So I am recuperating from some nasty bug the disgusting offspring gave me. I am fever-free and finally able to swallow without needing to close my eyes and wince in abject misery. I wanted some miso soup and thought some Wakame salad (seaweed salad) would be soothing. I was so right! We ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll, The Heart attack Roll, miso soup, Wakame salad, the sushi combo and a Sapporo. A lot of food but I was ravenous after not eating for several days and my taste buds were all over the place. Our huge meal only cost us $32! Great deal! Unfortunately, they were out of the spicy tuna. That is a first! We have come here numerous times and they have never been out of any item. They are definitely entitled to one off evening. The waitress was very sweet and gracious when she told us about the item being out of stock. She offered us several other substitutions and apologized profusely. The spicy salmon was a pretty decent substitution. No matter what the item though, I have always enjoyed the freshness and time and care that goes into preparation. Fat Fish is a small restaurant but always clean and comfortable. The wait staff are always friendly and they endure me eyeing the menu for ages trying to make up my mind. I have seen large groups come in for business lunches and parties and they have always looked like they were having the best time. It is great to see a restaurant treat large parties as well as they treat a single couple with prompt, friendly customer service. This is also a great place to bring kids. It is small but unpretentious, the food is good, and the prices are right for having the wee ones try out some sushi or even sashimi. We bring our kids occasionally and they have a ball! Good place for a quick bite of sushi. Walking in, it's quite obvious this place doesn't have the atmosphere of an authentic Japanese restaurant. This isn't really a place to go for a fancy dinner date, but you get a lot of food for your money compared to other sushi places. The rolls are good, but you definitely get what you pay for; my only complaint is the sauce that they drizzle over the rolls is way too sweet and overpowers the taste of the sushi. We've been recently looking for good sushi restaurants around this area. What caught my eye when coming across Fat Fish on Yelp was the wide range of sushi on their menu and pictures. I have to say that I really enjoyed Fat Fish compared to several places I've been to so far. Not too much rice (so you don't get filled up with rice), not over sauce-y, and the right amount of sutff on the inside. We got the: Super Hamachi, California roll, Avacado, and Mama Roll. Zero star for the restaurant and owner! Order the chicken katsu and my chicken is still raw. Told the staff and they were willing to redo my order. The owner instructed the cooker to re-fried my chicken katsu. The katsu was so deep fried that its dry and dark old oil. I went back to the staff that I can't eat this, its disgusting! The owner told his staff that either i will eat that or order regular chicken teriyaki instead, but he will not make me a new chicken katsu. I never been treated this terrible before, but make a customer take this is unbelievable. After walking in (seeing only one Asian person working in the entire joint *red flag*), not knowing what was going, puzzling the situation... The pressure!!! This place sure is popular! After we ordered, we got ourselves a self-seating table. A group was vacating a booth, and we waited for it to be cleaned. The waitress haphazardly swished a cloth across the table surface, flinging crap all over the place *red flag*. As we waited for our food to arrive... I wanted water and looked over at the the water station which was self help and had an open ice bucket *red flag*. The stacked cups leaned against all the surrounding surfaces *red flag* Ordered: Spicy Salmon Roll - meh.. Temperature *red flag* Salmon Belly - tasted better than it looked... The best word to describe it... "Brisket" and think charcoal brisket, not yummy bbq brisket. Bento: Tempura + Katsu - Katsu was fried in old oil... Apparent by the coloring. Tasted ok. Tempura was ok. Considering how inexpensive this place was, a red flag should have been waving... And it did, but I figured, with all the positive reviews, how bad could it be? And there were so many patrons!! And my bf said "well, we are here already, might as well try it." And no, I didn't have high expectations for this place. And no, I don't have a weak stomach cuz I will eat developing-country-street-food all day everyday. But now I'm at home, penning this in between bouts of nausea and a headache even Advil won't help with. My boyfriend has managed to fall asleep after many long trips to the loo. If you are a sushi snob, you may not, no more like will not, like this place at all. You have to order from the counter, the fish isn't A+ grade, more like A- or B+, the rolls are bill and not as tight as you may be used to. The place used to be an old Taco Bell and is in a bad neighborhood. This place is