It's my classic go to sushi place in San Leandro that opens just barely late enough for me to call in a last minute order and then pick it up right after work, or during my abnormally late lunch break. Their menu is online- which makes it so convenient especially since Yelp photos don't blow up at all so when I tried to order through those great photos everybody post.. yeah not happening. They pick up their phone, repeat your order, tell you a decent pick up time and their price. It wraps up quite nicely and my food is always ready or just about to be when I get there. Staff are super friendly and the place inside is somewhat small- but you sit comfortably. There's a giant menu inside with PICTURE references for all the people that don't know and the graphics actually represent what you're about to be eating. Quality matches quantity and sometimes, it's even better. They've never stirred me wrong with the Lion King or the avocado roll, so what do I have to complain about? Never found hair in my food, and the portions are huge! Seaweed salad is cheap and way more than enough for two people to share at that price. In fact, their prices are so well, I've ordered their smallest sushi platter at about 35$ and it was a perfect amount of food for two hungry bears (aka my coworker and myself). It was so worthy of our money and our stomachs AND WE DIDNT GET SICK. All in all, it's not your I'm a sushi snob let me come here order the blue fin tuna and let it melt in my mouth orgasm full of joy, but more like I'm starving, sushi sounds delicious, what's opened that takes credit card and will fill me up. We came here to try out a new sushi spot close to our work and WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! We walked through the door and said, "two please" and the lady said that we were to order first then sit down. WTF? Soo, having been our first visit here, we were standing looking up at the menu for a while, (like it's a fast-food place) hurting our necks until we finally made a decision on which rolls to get. San Leandro, Poki, Volcano and Red Dragon. I asked for water and she got tea. The lady said that the water was around the corner. WTF? I gotta get it myself? It was one of those water coolers with a bucket of ice next to it. WOW. No soup, no salad, no nothing to start with. Normally, at any other Japanese spot, we'd get miso soup or a little thing of salad but NOPE, not here! Sushi rolls came and it looked WEIRD to me. Why? Because the slabs of raw fish was bumpy looking. Bumpy as in like it wasn't a clean sashimi cut and it was old looking. Pictures are included! The Volcano roll came with spicy imitation crab on top.. so of course, that was some nasty rubbery texture. The spicy tuna for the Poki roll did not taste fresh at all. We had a lot of sushi pieces leftover and neither one of us wanted to box it up. I've been going there for over five years and Fat fish started out as a pretty decent place to grab some quick sushi, however the quality has taken a cliff dive to food hell. I ordered take out this time and it was practically when they first opened for the day. Fresh day fresh ingredients... or so you would think. Three rolls and a lot of dissatisfaction later, I boiled it down to a few disappointments. - Yesterday's ingredients - the 80% of the avocado in the middle of the roll was grey. (And I'm not saying just kinda grey, like it was near graphite color) the rice was hard but, at least they were generous about that. (BTW, in sushi, being overly generous with rice on sushi roll is a bad thing...) - Are you even trying? - the display of rolls in sushi is a big deal. You aren't just making food, it's edible art. The rolls I received seemed so nonchalantly put together that it just seemed really half assed for maximum profit purposes. No offense but, Safeway is doing better in presentations than you (and in this rare case, I can't believe I'm saying this but, even tastes better...) Fat fish is now a staple for my friends and me. Whenever we don't know where to get dinner, or are starving and craving some comforting Japanese food - fat fish is always the answer. I've now saved fat fishes phone number into my contacts just to make things easier. It has a small private lot, which is nice, but it can get crowded during rush times. There is an outside seating area, but I've never seen anyone eat out there before (though we usually come to fat fish at night). Inside, the restaurant is also small with booths around the sides. It has an alright feel, but we usually take our food to-go. When we do sit down, the service is also alright - it isn't particularly slow, but it is not fast either. I love getting their sashimi salad and udon (any of them - even the veggie udon is great). Their seafood udon and ramen is my favorite. The ramen is a bit spicier, but both of them are huge and filled with seafood and noodles. My second favorite would probably be their miso ramen. The cherry blossom, the 49er's, Big Cali roll, Philadelphia roll are popular with us. We've even gotten the small sushi platter which is perfect for 3 people (2 hungry guys and 1 hungry girl). The beef teriyaki bowl and the Oyaku donburi and they were both really good. The sashimi donburi is like a sashimi salad but bigger and with rice and an egg! Overall, we really like this place. It has decent quality for SUCH a low price and we have been here multiple times. I don't even remember the count. Been here a few times and sushi is OKAY, it's not bad and it's definitely not the best. I still come back because their sushi is cheap and if im craving sushi, its a quick fix. This place is not your typical sushi restaurant, as soon as you walk in