The service was excellent. I ordered the bento box with the california roll and teriyaki chicken. The chicken were shredded and wasn't fresh. Most of the chicken pieces were so hard that I was not able to bite them. Was not close to the picture that is on their website.The roll was so so. The salad was very fresh and so was the rice. A slice of orange came with it and it was refreshing but not sweet at all. My partner order two rolls.The tuna was not fresh and the color was pale, dull, and old. The tempura was soggy and the seaweed wrap tasted stale. The Fat Fish in Pleasanton is the place to go. We were very disappointed. Fat Fish is a small sushi restaurant on E14 in San Leandro. When I first started coming here, the sushi was good and the portions were generous. They still have good sized portions, but the sushi is hit or miss sometimes. I did enjoy the grilled teriyaki salmon, very good. It gets really crowded here for takeout, sometimes the line is out the door even for call in orders, especially on Friday nights. I like how they have the menu, big with pictures as soon as you walk in, makes you want to try different rolls. Just ok to me!! read more

I like to try to go places twice before I review just so I can give a rounded opinion. I've been here twice now and unfortunately I don't think I'll be back. The first time I came I took a quick look over the big menu board and ordered two rolls (both had raw fish) and I was very pleased with what I got. The fish was fresh and the flavors were on point. I looked over the menu while I waited for my order and decided what I'd like to try the next time I happened to be in the area. Well, I happened to be in the area. I ordered the two rolls I decided on last time and was excited to try them since my last experience was so good. Unfortunately, this time was not so good. The two rolls again had raw fish, but this time the fish had an actual fishy smell. I didn't realize the stench at first because I could smell the unagi sauce on one of the rolls, so I ate a piece of fish out of one sushi. It tasted like it was on the verge of spoiling so I spat it out and tossed everything. Also in my order was oyakodon which was so over cooked it lifted off the rice in one piece. Some of the dish was burned and there was no sauce at all. Lion king roll is kinda small and overall was so so. This place is great! I think I've been here once or twice, and you really can't be the prices of this location. They give you a lot of different rolls, fresh fish with every roll that we ordered. My one downfall is i'm pretty sure they messed up our order, but we did receive an extra roll that was a California roll. Well, it ain't bad, but there's very minimal service involved as this is the type of place where you walk up to the counter to order. That being said, I've eaten here countless times and if I still lived in the area, I'd still be eating here somewhat regularly. It's good for what it is - and that's affordable, no frills food served quick. They have a pretty large selection to choose from and everything is pretty decent. Again, don't come here thinking you're going to get some bomb sushi or anything, but the food isn't bad and it definitely can hit the spot. Fat fish is by far one of my favorite sushi spots in the Bay Area!!! You get good quality sushi at an AFFORDABLE price! Everything always tastes fresh and the staff is so nice and helpful. You'll always see the owners either on the laptop in the restaurant or behind the counter helping his staff. When you first arrive you go to the counter with the HUGE menu above and order for there or to go. If you are eating there you get a table tent number and then get to seat yourself and they bring it out to you. To go you have to wait outside (because Covid) but they call your number once it's ready. I always make sure to get the some sort of nigiri. The fish is sliced thiccccc and is placed over well seasoned sushi rice. It's rare for me to need to add wasabi or soy sauce to it unless I'm feeling like I just want wasabi. I backed into the parking spot and can see the whole restaurant. I Noticed that none of the workers are wearing a mask. They layout their whole menu on the wall board above the counter. I can see the Japanese owner sitting on the single table and all his Mexican staff behind the counter which I thought was funny. They were not friendly at all even the owner. One of the guys was kind rude to the customer as he was trying to see if he could have it to-go instead. The place was old and run down. They had bench seats and you sit yourself. It's basically a fast food Japanese restaurant with no service and many ordered to-go's. My husband ordered their chicken bento with old sashimi fish and a volcano roll. The volcano was a lot. I ordered their Amazon roll and red lion roll. All the rolls was mainly all fake crab and lots of mayo. The tuna in my Amazon roll was not fresh at all and looked old. Cheap, fast, filling American sushi with its own private parking lot. Fat Fish Sushi is a great option for lunch or dinner if you're looking for a quick American sushi fix. Majority of the rolls here are a California roll base or deep fried smothered in sauce. And mostly under $10. If this is what you're in the mood for, then this is the place for you. Occasionally, I do crave good ol' American style sushi. But after being spoiled with fresh, quality fish, I have difficulty enjoying crazy amounts of imitation crab and crunchies without the element of the raw cuts. The Best Friends roll is a decent option. For somewhere between $7 and $12 you receive three, six-piece rolls, for the price of one. This comes with a basic cali roll, unagi and avo roll, and a spicy tuna and cucumber. It's self-seating, order first and pay, then the food is brought out to you. Utensils and water also self-serve, and for the most part it's a really hassle free experience. It's helpful that it has its own private parking lot, as finding parking on the busy main street may be a nightmare. During my visit, there was a homeless lady who frequently came in to grab cups of water. Finally as we were leaving, the manager came out to tell her that the water is for paying customers only. I have to applaud that 1. They let it slide the first time and 2. Approached her with kindness but in a stern fashion. I would say the situation was dealt with smoothly. At the end of the day, I don't think Fat Fish is a must-try or go-to spot for me. I don't think I'd go out of my way or think twice about having another meal here when in the area. read more