really cool. I'm glad we discovered it. It's really small but has ample seating. The atmosphere is cool... sort of a hybrid between an express/fast food place and intimate/chic Japanese hole-in-the-wall. Probably the best thing about FF is the overall value. About the same as our Alameda favorite Kai's, about $15 feeds two with tons of teriyaki and sushi. Their service is friendly and prompt. Their menu is pretty expansive (literally, it covers a whole wall above the counter where you order from!). Perhaps the only drawback is that, for being an express sort of place, the quantity/size of the food items are not quite as large as possibly expected and in general you receive slightly less than maybe hoped for (examples: smaller sized fillet of salmon in the salmon teriyaki, no rice included with certain things like a salmon teriyaki / sushi combo, etc). Pretty much what I mean is I would expect the same price paid to be more filling from this place than say from our main favorite (Kai's), but it ends up being about the same. i was immediately excited to find a hole in the wall sushi spot with a very relaxed atmosphere. It's served more like a fast food restaurant; ordering and paying before being seated, which is different for me. When I received the food, it just didn't look right. The colors were vibrant, and even though Sushi is my favorite food, the rolls just didn't look appetizing. After examining more closely, i realized the shrimp in the tempura was not fresh -- maybe they were frozen shrimp tempura? The panko crust offered NO crunch - and thats a definite warning sign. Mmmm Fat Fish is the treasure of San Leandro in my eyes. Whenever my boyfriend tries to convince me to visit him in San Lorenzo he'll usually have to tempt me with a detour to Fat Fish. The prices on the food is so cheap - it definitely keeps the tummy and wallet full and happy. - Fish is fresh. Never been any problems with that. My only complaint would be the way they cute the tuna in my boyfriend's chirashi bowl. - I like that they put noodles in the free miso soup! - SOOOO many rolls. They're all so delicious. They're kind of rolled a bit loose so they may fall apart when I pick them up with my chopsticks but it's not like I can fit that big ol' thing in my mouth all at once anyways. - Service is friendly. I think it's weird you pay first then get served - but we still leave a tip on the table after we're done. Ordered a baked scallop roll--scallops raw, rice was mushy, the wrap didn't fit the roll and waited 15 minutes for this disgusting thing? Thaw your scallops first if you're going to use frozen ones for sushi. Change your sushi guy or train him. Maybe download audio teachings on how to make sushi and put it on his phone since he has an earbud in his ear while he's making these disaster rolls. At Fat Fish Sushi you get what you pay for. You know why their sushi is relatively cheap compared to most other sushi restaurants? Low quality and lack of substance. A typical sushi roll is basically lots of rice, lots of imitation "crab", chunk of avocado, and a sliver or paper-thin fish on top. So you're basically paying for an overpriced California roll that you can easily make at home. Do not order the Lion King roll there. Who would've thought that instead of getting a piece of salmon sashimi on top, they'd substitute CANNED salmon? And they had the decency to charge nearly as much as a REAL Lion King roll! And what's the deal with serving bento boxes WITHOUT rice? This place is really something. Meh. This is what I expected with such cheap prices. The rolls were huge but they mostly consisted of rice. The cuts of fish were tiny inside the rolls and the sauces were gelatinous and gross. We got a tempura battered roll and it was actually not fried enough (something I am not used to saying) and was completely soggy. I called in and ordered the sushi, never having been to the location before but figured it was going to be good since Yelp usually doesn't fail me. But to my surprise, it is in a very....sketchy looking area (don't get me wrong, I'll go to some shady places for good food but this was not the case). The girl working the counter had black contacts in and seemed like she was on a sedative, making it feel more doomsday like. When I told her I had never been in before she stated, "Most people feel weird the first time they come in because of our location". Insinuating that she too, agreed that it was not the best part of town. I usually buy the rolls here but I thought I would try the Bento boxes what a mistake!!! So disappointed tonkatsu was so thin and hard as a rock and burnt on the sides, beef teriyaki tough like rubber meat and the Saba was not fresh and very dry? The sushi that came with the box was also not fresh? I went from a loyal customer to a very disappointed one!!! I will never order the bento box ever again. What a waste of money. First off i really like their idea of walking in and ordering from the big board and waiting for your number to be called to get your food. And the people that work here is