you see a large menu hanging on top of the wall. You order and pay the cashier then seat yourself. ive tried their lion king roll, aloha roll, philly roll and unagi roll and theyre all decent. I would say skip on the bento boxes.. my mom once tried their salmon terriyaki bento and she said it was below average, LOL. Fat Fish is a hole-in-the-wall, decent small American style sushi restaurant on the border of San Leandro and Castro Valley. It can get pretty crowded during dinner time hours, so you might want to go for an early dinner or just take out. The food is still very good, albeit it being a fast-food style, and the baked rolls and offerings on the bento box are various. I was not disappointed with the Cherry Blossom and Black Dragon roll. Also, I find it interesting how they also serve a CHICKEN TERIYAKI ROLL! I didn't get to try it yet, but I think that's a roll worth spending a couple bucks on. The reason why I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 despite it being decent quality food is the service, cleanliness, and ambience of the place. However, it is obviously family-owned so I shouldn't be complaining but more servers that provide more attention to needy customers would lessen the pressure of the scene. I normally don't have a problem with Fat Fish. But for some reason, this time around, was just horrible. I called ahead to order for pickup. I remember speaking clearly that I wanted the Vegi roll. The lady proceeded to tell me that it'll take about 10-15 minutes. Once I got there, I went to pay and tried to charge me for $16.00. Thank god I asked what was in there because they got the wrong order. I mean I understand, wrong order sometimes happen. I asked her if she can change it because I wanted the vegi roll. Holy crap. This little place is grimey as hell on the outside. Looks like an abandoned taco hut. Inside? It looks like an old Shakey's Pizza.. A restaurant the world forgot... But you can bet your ass that come 7pm, the line is out the door and it's for a damn good reason. The sushi here is AMAZING. It's almost magical. I was skeptical ordering from the menu above the cash register and I couldn't believe it when our sushi came to the table. I got the Red Lion Roll. Baked Salmon.. It was pretty fantastic. Even the other rolls.. you know, the ones you don't get because you know yours will be better? Even the other rolls were good. Really good. Full flavored with incredibly cheap prices.. The service was friendly too. It must be some kind of secret restaurant trick to keep the outside filthy so no one would ever think to eat fish at your restaurant.. but surprise... By the looks of it, Fat Fish doesn't seem like it would be good but surprisingly, it delivers fast, fresh, tasty and reliable sushi each and every time I eat here, which is a lot. Their menu is displayed in front of the restaurant, above the heads of the sushi chefs and cash register, in plain view for all to see and choose. They have about 70+ different rolls to choose from, which is a lot considering this isn't an upscale sushi restaurant. Most of the sushi rolls are tasty, but some favorites are the 49er's, Raider's, Bay Scallop, Lion King, Crispy, Power, Honeymoon, Papa Roll, and Pink Lady. All winners in my book. Their chirashi bowl of sashimi over rice is also incredibly fresh and high-quality for the price, so much so that I get kind of suspicious sometimes. How can it be so cheap for the quality? Hmm..but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Both their seaweed and tofu salad are also good and fresh, and my mom especially loves their salmon teriyaki bento box. I think it's good as well, but not nearly as much as she does. She insists that the salmon is especially fresh and only gets her salmon teriyaki from here. While their other food is good too, you should come here especially for the sushi. Good, cheap sushi is hard to find these days (it's either one or the other) so I suggest eating here before they go out of business or their kind vanish from existence. Judging by the way they just opened a new location in Pleasanton, though, I don't think they're going anywhere anytime soon. The Korean man who owns this place is also incredibly sweet and he is always putting Korean music shows on TV or the latest football/basketball/sports game for anyone who asks. I have been a customer of fat Fish ever since I moved to San Leandro many years ago. After a recent visit I will no longer be giving them my money. No one in the restaurant is wearing masks, the manager is sitting at a table on his computer not wearing one. They are endangering the public's health as well as their employees. Fairly cheap sushi. I've been here three times. First time, I dined in and got a sashimi dinner. Something around 15 pieces for $16. Pretty fat pieces too. My friend asked for ponzu sauce and they didn't know what it was and then asked the chef and said sorry. Weird. My gf also asked which rolls were spicy because she wanted something spicy. When her roll came out it wasn't spicy in the slightest. She had to request a side of sriracha to make it spicier. Not super fancy here but decent sushi for cheap. Not a typical sushi place from the inside. More like a casual quick dining spot. Second try, came here and got the udon to go. Took it home. Good size. Very flavorful. The flavor of the broth is sweeter than any udon broth I've ever had. It was too sweet for my gf which is weird because I'm not a fan of sweet like her. I really did like it though. As I continued to eat the flavor became too much and I couldn't finish it. It would be good for me in a smaller portion. Third was today, we ordered two rolls to go and ate at home.