This place has a really wide selection and for a decent price, especially if you are looking for quick, and cheap sushi. With that said, do not go here if you are looking to fulfill your sushi craving. This place would and will be my choice if I'm looking for something basic. We ordered a super shrimp roll, pink lady, mama roll, fried oysters, and poki salad. The fried oyster wasn't served Japanese style. It was more like fish and chip served with tartar sauce. The poki salad was edible because it was smothered in sauce to mask the not so fresh tuna. The super shrimp had so much shrimp, like four pieces in each bite that it just fell apart. I enjoyed it because it had cream cheese which is my favorite. However it was really hard to eat. The mama roll was like a rainbow roll. The pink lady was the only decent thing we could stuff down. I used to come to Fat Fish all the time back in the day. It's a small sushi restaurant with it's own parking lot and a few tables inside. They have good sized portions and reasonable pricing, every broke student's dream! I haven't had it in years, so one nostalgic night I decided to order some take out and try it again. This is definitely not your typical sushi place. This is a fast food style, American sushi. The menu is huge and they have something to suit everyone's tastes. There are lots of different types of fried and baked rolls, and is a great place to go if you are not a huge fan of sashimi and nigiri. That being said, they do also have sashimi and nigiri. The grade of the fish isn't amazing though, I would say probably a tier above buffet sushi. I ordered 1 Lion King roll, 1 Black Dragon roll, 1 Sushi Combo, and 1 Nigiri Sushi (8 piece). The total was about $47 and I probably waited a total of 15 minutes for my to go order, not bad at all. Between my fiance and I we were pretty stuffed afterwards and still had a couple pieces leftover. I would say this is a good place to go if you want some cheap and fast sushi, but I would definitely not go out of my way to get it. read more

We came here several years ago and wanted to check it out again since we were craving some sushi. When we came in, it wasn't as busy as we remembered. We got several types of rolls including the Baked Lobster Roll and wanted to try their sashimi. We also ordered some beers and water which was all self-serve. You pay up first and you get a number plaque to place at your table. It took about 15-20 minutes to get our rolls and we sat in the back to get away from the front. The rolls were decent, but the sashimi just didn't taste very fresh. The yellowtail was very fishy which I was not happy with. Unfortunately this place has gotten bad and I'm done with them. And at one point I was going almost every week. I don't know what happened the past couple years but the quality of food has gone down. I'm not sure if it's because I usually get takeout they overcook the food because most people aren't going to drive back to get the food order corrected. Anyway, their "grilled" items are burnt, as seen in the photos I uploaded. I've gone there many times and all the times I decided to get a "grilled" dish it's always burnt (teriyaki dishes, masubi, etc). If you get the spam masubi and if it looks like it's lightly grilled, turn it over and look at the other side (side "facing" the rice")...I guarantee it will be burnt. I've been to many other Japanese restaurants and "grilled" meant grilled. There's a slight char to the food not black marks. Also they seem to always have issues with their phone where it sounds like they pick up but they don't answer. We would have to try calling back 3-4 times before we get through or we just go somewhere else. Or worse it seems they get busy and they take the phone off the hook. I always love their rolls and they don't disappoint. There's usually parking but if the lot is full, there's a few spots on the street. The restaurant is seat yourself, so you order when you walk in. As I pulled up, the chef behind the counter has his mask at his chin, all 4 employees behind the counter were not following social distancing guidelines. Got two rolls on a whim to satisfy a craving (Dragon and Mama) and you couldn't taste much of anything because the rolls get drowned in sauce. Anything tempura in them were soggy as heck. The tempura tasted great, but if I didn't know it was fresh it had the consistency of leftover tempura because of how soggy everything was - the rice itself was just so wet and soft it immediately transferred the moisture to the tempura. The rolls had the energy of someone making them while turbo high which is hilarious on one hand but on the other, every piece was cut to different sizes on top of that. Whoever trained the folks working there needs to up their game for sure because the sushi itself could be easily so much better with the tiniest of adjustments while still being a decent deal for the prices. If "kinda dilapidated hole in the wall" is okay by your standards, then the space is alright. Good bang for your buck and all, but it was just //so weird// to eat soggy rolls that fell apart while trying to remove them from each other (nothing was cut all the way through) with pieces that were either a few tiny chews or an entire mouthful of sauce-consumed confusion. read more
