I can't believe my eyes! A Fay Da in Forest Hills!?! And yes, it is run by 4-5 Chinese speaking ladies with fairly good English. They also speak Cantonese and Mandarin for those wishing to speak their native tongue. Fay Da serves an assortment of pastries, buns, bread, as well as coffee (Small is $1.00, Large is $1.50). Some of my favorites are the: - Curry Beef Bun ($1.50) - Perfectly flaky and crusty, with a nice subtle curry and onions. - Dry Pork Bun ($1.50) - A nice airy bread topped with dried pork bits. It has a nice salty taste for any of those wishing to wander beyond the typical Roast Pork Bun - Roast Pork Bun ($1.00) - But they also have your typical roast pork buns if you so prefer. - Hot Dog Bun ($1.00) - A full-sized hot dog surrounded by a pastry bread. Who doesn't love hot dogs? And countless other buns that I need not mention. And if you haven't had them before, it is definitely worth trying. They also have steamed buns (white buns) which are located by the cashier. My only gripe is that their bread does not rotate as quick as the Chinese bakeries in Flushing. Considering where they are, do they serve some very authentic buns as well as holding to Fay Da's recipe, but I would recommend coming in the AM as the pastries can get a bit stale by the evening hours. read more

Fay da is always a spot you can count on for reliable, consistent and decently priced eats. Been coming to the one in forest hills for a bit now and can honestly say this chain is no different, with an added bonus that the counter lady's speak impeccable English, always a plus due to my broken Chinese. Always order the curry beef and chicken "baos" as this is what they're known for. hot dog bao is interesting since it's a little different from the norm think burrito with lettuce and tomato. Tried their curry puffs after hearing about it one of the buzzfeed's worth episodes. Have been obsessed ever since. Not only are their curry puffs cheap but also really delicious and comforting. I believe they are only $1.75 each, very affordable. I've also discovered that they have numerous other great pastries. Their pineapple buns with custard or coconut filling is fantastic, so are some of their dim sum items. Highly recommended read more

This is a neighborhood go to for a quick, convenient and cheap breakfast or snack. It's a Chinese bakery with typical fair like savory buns, sweet pastries, elegant cakes, bubble tea and a plethora of other things. My go to things are the fish sandwiches, the pork bun and my favorite, the sweet topping kaya bun. It's a bun filled with sweet, creamy custard with a sweet caramelized topping on top. It's a very sweet, rich and velvety pasty, definitely worth a try! The lines are long in the mornings from everyone getting their bread and coffee before their commute to work but you won't have a problem getting a seat on week days. Weekend mornings though are especially busy, seats are all taken up and the line is long, but that's a good sign. I would give it 5 stars if it had a bigger seating area and if it wasn't cash only. While I do not generally have a sweet tooth, I do appreciate some baked goods every once in a long while. Fay Da has a huge variety of your traditional Chinese pastries and well as some Western pastries. Best of all the prices are totally fair and not hiked up considering the neighborhood and lack of competition. I'm not a fan of the creamy coconut drink here as it tasted like I was drinking straight heavy cream. The line moves decently quick. The employees are mostly middle-aged Chinese women who speaks mediocre English which is fine in my books because it is not like I really have to communicate much with them. This place has gone steadily downhill. It's dirty. Homeless hang out here making the atmosphere unsavory. They raised their prices but did nothing to improve the physical space, especially replacing noisy chairs. Baked goods all taste the same, no variety. Bought from here a few days ago. I bought the sesame balls, a sweet rice pastry and curry puff. I was excited to try them but when I bite into the sesame ball it had a strong rotten smell to it so i couldn't finish it. Same goes for the sweet rice pastry. The curry puff was okay. Where do I begin? Fay Da is amazing. From delicious pastries, bread and cake, to super cheap coffee, tea, bubble tea-you can't go wrong. There are literally so many options. And best of all? Everything is fresh! It's very convenient because it's right by the train station, there is seating (although it can be hard to find an empty table) and the people who work there are so sweet; I go there so often they greet me with a smile and chit chat with me a bit. A couple of my favorites are the sugar bread, strawberry bubble tea with the rainbow gelatin, and the hot buns that they keep by the register. Seriously guys, try the buns! The taro bubble tea slushee is better than any other bubble tea places I've gotten it from. The customer service is okay, it's always very rushed. first thing I noticed was the price difference from this location vs the one at elmhurst which is a quarter less for everything. I got 2 breads( 1 milk cream bun w/ coconut flakes, + 1 milk bun). It's $1.35 for each btw. I thought the milk cream bun was pretty similar to the one at the elmhurst location. However when I had the milk bun, boy was I disappointed. The thing I love most about Fay Da is that even if I only have 2 dollars in my pocket I can still get something tasty to eat. a welcome