This place is adorable! I stumbled upon this place after yoga on a hot Arizona day (117 degrees out) and the owner was so sweet. She helped with many recommendations, answered all questions, and allowed me to sample until I made a decision. There were so many delicious options. Right now they have a Lavender vanilla flavor and she is HEAVENLY. I got the egg waffle and 2 flavors and it was good. The egg waffle comes out fresh and warm (you have to wait about 10 mins for it) so my only concern was that the waffle was melting my ice cream so I had to eat it quick. It also seemed like the waffle could've cooked a little longer cause the inside was very soft and mushy, but I wasnt sure if it was supposed to be like that. We wanted some dessert after dinner and this spot was within walking distance. It's on Roosevelt near a park and it's a nice area. I've been to the Scottsdale location though it's been years so it was nice to come back. My companion ordered a kids scoop of coffee ice cream, and I also got the coffee ice cream and vegan chocolate in a waffle bowl. The gal helping out at the register was friendly and helpful. The coffee ice cream was okay and the vegan chocolate had a coconut flavor, which the employee advised me about. It was fine but neither flavor really stood out to me. The waffle bowl was good, and they make homemade marshmallows which I love but I have to check what kind of gelatin they use so I didn't try it. Depressing location. The ladies clearly did not enjoy their job. There's no background music so it was just a blah environment, like it sucked your energy. The blase attitude from the two staff members didn't help either. It was not welcoming or anything. The roasted marshmallow topping is a nice touch though and I'm not even a big fan of marshmallows. Hands down our favorite ice cream shop in the valley! You absolutely have to try their cookie cup. All of the ice cream is made fresh with great ingredients, marshmallows and macaroons are made from scratch, and it's the best combo! Both locations are great and the ambiance is always inviting and comfortable. I am so surprised to see so many 4 star reviews. We drive from Ahwatukee to both of their locations all the time because it really is the best. I wanted explore some of the downtown options for ice cream and found this store tucked away on Roosevelt Street next to the Union @ Roosevelt apartment complex. There are several street parking spots and a private parking garage for Union @ Roosevelt. If you park in the garage for longer than ~15 minutes, then you do have to pay or get a validation card from the cashier, which they ran out of when I visited (the least to say, parking can be kind of a pain). Aside from that, the inside of the store is clean with limited indoor seating, and the staff member who helped me was friendly and helpful. I got the cookies and cream as well as the strawberry ice cream flavors. The cookies and cream flavor was not my favorite, as it tasted store-bought. The strawberry was really good, tasted strongly of strawberries, and didn't taste artificial at all. I just ordered a waffle cone with caramel pecan ice cream. The lady working either forgot or didn't hear me say I wanted a cone so it came in a cup. I knew they were getting ready to close so I just said it was fine and started to eat my ice cream. She then came back to hand me a cone while I was sitting down. While it was a nice gesture it was awkward because then I attempted to scoop the ice cream into my cone at the table and it made a mess. I was really looking forward to an ice cream shop in this location, but unfortunately the gelato was just OK, kind of on the icy side which is fine with me, but very overpriced at $8 for two small scoops that were more like a single. It would be almost half that at two other shops in walking distance. I thought the peanut butter had a good flavor but the banana needed more fruit flavor and there was no atmosphere inside and no outside tables. Also, about an hour after finishing I had a lingering sour milk taste. I noticed that after each scoop, the server would put the scoop in a little tub of water with other scoops. Over the course of a day, that room temperature water with bits of ice cream in it is going to go bad. She did wash her hands prior to serving me. Hopefully they will change their cleaning practices, drop the price to be competitive and get some outside tables, we need more local businesses in the neighborhood. read more

I wish I could say good things about this place, the location is amazing but everything else was pretty much a bust: I got a boba drink there and the boba was hard and chalky like they didnt even cook it? I have worked at boba shops and never thought it would be possible to have a boba drink this bad. The milk tea itself was okay but I couldnt even enjoy it with the uncooked boba. Aside from the beverage, the place was so unorganized and dirty. There were so many stains on the furniture and the light pillows sticky/ caked with what I would guess to be dried up ice cream. One of the workers was also stiring up dust with some kind of work being done on the floor behind the counter. It was so loud and chaotic. Service wise- the staff at the front didnt seem happy to see us enter. But they took our order without problems and answered questions well when we had them. After our experience, I now understand why there was no one else in the establishment on a friday night. I hope they can do better given the great location but I wont be giving them another chance read more

Overhyped. This is one of those places you see photos of all over Instagram and it looks delicious... but unfortunately it just doesn't come through. It's extremely overpriced for the portion size. No. But it was extremely sub par and I will not be returning. How many ways can you reinvent a classic treat like ice cream? Three former Go Daddy employees apparently believe they've got what it takes to make their own mark in the ever popular (and ever saturated) ice cream field. Owners Brian Ayala, Domenico Nolleti, and David Wesley are making a point of sourcing their stuff locally and often. With a bevy of ice cream flavors all made by Superstition Farms and a variety of macaron cookies all baked by Twelve Cakes Bakery, the ownership trio have now opened a pair of Fatty Daddy locations in the valley. The flagship remains in Scottsdale. Now Downtown Phoenix is getting in on the action. Downtown has its fair share of ice cream options, and some good ones (Melt, Novel, and even Mary Coyle are all in the vicinity). Does Fatty Daddy have what it takes to join the party? On a Saturday after dinner, I sought answers. Look for Fatty Daddy's Downtown location on the south side of Roosevelt Street and 2nd Avenue on the bottom floor of the Union apartment complex (next door to Genuwine). The space it occupies is small with very little seating (at least as of my visit this go around), so be prepared to get your treat to go. The front display case beckons your taste buds and the staff will happily allow you to taste test the flavors beforehand. In addition to ice cream, there's teas, coffees, and an assortment of pastries available as an alternative to their staples. I came here for what is apparently their claim to fame. The cookie cup. A scoop (or multiple scoops) of ice cream topped with one of their macarons and a toasted marshmallow. Alright then. I ordered a scoop of Nutella ice cream and a caramel macaron to go with the marshmallow on top. Total cost including tax? About $8. The ice cream itself was perfect. Cold, dense, and plenty of Nutella flavoring with each scoop and even a little aftertaste. The macaron and marshmallow were also delicious, though to be honest trying to operate this cup with a spoon was difficult. I ended up having to eat the cookie and marshmallow by hand as it's pretty impossible to cut up. Individually the ingredients are great and ideally getting a chunk of all three in one bite would be ideal. For me at least, it just wasn't workable. So I guess I'd dock a star mainly just because the logistics of the cookie cup are just too overly complicated. But as it pertains to the locally made ice cream and macarons, no complaints whatsoever. The location is great. The concept (for the most part) is sound. And I love the emphasis on locally made. Can Fatty Daddy's compete with the big ice cream names (not to mention the gelato and frozen yogurt spots) already occupying Downtown real estate? I'd say watch this space (and come get a scoop). read more
