This is my fourth time here. It is convenient to home and I prefer to dine in rather than take out. The dining is loud, but otherwise very nice. Food is okay, just okay. Everything they serve tends to be bland and just barely hot. I order anything I eat here "hot and spicy" and still have to ask for mustard to spice things up. Also, they rush to get food to you, but don't cook things long enough for them to be hot! My dish tonight, Happy Family, included scallops. They were fine, tender and mild tasting, but cold! Service is the real breakdown. All servers and bus staff rush customers through. They are poorly trained, anything but friendly, and not attentive to anything other than the check which they picked up twice before I could sign the CC charge. Good Chinese takeout is a staple of any living situation. You need that place that you can call and know the delivery is showing up in less than 30 minutes or that you can actually pick it up in 10 minutes. You need to know that the food won't be overly greasy, and that your fortune cookies won't be stale. China Fan is all of those things and more, but somehow I've lived in this area off and on for the better part of the last two decades and never at here until just recently with some work people. The first, and most important thing happened when I walked in. This place is CLEAN. I had gotten used to never actually going to my Chinese food place in Queens because I didn't want to see the place before eating the food. China Fan is the exact opposite. And most important, the food is solid for the price. Nothing special is happening here, nothing life changing, just good solid Chinese take out. Living in Summit I have not found a decent Chinese place in the many years living here, always having to go to different towns. .......finally, Fan Bistro. :) Fried rice is delicious......and their pork egg rolls are the BEST! My husband loves the General Tso Chicken, and their other chicken w/ asparagus or chicken with steamed vegetables is fresh and delicious....they don't overkill it with that awful brown sauce. Delivery is always prompt and courteous, and the prices are reasonable. The sushi is very decent too, I have been getting California rolls (not raw fish...not sure if I would venture there w/ a NJ Chinese restaurant). This has been our go to weekly Chinese takeout place. Updated review for the new Fan Bistro. Impressive decor. So many things I wish I can ask them where they get from them like the soy sauce bottle. Came around 9 on a Thursday night. There were about 10 people. They have the half priced sushi so we ordered a few. Took a while. There were only 2 sushi chefs and I guess everyone else was also ordering sushi. The maki rolls are on the bigger side, more rice and more fish. They will definitely fill you up. I am not impressed by the rolls though... I think East still offers better sushi in the area. But the noodle soup is money here. Ordered the duck noodle soup. Came in a big bowl enough for us to share. You can pick from 4 different kinds of noodle and it is 7.95 cheap. The broth is rich and authentic in flavor. The bok choy is fresh tasting and soaked up the good flavor. The duck is tender and reminding me of roast duck from Chinatown. Can't wait to come back for more noodles! Service is good and cordial. Above average for a Chinese restaurant. read more

This is my favorite place to eat Chinese food! I've been coming here for years. The food is always consistent and the inside is always clean. Every time I've been here I've been seated right away and the staff are all very nice. They have a large variety of sushi rolls to choose from as well as a large amount of entrees and appetizers. They must have hired some new chefs, because the food has gone from really good to excellent! The new dining area is gorgeous, and the staff is attentive and knowledgeable. I haven't seen Cantonese Noodle Soup at any restaurant in this area, yet they have 9 of them here, and they're very good. Also, if you tell them "extra spicy", you're going to get it that way, which is a huge plus in my book! Its a shame most Asian restaurants tone down the spicy dishes because they assume you can't handle the heat, so it's great to have a local place that prepares the food the way it's supposed to be. The reviews prompted me to feel skeptical about ordering lunch from here. But I'm new in town so I wanted to try Fan Bistro at least once. I'm happy I did. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken lunch special (not the healthiest choice, I know, but a good one to help evaluate the food quality). Extra spicy, brown rice, shrimp egg roll. And I had an excellent meal. Well-spiced, broccoli on the side, and a good shrimp egg roll. In addition the staff was friendly and did their part to help stay safe during Covid: masks, plexiglass, sanitizer available, and exchanging cash using a tray instead of hand-to-hand connection. I'm happy I bucked the reviews and gave Fan Bistro a shot. I look forward to trying other dishes soon. read more

