I've been here a few times now and I think this place is pretty good. It's a pretty small place so depending on when you come you might have to wait. It is one of Angus An's restaurants who also owns Maenam which is one of my favorite Thai restaurants. The menu is quite small and a bit limited but the items are all very good. So glad the downtown location is open. Same great food, easier to walk to. Staff is so friendly, the shop is bright and clean. The Braised Beef noodle is killer, lots of beef in that rich broth. Yum. The Chicken Khao Soy was wonderful, similar to a Laksa. The piece of chicken was huge, and on the bone, so a little difficult to eat - that's a very small complaint. LOL. With the rainy days ahead in the fall it's time to start that rainy day comfort food list! And be sure to add Fat Mao to the list! They have a nice variety of noodle soup that is focused on the best of Thai and Chinese flavours. We ordered the Braised Duck Noodles + Khao Soi, Chiang Mai Curry Noodles + Roti with Curry. Both noodle soups were outstanding and each included a whole braised duck/chicken leg. The meat from the duck/chicken leg is super tender and full of flavour. And the best part is you can also choose your type of noodles too! They have options from wonton noodle, Shanghai wide noodle, rice noodle, clear rice sheet noodle and vermicelli - quite a selection. Service was very friendly and they even noticed I was in white and eating the khao soi I and offered me a bib to prevent any unwanted splash and stain. Love love love... It's another restaurant of Chef Angus An. I first heard of An after visiting Maenam years ago, which I fell in love with. This modern noodle bar did not disappoint. I was on a monthly "foodie date' with Juice. We both wanted to get some hearty bowls and decided on this is a perfect choice. Chinatown is only a five-minute drive from both of our homes. Best last minute decision ever! Juice has been to Thailand and lived off Koh Soi so she was excited to see it on the menu. It was served with wonton flat noodles & crispy noodles. I tasted it too, to die for! I can speak better to my order, I got Hot n Sour Pork with wonton flat noodles. It was phenomenal, after my first taste I literally swore lol. It was that good. Explosion of warm, comforting flavors. Think of Tom yum inspired soup, plus I added chili oil. Such great condiments on the table. Big chunks of juicy tender pork. I will return for more dishes!! This is one of the reasons why I decided to come to Vancouver. My celebrity crush had posted a photo on IG and since I'm a sucker, I fell for it. I hadn't looked at the menu, hadn't done any usual research. 2.5 hours later, I found myself sitting in the noodle shop. I hadn't known what to expect, I wasn't thinking a Thai noodle place, that's for sure. I got the chicken noodle (long name) with deep fried noodles on top, thick egg noodle underneath, bean sprouts, all the yummy herbs you'd find in Thai soups and a leg of chicken. The meat literally fell off the bone. It was like Vietnamese curry but a little thicker and really flavorful. My mom got an herbal duck noodle and it was really soy-y but good. Hers came with shanghai noodles (from servers recommendation) but she said thinks she would have liked the wonton skins more. It also came with a duck leg that also fell off the bone! They sure know how to slow cook poultry real well. I'm giving 3 stars because of service. The guy making the bowls and that brought them out were great but the main waiter/host had a little bit of a superiority about him and when I was cashing out he made a comment that I didn't appreciate. It's a small place so best to come on off times if you don't like waiting. I like that you can see the open concept kitchen. No funny business here. Emoji, button, oyster and shiitake I think?? . Almost vegan friendly aside From the fish sauce. My goto! - sweet and sour pork with rice sheets - my first dish here and loved it!! Perfect balance. Be careful of the splatter so lean in and steam your face - duck leg in beef soup - good size leg portion. And the layers of flavour in the soup is amazing - roti - yum! But I'm always too full to order this each time I highly recommend getting the rice sheets if you've never tried. I haven't seen it offered anywhere else and it's a lot of fun to eat! (And tests your chopsticks skills!) I want to try the lettuce wraps but I keep going back to my coconut soup. I was surprised with how much peanuts were loaded on but it was good. The wide noodles had a good chewy texture to it. I didn't find that much meat in the bowl though probably because the pork is mostly ground pork. The roti was not bad. Got a recommendation for this place by the awesome owner of Massey Books. It's just a few steps off of