really friendly and nice. But the sushi is just not there. I mean the place is really really cheap but you get what you pay for. The quality is very low, the fish doesn't seem too fresh but it still taste ok. I tried a few different rolls and they were all just ok, nothing really to talk about. The lion king was pretty small and the salmon was really small on it. The other rolls were pretty big but didn't taste too good. The cherry blossom just didn't taste right, but it looked real good. Overall the new owners here are really trying, but if they don't up their quality of food they might just end up like the old place Ozeki. Gone. Been here a few times. Not the best quality, and terrible customer service. Placed a phone order, I was told my order would be ready in 15-20 minutes. I arrived 30 minutes after I placed my order and they were clueless. Asked if I called the right place, in which I checked my call log and told them the number I called. They said they didnt put it in the system. They asked if I could wait another 10 minutes, I said sure if you hook me up and if not I'll go somewhere else. A bit difficult to find. Didn't really look like any sushi place I've been to, but I usually hear good stuff about Fat Fish. Finally decided to go and try it. Limited parking. Walked in and was blasted with the usual feel-good sushi smells. There's a HUGEEEEEEEEEE board with all sorts of sushi rolls and combinations you can order off of. They pretty much have all the basic sushi restaurant foods. I got the sushi bento with tempura and friend got sushi bento with the salmon teriyaki. Was definitely eyeing the rolls, but I craving a bento. One of the upsides of Fat Fish is that they have a pretty good takeout system as well as options to dine at the restaurant. We took a seat and it didn't take long for the waiter to arrive with the miso soup. Then arrived the rest of the meal. Miso Soup - pretty generic except instead of tofu cubes, there were little strands of white rice noodle. Not udon...but like thin strands. Not that it affected the taste, just different. Sushi Bento - got what i paid for. everything was tasty. salad was good with that white sesame dressing. sashimi and sushi was alright. Tempura - was delicious! i was pleasantly surprised too. not greasy, crunchy, golden pieces of tempura. they said 5 pieces on the menu but i ended up with 8. Pretty good tempura. Would have given a 3 star if it wasn't for the tempura. It makes sense for them to have a good fryer. A lot of their specialty rolls probably require them to fry or have tempura bits or whatnot on them. Service was pretty good. We had this really big white guy. Pretty good looking and well groomed. This place is legit, walking distance from my house, cheap food, good prices and japanese pop videos on a 50" Plasma Screen TV. It is the cheapest and best sushi for its price around San Leandro. I have almost ordered half the menu, but the rolls stuck out to me: Lion King- $7 Dragon Roll- under $7 e14 Roll- under $6 Volcano Roll- under $7 I always judge the sushi restaurant by the quality of their california rolls and the Lion KIng. To me the california rolls is the base for must of the sushi that is made, they put some tempura on it and call it the crunchy roll, they put caviar on it and call it a volcano roll, sprinkle some crack on it and call it a home boy roll. I judge the Lion King because to me that is about the best roll u can offer. They both taste mighty delicious. The only problem i have with the place is the fast food style. You have to pay for your order when you walk in and get your own drinks. Its always a toss up with this place regrading customer service, when its busy they just call your number to pick up your food. But when its not busy they serve you. I am no longer a fat fish customer. This is how last night went.... I ordered two rolls, both with no ginger. I hate ginger. The first roll comes out and I can tell they put ginger on the plate but removed it. What if I was allergic to ginger!?! Anyways....... The second roll comes out and it has ginger on the plate. I handed the plate back to the waiter and said " I asked for no ginger". I kid you not, he takes his hand and reaches onto the plate with his bare hands to remove the ginger while I have the plate mid air. I said " it's okay to take the ginger off the plate with your hand like that?" He says yes and walks off. I'm like wtf. At this point I don't even want the roll. It was a San leandro roll under the deep fried section of the menu I ordered. When the waiter brought the roll to the table it had raw salmon on top. ( not stated in the description) I politely ask for a refund and stated I didn't know it was uncooked. The owner caught a attitude and offered to give me half my money back. For the price, it's extremely decent. Cheaper than most Japanese restaurants, yet they don't skimp on the portion of each dish. It's well worth your time if you're looking for a quick sushi bite. I went there yesterday for the first time and was astound by the low price of the general menu. What