Oh boy... I don't want to offend my relatives who have Yelp, but yikes! I was having an especially rough day one week. Being a school teacher... it happens... a lot. Well, I was trolling through Target and I ran into my older sister. We had a few words, parted ways, then she asked if I had dinner. She suggested Fat Fish, and since I had never been, I was game. I had heard that it was an order and pay first situation, which I wasn't too excited about. I like to sit down and think about what I'm going to get without being pressured about someone waiting behind me. I was a little overwhelmed, and didn't want to get anything I would regret, so I got the two item bento box. My sister said she would pay, "Happy Birthday," but when I saw the total (like $16), I was like, "That's for one person, right!?" I couldn't believe how cheap. I was thinking that this was great! ...Not so much. When the food came, I saw why it was so cheap. A sliver thin slice of teriyaki salmon, tiny pieces of sashimi, and very little salad and rice. The smallest portions I have ever had AND IT WASN'T GOOD. The salmon tasted good, but was overcooked. The sashimi did not even taste like fish. I forget what it tasted like, but I didn't even want to finish the tiny bit I had to eat. This is not a sushi place. Sushi is a special thing that takes time and special care in the creation. This is a fast food version of sushi that should not exist. Sushi should not be ordered in haste, nor made with economy in mind. The only thing actually okay there as the shrimp tempura. Everything else, which is the futomaki, katsudon, and the tamago roll (oh god, don't even get me started on the tamago roll). In total, it costed $26.84. As I've mentioned before, the shrimp tempura was the best thing out of all of these. There were four pretty generous pieces altogether. Also, the sauce tasted great with the tempura. However, futomaki and the katsudon (especially the katsudon) were extremely disappointing. The futomaki's fillings were out of proportion. The katsudon didn't smell very appealling. The moment I smelled the scent, I wanted to barf. Also, the so-called actual 'katsudon' didn't look like or taste like katsudon at all. The appearance looked more like an omelette rather than pork. It was also served with mushrooms and onions. However, they also added noodles. What was the use of noodles? So extra. What made me completely give up on the place was my order of the egg (tamago) roll. The problem is, they didn't even bring the dish out! It should be common sense not to keep a customer waiting for more than ten minutes. Horrible service. All in all, I definitely do not recommend going to this place. Terrible customer service. I love sushi and tried this place a few times, mainly getting rolls and $2 japanese beer. I visited again and ordered their sushi bento box, thinking it would be the same quality as the rolls. Boy, was I wrong! I received 3 pieces of nigiri; one salmon, one tuna and one I could not even figure out what it was. 6 pieces of a california roll, salad, miso soup, and pork katsu. The tuna nigiri looked terrible and I took a nibble and was not a fan. The salmon was better but still not fresh fresh. The salad was watered down and runny, you couldn't taste anything buy mayo. The miso soup had a tiny amount of noodle in it and one and a half pieces of seaweed. By far the worst miso I've ever had and it's hard to mess up miso. The california rolls weren't too bad, they tasted better then everything else. Oh and I ordered a spirte at the counter and was never given it. The girl kept checking on us and she never brought it out. I didn't care at that point I just wanted to leave. Overall, terrible. I will never get the bento box ever ever again and I suggest going elsewhere for one, say Sushi Avenue on Marina. read more

Fat fish is by far my favorite restaurant. It's not fancy sit down place, it's more of like a fast food chain that does sushi. The have a great selection of rolls all UNDER $10! Some of my favorite roll options are spicy california, honeymoon roll, bay island roll, lion king roll, and lastly my absolute favorite tuna scream roll! Some people have this idea that if sushi is cheap in cost its cheap in quality. Definitely not the case here. Five stars "as good as it gets" in my book, by that I mean the the cost in comparison with the food, of course there are better places but as a college student the convince and cost of this place is incredible. I've been here a few times now simply because I live a stones throw away. One thing that's interesting is how they keep costs down. The entire menu is ordered fast food style. In such, the entire menu is generally $1-2 cheaper than equivalent items at other sushi restaurants. The service style may put some people off cause it does give a vibe off that the food will be cheap. However, it's not the case, the rolls are adequate and the hot dishes are as well. Although, beyond all the evidence I've seen in terms of eating