Notice how this guy, instead of accepting responsibility for his shoddy work and sketchy business practices and offering an apology, tries to shift the blame to the customer. This is not surprising considering the horrible service he provided. The exhaust problem was NOT a vague one. Exhaust poured into the cab of the car from the area of the catalytic convertor where you damaged it. It quickly got worse and became undrivable. I had very little money at the time and none to fix the extra damage you caused to the exhaust. I spent months sitting in the cold east wind catching buses to work before I could afford another car. I've attached a scan of the receipt for the "repairs" in case anyone doubts my authenticity. AGAIN, AVOID THIS MECHANIC AND CON-MAN AT ALL COSTS! I came in with a MUCH needed radiator replacement. Brian took a look at my car and informed me that there's a chance the head gasket was blown due to how long I was driving my vehicle without fixing the issue. You always hear horror stories about mechanics will do things to get you to pay more. Not these guys. After only a few short hours I got a call back saying my car does not need a new head gasket. There was other issues that I needed to replace so I got those some as well. (1)Valve cover gasket and end seal leaking oil. Need replacement. 2)Tires need rotation 3)Accessory drive belts cracking and need replacement 4)Cabin air filter is filthy and needs replacement. ) Not only was my car ready to go in such a short period but very affordable after doing some research of other places. Maybe we're biased as we live across the street, but this place is great. I've been there several times where things were making weird noises, and they just checked them out for us. Didn't charge us when nothing was found wrong. Always friendly, and honest. Feel we've lucked out as we can leave our car where we normally park it and just say, "Get to it when you can." Incredibly transparent, fast, and friendly. I have a minicooper that was leaking oil. Turns out the gasket and a piece that held a chain in place were worn down. Jim at FDA not only called me multiple times to explain their recommendations and prices BEFORE proceeding, he also saved the parts to show me. The repair itself was very fast. They were able to get the parts that same afternoon and my car was done in a few hours. Regarding pricing, he did not charge me further for labor regarding the chain piece. He said "it only takes a few seconds to snap this in place since we are already up there." I also had a tube that was loose that they fixed for free. Customer service was above and beyond. I forgot my card and Jim downloaded venmo (he also has paypal) so I didn't have to lyft home to get my card. Will 100% be returning here for all future car needs. read more

When you have a car that likes to have a lot of problems and has really expensive parts, it's even more important that you can find someone who you know is honest and cares about their customers. This is what you will find at Foreign and Domestic. Billy is a great guy and he will explain the issue to you and all of your options without treating you like an idiot who doesn't know anything about cars (which I've experienced before). They always try to find a good deal on parts (which I know because I've checked with my mechanic friend to see if he can find cheaper and he can't), and they are experienced with volkswagons which will help with the labor costs. Quality and affordable mechanic. I took them my 86' Toyota van and they were so nice and transparent. They told me exactly what they did and how they diagnosed the issues. The cost was very reasonable and I haven't had any issues since. The best part is turnaround. The other shops I've taken the car to have been quality but a little on the spendy side and I'd have to wait a couple weeks to get in...not here. In and out in a few days. I was on I-5 the other day and had a break down in my truck. I got on yelp to find a shop near by and FDA came up so I gave them a call to see if I could have it towed to them. One of the mechanics offered to come by since I was so close. When he got there he was able to remedy the issue. I was so happy a tow was not needed. When I asked Jim the mechanic that showed up how much it would be he said "just help out somebody the next time you can and come see us if you have other issues" They saved me money and more importantly time. This shop is fantastic! I have been going there for over 13 years. We have been through a lot together and these guys are true professionals. If they say you need to fix something you had better do it, they really know cars. I have had a couple of different makes in the ten years. I have had, Subaru, Mazda, Chevy and V.W. and they handled them all. In reading the comments below a $500 tune up is one that hasn't been done is a long time. Regular maintenance is what keeps your car rolling and cuts down on costs. Lesson learned. They don't sell you anything you don't need. You can't find a better shop than this. They are awesome with women and talk to me with the utmost respect, not like other shops I have been to in the past. The best! read more

