I tried their signature duck noodles with Shanghai wide noodles and really enjoyed it - the free range duck leg was fall off the bone tender and the noodles were chewy and went very well with the soy sauce based soup, which was heavy on Chinese spices, similar to a Taiwanese beef noodle soup. I do think the soup could have been slightly more diluted as it was quite salty but it's fine if you don't drink all of it. The tom yum was the daily special and was equally delightful with a sour and creamy flavour that was well-balanced. So glad to have tried this place out; it'll definitely no longer be a last resort the next time I visit Chinatown! read more

I was really disappointed with Fat Mao after hearing all the hype. My boyfriend and I came for dinner during their soft opening and were seated at the window. Service was a bit slow--it was quite hard to get any of the servers' attention from where we were--and the food was just okay. I had the Dan Dan noodles (which are one of my favourite Chinese noodle dishes) and was so surprised by the overwhelming heat and saltiness. It was like they were served in a thick chili peanut sauce rather than a spicy peanut broth. After a few bites (and I tried to eat more since I was hungry) I had to stop eating and share my boyfriend's vegan cold sesame noodles, which were good but overpriced for what they were ($11.99 for shredded vegetables and a small portion of noodles; I think $8 or $9 would be more reasonable). We also had the scallion pancakes, which were good but nothing special. I'm not one to complain to staff when I encounter food I don't like, but I wish I had. I was a bit surprised that my server didn't mention anything at seeing a mostly unfinished bowl of Dan Dan noodles. Lesson learned for the future. I would have maybe come back to try their other dishes, just to see if I was wrong in ordering the Dan Dan noodles, but based on the previous reviews I think I should just satisfy my noodle cravings elsewhere. Solid 3.5 if you're in the mood for Chef Hung & you're in Chinatown haha. Probably an unfair comparison but I digress. Ordered the Dan Dan: very peanut-y, just a tad too strong. Good tasting, enough meat sauce to make this a good deal. The beef brisket for me was better, good chunks of beef as well as some tendon. Not as spicy, even with the extra side order of XO sauce which made quite nicely as per pic. Better than some Chinese dim sum places. Again didn't have that kick so added the hot chilli sauce as well as peppers to the point my nostrils were drooling so that's a good sign. Like this new addition to the hood, increases the draw of Chinatown. Kudos for extra napkins and wrapped chopsticks. Clean washrooms as to be expected for a new building. But be forewarned, it's not aimed for the authentic Asian market if one is picky. read more

Fat Mao was a great dining experience from start to finish. My coworker and I were really looking forward to having some authentic noodles at this new casual joint in Chinatown, and Fat Mao delivered. We went on their Grand Opening day and it was very busy, but we were seated almost immediately even though we had expected to wait. They have a handy automated 'texts you when your table is ready' feature which means we didn't have to wait around outside the restaurant, and there are coffee shops and bars in the area where you can go if you're so inclined. The ambiance is very relaxed, with an open kitchen and bar. It's a small place with limited seating, and even though they've only been open a week or so, you already get a good sense of the vibe they're going for. The servers weren't overly pushy and didn't hover, but were attentive and gave some great suggestions. I ordered the Chiangmai Curry Noodles, and my friend ordered the Braised Duck Noodles. These were easily the best curry noodles I've ever had. They were presented beautifully, but more importantly, they were delicious! The curry broth was mildly spicy and had a surprising amount of sweetness, and the chicken was cooked perfectly and fell off the bone. The Duck Noodles (which I also tried) had a light broth with log roll rice noodles, and a large portion of lamb, which was again cooked perfectly. We also had the Braised Tripe Salad as an appetizer, and it was incredibly flavourful. The tripe was super tasty and came with caramelized shallots and a healthy portion of peanuts and cilantro. We were both really happy with our selections, especially since it was so inexpensive for what we got. The portions were large, and the noodles were clearly made fresh. I am looking forward to when Fat Mao gets their liquor license so I can go back and have a few of the craft beers and try some more items on the menu (especially the Dan Dan noodles)! I know several people who have been there in the last few days and came away with an experience similar to ours. I'm coming back for sure! read more