the food, I still can't quite convince myself that it's not cheap quality ingredients. That's my own problem and not the restaurants. I've been to a lot of Japanese restaurants, and a good sushi has the freshest fish and not much crab meat in the inside. Have you notice most of the rolls that you order are fat and long? Is because they put too much artificial crab meat inside to make up for that other portion of the roll. If you want take out rolls and sushi, fat fish is the place to go. "OH that place! That yellow and green building?! The one that looks like a Taco Bell?!" Haha. I have been going to this place for years and it has never let me down. I would like to comment on the fact that the prices are impeccable. Under $10 sushi?! You have won my heart Fat Fish. This is my go-to place if I ever crave sushi. Some of my favorite rolls are: Super Philli, Super Rainbow, Cherry Blossom, Best Friends, 49er roll. But, I try to venture out when I feel a bit adventurous. I've never had a bad roll here and it impresses me every time I go here. "Ah, I wonder if it'll be bad today." BUT NEVER. I usually order 1-2 rolls and I ALWAYS have left overs. They definitely don't skimp out of the size of the rolls. Another reason to come to this place. I forgot that they had a water station here and my dumbass asked the person that worked there for water and she glared at me! But that was my bad I suppose. Haha. So, don't make my mistake and ask the people that work there for water... Unless you have some weird fetish with people glaring at you then by all means! A great affordable sushi place in San Leandro. They have a wide selection of rolls to choose from and it's semi-self serve. When you walk in, you immediately see the big menu, where 3/4 of it is rolls. I personally love the big nick and order it almost every time. Depending on my hunger, I might get two rolls or a roll and bento box, which you can choose 2-3 items and choose from two different bento boxes. They include miso soup and salad. The soup is hit and miss because sometimes it's a little too salty. Beware, the sushi bento does not include rice and had to be purchased separately. They a small cooler with drinks and beer or a complimentary water cooler to choose from for beverages. You're given a number and then you seat yourself and they bring you food to you. Again, it's not the most well decorated or inviting place, with old worn in and tattered benches, and the customer service is eh. The men making the sushi behind the counter are ways friendly, but the ladies, they can be rude unfriendly with attitude. I notice they're always nicer when the owner is there, but still not super friendly. The parking lot is real small, only about 10-12 parking spaces, but street parking is available if your brave enough to park your ride on E14th street. read more

Good thing we only ordered gyoza, fried chicken (Karaage) and two beer. Nothing was good besides their ice cold bottled beer! Gyoza was tasteless and mushy. Karaage was HORRIBLE, it was bland boiled/steamed thin sliced chicken fried in half inch thick tempura batter that wasn't even crunchy! It was all soggy and most of the pieces were just straight batter. I can only imagine how bad their sushi rolls and other foods are like if they can't even do simple frying dishes right. Came in on a rainy Saturday afternoon and they were rockin and rollin! This place is always busy so it was great to walk in and not see a line. I ordered an orange ball, Cali roll, Caterpillar roll and fried salmon. The rolls were delicious and the orange ball is my new favorite! The only downside is that the rolls fell apart and were loosely put together. However I'm wondering if they were trying to just appease the customers since they were packed. I think that Fat Fish has a great fast food Japanese concept. I was one of the few patrons in the restaurant on a early evening. I can imagine that if the restaurant was full, they would have a difficult time getting the food out in a timely manner. The board of sushi rolls is great, especially because I love looking at pictures of food. I tried 4 different rolls which were all ok (not great and not horrible). I think that the sushi rolls are decent, considering the price that you pay for them. If you want higher quality sushi, you will want to visit Sushi House in Alameda. The waitress and the owner are both really nice and friendly, so I would like to see them succeed. I might give this place one more try and next time I will order their bento boxes instead. read more

