Came here to eat after the free museum day at the Academy Museum. We went around 6ish (Sunday) and it was like half full. We had a reservation anyways and got seated right away. We ordered the focaccia, Caesar salad, and vodka rigatoni. Mexican cokes for drinks. All of the food was good. Our server was friendly and attentive as well. It was one of those places where you have a main server but other servers or food runners also come to check on you and make sure your plates are cleared, waters refilled, etc. so that is nice. The atmosphere is nice. Fitting decor and mood for a restaurant attached to the Academy Museum. The only downside was the water glasses could have been cleaner. They had some little particles floating around in our water. Absolutely gorgeous sweet bread, avocado what with a generous amount of delicious succulent, lobster. With a little adjustment temperature, this dish will be perfect. Love love love! Right on the ground floor inside the Motion Picture Academy Museum, it's easy access and way worth it for the creative, trippy takes on what would otherwise be considered 'normal' menu items. I started with the BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP. Outstanding. Full of warm, autumnal spices, a hint of kick plus plump golden raisins which made it SO-Cal. Then I went for the GRILLED SEASONAL VEGETABLES. Our waitress (impish, chirping, lovely) said upon ordering; "It's zucchini, is that okay?" What came out was so much more than that. I returned to participate in the Preferred Hotels travel agent event. The venue was packed with hotel agents and they had three flapper girls for photo ops. The open bar provided some classic drinks, wine, and beer with very fast service from the bartenders. They had food available for us and all of it was excellent. Super disappointing experience! I went because a family member recommended it. We had a reservation for 3 people at 1:30pm but they acted like they weren't prepared at all. They gave us a table right at the entrance that was still dirty. They wiped down the table but they left food that was all over the floor. I had to ask them to clean it before we sat down. They acted like this was a strange request and it took them ages to actually do it. We were standing at the entrance as they sat other people who came after us to other tables. Finally the host acknowledged that we were still waiting and asked me if we wanted a different table instead but then said she couldn't actually leave the host stand...so you're not offering a new table then? You asked but then gave a reason as to why you couldn't do it. What's the point of asking? They should have just taken the initiative to give us another table. Finally it got cleaned and we sat down. I was hoping the food would redeem the service thus far, but all the food was lackluster. Got the French Fry Flight - the regular and truffle parmesean fries tasted exactly the same except for the cheese sprinkled on top of one. No truffle flavor. The portobello fries were inedibly greasy and flavorless. We each literally took one bite of those and left the rest. The crab cake was extremely fishy. You could smell the plate before it hit the table. Tasted just OK. The burrata dish could have been great but they slathered mint sauce all over it and it overpowered everything. The short rib ragu pasta was extremely overcooked and mushy. Also weirdly had a mint oil on it which killed the flavor. The only thing we really enjoyed was the Focaccia and butter. We saw the dessert cart going around to every table but our server never offered us so we decided to go elsewhere for dessert. Our server was friendly enough but we felt like an afterthought. It's Christmas Eve and we just had the most disappointing meal at Fanny's. We arrived early for a 4pm reservation and were seated at 3:45pm. We order drinks and food off their basic menu. In the 5 mins it took for our drink order to arrive we have seen the table next to us ordering from a different special menu. Neither the host nor our waiter (turned waitress a few minutes into service) mentioned they were having a Christmas Eve Prix Fixe menu that started at 4pm. Really?? A party of 5 on Christmas Eve and you're not going to mention a Prix Fixe Special Menu! ?! I immediately asked if we could cancel our order that was literally just typed into the system, so we can all have the Prix Fixe. No kidding, the time is now 4:05pm. She said she tried to cancel the order but that "it's already in and sorry there's nothing she can do about it". So we proceed to wait 25 mins or so for our meals. My entree salad arrived first and another 7 minutes pass for 3 other entrees to show up. And then another few minutes for the last entree to arrive! A manager brought a dessert cookie and a sprite with apologies for the long waits. He also comp'd the burger, all very nice gestures. But seriously what a lame ordeal. Meanwhile the table next to us is enjoying this awesome special dinner and we're eating cold fries and chicken since we waited for everyone's meal to arrive before dining. To top it off the Crouching Tiger Salad was terrible. A $31 appetizer size salad with wilted overdressed spinach and chicken that had that texture of being batch cooked earlier and kept chilled to toss into later orders. The restaurant will tell you that they are booked after making you wait and will then direct you to the cafe, who will tell you that most things on the menu are no longer available before dinner time. They will find every reason to not feed you so it's best if you just go somewhere else instead of wasting your time like we did. How can they improve you ask? Lots of ways I'm sure but I can list many based on this visit. First, very clearly state what IS available on the menu instead of having customers play a guessing game and holding up the line. I had to request the refund which he did not provide a receipt for. It was handled so poorly and in a very upsetting manner. I also overheard him finding other reasons to tell other diners to go away so maybe they just don't want the business... so maybe this review can at least help with that. My friend cancelled her order after Jimmy told me to leave. They got her order wrong and ended up charging her more for stuff she didn't order but she decided