Great little shop in the Chinatown area. Menu is simple but the food packs flavor. The space is relatively small and only run by 3 people, so service could be a little slow if its crowded. Ordered the Roti, Koh Soh, and Braised Duck Noodles. The roti was just okay, but both the braised duck and Koh Soh were legit and since your going to a noodle shop for noodles it's what I expected. Yummmmm! I was told by many of my friends about how they didn't like Fat Mao...but I've been twice now and I personally really like it! The flavors reminded me a lot of my Thai aunties, and made me miss their cooking. I don't know why, but it's hard to find authentic Thai food in Vancouver - even if it is, I still find that they'll adjust the flavors/dishes to the Western palate. At Fat Mao, you won't really find the typical dishes you see around town. We tried the wing bean salad, hot and sour pork noodles and the braised duck noodles...and all were delicious! We didn't realize that Ramen Butcher doesn't open on Mondays so we decided to walk around and see what else was in the neighbourhood. Just right next door we saw this cute/hipster place and the name was eye catching. The store front was glass so you could see into the kitchen and watch them cook. The menu looked attracting when ordering but when the food arrived...it was disappointing in my opinion. My noodles were soggy at some point and at the bottom of my bowl than my noodles were undercooked and clumping together. My thai iced tea was watered down by the crushed ball that was on top. I give them stars for the creativity of the place and nice staff. BUT...the food is why they lost 2 stars. I ordered the Braised Duck Noodles. The Duck falls right off the bone and the noodles were the perfect compliment to the meal. It was very tasteful and the right amount of flavor. We heard about this restaurant on Big food bucket list so we decided to try it. I had the special of the day and my partner had the beef laksa. Both soups packed a punch in flavour and spice. You are greeted by two Chefs - both situated at the door, super cool kitchen and for some reason I really liked the fact that the kitchen is right at the entrance! Made me feel like I was walking into an old chinese joint. Ordered the Century Egg with Tofu - 3.5 stars - the flakes on top had a smoked salmon taste, was really good but i think there were too much on it, so it took away from the taste of the century egg. Tofu was soft but firm - good texture. Also had the Roti to start - 2 stars. It was aiight...flavor was too rich in the curry sauce Side of XO sauce - 1star. Any way, not much to say about this so movin' on. We ordered two noodle soup dishes.. Beef Laksa - 1.5* - way too thick and heavy and kinda a bit flavourless - the beef was juicy and soo tender and was the star of the dish! Hot and Sour Pork with sheet noodles - 3 stars. I enjoyed it , had bold, bold flavours however, was a bit too bold that each of the flavor over powered one another. If you're going to order the dish - order it with sheet noodles vs vermicelli. My rating is 3.5, but I rounded it up. Not bad, I came here with no expectations and have always wanted to try this place because I come by this area often. I love their decor especially with old Chinese Mangas laying around on the tables. It was directly right on my target of stuff I want for decor, that is for sure ;) I love their duck, crystal noodle bowl. The duck is extremely fatty though, and you can really taste it, since they left the skin on it, and the crystal noodle is something I have been trying to find for a long time. By the end, I was extremely full and it was delicious. Maybe I wanted more of it, but it really is extremely rich flavour that I think I can only have 1 bowl of it and that's it. I love the amount of their sauces they offer to the patrons, it was unique, and it will change the flavour of the bowl of ramen countless times. I would come back maybe sometime soon? But I really don't know because the place really didn't stand out except for the noodles. I do want to try other stuff on the menu, but I will think about it. I'm so overwhelmed with joy because I haven't had these noodles since I last left my home in Chiang Mai 8 years ago. The aroma from the front door immediately got me, it smells JUST like the real thing back on the streets of Chiang Mai and to my pleasing it tasted even better than expected! Came here an hour before closing, some parties inside, no wait line, our party of 6 got seated fast. The menu was full of soups and dishes you honestly can't get at any typical Thai restaurant, and that's the best part. Me and half our party got the Chiang Mai Koh Soi and finished it to the last drop of soup, it's THAT good. The others in my group got the duck soup noodle dish that honestly was just as good and flavorful. Service was great, he was prompt and even recommended sauces to go with each dish. We wondered here after trying, unsuccessfully, to eat at Bodega on the Main. The place was busy and said that they might have a space for the 5 of us in 15 minutes. It was closer to 30 minutes before they actually had space. They only had 2 curry