main, and the inside is pretty hip. They got slam dunk manga on the tables and they bring you bills within the books, so you know they're hip. The server was really nice and my food was brought asap, in less than 5 minutes. The menu doesn't have much variety but it all looked really good making it touch to choose. I ordered the Braised Duck Noodles with a Soy Egg ($18) which was a noodle bowl with some of the tastiest broth and chewiest (tastiest) noodles I've ever had. The dish came with a side of 4 spice flavorings, but I didn't really load up on any of them after I had tried each once. Reminder, those noodles were tasty. The duck was also really good too. It was a decently sized leg, but my main complaint about the dish would be id hope for a bit more meat for the price I paid! I left feeling a tad bit hungry. Mind you the food I had just eaten was damn delicious. This is a place I'd recommend to anyone in Chinatown. Service and food here both deserve a thumbs up! Upon entering, we were seated immediately by one waitress. And a second waitress came over to explain the 4 different sauces they had and recommended certain ones to go with our soup of choice. The menu is simple with 5 soup options. Stumbled here one day when the neighborhood Phnom Penh Restaurant was closed. A surprising find if I do say so myself. I tried the Braised Duck Noodles. The duck was hearty, large and fall off the bone soft. Portion size of noodles was on the smaller end but this is fine for me since I don't usually want that Much anyway. Also on the menu was Century Egg with House Tofu. This is a cold tofu dish and there's century egg. I'm not a big fan of century egg but was told this doesn't taste as salty and pungent as the ones that are usually in congee. Tofu tasted like normal soft tofu with sauce. It's the closest we've tried to what we had in Chiang Mai...but it's missing the peanuts! The chicken is tender. The crispy noodles are fun and the flat noodles really bring up the tasty broth for each bite. My SO really enjoyed the laksa and the meat was so tender, it just fell apart. It's nice to see a clean and organized kitchen. The guy in charge of the noodles runs a bunch of timers to make sure all the noodles are cooked consistently. I've had SPLENDID noodle soups at Fat Mao a couple of times pre-COVID ... so we were really looking forward to last night's take out. Each of our soups cost $21 and neither were good. The broth was thin and too salty, the ingredients included yucchy-tasting mystery organ meats and the horrible indigestion we both had afterward kept us awake. I was afraid there might not be enough food for me (I eat more than my husband) but the bowl had plenty for me. I also liked the pickled mustard greens; that made the authentic touch for me. The chicken leg was cooked tender so it was very easy to pick the meat off without using my fingers. Totally exceeded our expectations as we were not sure what to expect. We were looking for a place to have a quick lunch and decided to try Fat Mao Noodles. When we were seated and I looked at the menu I almost regretted our choice as it was a bit limited for a pescatarian especially when the one vegan soup was discontinued. Our server was also the manager and a former chef and was extremely helpful. He informed us the Khai soi chicken curry noodles could be done with a vegan broth and I also had the option of the Tom Yum which was pescatarian. I took our server's recommendation for something bright and refreshing on a warm day and went with the Tom yum. We also tried the wing bean salad for an appetizer. The flavours in the wing bean salad were so unexpected and appetizing, I could have had a second order! I also wasn't expecting the uniqueness of the Tom yum noodles, so flavourful in a unique light, spicy and citrusy broth. There are quite a few elements tied into the design - a mix of Asian and Western style. I asked for recommendations and the server told me that most people really love their duck noodle. It could've used more broth and actual noodles, the crispy wonton toppers added too much extra fluff and not enough substance. Hot and Sour Pork Noodles ($11) - 4/5 Definitely sour! (not so much hot). Loved all the different preparations of the pork, especially the minced pork (it's similar to the Cantonese-style steamed ground pork "cake"). We tried a couple of their sour cocktails and felt completely ripped off by the size and taste (tasted like Pine Sol). Service was definitely slow, inattentive and very disappointing... to the point where my friend said she'll never come back again because of it. I'm coming back to try their Beef Laksa since they were sold out of it that night. But I agree, please improve the level of service so that it matches the quality of the food!