little slice of Flushing right in the heart of Forest Hills! I swung by here while out for a walk as I was interested in seeing what the hype was about - this place is almost always packed when I pass it. it's a welcome change from all the standard American/European bakeries in the neighborhood. Chinese pastries and cakes are the name of the game at this wonderful shop, and they are very cheap. as in, there are items which will run you less than a buck! there are a fair amount of Western pastries on hand here too (such as muffins and cheesecakes). the puff pastry with red bean paste was great. I'm a big fan of red bean paste, and this didn't disappoint. dough itself was flaky but not to the point of breaking apart, and the red bean paste...ME GUSTA. it was fairly hot outside, so I opted for what the menu lists as a cold "creamy milk shake with tapioca pearls". wow, it definitely hit the spot! looking at the menu, I kind of wish they had more flavors of bubble tea and shakes, but the offerings they do have are some pretty good flavors (mango and lychee are there...I am content). it's very bright and clean on the inside. the staff work fast, even though it was the Saturday afternoon crunch they were doing a great job handling the crowds. skip getting an overpriced, chemical-laden, mediocre "dessert" at Starbucks or Dunkin and hit this place up instead! read more

Man do I love this bakery! It's such a convenient spot on Forest Hills, located close to the doctors office and local shopping areas. I discovered the bakery by just walking around as usual on Forest Hills. I have to say when I peeked in, it looked super comfy and homely. When I entered I was greeted by an atmosphere full of life and great smelling pastries. I'm a bubble tea addict, and that was the first thing I had hit when I was here. I took a classic milk bubble tea, but they do have fruit flavored bubble teas which taste just as good. If you aren't a bubble tea kind of person there are good teas and coffees, which are equally as good. However, I do recommend the bubble teas as they are spectacular! Moving forward, I had a chocolate croissant. I'm a huge chocolate lover, so seeing this brightened my day. It was around two dollars which isn't too bad. They also carry pastries with ham which I do not eat, scallion flavored breads, and much more. They have a wide selection, being that I do not eat pork or beef I cannot say too much about the meat filled breads. However, they have good coconut breads that taste fine with a cup of good tea. If you are looking for a birthday cake and aren't too fond of Martha's you can try this place they have good cakes too. It's fresh as a plus, I know some people think Martha's is expensive and maybe this place can compensate. Either way, I would return and I look forward to my next visit. I come here occasionally for bakeries and coffee. The young counter lady is extremely rude. If u can stomach her talking down to you and throwing your purchases around, its decent. Caught her trying to make my iced coffee by pouring hot coffee over ice (iced coffee people know thats a huge no no) when i point it out she starts yelling at me in chinese. Ik not even chinese. Napoleon quite tasty and good, $1. Service is quick, pastries are very fresh. I would recommend to stop by often for the pastries, and skip the beverages. Quite busy when we were here. Basic decor, not fancy. 2008 and 2009 Zagat rated. The good: First and foremost price. This place offers simple, quick, basic, filling, tasty pastries/cakes/coffee at mid 90's Queens prices. Much like most of Asia they took tried and true designs of our stuff, reverse engineered it, and now sell it cheaper with comparable quality to the originals. Some of Fay-Da's pastries taste just as good as their counterparts in hipster infested/new age bakeries who jack the s*&t out of the prices every time a cow farts in a wheat field. I don't know how these guys turn a profit with most pastries being around $2 (sometimes less) but I imagine they rely heavily on sheer volume between the conga line of degenerate cabbies out front and nonstop foot traffic from the nearby subway station. The drill here is simple (mostly) self service. You walk in, grab tongs and a platter off the rack, then walk down the aisle opening treasure chests of cheap baked goodness and put them on your platter. Hand them to the cashier, maybe order some coffee or hot food to boot, pay, and either eat-in or carry out. Decor is pretty plain. Some group seating available on first come basis. All the buns, croissants, donuts, and custard goodies, are fresh because of the massive turnover. The quality of their "clone pastries" ranges from decent to good with most falling in between those 2. Nothing here really jumps out at you tastewise but then again none of it really sucks. If you're looking for something exciting and you got a sub $2 plain bun in your hand you're an idiot. The exception is Japanese cheesecake which takes the cake here with no pun intended. It's like a lighter, airy version of the traditional liquid cholesterol American cheesecake. The coffee is also cheap, fresh, and surprisingly strong. These guys definitely don't use organic, locally sourced, ethically grown, fair trade wheat/sugar/eggs/milk and I don't give a s^& nor does anyone else who lives in the real world. The bad: As is the case with most non-Americanized Asian spots in NYC, the service isn't exactly warm and fuzzy and the hygiene is questionable at