Our family is in a comfortable rut as regards Chinese take out. For every day take out, we love Hop Hing here in Berkeley Heights. For special occasions, we patronize Meemah in Edison or Cathay 22 in Mountainside. Recently, a steady drumbeat of superlatives on Facebook prompted us to give Fan a try. We ordered online. Accessing the web site was very difficult. No luck viewing the menu on iPad or iPhone. Had to dust off my wife's Mac. But, we finally placed an order. Ribs, fried dumplings, schezuan wantons, orange beef, coconut curry beef and roast pork fried rice. Our order was slightly delayed but I was ultimately handed a big bag of treats with a smile and appreciation for coming in. So how was the food? My son was really looking forward to comparing the ribs to Hop Hing. He advised that these ribs were the clear winner between the two restaurants. He was really pleased. As for the balance of the food, it was pleasant standard fare Chinese. No stand outs. Nothing objectionable. The dumplings and wontons were doughy but the fillings were very tasty. My wife wished her curry dish had more vegetables, I wished my beef was more beefy so to speak. Very thin fried very crisp. Good sauce though. The fried rice was better then Hop Hing. No chunks of carrot which I hate. I see some more visits in our future and then we'll retreat back to our comfortable rut. read more

Besides cheating on my diet, china fan has never done me wrong. Best chineese food in the area, as well as the best prices. But its no place for a dinner date (unless she's into that). Also the only Chinese restaurant in the area that blatantly states they don't use MSG, which probably just means they don't add any of their own, but I'm sure there's MSG in some of their ingredients. We frequent Fan Bistro often, despite not living very close by. This place offers a large array of items ranging from Japanese, to Chinese, to Thai food, all more delicious than the next. I especially enjoy the California rolls, Pad Thai, and Steak Hibachi platters. The atmosphere is also lovely. Unreasonably SLOW service. The food is good, but waiting almost an hour for steamed vegetables is not worth it. Been coming for three years a couple of times a month, but things have got bad lately. Don't know what the issue is. They have plenty of waiters who seem to work hard. Maybe they need more kitchen staff. In any case, we're taking a hiatus and maybe will try again in 6-9 months. BLAND. Ordered Beef and Garlic sauce - the issue was less the lack of spice but it tasted as if the vegetables and meat had been boiled separately and mixed together with the sauce right before serving instead of cooked together as you'd expect. read more

I've been to a few sushi/Chinese places in the area, but Fan Bistro is probably the best for the money. If you go on the half priced nights, two can get a really nice meal for under $50. The BYO aspect helps with that as well. I've had the Chinese take out a few times and it is pretty good. The ribs are probably the best thing on the menu. My only complaint is that they tend to run out and I have to settle on something else. read more

Went last Sunday evening and started w/(2) half price sushi rolls (eel/avocado and spicy tuna). We thought they were ok but there was very little eel in the roll, spicy tuna was more generous. For dinner, we had chicken curry and orange beef. Both were completely delicious. The restaurant is very attractive and the service was good although we did get our entrees served to us as we finishing our appetizers. I would recommend this place for a quality meal. read more

This place is excellent! It was our first time here. They have not only sushi but Chinese food as well. The food was great and prepared very nicely. I eat a lot of general tso chicken and this is some of the best I've had. The atmosphere is amazing. Very well laid out and luxurious, the seating is great with pillow and soft cushions for all their customers. Our waitress Carries was great! She was kind and friendly, brought us everything we asked for and checked in with us many times throughout the meal. What was most shocking was the check! $30 for a meal for 2 with sodas rice and full entrees! We will be returning here for sure. read more

Ate here twice (one time takeaway and one time dine in). Food is mediocre at best and not cheap. Service sucks. I guess it's kinda my fault for picking a Chinese restaurant that does sushi (or a sushi place that does Chinese?). Chinese dishes are heavy on starchy sauces which make you feel ill after eating. "Sushi" is heavy on terribly prepared rice with some fish. I swear, I've seen better sushi at the local grocery store! Low competition in the burbs breeds mediocrity. Chinese is better at Szechuan Delight close by. For sushi I'd rather go to Tomo's in East Hanover or... Manhattan. read more

Dinner out with old friends should have been fun. Fan Bistro managed to ruin our evening. Though the food was tasty, we were rushed. Entrees arrived way too soon, as we had just been served our appetizers. Asking them to hold them in the kitchen appeared to really annoy the staff. The entrees when brought back were cold and we were ignored the rest of the evening. Repeated requests for more tea? Ignored! We literally never saw our waitress again until she arrived with the bill. There's just no reason for this. Eating here for lunch is great because you get the half off sushi price. The downside is you're going to need a fairly long lunch as the sushi chefs can be a bit backed up. Expect at least an hour from being seated to signing your credit card slip, longer if you're with a few people and each ordered more than 3 rolls.