I ordered was spam musubi and poki salad. (A bit odd since I'm ordering Hawaiian food in a Japanese restaurant.) My boyfriend ordered the calamari tempura and California roll. We both spend roughly around $8 which is a good deal, since we order two things. When you go in the restaurant, you order first and then you find yourself a table. I've been coming here way before they changed ownership and became Fat Fish in 2009. Fat Fish is a big improvement in food quality over the previous ownership (the food was always burnt). Fat Fish is my go to place to satisfy my sushi cravings for super cheap. Their most expensive roll is under $10! My favorites include the Papa Roll, Lion King Roll, Dragon Roll and Bay Island Roll. Their sushi isn't the absolute best sushi I've had but it will definitely satisfy my sushi cravings. I don't usually get a lot of sushi with uncooked fish so I'm not the best judge of the quality of their fish, but it's decent as far as I can tell. Their deluxe bento box comes with miso soup, rice, salad, tempura and two items of your choice for under $13! The owner (I think he's the owner, he's the one on their website) is always really nice and he's usually there every time I go. They take your order at the register and bring your food to your table. They also have a water dispenser and ice bucket so you can serve yourself. Their parking lot is small so you may have to find street parking which isn't hard to find. Fat Fish will give you the most for your money so come here for any Japanese food cravings. read more

My friend Vanessa has been telling me about this place for over a year now and finally, last night, we chose to go here after I picked her up from work. This place is near Bayfair Mall, off of East 14th/Mission Blvd. It looks like it used to be an old taco bell. There is a small lot where you can park or street parking... but not very much. So when I went in, I felt as I was hit in the face with menu. They have a huge board with the menu on it, which has a LOT of items to choose from. I got the white dragon roll and San Leandro roll. Both were delish. I shared with my friend; she got a roll with tempura flakes, and crispy rice on the outer part, which was rather interesting and good. The two men were very friendly, full of smiles and helpful. The girl behind the counter needs to smile more. She didn't look very happy to be there; kinda deer-in-headlights kinda way. All in all, I was very happy with Fat fish. For the price, the friendly service, and the quality of the food (which matches all the other Japanese food places) I totally recommend this place and will be back. P.S. - And it didn't make me sick! I'm not a sushi snob. I love sushi & every chef is different. I do go to a lot of places & they have their own presentation and taste, which is fine. So this is actually my second time going there. I got the same thing both times (lion king & dragon roll). Both times I ordered take out as well. They looked thrown together & the rolls are falling apart but they tasted okay. I tried it again. It was worse then last time. Again presentation was thrown together. Second on my dragon roll all of the salmon was slimy and tough like it was the skin of the salmon and not the meat. Third in my lion king roll I found a little hard rock? I don't know what it was maybe a seed? Maybe other people have had better experiences. Maybe I need to eat in instead of take out. I was craving some sushi and I was recommend by a friend of mine that this place has pretty decent sushi for the buck, so decided to come here to try it out. The place is in a pretty ghetto area of East 14, but it is ok it was during the day so no worry. I ordered the lion king roll, scallop roll, crunchy roll, and the sashimi. The crunchy roll was good! it was fried perfectly and i like it alot reminds me of a lot of other sushi restaurant, but its not soggy which makes it good. the baked rolls however, ehhhhhhhhh not the biggest fan. The scallop roll was pretty good they give huge scallops compare to other sushi places so i like that alot. however both the bake roll was too sweet and way too saucy. there no torch taste to it, usually why i love baked sushi so much is for that torch taste. i mean still good filled me up and its was pretty cheap too so no complaints. the sashimi was alright was not hella good but good enough for me, i love how they cut it thick makes me feel like im getting my money worth!!! i love how the menu is set up i dislike those plastic menu you hold onto because who know what kind of germs your holding before eating. i give this a 4 due to friendly staff cheap price for pretty decent food, ill just avoid the bake sushi rolls next time, but overall ill come back whenever i'm near the area! read more

Whoa! Don't order like you would normally..these rolls are huge!!! Great selection and prices! They get really busy So don't be offended if they don't wait on you hand and foot. This is more of a take out place with tables to accommodate those that want to eat there. Can't wait to go back! read more