noodles left and 1 Dan Dan noodle left so I snapped up their Dan Dan Noodles ($9). The noodle itself was actually pretty good, it was the broth and the sauce that I had a problem with. The broth was too greasy and bland. I had to add several spoons of chilli sauce to give it a little bit of kick. It definitely didn't taste authentic. The place itself was interesting, with them providing real manga on each table. Unfortunately, all the manga is Chinese-translated. I know I'm in Chinatown but still, not even one English-translated manga? The good thing is that the service is fast and friendly. Will I go here again? Probably not. If I found myself in the neighbourhood, I would probably just order take-out from Phnom Penh across the street. read more

On a Saturday afternoon my friend D.T. and I tried yet again to get into Phenom Penh for lunch. We got there around 2 pm and wouldn't you know it but this place was busy yet again. The line up was out the door, so we gave up and looked for another restaurant in the area. The last time we faced this situation we ended up at The Butcher. This time we ended up trying Fat Mao. Fat is a small noodle house. It's actually tiny. It probably seats like 20 people in total. The food is so so... I prefer the Butcher over this place. I had a Taiwanese Beef noodle. It was ok tasting. The noodles are hand made and they were pretty good, but the soup was a bit salty for my taste. Of the 3 noodle type restaurants in the area I would go with P. Penh, The Butcher and Fat Mao is number 3. Marketing strategy wise I think Fat Mao will have to lower their prices if they want to survive in this market. The restaurant was pretty empty when we got there, and there were line ups out the door for both P Penh and The Butcher. Fat Mao has to do something to attract customers. Lowering the price would be a viable alternative. Would I come back to Fat Mao? I would have to answer no. Was wandering around Chinatown with a friend. Totally impromptu drop-in. Tight busy place even past 7pm on a Friday, so like us you might be asked to share the seven-seat communal table with another small party. This is a NOODLE place. It's not a Chinese place. It's not a Singaporean place. It's not even a ramen place. You get noodles in tasty soup. Don't go here for ethnic or authentic or whatever. Go for noodles in tasty soup, and filling portions for a decent price. Roti ($5.99) -Decent curry sauce but could really use some spiciness/heat to it. OK roti prata. -$6 for this measly amount? Pass. Get your roti from Amay's House instead where you'll get a big piece about four times as much roti than what's on this plate. The curry there is also better -- tastier and richer. Koh Soi Chicken Curry Noodle ($14.99) braised chicken thigh, turmeric curry, served with wonton noodles and crispy noodles -It says "curry" but there's nothing spicy/hot here. In fact, the soup is really quite sweet. And yeah, it's rich. -Soup is very delicious! I'd order it at a few bucks less and minus the fancy dressing-up. You'll wanna drink it all except you might be too full to do it, especially if you had ordered extra noodles or a drink. -You don't get a choice of noodle here. In some noodle orders you get to choose what you want or from a couple of options. -Crispy noodle is more fun than actually tasty. -Lime slice didn't seem to do anything for me. Might want to save it as a refreshing end to your meal, especially if you're finding the curry overly rich. -Totally unnecessary chunk of fall-off-the-bone tender chicken. On it's own its so un-special as to be on the bland side. Eat it with the curry and you taste the curry because it's that flavourful, rich, and delicious. Delicious noodles! We had the mushroom and coconut with flat rice noodles, duck with regular noodles and roti. Very flavorful and the broth is rich. The roti we could have done without, it's not worth the price. The parking is street parking only in chinatown so don't leave valuables in your car...you'll understand why when you park. Would I line up for a bowl of noodles? No. But it is a good place to try if you're craving noodles. We went slightly off peak hours so we got a table right away and service was good. The broth for the laksa was delicious, spicy, coconutty, and just extremely flavorful. The ceviche was served with cassava chips and very cool and refreshing. The portions were really decent as well especially the Alexa. So filling! We were both full from just the ceviche which was an appetizer and the laksa which was the main. So when this place first opened, my wife and I were very excited to try this joint. We waited a few weeks for the dust to settle and the reviews started to pile up. This place ended up getting pretty horrid reviews so we never went. This past weekend, we were in the area and decided to try it. Going in, there were a few patrons, nothing too crazy. I liked the ambiance, as it was very oriental. It had the authentic look of the kitchen behind the glass and the lettering on everything was quite