to pay the higher amount anyway and instead planned to take the extra home. I also was charged a high amount and I even tipped well when I thought they cared about allergies before talking to Jimmy. Anyway, we both better get our money back since they refused to serve me anything due to allergies. They also didn't provide her with a receipt either time. So service is clearly a NO here. And food is clearly a huge NO also. They were out of chicken tenders which is what my kid originally wanted, and they heavily pushed the burrata which is "kind of like a salad but not really". The only entree available were the meatballs which sounded awful anyway. The ambiance is also a joke. They have these communal tables and wooden chairs which are extremely uncomfortable. There is hardly any space for strollers or mobility devices. Other patrons were also clearly frustrated with the lackluster service so they were not happy to make space for strollers to pass through an already cramped space. While we were waiting in line outside to get into the Academy museum, Fanny's also had a tent set up outside for tacos and quick service. We almost bought some of that too but after this awful experience I doubt we would try anything that has to do with Fanny's again. read more

This was my second time dining at Fanny's. Named after Fanny Brice, it's located within the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, although you don't need museum admission to dine here. They have a café and pastry menu during the day in front, and the rear dining room is open for dinner. There's also a bar. Fanny's was participating in DineLA's Restaurant week, my reason for visiting this time, so the dining room is also open for DineLA lunch during this time. For my first visit, I ordered off the regular menu, which was fine. The DineLA menu had dishes not on the regular menu; dinner was $65 prix-fixe for 3 courses. Lunch was $35 for 2 courses. I ordered the shellfish ceviche, steak katsu, and olallieberry tart. The ceviche had scallop, shrimp and octopus in a tangy wasabi lime vinaigrette. The steak katsu was steak breaded and fried like chicken katsu and came with a traditional katsu sauce, a tangy slaw, and delicious house-made milk buns. Nothing says "we value our customers" like a manager who prioritizes his own evening plans over the guest experience! Now, the food? Solid. We had the burger, steak frites, salmon, and jidori chicken, and everything hit the mark. But here's the catch: if you want to enjoy it in a nice setting, you'd better be willing to eat dinner at 5 PM. Because despite arriving in time for last food orders, we weren't allowed to sit in the actual dining room and had to eat in the café side--which, let's be honest, is not where you want to sip a martini and enjoy a nice meal. The dining room had ambiance, but the café felt like, well, a café. It was completely vibe-less for such a cool-looking venue. This restaurant is located inside of the Academy Museum and is ideal if you're attending a screening or visiting the Academy museum, or even LACMA or The Petersen across the street. In the front of the restaurant, there's a very casual coffee and snacks area with some gorgeous pastries and baked goods, and large wooden tables. As you walk further back, you will see to the left the beautifully lit fine dining experience. I made a reservation via RESY, and it was probably a very good idea because the restaurant was almost full around 6 PM. The screening started at 7:30 and the server was quite kind and suggested that we get out of the dinner at 7pm because there would be a line for the open seat screening. I had an excellent cocktail, the El PadRino. It's made with El Tesoro Blanco, amaretto, juliette peach, and lemon. All the names of the items on the menu are cinema themed. The menu is super cute with fun illustrations on it. This made me want to read the whole menu. I really liked the penne vodka, which is called FROM RUSSIA WITH SPICY VODKA. It's rigatoni with stracciatella and basil. My friend enjoyed his PATHS OF JIDORI CHICKEN: potato purée, baby carrots and natural jus Jidori chicken. The mixed fried appetizer to start, CINEMA FRITTO MISTO, has calamari, shrimp, shishito peppers, sauce eribiche with calamari and vegetables. It's really good and it's basically a very light tempura. Not greasy at all, fresh and crispy. To be honest, I would have the penne vodka again in a second. It was delicious. They served us very quickly and brought everything at once in order that we could finish our meal in an hour. Next time, I would probably book about 1 hour and 45 minutes before a screening because they recommend to grab a theater seat 30 minutes before the screenings start, and an hour just isn't quite enough to enjoy a meal. The service was fast and courteous and I'd like to go back and look upstairs in the restaurant because they have a lot of original illustrations of movie costumes on the walls and all kinds of film stills and Hollywood cinema photographs around the dining room. It's definitely worth a walk around to see all that inside the restaurant. The bar is nice also, and the scene looks quite happening and fun as well. If you take an Uber (I did) they can drop you off right in front of the restaurant entrance on Fairfax. But there's also parking in the museum for about $20-$21 and across the street at the Petersen for the same price. My friend parked his car a couple blocks away, north on 6th Street near the park for free. I was a little confused with the check because they offered a 10% discount with a ticket for the screening, but that was sort of negated with an additional "Healthy LA" (5.00%) fee for employee healthcare. Wish they would just integrate the healthcare fee into the menu prices; it's so confusing. I've heard it's quite common, but I don't see this very often. The restaurant isn't exactly cheap and one appetizer to split plus 2 main courses (a pasta and a chicken dish) and two cocktails with the tip was about $160. But it was a memorable evening and the screening inside at the Geffen Theater was fantastic, with a Q&A featuring Rita Moreno and a 70mm showing of West Side Story! read more

I went to the cafe part of Fanny's and you can order at the counter and when I went, there was plenty of seating.
