Is there a negative star rating? As a long term customer, I receive an email saying that I could get a milk tea for only $1. I arrive at the location on Alpha Rd around approximately 7pm to find a hand written sign stating that after 4pm they would be charging regular price on the advertised milk tea that was promised to be $1 in advertisement sent as an email blast to who knows how many customers. 1) A hand written note on the door? How tacky can you get? Could you at least use a word processing program and type it so that it looks like you give a damn? Oh wait, you don't because you went against the special that was sent via email blast. Tacky tacky tacky. 2) You go against your word to the customer and charge full price after you offered a product to be on special for the entire day. Why? Are you the milk tea type? Because I am! Fat straws has a classic milk tea that I loveeeeeeee! The thing about fat straws is that the are not stingy. If you go to any other tapioca place, they're are stingy. I always ask for my milk tea without ice and they fill your whole cup up! If you go to any other place, they don't do that! How awesome is that? Their new mochi doughnuts are SOOOOOO good. I am so glad I got to try a sample the other day. At first, I didn't care to try it but the staff member insisted and boy am I glad she insisted!! These little doughnuts were not extremely sweet and I love the slightly chewy texture of it. I asked for bubbles on the side so I could let my nephew um-num on them and they said they have to charge for the minimum cheapest drink amount?? What's up with that? This has always been my go to place for bubble tea when in the Addison area. The staff is friendly, the store clean, and the products are always delicious. They also have a lounge area inside with comfortable sitting should you chose to chill there. They have two other locations in Dallas and Plano. You can always add tapioca bubbles and/or jellies to any of their menu items. The Bubbles and Jellie are extra $0.40 per scoop, but worth it! I normally get the large $4.60 Pina Colada smoothie with bubbles but always try the summer specials they run like the Watermelon Cooler. Wife loves the large $3.89 Lychee flavored Slushy with bubbles...thats pretty much what she gets for the many times we've come here. They offer daily brews, a wide variety of artisan teas, flavored iced tea, flavored smoothies, flavored slush, variety of coffee, frappes, and shakes. The tea selection and menu pricing is fair but unfortunately, the owners have taken nearly all of the Asian inspiration, culture, and historical information away from the essence of the product. Came in here today to get a smoothie after my workout. *I know. Don't judge me*. Getting in, the guy at the desk offered me a sample of the tea of the day. I don't remember what it was but I was set on getting a smoothie anyway. The cashier was very pleasant and mentioned that he was there to answer any questions that I had. I have a hard time with decisions so he told me what the favorite smoothies are. I opted for the peach mango smoothie with no tapioca. I've never been a fan of tapioca or chewy stuff in my drink so I opted out of the jellies that he suggested as an alternative. The peach mango was amazing!!!! It has been a very long time since my initial review in 2016! In my first review, I had not discovered the brewed teas yet. After I started ordering those, Fat Straws became my go-to boba place-- and they kept my (daily) business for 4 years! The brewed teas were delicious and unique compared to all other boba places, and I loved their pumpkin spice milk tea in fall. The excellent customer service never faltered. If I had updated my review a couple years ago, my rating would have been 4.5 stars. However....in September 2021, my rating is 2 stars. The reason: Price-gouging. Fat Straws drink prices rose steadily over the years; I think the price of the drinks I usually purchased increased 25% since 2016. That was already questionable....however, the tapioca costs were the last straw. Using the boba shortage as an excuse, Fat Straws increased the cost of tapioca by $0.25 AND decreased the amount you get by half! In other words, every customer pays 50% more money for 50% less boba. What the heck, Fat Straws. I would be more sympathetic if the boba shortage were that significant. I know the pandemic changed many things. However, many of their competitors were able to maintain prices and boba servings. Observing that makes me question whether Fat Straws was really impacted by the boba shortage to such an extent. Personally, I do not believe it. I have already taken most of my business elsewhere. I occasionally still come to the store to support the great staff who work behind the counter. If they were not there, I would never come back. read more

I came here on a late weekend really looking forward to try their mochi donuts. To my dismay they ran out! So I ordered their hibiscus tea and watermelon cooler. Both drink were underwhelming and nothing great about it. It tasted ok but I dont think i would be returning for their drinks unless its my last resort. Ill try again for the donuts. read more