best. As Americans we're used to bubbly, tarty little college girls with Tupperware smiles and seeing those useless "A" letter grade ratings stamped on the door at the local "Crumbs" type bakery. We're not used to grumpy, gruff old Asian women in paper hats who just want you and your dirty ass platters in and out of their "B at best" establishment. There are cultural differences; I don't take it personally and neither should you. Protip: Stay away from anything they sell with meats or cheeses because it just sits there all day in the display cases un-refrigerated attracting bugs. The ugly: Flies (especially in summer), dirty tongs, crumby tables, sticky floors, and platters smeared with mystery cream are the norm in here. Given the low prices there tends to be a glut of low class clientele such as subway bums eating buns and/or lowlife cab drivers taking a break from the usual scamming of tourists to go grab a cheap congratulatory coffee and blow up the toilet. In conclusion: The caveat here is simple and echos my sentiment regarding most non-Americanized Asian spots in Queens: If you want friendly service with a smile and/or immaculate cleanliness you're barking up the wrong tree here. However if you want a filling meal for around $5 and can overlook the stink flies and stink eyes then this is a gem. read more

I had a real bad experience this past weekend, that i really really wish it had never happened because i lived here and i would love to have asian bakery around. I ordered one of my favorite curry puff and a cup of small coffee. But then 20 minutes after, i had a severe headache and blurry sight.... i felt so terrible that i have never experience before in my life. Not long after that i start vommiting, and i thank God that the doctor cross the street was opened on sunday.... so i was be able to get treated right away. I called the manager and she did not sound concern at all. I just wish that no one got food poison, seems like they do not handle the meat properly. It's your standard Chinese bakery. No, it isn't as fancy as Paris Baguette around the corner, but for the staple buns and drinks, you can't beat the price or selection. Only knocking off 2 stars bc the last time I went about a week ago, let's just say there were a number of vagrants hanging out. One kept asking customers on line for money. Her constant dissatisfaction with the various non-Korean eateries makes you want to pull out your hair. What are you to do when you just want to have a simple breakfast yet there's this nagging parent who you must satisfy simultaneously. Aha! Fay Da bakery to the rescue! It's not Korean but they're close enough. The day before, mom was sitting in misery at a diner unhappy with her food and exaggeratingly feigning a headache from the meal. No surprise she miraculously got better by lunch time. But not at Fay Da. She stuffed her little mouth with the various pastries I bought. She drank her coffee and finished mine as well. And she also got me addicted to the place. I always get my iced milk tea along with either a curry beef pocket or a scallion pea bread which is so tasty. Plus, it's really cheap. I almost forgot to review this place. I manage to stop here at least 3x a month. This place is no different than other Asian bakery anywhere you go/find in Queens. But this is one is one stop away by train to my neighborhood. I buy raisin cheese, milk n' cream filling, sometimes, red bean and taro. They are not as deliceous but it's convenient. Their ensymada version is not as good as Filipino's where you can buy them in any Asian supermarket or Filipino bakery. Their ensymada has no cheese and no flavor varieties. It's full of sugar all over the big bread. And the white soft bread w/ meat inside the bun; otherwise called siapao is small and just okay. The bubble tea is not the best. I dislike it very much! I love the only item I buy here- Multigrain Flax Loaf at $2.50/ 7.5oz. --- It is extremely delicious and contains walnuts, flaxseed, raisins, and sesame. I always loved eating Chinese pastries, but they almost always contain huge amounts of lard. This bakery offers a healthier alternative for people who like the nice bakery environment without eating something they might regret later. The other items seem priced reasonably. I have tried the taro roll, but it was a too creamy for my taste. Lots of puffs, twists and buns, steamed and baked. Also pastry, pancakes, cakes and cookies. They have smoothie, slushes, hot and cold beverages. They have sandwiches, and many of the buns could also be eaten for lunch, though I see this more as a breakfast and cafe type place. It is self serve with a round tray and tongues. People fly in grab what they want. How do they know what they want? I think it would take me a while of trying everything to figure out what my reliable choices could be, and even then I would have to decide between at least two things. People were in a hurry, perhaps to try and grab a seat. At 10am on a Friday there were no seats to be had. One fellow was sleeping at his table despite the "no loitering" sign above his head. Poor fellow, I wondered if anyone woke him up and told him to move along. It makes me so sad to see homeless people buying something to eat and taking a nap. I think our society needs to do more for people, to provide real housing and safe shelters. A friend of mine was robbed at a shelter for their shoes. Horrible stuff. Housing is a big problem in NYC, wonder what happened to our will to