neat. Starting off, the waiter was quite nice and he was very attentive to our needs. So when it came to the service, we were quite pleased. We ended up ordering the khao soi and the roti. We didn't want to order too much because we wanted to eat at other places after! :) The first dish that came out was the roti. Let me say that this was an absolute RIP OFF. For 4 small pieces of roti, it was 5.99. Not only that but it wasn't even crispy and fully cooked inside. I am not sure what the cook/chef was thinking when he was making this. This started off the meal on a bad note. The Khao Soi came shortly after in a big bowl. This dish wasn't that bad, but recently just coming back from Thailand, I expected better. I had better Khao Soi at Ma Now Thai Kitchen in Coquitlam. Overall, I will never come back here. It is actually surprising that this place is somehow connected to Maenam (which we loved), Longtail Kitchen (which we also love). I don't want to be too negative but I felt my money was wasted here. Not sure why all the low ratings for Fat Mao -- I am sure there must be reason for it, or maybe, just maybe, that Vancouver residents are spoiled by the high quality and great variety of foods here (in a good way, and jealously). The first impression right at the moment walking into the shop was the aroma from the duck broth (which I found out later from the waitress). I think it's mainly 5-spicy plus extra bay leaves. I ordered a duck noodle, with wide steamed rice noodles. The broth is delicious, if not better than its aroma. The duck tight quarter, my god, THAT tight quarter(!) is so full of flavors, it's slowly cooked and with all the good spicy juices in it, lessen the smell of raw duck meat and excessive fats from typical duck skins (think traditional roasted ducks). IMO, it could get even better if it was cooked for less time to reserve the elasticity of meat, to find the fine balance. I truly enjoyed every single drop of the noodle soup. The noodle was only okay, it could be better. On any sunny afternoon, I would really enjoy sitting by the sun-filled window and enjoy their duck noodle. read more

The soup was a bit too sweet for me but maybe that's just because I prefer spicy taste (they provide some chili oil and chili flakes to spice it up to my taste!). I've walked by this place quite a few times and finally had the chance to try it. There were only a few small tables filled up when we got there. So we got a table for 5 pretty fast further back in the restaurant. The menu isn't very large and they do have some specials written up on the chalkboard. I shared the curry roti with my friend and it was pretty good. However, I think it was a bit small for the price. They gave plenty of sauce, but not enough roti. For my main, I ordered their braised duck noodles with the Shanghai wide noodle and the Taiwan pineapple beer. The beer is very light, with a refreshing pineapple taste. The noodles came in a cute cat bowl. I liked the flavour of the soup as it wasn't too salty. The noodles had a nice chew to it and the duck was tender. Overall, it was a solid noodle soup and I would come back for it. Service was pretty good too. They came to check up on us and filled up our water every so often. read more

Tried their duck leg with soup and rice rolls. I love the texture of the rice rolls. I've never quite had anything like this in Canada; just in Malaysia. They have a similar kind of noodle in Malaysia but surprised and happy to see them almost replicate it here. A welcomed addition. Duck was tender. Added the vinegary hot sauce (one out of the four they provide for you to complement your dish) to my soup and it was the perfect one to add in my opinion. Duck soup was a little bit too sweet for me as I tend to prefer my main dishes savoury. If they could turn down the sweetness, I would definitely go back. For now, I'm impartial. With all the the mixed reviews I have put off trying out Fat Mao. I ended up going last night about an hour before closing with a friend. The restaurant is small and narrow with a laid back vibe and you can see the entire kitchen where they prepare the noodles. The menu is very small with a selection of noodles and sides and some Asian drinks. Apple sidra! I got the curry noodles and my friend got the Laksa. The noodles themselves were alright. My bowl came with two big pieces of chicken and a decent amount of noodles with crispy pieces that added a nice crunch. The soup itself was a little thick but had a good flavour but maybe a little strong. I would've preferred more both to go along with every bite of noodle I had. The bowl of noodles was about $11. The service was good, quick and friendly. They had some nice touches like brining the bill in a manga comic. Weirdly enough the restaurant is a dead zone for reception but they had wifi available which was nice. Would I come back? Not at this point. Had their spicy beef noodle soup and it was excellent! Service was fast and friendly and the soup was very flavorful, but not overly salty.
