Balls. Black Balls. Ok ok, they're called bubbles, but balls just sounds funnier. This place is one of my favorite boba joints in Dallas. They have a large variety of drinks, different garnishes (tapioca balls, jellies, etc), and its consistently good. The staff is always friendly and the drinks come out pretty fast (sometimes you may have to wait a little, the lines can go out the door on the weekends). I've been to both this location and the one in Plano off Park. I prefer this one more than the Plano location for only one reason- driving in Plano is a deathtrap. Outside of the fear of getting hit by a teenage driver talking on their cell phone, the Plano location is completely suitable and the drinks are just as tasty. The Alpha location is larger than the Plano location and has more parking, which is a plus as well. read more

Ok, so I HAD to find tapioca for us in Dallas for our conference. We find it, and it seems like a pretty ok place. There isn't really much of a selection (at least not the kind I am accustomed to). I ordered the Vietnamese Coffee Frappe with tapioca, and it was pretty good, not great (it was slightly watered down after blending it). I HAVE to say I wanted to give them 4 starts but the short, little punk guy there was rude and told me I was not allowed to snap any pictures of the place!! WTF?!?!? Are you serious?!?! I got my one shot anyway (with him in it so I cropped his butt out), but you are seriously rude, and I nearly dropped my rating to a 2 because of his punk-self. If and when I have my own place, by all means please take pics and promote my business!! When I come back to Dallas, I will not stop here unfortunately. I've had some history with bubble tea. My ex-girlfriend, who was Asian, always called it "bulba tea." I don't speak Chinese... I thought she was right. Turns out the mysterious goo she used to prod me to drink was called boba tea, a.k.a. bubble tea. And you don't have to be in Los Angeles to get it. I stopped in Fat Straws with my sister and her friend. By the time they deciphered the menu, a line of Fat Straw fans had gathered behind us. The staff here was very friendly and helpful for those who had no idea why they would put rocks in the bottom of their drinks. I ordered a chilled green tea with bulb- um... bubbles. In all of three minutes, my drink was waiting for me on the counter. Upon attempting to take a picture with my iPhone, the dude behind the counter freaked out. Apparently he was... how-you-say.... "camera shy?" Okay. Let's get to the quality. I've had better. The stuff I had at the Asian spot in LA was much tastier. That being said, this is Texas. The green tea was a little watered down, but still flavorful. The most disappointing thing was the pearls. Pretty flavorless. Kind of like bland tapioca. So this place takes a hit on flavor. But they gain points on friendliness and helpfulness. And the place is really clean and chic. Yes, I said chic. Bamboo sprouts and oversized chairs. I like it. I'd definitely go back. I'm a HUGE fan of Bubble Tea, but really didn't know where to find it in Dallas (yes, there's always Google...lol), but was visiting someone at the Venture X space near this location several months ago and immediately checked it out. So glad I did! I've been here numerous times since, always impressed with the selection, quality, and price as well as friendliness of the staff and cleanliness of the space. The tea selection and menu pricing is fair but unfortunately, the owners have taken nearly all of the Asian inspiration, culture, and historical information away from the essence of the product. If there's one thing I know it's that nothing refreshes your palate like a Boba tea on a hot day! Whenever I have any reason it to go north of 635 I make sure to make a stop at Fat Straws. They have several of the traditional flavors to choose from as well as some nontraditional treats as well. I have been to Fat Straws a few times because the staff is always friendly. The most recent time I went, I was greeted by a very effervescent girl behind the counter. When ordering, she asked in details if I wanted regular or large, iced or hot, bubbles or not, and cream or none. It only took a few minutes to have my order fulfilled so it's a place to go if you're in a rush and need to quench your bubble tea buds. I've tried a few different slushies, smoothies, and teas. My favorite is the iced white coconut crème tea with a drizzle of honey. Not too sweet and quite refreshing. They also have a neat bookshelf with games, puzzles, and books. The policy is to leave something behind if you are to take something. Cool concept! If you are ever in the Dallas/Addison area, the location off Alpha is amiable and fun. Many moons ago I used to go to the location in Plano; now, while visiting town after 5 years away, a friend brought me to this location. They have a very wide selection of drinks; we both went with the taro slush with lots of bubbles. It erred strongly on the sweet side; any more and it would have been too much for me. One of my favorite shops in Dallas! Easy access from the tollway, great variety in the menu with helpful staff that will mix and match if you request. They are SO fast also! Can be in and out of the store with multiple drinks in under 5 minutes, even if they're busy (which they always are---definitely a good sign!) I've had the smoothies, iced teas and shakes, they're all delicious. Boba was slightly overcooked one time, but otherwise, it's been consistent and tasty. Taro smoothie is my current favorite along with white peach tea (for a refreshing drink on days when you don't want to feel guilty with drinking boba). With the effects of COVID-19, I wanted to support our local businesses that I have never visited before. I appreciated their efforts with making sure everyone was safe and offering curbside pick up. However, they shouldn't allow customers to put in advance orders if they cannot fulfill it. I tried to order ahead yesterday but they were sold out, so I made an attempt again today. I even ordered 3 hours ahead for pick up at a later time. Unfortunately, I was already on my way when one of their employees called to say they were cancelling my order because the manager from before did not notify them of the order and they could not fulfill my order. He must've also called from his personal cell phone because there was lack of professionalism when I returned the call. It's one thing to tell someone that they are unable to fulfill your order. It's another thing to blame it on someone else and not take responsibility even if it's not your own fault. It's also not that hard to offer a sincere apology. read more

First time at fat straws and a good experience. I had the white goji blossom tea with "bubbles". I'm not used to calling boba bubbles so I thought that was cute. I would like to commend them on the name as well, FAT STRAWS- that's great. One thing I noticed and that a lot of Asians will agree with is that it's definitely Americanized. Nothing wrong with that because it brings a very fresh and new feel to boba tea. The price was definitely reasonable, cheaper than most places in Austin, Houston, or Corpus Christi. Despite the crowd, the cashier was very helpful and was great at helping this first timer out. They changed the menu a bit as well, I believe the prices were raised a bit. Organic in every way, their Thai tea is NOT powdered. When you combine that with the ice cream and boba you get an orgasmic effect in your mouth and the perfect and ultimate combination of sweet flavors will take you to heaven.