house people affordably, to take care of people a little bit. So I have to give this place 2 stars because my "cheese" bun had ham in it--a waste of $1.25 because I didn't bother to go back and exchange it. GET ALLLLLLL THE PUFFSS!!!!! I've always been happily surprised with the location of this Fay Da. Grew up here in Forest Hills and it's nice to have some place so convenient. It's right outside of the main subway hub of the area, 71st Continental, and across the street of where I wait to take my bus home. Glad I can always come here on a whim to get my quick fix of Asian Bakery goodness. I mostly stop here for some Bubble tea after a large meal in the area. They're all on point -- Not too sugary, balls are nice and squishy. =] They have the usual assortment of foods available at an Asian bakery. Regardless if you're looking for something sweet, salty, full of carbs, or filled with meat, you can get it. Just the other morning, I was in the mood for some food-coma therapy: Came in, picked up a tray, crammed every single kind of puff they had on it, picked a bubble tea to wash it down with, and was on my way to contracting heavenly-itis. The tables can sometimes be a little dirty and if you're in a rush, you may get annoyed with how long it takes to get in and out. & Maybe this is an odd thing to notice: Probably because of the demographics of the neighborhood, many of the patrons are quite elderly. Not that I mind at all, and personally I think it's the chivalrous thing to do, but I'm pretty sure every single time I've gone into this Fay Da, I've stood at the entrance holding the doors open for a person.... whose youthful days are long behind them... Went here today, it's been on my list of things to do for a while now. Usually on my ride on the q60 down queens blvd I say to myself. Self! Get off the bus and go there. But, I'm too lazy and usually tired from work to muster up that energy. However, today was different.... Today, I went to the bakery! While I'm not extremely blown away... wasn't expecting be either. I am disappointmented with one of my recently new found favorite buns... their roast pork bun just didn't do it for me. I guess this little spot in woodside kinda out shines this place. I also brought a curry beef bun. Hot dog bun, and sweet topping bun. Let's not forget my strawberry bubble tea! (frozen) The curry beef bun was me walking on the edge. However it smelled so yummy and looked cool spinning in that little revolving microwave. And I enjoyed every bite of that sucka! Wish I brought two of them instead of buying that roast pork bun....lesson learned. The hot dog bun isn't anything special just a cute twist on a hot dog in a bun... lol the bread is just sweeter.I tried to swindle a 5 year old into trying it...but he told me that he wasn't into hot dogs anymore... so I ate it myself with ketchup and mustard. The sweet topping bun was good it def fed my sweet tooth craving for the day. It wasn't too sweet but just sweet enough that I didn't feel bad for downing the whole thing in less than 5 minutes. This place is really good at being pretty average compared to the other chains in Brooklyn and Manhattan Chinatown. When I walk into a Chinese Bakery, I'm always looking for savory and I opted for something with a Hot Dog since it was the day before Independence Day. The ordinary hot dogs were a bit shriveled up - nothing wrong with the taste of them but you never know just how dehydrated they are (just not visually appealing, that's all). I opted to pay a little more ($1.60) for a hot dog roll with scallion "rings". The hot dog itself was pretty juicy, the bread was flaky - semi croissant pastry like, however two things that put me off: the scallion rings were not evenly distributed (since there were two, you get a big bite of it 1/3 and 2/3 into your hot dog), plus there was ketchup in it. There shouldn't be ketchup in it - if I wanted ketchup, I would just order an American hot dog. I imagine the sweet stuff here probably tastes better. There was also a Middle Eastern looking guy at the counter pondering for a really long time over which cake to buy and I could tell the Chinese guy (upper/ low 30s) was trying really hard to be patient with what he wanted so kutos to him for not losing it. read more

Conveniently located right outside of the 71st & Continental subway station and up two blocks from the LIRR, Fay Day bakery is one of the few bakeries on Austin street but definitely one of the best. It is a Chinese bakery, that offers a variety of rolls, buns, pastries and cakes. With EXTREMELY low prices and consistently good treats, I believe Fay Da is definitely a better bakery compared to its up the block neighbor, Martha's. Where else can you get a $1.50 slice of cake and a $1 pork bun in Queens? ONLY AT FAY DA! My only issue is that they only take cash and while there is seating the bakery is very simplistic and I personally would like a more comfortable, coffee-esque shop to allow people to relax and enjoy themselves when sitting down to have a treat, coffee or tea. read more

Good pastries/breads with a cup of coffee or tea. Come on! If you commute to the city, don't break your bank out there. Treat yourself to something yummy and belly-filling. Tons of different stuff to choose from...steam buns, european styles cakes, egg tarts, and roasted buns. I don't believe they make it on premise, but instead get fresh deliveries around 7ish from the Flushing branch. This is not a gourmet cafe by any means.
