spring roll. Best chicken shawarma I've ever had. And the dumplings are hands down better than what I've had at Chinese restaurants. SO GOOD! Rainbow Roll: Yes, they have some of the best sushi I've ever had. Even the California roll is good. Let me start this by saying, I LOVE falafel. Pretty much all falafel. I'm not picky. But this falafel was a huge disappointment for me. I ordered the falafel pita and it literally cut my mouth (repeatedly) as I ate it. It also came with zero sauce in the pita, so it was dry beyond belief. It was filling, and I just are it in my hand while walking back to work.. (which is how it is supposed to be eat- it is a "street food"... Shawarma does remind me of the flavors in Turkey, where I am originally from.. We also got the stuffed grape leaves. It seemed like they were just selling ready made stuffed grape leaves sold in cans bought from middle eastern shop; in short they didn't taste fresh. They also had some weird green juice which is not usual unless they are not freshly made (but typical for canned stuffed grape leaves). I was in the Emory area this weekend. My wife and I were going to a wedding at 7 PM that night. We needed to get get a light dinner before the wedding. I looked at yelp to see what the reviews for Falafel King was and that sealed my fate. As you can see by the pictures, this is a hole in the wall which is my kind of place. The owners were friendly and explained any dishes that we did not know. We had the dragon roll (eel), humus with pita bread and one other roll. We got all of this and 2 drinks for $19. What a great deal. The dragon roll and humus were excellent. The next time I am there I am going to try the Falafel pita sandwich. It looked great. It reminds me of gyro. If you are in the area and want a cheap eat but great food, give this place a try. read more

Small restaurant owned by a Korean couple who had their share of exposure to Middle Eastern cuisine. Their shawarma sandwich is excellent, and so are their falafels. For a poverty-stricken college student, the options at Falafel King are more often cheaper than the options available at the nearby Chipotle. Also, if you attend Emory, and really crave some good sushi, this is the place to come. Just don't get ramen here. I recommend their Chicken Shwarma Sandwich with tons of that orange korean spicy bbq mayo sauce and seaweed salad. It is amazing. The sushi is good too, comparable with more expensive places. I also split an eel avocado roll with my friend, and the sushi rolls are a bit small, but it does the job if you're craving sushi. When we were in line ordering our food, it seemed like there was a lot of chaos and disorganization going on in the back. When we got to the front of the line, we waited a few minutes to order, since the lady at the cash register just disappeared to the back for a while. Some people might find the cognitive dissonance of falafel and sushi to be too much, but it makes me smile. Last time I was here I had a falafel sandwich and an eel roll, both of which are good. Their peculiar way of making the sandwich (cutting a small opening along the edge of a circular pita and stuffing it) is also a little disconcerting. And somewhat difficult to manage eating when you're not used to it. But I find it delicious anyway. Don't come here for the ambiance, as there is none. It's hard for me to comment on the tiny space they have for seating except to say that it's not usually full when I go there. They seem to mainly have take-out traffic. On a warm evening, it can be nice to sit on one of their two "patio" tables, if you don't mind the traffic. Overall their middle-eastern selections aren't comparable to the best ones I've had, but they are at least very good for the Atlanta area, and they may be the best I've had in town. This place looks sketch, to say the least, when you're approaching it. All you see is a cone shaped top on an awkwardly small building with a tiny driveway next to it. But once you get in, it's pretty comfortable. The place is crawling with Emory students who come in for a quick bite. The Korean couple who own it are very nice and accommodating. Falafel King offers sushi and asian food as well as falafel and shawarma. It's a strange but delicious combination. My boyfriend and I prefer to get the falafel plate with a side of dumplings and edamame, but I've heard any of the sides are yummy. I like that even if you order the plate, they give you a pita pocket with it so you can put together your own sandwich if you like. Definitely a plus! I also quite enjoy their dragon roll and seaweed salad. I was skeptical of a place not specializing in sushi having good sushi, but it definitely was tasty. They also offer ramen noodles and some other asian dishes, but I have yet to try those. The shawarma disappointed me a bit, but that's just because I've had better shawarma in other countries and no place in Atlanta has managed to beat those. But I would prefer lamb or beef shawarma to chicken, and chicken is the only one they offer. Drinks are offered by the can or bottle and water is by the cup and on request. I think the place would probably get far more business if it was open later at night, since I have had a craving many a time only to find the place closes by 9pm! You may have driven past this place (as I did many times) and thought to yourself, "Sushi?!, there is absolutely no way in hell I would ever get sushi from that place!" First of all, its called Falafel King, and second of all its in a run-down castle looking building. You might think you are just asking for an intestinal meltdown. Alas, upon entering the aptly named Falafel King (because their falafel does deserve a throne) you will find an inviting and clean (but cramped) space. The food is inexpensive and delicious. I still have not tried the sushi, but not because I don't trust it or it doesn't look good. I simply can't get past the frickin shwarma sandwhich. It is SO GOOD! The spicy sauce it comes with is amazing as well. Also, its hard not support this place when you talk with the people behind the counter. A very nice husband/wife combo who work VERY hard at this business. I always feel a little bad for them because they seem so stressed out. I know if I worked with my significant other 8 hours a day, 7 days a week, in a 8x11 space, I would be stressed out too, especially in the restaurant biz. This is a tiny little spot in Emory village perfect for grabbing a yummy and cheap lunch! It is quite small inside, with a couple of tables and window seats. There is also a picnic table outside. I have only tried the falafel sandwich which is about $3.50. It comes a little dry, so I would recommend trying one of the sauces on it. A can of soda is $1.00. I haven't tried the sushi yet, but it looks great. It can get pretty hot in here. If there is air conditioning it gets overridden by the heat coming out of the kitchen. I had the mixed plate, shawarma and falafel. I'm no Mediterranean specialist but I thought they were both very good. The food was served up fast and hot and there is plenty of it. Wife and I had two meals and soft drinks for $16. They also have sushi and ramen here. I didn't have them but they looked good in the super tight space they have here. I love the folks who run this place, they are very nice, but they are the only two who run the register and make food, so expect quite the wait if there is a line. Delicious food, though.