I love this place. I stumbled upon it one day while taking a walk on my lunch break. I don't eat sushi so I always get a Bento Box with tempura and teriyaki chicken. I have never been disappointed. I've even told other people about them and they have also become Fat Fish regulars. -1 star for the music selection.... I've been here roughly five times since moving to the 'Dro. I was actually quite satisfied with my food the first few times I went there, because I found their Teriyaki chicken to be pretty damn good, and the $7.50 Bento box and $1 draft beers were a deal. On my fourth visit, my friend and I ordered two beers each with our meal. Manager later comes by the table to ask if a pitcher would be okay instead. Perhaps it was my fault for assuming he meant "pitcherS", but the end result was that we received roughly half the beer we had paid for. Hmmm... Next time through, came as part of a group of eight hungry and thirsty individuals. Much food was purchased and many dollar drafts were consumed. Reviews of the food were mixed, with the common compliant amongst the snobbier members of the party being that the tuna was not fresh. Of course I had my Bento box with the chicken T, so I was a happy camper. HOWEVER, as I went back to order a final draft with which to wash down my food, I was informed by the manager (paraphrasing here) that "the dollar beers are only for the meal, and usually you can only order one." Huh? The sign outside the Fat Fish advertises dollar draft beer, and does not contain any stipulations in writing! Surely this was a classic bait-and-switch? The manager dude tried to smooth things over by saying it was "okay, this time", but I couldn't help but feel a little displeased. If my party had gone there to just down dollar beers without ordering any food, then he may have had a point, but we ordered $10-20 dollars worth of grub per person. The upshot being that, while I may come again with a friend or two, many of our other regular Friday night dinner crew were more offended than I, and have since stated they have no desire to ever return to the Fat Fish. I love this place. Their take-home menus must have a self-destruct sequence or something, though, because they always disappear from my fridge magnet. The place itself is small, but decent. I've never had any problems with their rolls like I do at other places (falling apart, etc...) and I definitely recommend this place to friends. This is not your typical sushi restaurant. You go in you order at the counter and you pay. I like this place because its close, its cheap, and its good enough to satisfy my sushi craving. The rolls are good - although in my opinoin they put too much rice in the rolls. FYI stick with the rolls I get the spicy grilled chicken entree and I didn't like it. Sushi is my second type of foods after burritos and this place is satisfies my cravings when I crave sushi. The sushi is pretty good especially considering the price of each roll. Lion king, spider, San Leandro, tuna scream, 49ers and super philli roll are my favorites. All of the rolls are under $10 unlike some sushi places where Lion King is about $12+. I could just order two rolls for myself and I'm pretty stuffed; sometimes I have leftovers! They have a little water dispenser if you dine in and they have two television to keep you entertained while you eat. I've never taken sushi to go so I cannot comment on that. The building looks like an old Taco Bell which they converted into a sushi restaurant which isn't a bad thing. The parking lot is a bit small and the curve is a bit steep so if you have a lowered car make sure you take it slow and at an angle! I feel like the furniture and dining area may need a face-lift and maybe some cleaning. Some of the booth's cushion are worn out and it feels like I'm about to sink into the booth. They have napkin dispensers with random people on them which is a bit odd in my eyes. I've also had to deal with annoying flys trying to land on my sushi while I'm dining in. Bottom line is that the food is good especially for that price but the food doesn't do all the justice when I'm not 100% comfortable while I'm dining in. First time here, always noticed it is crowded. Old Taco Bell building, not too much parking, not too much lighting in lot. Walked in door and found out you have to order your choices first, then find your seat. Kind of reminds me of a sushi McDonalds. Their menu board has close to 100 items, not easy to order right away unless you study menu before you get there. The sushi prices are very reasonable, quality Ok. Ordered the poke salad, which was too spicy and not very good. Bento box was only $ 8.95 and tasted good. Ordered cherry blossom roll, albacore sushi & California deluxe roll which were cheap and pretty tasty. Ordered the Sexy roll, which was really spicy. Warning, when they say spicy it's spicy. A lesson in "you get what you pay for" Fat Fish is inexpensive but the quality is lacking. Rolls have too much rice and the amount of fish you get is quite small. Usually cheaper ingredients like krab and cucumber dominate the makeup. I stopped coming here when the tuna in my spicy tuna roll came shredded, a signature sign of masking poor-quality ingredients. It seems to shoot for "good enough" sushi but it falls short. I'd rather pay extra for better quality or just not eat sushi at all if it feels too expensive, this attempt at meeting in the middle isn't working. read more
