Strawberry Doughnut with Sprinkles Maple Glazed Doughnut Cinnamon Roll Chocolate Babka Owned and operated by a man named Ilya it was on the recommendation of a friend that the GPS was pointed towards Brooklyn Doughnutry immediately upon landing at JFK, a special request 24-hours prior assuring that one of the eatery's Chocolate Babka would be available by 7:30am and the surprising lack of traffic plus a quick walk in the cold finding the small shop still in the process of getting ready at 7:15. Open for just seven months at 50 Malcolm X Boulevard, a mere block from the Kosciuszko Street M-J-Z line making the storefront easily accessible to both Manhattanites and Brooklyn residents, guests approaching Brooklyn Doughnutry will likely feel a bit uneasy with the rugged appearance of the neighborhood and shop itself, though based on a visit this past Thursday there is a lot more than first impressions might indicate to what is happening inside. Listing hours from 7a-7p Monday through Friday and 8a-5p on Weekends, a postage stamp floorplan preventing inside seating and racks completely barren on arrival despite doors being unlocked, it was shortly after entering that a young woman greeted visitors at the door with pleasantries and an offer of hot Coffee, the owner in back finishing-up the Babka and inquisitive as to how someone from 2,500 miles away had heard of Brooklyn Doughnutry as he frosted a pair of warm rings behind a sheet of Plexiglas. Admittedly running a bit behind on this particular morning, many of the day's Frostings not yet made and filled Donuts "still a few hours" from being ready, it was after brief discussion that the decision was made to select just four items, the bargain-basement price of just $11.50 for what must have been about 30oz of Pastry an undeniable bargain anywhere and the shop's location in New York City making it all the more so. Using a Brioche base for each of the store's creations, Cake Doughnut fans therefore out of luck but perhaps in a position to be converted by Ilya's oversized rounds with a golden exterior overlying wispy pockets with pronounced egginess beneath a hint of Yeast, it was en route to the train that both the Maple and Strawberry Rings were released from plastic clamshells - the former Brooklyn Doughnutry's version of plain "glazed" but far better thanks to the Syrup while the Simpson's-style pink one was not dissimilar to Dunkin in terms of pseudo-Strawberry taste. Impressed to this point but anticipating the best to come, a fairly empty L-train allowing plenty of space to eat, it was with several riders starring that a sizable Cinnamon Roll was unbagged and eaten in strips from outside inward, the complete lack of Oil making one guess that glazed Roll had been baked rather than fried while the $4 Babka was undoubtedly the work of an oven with eight fluffy curls of Brioche overlying a treasure trove of Dark Chocolate on the inside. read more

SUMMARY: Very cute spot that seems to be popular with the locals! Their doughnuts are HUGE but kind of basic in flavour. That being said, they are pretty fluffy. Best to share this with one or two people, since I got tired of the flavour kind of fast. VERDICT: I would check it out if I'm in the neighbourhood, especially if you're a big fan of doughnuts. If you're not a fan of doughnuts (why would you be looking at this review anyway? haha), I would actually recommend that you try Doughnuttry in Chelsea Market. Doughnuttry make bite-sized donuts FRESH (as in, they get fried when you order them), so you get to eat them while they're still warm, and the experience is much better than eating a regular doughnut! ITEM ORDERED: Spiced Orange Doughnut -- I'm not really sure what part of this is "spiced" since it just kind of seemed like a glazed donut (doughnut? You'll see that I'm going to use both spellings in this review) with candied orange pieces. I really did like the orange pieces, since those were actually a little bitter and reminiscent of marmalade. None of the other flavours were really appealing to me as I'm not a huge fan of super sweet goods. I really wanted to try the Frosted Coffee donut, but I think those are probably the most popular ones because they were never in stock! I decided to stop in after passing by this place the other day. To be quite honest, I am not really a fan of doughnuts, but it seemed like a popular destination, and I am always curious when it comes to food. The donuts are huge and only $2.50, which is pretty good I think. The downside of this place is that it is really a grab-and-go kind of establishment, since there are no places to sit or stand around. Donuts are HUGE, although they are not the type of donut that I typically gravitate towards, they are tasty enough. Also had the egg salad sandwich on a baguette and it was interesting. It was the whitest & chunkiest egg salad I have ever had but it was good. I like a lot of black pepper on mine so I ended up adding that. It's served cut in half but I separated the halves because every time I bit into it, the salad would slide out of the sandwich. It was easier to eat it as an open face. Just my preference as I'm very particular about getting messy when I eat. Yolks of the egg are soooo yellow! I thought they were bell peppers! I really liked the dill in the egg salad too. I've ordered here twice for delivery now and I will say that they are consistent but I have not found a wow factor as of yet. Rarely do an update review, but this warrants one. Since my review, I've been here probably about 6-8 more times, and I still stand by the fact that their glazed donut is the best glazed donut I've ever had....but only when it's done right. Unfortunately, there's a bit of a consistency issue, and it's not necessarily linked to time of day. Sometimes the donut is fat, fluffy, and perfectly fried, and other times, it's greasy, a little heavy, and the bottom of the donut is a bit damp with oil. I haven't figured out a pattern, but I truly don't think it's a timing issue where I bought an older donut that was sitting in the display for a while, because there are times I've taken a perfect glazed donut home, eaten it hours later, and it was still perfection. They pretty huge and 1 to share would be enough unless you are feeling particularly naughty! A ring doughnut comes in at $2.50 and a filled doughnut is $3. If you want really good doughnuts that are made with a lot of love, you will not regret making your way into Brooklyn for these doughnuts. And it's my good luck that they're just around the corner from me. A doughnut fix used to mean a 30 minute walk to a doughnut joint that has been well hyped and around for a while now, but doughnuts from Brooklyn Doughnutry are by far better and a lot cheaper too. There are so many different kinds of doughnuts imaginable and you'll be spoiled for choice. Doughnuts are priced at $2.50 and $2.75 and babkas at $4. And did I mention that even the coffee is yum! And it's not just the doughnuts, but the babkas...oh my goodness the babkas!! First time I bought a loaf, I thought I'd have a nibble for evening tea and would have some left over for breakfast, that luscious strawberry and cream cheese babka did not stand a chance! I have since then tried their poppy seed babka (amazing!), Nutella/Chocolate babka (made me cry tears of joy), and apricot babka (didn't want to share it with anyone else) and will make it a point to try all the flavors that this place has to offer. Though I will admit, I can't seem to not want to order the strawberry and cream cheese babka because it really is just so delicious. The babkas are made to order still if I'm not mistaken, it's worth the wait and the trip! He's got chewy delicious cookies and fruit punch that is made fresh on site with just the right amount of sweetness that's perfect for these hot summer days. Apart from the wonderfully delicious doughnuts and babkas, what makes this doughnut shop all the more special is the owner, Ilya. It's family run and you can tell that his food is made with a lot of thought, care and love for what he does and it shows in the food that he makes. Just walked 12 blocks to come here for the strawberry filled jelly donut I've been reading about but they've replaced it with some artificial low-grade stuff they don't even use at Dunkin' Donuts. Fluffy, giant, and so delicious! We braved a freezing, windy morning to walk to this place, and we were not disappointed! They have so many unique flavors, including dulce de leche, banana nut, and maple walnut. I love trying new doughnut shops and this one was so delicious! Was super eager to try this place out when I found out they made Babka. Braved the slushy roads for it, even! Unfortunately for me I didn't realize the Babka was made if you ordered beforehand.