I went here the other week with a major brake problem and I was so impressed with every aspect of my service. I am not knowledgable about cars, and this makes me a little bit uneasy when I need work done, however Jim at FDA was so communicative with me about everything he was doing, how much it cost and how important it was to fix, that I felt totally comfortable leaving my car there. I got my car back in exactly the time frame I needed, and it runs better than ever now. I got a lot of work done, and had several issues: since I was getting a lot of work, I figured I would ask them to rotate/balance tires. they told me they have a place they contract with and it costs $30. when I got the car back the invoice said $100. I should have brought it up but I was late for work. then, I didn't take it on the highway until weeks later, but they balanced it wrong. so I had to take MORE time off work to take my car to a tire shop that will do it right. I honestly feel like they performed some unnecessary work on my car. I don't know enough about cars to substantiate my claim, but it didn't feel right. I asked them to fix a squeak and it didn't get fixed. I brought it back and they still didn't fix it. to be fair, nobody can really fix it, so this item isn't that big of a deal. lastly, my car started making a new, weird noise the instant I drove it away. when I brought it back for the squeak, I mentioned it, and they said they couldn't hear it/said I probably needed more work. well, I just spent thousands of dollars on the car, and it's pretty fishy that it's making a new weird noise the INSTANT I get it back. I didn't bother following it up with them further bc it seemed like things haven't been going well with these people so I'm not going to keep dumping time and money into them. read more

I brought my car into FDA because I could tell the front rotors needed replacing. I also wanted my car thoroughly checked out because I'm moving soon and know that good (or at least fair) mechanics are a bit harder find there. Jim ended up finding a few maintenance things needing attention and we discussed which ones I could get away with not fixing right away. I ended up having them do almost all of the suggested repairs and all the work was done with quality parts. Though it's not the least expensive shop I've ever been to, it is very reasonable, and my car is driving as smooth as I can ever remember it. Based on the reviews here I went to this shop this week. They charged $500 for a "tuneup", a valve cover gasket replacement, and oil change on a 1992 Camry. That's not a ripoff, but seems to me to be on the high end of "reasonable", especially after giving me an estimate of a little over $300. Once you've described what you think the problem is, he will tell you the different options for what it could be, and why he thinks so. After looking at the vehicle, he explains in detail what he found as well as what options you have. He is especially good about watching the cost for you and if you have multiple items that need fixing, he will prioritize them and tell you what you let go a little longer. I was a customer for seven years. In that time I believed I received honest work at a fair cost, the operative word being "was." Recently, my engine had problems that led to it needing to be replaced. I believe Jim was responsible for this because he missed something in the 3 times in one month he looked for the cause of a warning light that kept coming on. He never found it and two days after the last time it happened the engine died. The bigger problem was his response to this. There was NO discussion or hint of agreeing he might have missed something. From the moment I said I wanted to discuss who would pay for the repairs he did nothing but deflect. When I mentioned a price his competitor quoted for the repairs his response was "wow that's a great price; I'd go there." I expect Corporate America to respond this way, having no interest in customer satisfaction. Not a small business owner whose customer I have been for a long time. Instead of trying to work something out so we each feel fairly treated he was perfectly happy to lose my business, and have me tell my circle and the yelp community how I was treated. This would be zero stars but yelp wouldn't save without at least one. read more

I came here on a neighbor's recommendation and was very disappointed, after multiple visits. At first they were friendly and seemed affordable. My car was not starting and they identified the problem as the ignition switch, which they replaced. After this fix my car still had trouble starting, and in fact seemed worse, and when I took it back they said it was coincidental that the starter had also gone bad and needed to be replaced. Okay, they replaced that too and said all was well. The next day my car showed the same problem and then would not start. They were befuddled and replaced the ignition switch again, but then said that they believed the issue was the igniton lock and that only the dealer could do that work. Frustrated, I still had a car that would not start and now no mechanic. In the end I found another mechanic who could fix my car (not a dealer) and did so promplty, in one visit. The ignition switch that FDA put in was defective and so I paid for a new part and labor at a new mechanic (since FDA said they couldn't fix my car and I was losing my trust in them). My new shop told me this was a cheap part from China, and for $16 more they put in the model brand (something I am willing to spend $16 more on when it's essential to my car starting). Jim at FDA told me he would only replace the cost of the defective part, though multiple mechanics told me they would have reimbursed the cost of the part AND labor. FDA's logic is that they could have re-done the repair. I didn't really want to have them change the ignition switch for a 3rd time after Jim told me the entire batch of ignition switches they got may have been defective, in which case why does a customer have to be the one to notice the part is defective? Jim was often very defensive any time I was skeptical of the repairs and would often blatantly interrupt me when I was talking. I had to take off early from work on multiple occassions. In the end, when he told me to come in for the reimbursement, I did but he was not there. I was told only he is authorized to do a refund, which seems like he should have told me over the phone to make sure he would be there not just "come by anytime". Today I again had to take off work early but called ahead of time and was told Jim would be there when I went in. He was not there. He also left a check for the WRONG amount and the gentleman at the shop suggested I just come back another time. I was hoping before even writing a check, we could talk about me getting a full refund...but he wasn't even there after the shop confirmed he would be. So I guess I'll create a yelp account and be satisfied with this incorrect refund. I don't think this shop understands how valuable a customer's time is when they are low-income and just want a reliable vehicle. read more