I've never had mochi donuts until recently! If you are looking to be a little adventurous then this is the place for you! You walk in and everything feels clean and employees are wearing their gloves/masks with good labels for social distancing. The mochi donuts are made fresh and their taste reflect it! I was so surprised that they're not overly sweet like regular donuts. I got to try a few and my favorites are definitely black sesame and matcha donuts! The frosting are not super sweet and truly taste like their respective flavors!! I love them and can't wait to return! Not a big fan of the passion fruit one though - it was tart and just not what I expected. Almost tasted like a lemon donut. I also got milk tea and although they tasted okay (you get to titrate level of sweetness), I'd recommend getting it elsewhere unless you have a huge craving. Fat straws is my ultimate go to boba place. I wish I lived closer to one, but it's always a great treat when I do make it out to one. Their boba is always the perfect consistency. I've had my fair share of bubble tea, so I have a pretty good idea what elements make the perfect cup. Not familiar with this establishment, I figured you can't really go wrong with the classic milk tea with bubbles, so I went with a regular cup. To be accurate, my rating is a 3.5 star. I didn't think the milk tea tasted authentic at all. There was barely any tea flavor. There were, however, lots of milk and sugar. I must say that the boba, or bubbles, were a good texture, but the drink in its entirety was lacking authenticity and the aroma I look for in a good cup of milk tea. I'd return if I was around again but likely to sample something a bit more fruity instead of tea. My other half bought some fruity drink with boba and it was much better than my milk tea, so I'd advise going for those selections instead. Other than that, the space is cozy and cute with several tables and a lounging area. Perfect stop on a hot summer day. Nothing to complain about the service either. read more

I ordered a Vietnamese frappe: my favorite and ultimately one of the best drinks there and the first thing I heard after I ordered it was "how do you make it?" OMG NO!!! new employees, new workers. They didn't know how to make it and it came out with such disappointment.. why me. Why always la me? Atleast the boba still taste so good. But I don't think I'm coming back again. Fat Straws was (continues to be, actually) an integral part of my DFW upbringing - not even kidding. It has been a consistent part of most celebrations whether it was being done with an exam or a bigger milestone. The drinks are consistently amazing and I've loved anything/everything I've tried over the last decade and longer, between this location and the one in Plano! Their teas are always great as are their slushes! And the "Tea of the Day" has always been a plus. It was at this point when the Liquid Jade tea was "Tea of the Day" and I fell in love with it! With a taste of rose, it's excellent with honey instead of sugar. It has been my go-to for the last few years! It takes them about 2 minutes to steep it since it's not a regular tea people ask for. Most teas they have though -- you can expect to be heading out with them in less than a few minutes! They're very, very fast here. Boba is also consistently great here! I didn't think Fat Straws could top itself until I was back and visiting Texas after having moved away and saw they had Chamoyadas with spicy straws! They had 3 different flavors, the mango being the best and classic, and the spicy straw just added that additional kick! SO SO good. Im away from Dallas right now and was thinking of the drink which prompted me to remember I hadn't written a review for Fat Straws yet! Love this place and you should, too! I came here craving a sweet, milky caffeine pick me up before hitting the galleria. I got the Jasmine milk tea with stevia and no boba. My boyfriend got the taro milk tea. They both tasted so watered down, not milky at all. Kinda like how it would if it was full of ice and had been sitting out for a few hours. It was gross I had to toss mine after drinking half of it. We had the pleasure of trying three different drinks on our first visit. We even tried one seasonal shake, the peppermint shake. The other two drinks we had were Thai tea with boba and cookies and cream shake with boba. All were pretty good.. nothing fantastically different than other tea shops, but the menu is much more extensive than some I've been to. I like places with as many options as they have! The environment is cozy, and I would totally study here if I lived closer. They had it decorated so cute for Christmas with a full tree, stockings, and string lights. They had toys and games for my daughter to play with and stay busy, as well. We were pleased that the boba is perfect texture, something I wish I could say for all tea places. Sadly, we have found so many that give you tough pearls! The price irritated my husband a bit, as they charged about $2 more than menu price for the cookies and cream and the peppermint flavors. I ordered a vietnamese coffee regular with bubbles. Vietnamese coffee base tasted like vietnamese coffee. The bubble was cooked enough to not have the semi tapioca flour texture that is sad. Drink 5/5 As for whether this is a good place to study o say 3/5. There are a couple of tables and outlets. Blech! I feel sorry for those of you who think that this is as good as pearl tea gets. Admittedly, I was spoiled in California, getting my pearl tea from a place that imported all its ingredients directly from Taiwan, but STILL.... Pearls: cooked well, good consistency, but flavorless! Pearls should be soaked in honey for at least 2 hours before being served. These obviously hadn't been soaked at all. Furthermore, the portion was skimpy. I ran out of pearls way before I ran out of tea. Tea: I had the peach green tea, which had a good flavor but was terribly watered-down. The abundance of ice also meant that by the time I got to the bottom of the cup, I was drinking colored water. A good pearl tea place (sigh...) will give you strong tea to start with, then just enough ice (read: very little) so that it's cold but not watery by the time you reach the bottom. Flavor selection: terrible, although they get points for offering taro milk tea. Seriously, though, where's hazelnut? lychee? banana? the list goes on.... Plus, you can only get certain flavors hot, certain flavors cold, and certain flavors in smoothies. What?!? Price: almost $4 for the large, pretty standard for boba prices, but in the case of Fat Straws, NOT WORTH IT. And thus, my quest to find truly good boba in Dallas continues. {sigh} read more

Balls. Black Balls. Ok ok, they're called bubbles, but balls just sounds funnier. This place is one of my favorite boba joints in Dallas. They have a large variety of drinks, different garnishes (tapioca balls, jellies, etc), and its consistently good. The staff is always friendly and the drinks come out pretty fast (sometimes you may have to wait a little, the lines can go out the door on the weekends). I've been to both this location and the one in Plano off Park. I prefer this one more than the Plano location for only one reason- driving in Plano is a deathtrap. Outside of the fear of getting hit by a teenage driver talking on their cell phone, the Plano location is completely suitable and the drinks are just as tasty. The Alpha location is larger than the Plano location and has more parking, which is a plus as well. read more

Ok, so I HAD to find tapioca for us in Dallas for our conference. We find it, and it seems like a pretty ok place. There isn't really much of a selection (at least not the kind I am accustomed to). I ordered the Vietnamese Coffee Frappe with tapioca, and it was pretty good, not great (it was slightly watered down after blending it). I HAVE to say I wanted to give them 4 starts but the short, little punk guy there was rude and told me I was not allowed to snap any pictures of the place!! WTF?!?!? Are you serious?!?! I got my one shot anyway (with him in it so I cropped his butt out), but you are seriously rude, and I nearly dropped my rating to a 2 because of his punk-self. If and when I have my own place, by all means please take pics and promote my business!! When I come back to Dallas, I will not stop here unfortunately. I've had some history with bubble tea. My ex-girlfriend, who was Asian, always called it "bulba tea." I don't speak Chinese... I thought she was right. Turns out the mysterious goo she used to prod me to drink was called boba tea, a.k.a. bubble tea. And you don't have to be in Los Angeles to get it. I stopped in Fat Straws with my sister and her friend. By the time they deciphered the menu, a line of Fat Straw fans had gathered behind us. The staff here was very friendly and helpful for those who had no idea why they would put rocks in the bottom of their drinks. I ordered a chilled green tea with bulb- um... bubbles. In all of three minutes, my drink was waiting for me on the counter. Upon attempting to take a picture with my iPhone, the dude behind the counter freaked out. Apparently he was... how-you-say.... "camera shy?" Okay. Let's get to the quality. I've had better. The stuff I had at the Asian spot in LA was much tastier. That being said, this is Texas. The green tea was a little watered down, but still flavorful. The most disappointing thing was the pearls. Pretty flavorless. Kind of like bland tapioca. So this place takes a hit on flavor. But they gain points on friendliness and helpfulness. And the place is really clean and chic. Yes, I said chic. Bamboo sprouts and oversized chairs. I like it. I'd definitely go back.
